They started offloading her boxes, and some of the things she was given by her parents. They took them in and arranged them accordingly. All this while umma was sitting in the room meant for her. “Salamu alaikum“ Hajara, the leader of the ladies said. “Amin wa alaikum wasalam“Umma replied. “Mu zamu tafi, allah bada zaman lafiya kuma allah albarkace auren“. Trans:“we are going, may the marriage be peaceful and blissful“Hajara said with a teary eyes. “Amin nagode“ Umma replied sniffing. “ Sai wata rana“ Hajara bade her goodbye and left with her troop, while she continue crying. ********************* PRESENT “Hmmm“ she sighed, turned and faced Rabe who was still on his knees. She wiped her tears. “Alhaji ka tashi ka zauna“ Translation:“Alhaji stand up and sit down“ she said. “Mhmm-mhmm; ba zan iya zama ba sai kince kin yafe mun“ Trans:“Mhmm-mhmm; i can‘t sit down until you have forgiven me“ He said. “Hmmm,“ she sighed. After all the crowd have dispersed, leaving behind; Umma, her mother and her aunt. “Uhm-uhm“Binta cleared her throat, “Finally you are now a married woman, a wife to Rabe. In the next few hours you will be taken to your new home, i‘ll like to let you know you are no longer a child obey you husband and it shall be well with you. On no account should he report you to us, our responsibilties lies on your shoulders. Your husband is rich and he is generous so don‘t let the opportunity that God gave you to wipe away poverty in this family let you by“. She adviced “I don‘t have much to say, i pray that your married life shall be blissful and please don‘t forget what i told you earlier on, here is a special prayer book i bought for you“ Larai said and hand over the book to her. The ladies came in to take her to her father‘s place for his own piece of advice. “You people should leave me, i‘m not going anywhere“ She said crying seriously and holdind her aunt tightly. “Mama tell them to go and leave us alone, i‘m not going anywhere“. They kept strugling. Larai couldn‘t doing anything because she too was crying. After much struggling her mother stood up and yanked her away and handed her over to them. They took her to her father, and after he adviced her and gave her his blessings. The ladies came in and took her to the bus that will conveyed them to Niger state her new home. ********************************** On getting to Niger state, after an hour drive they stopped right in front of a big house with a green gate. “Incase you need anything before i come visiting you are free to meet my brother Usman, when i come i‘ll settle him. You know i can‘t be coming to see you everyday because of the distance i stayed in Niger state which is faraway to here(Mubi in Adamawa) so i decided to make it once a week, i hope is okay by you?“ He asked her. “mhmm“ She replied. “Do you have anything to tell me?“ He asked with a concerned look “No“ She answered “Okay then, i‘ll be going back till next week“ He said adjusting his babar riga. And don‘t forget to extend my greetings to your parent. “Okay i‘ll do that bye“ She said standing up to enter inside as they were outside their house all this while. “Take this with you“ He said handing a black cellophane bag to her. “No, thank you“She said and hurriedly entered inside the house. He shook his head and shrugged his enormous shoulders, just then he saw a boy passing by and then he called his attention. “Young man, please take this inside this house for, tell hajiya that alhaji Rabe sent it to Umma“ He handed the bag to the boy and waited. “Tau“ The boy replied and collected the bag from his hand. He was still standing at the same spot waiting for the arrival of the boy. “Tace wai angode“ Trans: “She said i should thank you“ The boy reported. “That‘s very good, thank you my boy“ Rabe replied but much to his surprise the boy refused to go, instead he kept scratching his head and shifting nervously from one leg to the other. “Young man, what is the matter?“ Rabe asked. “ You didn‘t settle me“ The boy replied with a frown. “Kai! You this children of nowadays, you are so spoiled mtcheeeeew take and go away“ He handed a hundred naira note to him. The boy snatched it and ran as fast as his feet could take him. ********************************** “Ayyiriri!!! You are now Rabe‘s wife“, the women chanted. “Umma, amaryar Rabe Allah baku zaman lafiya Ayyiriri!“ . Trans:“Umma, Rabe‘s wife happy married life, Ayyiriri!“ Her friends chanted also. |

