Agriculture / Re: How To Succesfuly Grow Onions In Southern Nigeria by prof2007: 9:48pm On Feb 27, 2021
ONION VARIETIES GROWN IN NIGERIA

1. RED CREOLE: This is a brilliant red short day variety with medium-sized flattened bulbs. It is a popular standard variety in high demand because of its good keeping quality. It produces mainly single onions from transplants and has a pungent taste.

Agriculture / How To Succesfuly Grow Onions In Southern Nigeria by prof2007: 9:35pm On Feb 27, 2021
We all know onions and how they are in high demand in the market, but everybody thinks they only grow in the northern part of Nigeria. I want to tell you that onions actually grow in the south. TESTED and PROVEN.

SO HOW WILL YOU PLANT YOUR ONIONS?

1. SITE PREPARATION
You need to make a bed just like every other vegetable. If you are planting in the dry season let the bed be very low so you don't need to water too much and your onions will be able to get the little water it needs to grow. Apply poultry droppings 2 weeks before planting.

2. NURSERY
Onion is not directly planted into the field. So you need to nurse it and transplant to the well prepared bed in 15 days. What you need for the nursery:
A. Hybrid onion seeds
B. Wood shavings also known as 'sawdust'
C. Dried poultry droppings
D. Flat tray or trough

NURSERY PROCEDURES
1st Step: Mix the wood shavings and poultry droppings together and water to make moist, then place the mixed content on the tray or trough.
2nd: Make horizontal lines on the tray 2cm apart then sprinkle hybrid onion seed exactly on the lines and cover with little dry soil.
3rd: Wet every evening but don't allow water to touch the lines on which you planted the seeds.
If you follow the procedures above, you onion seedlings will be ready for transplanting in 10 days.

Onions are in high demand in Nigeria and the price soars during dry seasons. You can make a lot of money growing onions commercially. Choice of variety matters in commercial farming. This is because a farmer has to calculate the input costs and output costs in order to maximize profits.

Optimum temperature for onion development is between 15 to 30°C, whereas 20 to 25°C is favourable for seedling growth. Generally, high temperatures favor bulbing and curing. However, in cases of extremely high temperatures, maturity is hastened and bulbs do not grow to maximum size hence lowering yields. Fertile, well drained soils are good for plant growth. Optimum pH is between 6 to 7.5. For irrigation, drip or overhead irrigation can be used.

Onions at bulbing stage need substantial amount of water. Excessive moisture, however, must be avoided during growing season. Avoid too much application of fresh manure, as this will cause the plants to develop thick necks and too much of leaves at the expense of bulb formation. Fresh manure could also host insect pests.

CROP HUSBANDRY
Weeding: Can be done by hand or chemical applications/herbicides. Mulching can also be done to suppress weeds.
Raised beds: Improves drainage and prevents damping-off disease.
Mulching: Maintains and enriches soil organic content, prevents soil borne diseases and suppresses weeds.
Crop rotation: Important, to avoid build-up of pests and diseases e.g. nematodes, Fusarium and Sclerotium

INSECT PESTS
Important insect pests that attack onions include Thrips, Whiteflies and Aphids and would require insecticide applications. Thrips are more severe in dry seasons hence keep the plants well irrigated during such seasons.
One can reduce pests’ populations by pulling out weeds since they act as alternate hosts for pests. Chemical applications can also be made i.e. insecticide.

Plants extracts have also been used and proven to be effective e.g. Neem and Garlic extracts. These are sprayed on attacked plant parts. The plants extracts should be tested for phytotoxicity before any applications are made.

CHEMICAL APPLICATIONS
Fungicides: Can be classified as curative or protective fungicides. Protective fungicides are chemicals which have the Active Ingredient Mancozeb e.g. Milthane, Oshothane, Dithane, e.t.c. This is applied when weather conditions are likely to favour development of the disease i.e. blights. Curative fungicides are applied to plants already infected by fungal diseases e.g. Pink Rot, Purple blotch and blights (early & late blight). In this case, applications are made on the infected regions i.e. bulbs or stems.

HARVESTING & CURING
Harvesting can be done as from 90 to 150 days after sowing. Onions are ready for harvest when the leaves collapse. The necks can be twisted and its leaves bent over and left to dry for 10 to 12 days or less depending on weather conditions.

The crop is pulled out by hand and kept for some days in the field with bulbs covered with leaves. This is called windowing/curing. Leaves are then cut off and the mature bulbs stored.

So here we are. If you are passionate about venturing into agribusiness then onion might be the wonder crop to start with.

Crime / Man Sentenced To Death & 10-year Imprisonment In Ekiti by prof2007: 5:31pm On Feb 26, 2021
Ekiti State High Court has sentenced a 45-year-old man, Mohammed Isiaka, to death by hanging for killing one Yakubu Jimoh. The court, however, discharged and acquitted two others – Ismaila Okoro, 20, and Awolusi Bidemi, 23.

