Nigerian women are being trafficked to Italy under the pretence that they will be working as nannies or in factories – but often end up working the streets as prostitutes.
Their plight has been highlighted by Paris-based photographer Elena Perlino, originally from Italy, who began to notice the presence of young African women working on the streets during her commutes from Turin.
She said: ‘I decided to start from this surreal vision to tell a story. I have been working on the topic for several years, focusing mainly on the Italian connection.’

Perlino reveals that many Nigerian women come to Italy hoping to make enough money from honest work as nannies or factory workers to support their families back home, but are tricked by traffickers into working in the sex trade.

Eighty per cent of women trafficked to Italy come from Benin City, Edo State, in south Nigeria.
The photographer explained: ‘My work attempts to show a complex phenomenon that crosses Italy from North to South.
‘This involves many cities including Turin, Milan, Genoa, Rome, Naples and Palermo and thousands of Nigerian and Italian people.’
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime declared Nigeria among the top eight countries with the highest human trafficking rates in the world.

Traffickers demand on average more than 50,000 euros (US $60,000) for travel expenses and accommodation, with the women having to work as prostitutes until their debts are paid off.

Mass defection of members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) especially aspirants that lost tickets in the just concluded primaries of the party, is looming in Benue State, LEADERSHIP has learnt.

This is even as there was serious fracas in the Benue State House of Assembly and the House session halted when a lawmaker announced his defection from the ruling PDP to the opposition APC. Many other lawmakers who had contested the PDP primaries and lost are all set to decamp to various opposition parties.

The deputy governor of the state, Chief Steven Lawani who lost the PDP governorship ticket in the primaries is also set to defect to the opposition party. Lawani is aggrieved because, according to sources, he was denied ticket to fulfill the aspirations of the Idomas to rule the state.

However, the defecting lawmaker, Mr. Baba Odeh is representing Otukpo/Akpa state constituency and had decamped to the APC because he could not win the ticket of the PDP in the just concluded primaries. Odeh is the chairman House Committee on Finance and also leader of G23, a group of all PDP lawmakers in the state.

Fracas ensued in the State House of Assembly during plenary, when the speaker, Terhile Ayua (PDP) refused to announce the defection of Odeh despite having formally written to the House over his intention to defect to another political party. ABUJA — Senate President David Mark, yesterday, described as dubious and embarrassing, allegation by the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, attached to the National Assembly that his (David Mark) security details were the ones who threw teargas canister at the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Aminu Tambuwal when the police invaded the National Assembly last month.

The DPO had allegedly told the Senator Ahmed Makarfi Ad-Hoc committee investigating the invasion of the National Assembly on November 20, that it was not Police officers from the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, that tear-gassed the Speaker and some other members of the House of Representatives, but rather the Senate President’s security details.
Mark in a statement signed by his Special Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Kola Ologbondiyan, said: “The attention of the Office of the President of the Senate has been drawn to news reports alleging that security details attached to the President of the Senate, Senator David Mark, were responsible for the use of teargas on the person of the Speaker, House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Waziri Tanbuwal, at the National Assembly premises on November 20, 2014 and credited to SP Idachaba James, the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, of National Assembly.
“We wish to state without equivocation that the security details attached to the President of the Senate, Senator David Mark, did not and could not have attacked the person of Speaker Tambuwal with tear gas.
“We find the reports credited to SP. Idachaba that security details of Senator Mark attacked Speaker Tambuwal with tear gas as absolute falsehood, dubious, vexatious, horrible and embarrassing.
“The events of November 20, 2015 are very fresh and any attempt to re-write or misrepresent them will not stand. SP. Idachaba James, who claimed not to have been present at the scene of the incident but only relied on hearsay, must not be allowed to embark on a name calling exercise.
“It is also imperative to state that any attempt to create a needless feud between the two chambers of the National Assembly is mischievous and wicked
“For the avoidance of doubts, we hereby declare that the security aides of the President of the Senate did not attack Speaker Tambuwal with teargas.”
The DPO had in his testimony indicted security details attached to the Senate President of being behind the canister of tear gas at the Speaker and his colleagues on that day.
But his testimony was debunked by other heads of security and paramilitary agencies attached to the National Assembly, who vehemently disagreed with him, saying that they were not aware of any Mark’s security detail throwing tear gas at Tambuwal.

ABUJA — The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, yesterday, aborted moves by the House of Representatives to investigate the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, over the allegation that she spent N10 billion on chartered jet.
Delivering judgment on a joint suit filed before the court by the Petroleum Minister and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Justice Ahmed Mohammed voided two separate summons issued to the plaintiffs by the Public Accounts Committee of the House of Reps, which requested them to appear to offer explanations regarding allegations of financial recklessness against them.

Justice Mohammed nullified the summons on the premise that no evidence was adduced before the court to show that the proposed investigation was contained in a resolution of the House, which he said ought to have been published in the journal of the National Assembly or the official gazette of the Federal Government of Nigeria.
He noted that the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Bello Adoke, had confirmed that no such resolution was published in the official gazette, “implication of failure to provide the published resolution is that there is no evidence before the court to show that the investigation followed the provisions of the constitution”.
He held that the House of Reps failed to fulfil the condition precedents for the commencement of such probe as stipulated in sections 88 and 89 of the 1999 constitution, as amended.
“I am, therefore, bound to set aside the letters of invitation issued to the plaintiffs, which were marked as exhibits KA-1 and KA-2”, the Judge added.
The judge, however, stressed that had the House produced or annexed a copy of its journal containing its resolution to probe the plaintiffs, “I would not have hesitated to dismiss this suit and order them to submit themselves to the investigative panel.”
Besides, Justice Mohammed maintained that the House of Reps has the constitutional powers to summon any person in Nigeria, regardless of position or status, to appear before it, saying the House equally has the powers to compel the attendance of such person so far as it exercises such powers with due deterrence to the due process of the law.
“This should not send a wrong signal to the public that the House of Reps does not have powers to summon any public officer for the sake of accountability and transparency in the process of governance.”.