“Is true, if actually you take me as your own daughter you wouldn‘t be saying such thing“She said “There you go again, well you a small child......“ “No, no, no i have told to stop calling me a small child i don‘t like it“She pouted her lips. “Hahaha, but ofcourse you are a small child“Larai said with a mischeiveous smile. “No mama i‘m not, i‘ll be fifteen next month“She replied “Fifteen only, i thought you will be thirty come next month“Larai said, enjoying the argument. “I guess i‘ll be going“She said, trying to stand up but Larai held her back. “Haba, yar mama(mama‘s child) i was just joking. I‘m sorry if i got you angry“Larai begged. “I know you are not sorry, you will repeat it again“She said, evidently aware of her pretence. “No i‘ll not, from now henceforth you are a big girl, are okay by that?“ Larai said “Yes!“She replied with a happy tone. “I have to go now“ She stood up and picked her hijjab and wore it. “Hmmm, okay then my regards to everyone and please don‘t forget what i told you, be a good girl okay?“ Larai adviced. “I will try my best, i promise to make you proud insha Allah(by God‘s grace). “Thank you my dear may Allah bless you“ “Amin mama, sa an jima“ she bade her goodbye and went back home. ********************************** “ Hmmm, Umma kenan, you are not looking bad“ Rabe said “Nagode“ She replied shyly. She stole a glance at him, he is a huge black and short man with beefy arms and a short neck like that of a pig. His bears could be refer to as a forest. When he smile his brown set of teeth would come in view, a thirty years old man. With pot belly. “I hope, you are getting ready for our marriage?“ He asked, She nodded, “incase if you need anything don‘t hesitate to tell me“ “Mhmm“ She answered. “Kin san ni dan kasuwa ne, ina da shagon kayan sawa na mata irin su leshi, atamfa, shadda da dai sauran su“ He smiled, obviously pleased with himself. Trans:“You know, i‘m a tradesman i have a shop in which i sold ladies wears such as: lace, ankara, shadda and many more“. “I‘ve heard“ |

It could have been easy to convinced him,but i‘m afraid we‘ll just let it happen if that is the will of God“Larai adviced “But mama i don‘t love him, what do i tell Sani“ She said as tears began to fall from her eyes. “Sani is a good boy he will understand,i‘ll explain issues to him tomorrow“ Larai said “Umma i will like you to do a favour to me“Larai said “What is it mama?“she asked with her eyes on the floor “It is now that you will make me proud, it is now that i will know i didn‘t sent you to Islamiyya(islamic school)in vain. Here is the right time to show the world you are of different product, a virtous woman is what i want you to be. From now henceforth let Rabe be the Sani you loved. On no account shall you show your dislike to him, be an obedient and respectful wife. Tighten your belt marriage is not a bed of roses it has its ups and downs you shouldn‘t be taken unaware“. After saying all this the room became silent each to her own thought. “Mama i‘m deeply indebted to all you have done for me. May God reward you with long life and aljannatul firdausi“ she said with a relieved face. “Amin summah amin“ Larai replied, obviously happy with her niece change of mood. “I wished to come back and stay with and live with you again“ she said with pouted lips. “Kai! Have you forgotten what we passes through last year in order to convinced your father to allow you stay here so that i enrolled you to Islamiyya?“ “Hmm, i‘ve never seen a man like your father very strict“Larai said shaking her head. “Well i don‘t blame him such blessings don‘t happen everyday,i can do anything humanly to have a daughter like you“ one could visibly read the sad tone in her voice. “There you go again, you always told me to be contented with what i have i expect you to do the same, c‘mon mama please cheer up ofcourse i‘m your daughter also except if you don‘t take me as one“She said and fold her arms on her chest at the same time enlarging her nose and shaking her legs. “Haba! How can you say such thing?“ |

‘Salama alaikum“ Umma said. “Amin wa alaikum wasalam“Larai (sister to Umma‘s mother, whom Umma referred to as mama) replied. “Ahn-ahn, Umma is that you? Is quite a while since you last visited. To what do i owe this sudden visit“ She said, with smile on her face. “Mama good afternoon“ she greeted trying hard to hid her sad countenance. “How is your mother? I hope you are all fine?“Larai asked trying to read the girl‘s face in order to be sure all is well “They are all fine, they extend their regards“ she replied casting her eyes on the floor. Larai got up from and re-tied the wrapper, then she sat down on the mat. Just like Umma‘s room hers too was sparsely furnished, the room was painted in brown and the floor was covered with mat. With an iron bed facing the door. Close to the window is a tray that contained the petty things she sold at home, white maggi, omo, salt, daddawa(locust beans),kanwa(potash) and some valueable things been used at home. The house is a self contained with two rooms inside. Outside the house is a room meant for her two children who happen to be males. “Ya ta zo ki zauna kusa dani“ Trans:“My daughter come and sit beside me“ she said patting the mat. “Tau mama“ she went and sat down. “Umma, when did i become a stranger, that you cannot confide in?“ Larai said “Hmmm, mama you can never be a stranger to me. It‘s just that my mind is troubled and i‘m confused“ she said, wiping her sweaty palms on her wrapper. “What is troubling you my dear child, have they told you?“ Larai asked fully awared of the child‘s predicament. “Told me what, or are you awared of what is happening? She asked with confusion written all over her face. “Well, your mother informed me of their new in-law. Your husband to be Rabe, last week in which she told me you weren‘t awared yet“Larai blurted casting a pitiful look on the child. “Hmmm, yes they told me this morning and that is why i‘m here“she said with a shaky voice. “Umma, your father is a strong headed man,had even your mother is against the union 1 Like |