Delivering the judgment, Justice Lekan Ogunmoye, said, “The first accused is sentenced to death by hanging for murder on count one; and on count two, he is sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment with N20,000 option of fine for unlawful possession of firearms.” The judge also sentenced him to six months’ imprisonment for unlawful possession of the Nigerian Army uniform with an option of fine of N2,000.

He, however, acquitted the 2nd and 3rd defendants, saying, “In the case, there was no iota of evidence before me from which it could be inferred the accused persons conspired to commit the offence of murder. The only option open to me in the circumstance is to hold that the prosecution had not proved the offence of conspiracy beyond reasonable doubt against the accused persons. In the circumstance, the 2nd and 3rd defendants are hereby discharged and acquitted.”

According to the charge, the first accused committed the offence on or about March 27, 2017, at Igirigiri village in Ado Ekiti, when he murdered one Yakubu Jimoh contrary to Section 316 and punishable under sections 319 and 428 (d) of the Criminal Code Law, Cap. C16 of Ekiti State of Nigeria, 2012.‌

The prosecutor, Mr Gbemiga Adaramola, called 6 witnesses, while exhibits tendered included a gun, an army belt, a portrait picture, a mask, a human skull and bones, charms, among others. Crime / Kidnappers Demand N100m To Free UI Student by prof2007: 5:21am On Feb 26, 2021
Gunmen, who abducted Emmanuel Odetunde, a student of Sociology at the University of Ibadan, Oyo State, have demanded N100m ransom from his family to free him. He was abducted by the gunmen, who broke into his father’s farm in Oke Odan, Apete area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital on Monday.

Odetunde was said to have been kidnapped by the bandits around 5pm. It was learnt by close family sources that 4 suspected herders had demanded for his father. They however kidnapped the young man when told by the workers that his father was not around. Samuel, the victim’s brother said the kidnappers had reached out to the family, demanding a N100m ransom. Although Samuel said the safety of his brother was paramount, he added that the family could not raise the huge amount.

State Police PRO, Olugbenga Fadeyi, said in a statement that the police “are working alongside other security operatives to ensure the victim returns safely from the den of his abductors. We will also ensure the kidnappers are captured, having deployed a police tactical team, including an anti-kidnapping squad that will help in the rescue mission,” he added.

Agriculture / Re: Update: Nigeria Is Currently The Largest Producer Of Cassava In The World by prof2007: 10:13pm On Feb 24, 2021
On a per capita basis, North Central Nigeria is the highest producing region at 720kg per person, followed by South East 560 kg, South South 470kg, South West 340kg, North West 100kg and North East 10kg. National per capita production of cassava is 320 kg per person.

Benue and Kogi states in the North Central Zone are the largest producers of cassava (IITA, 2004). Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Delta states dominate cassava production in the South South. Ogun, Ondo and Oyo dominate in the South West and Enugu and Imo dominate production in the South East. Kaduna alone in the North West is comparable in output to many of the states in the southern regions at almost 2 million tonnes a year with very little currently produced, in the North East.

Agriculture / Update: Nigeria Is Currently The Largest Producer Of Cassava In The World by prof2007: 10:06pm On Feb 24, 2021
CURRENT STATUS
Nigerian cassava production is by far the largest in the world; a third more than production in Brazil and almost double that of Indonesia and Thailand. Cassava production in other African countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Madagascar, Mozambique, Tanzania and Uganda appears small in comparison to Nigeria’s substantial output.

Autos / Young Nigerian Graduate Builds Own Car by prof2007: 2:30pm On Feb 24, 2021
He bears same first name with the renowned scientist, Faraday. Although he is not yet a national hero, many who know him believe his recent creation will birth him national honours and international celebration. His name is Ibitoye Olajide Michael. Right from his childhood, Michael was skillful with mechanical gadgets and toys. As he advanced in age, his skills made him dream big.

In 2017, he started constructing a car. He had vowed during his childhood that he would create his own personal car by himself and for himself. This stance was not shocking to his aunty Abimbola Oluwayomi Christianah. “He started on this thing even from childhood. Anytime we bought a toy gun or anything for him, he would break it, out of curiosity, and try to put the broken parts together again. That was when I noticed that this boy is going to be somebody in life,” Michael’s aunty recalls.

Michael hails from Ekiti and studied Botany at Olabisi Onabanjo University. Although he wanted to study mech engineering, he was twice denied admission. So, he settled for botany, but never allowed that failure to deter him from working on his dreams. He started working on his dream car during his undergraduate days. He saved part of the little money he got from home.

‘’In 2017, I started saving money. I got some iron rods, which I started welding together; but I was not good at it. So, I had to learn the act and arts, during which course I went partially blind for four days, as a result of the welding sparks that hurt my naked eyes. On the fifth day, after my recovery, I discovered that there was nothing I couldn’t weld,’’ Michael opens up on the genesis of his innovation.

The prodigy never rested, but spurred himself to work by saving most of the allowance he got from his NYSC (a compulsory one-year programme for all Nigerian graduates below age 31). Upon completion of his service in 2018, Michael kept saving and working on his project, which he put on the road on 19 October 2020. ‘’My car can go anywhere; though I don’t take it for long travels because I’m yet to make its windshield’’, Michael boasts.

The rationale behind his decision can be understood. He once was blind, but now he sees; to go blind again—as a result of refusal to protect one’s eyes—may not make him sing another tune of Amazing Grace!

Michael’s car has been sighted on different highways in Ibadan, where many residents cheer him on, while driving. The car is a rear-wheel drive, similar to a BMW, though the engine of Michael’s car is located at the back, unlike BMW’s. The car runs on a 1.6 Volkswagen engine.

Michael’s dream is to bring together and train other skillful young Nigerians who share the same dreams with him. He calls on Nigerians to support him so he can complete the construction of his car. He also seeks scholarship to study mechanical engineering, his dream course, which he believes will better enhance his skills.

Politics / Labour Silent As Buhari & Govs Discuss Fuel Price On Thursday by prof2007: 4:09pm On Feb 23, 2021
President Muhammadu Buhari and state governors will discuss fuel pricing Thursday. Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, disclosed this Sunday night after a bipartite meeting of the FG and organised labour at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Briefing journalists on their resolutions, Ngige said labour had investigated the report of the Technical Committee on PMS Pricing Framework as agreed at the last meeting and made their submissions alongside the NNPC. “The labour side saw that they (NNPC) were making some points and like I said, it is work in progress. Governors are going to discuss this on Thursday. They have discussed this at the National Economic Council and so, everybody is involved because we find ourselves in dire straits. There is no money for subsidy.

“The NNPC has explained: What they are doing is import- dependent. Deregulation is import-dependent but they are doing bulk purchasing. So, they can get discounts. They are also using foreign exchange that is discounted for them. They are not buying from the parallel market. So, all these things will be put in the basket and a price will emerge from it.”

Ngige maintained tthat the FG had concluded discussions with organised labour on fuel pricing. On electricity tariff, the minister disclosed that the meeting adopted the report of its Ad-hoc Technical Committee on Electricity Tariffs, made some adjustments and transformed the committee into an implementation committee, to implement all recommendations made, including mass metering.

He stated, “You will start seeing members of the committee with the Minister of Power going around now and making sure Discos put meters for people because there are reports they don’t want to be distributing meters and want to be doing bulk billing and estimated billing. So, we don’t want that.

“There is also a resolution as regards gas companies reducing gas pricing for gas sold to power companies, GENCOS and the rest of them so the price of electricity per unit will go down and consumers will benefit from it. We have given the marching orders for them to do so. Some paper work has to be done and once that is done, price of electricity will go down and once it goes down, the consumers will benefit.” ‌

He said the committee also recommended that those forcefully migrated by distribution companies from lower paying bands C and D to upper bands A and B should petition the National Electricity Regulatory Commission. Ngige, however, announced that the social dialogue between the Federal Government and organised labour has been adjourned till April as the two standing committees were still working.

Secretary to the FG, Boss Mustafa, congratulated organised labour for their sacrifices at this time of economic difficulty, which has been rewarded with Nigeria’s exit from recession in the 3rd quarter of 2020. President of NLC, Ayuba Wabba and his TUC counterpart, Quadri Olaleye, led organised labour.

The organised labour failed to respond on the planned meeting by the President and the governors. Wabba and Olaleye did not respond to calls and text messages sent to them on Monday.

Crime / Ondo Community Laments Herdsmen Invasion & Police Harassment Over Cows’ Death by prof2007: 11:35am On Feb 19, 2021
People of Ifon in Ose LGA of Ondo State have decried the high rate of criminality by those masquerading as herdsmen in the community. Activities of bandits in the area resulted in killing of the monarch of the community, Oba Israel Adeusi, last year.

Speaking with journalists Thursday, the President, Ifon Development Union, Chief Olufemi Awani, appealed to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd); the Inspector-General of Police and the state Commissioner of Police to intervene in the matter, adding that the town was under siege from herdsmen, who seemed to be taking advantage of the monarch death.

Awani said, “The menace of herders and bandits masquerading as herdsmen has been on the increase and our community, being largely agrarian, has been at the receiving end. The herders, as if the death of our monarch was an invitation to them, have invaded our farmlands and are having a field day. Few weeks back, farmers at Odogboro and Ugboke in Ifon were sent out of their farms when armed herders invaded with their cows. All these have been going on unhindered and without question or check, at least, none of these dangerous herders has been brought to justice”

Awani also accused the police of harassing leaders of the community over the death of cows owned by one of the herders in the area. He explained, “One Abdullahi went to Ifon Police Station to report that our people killed his cows on January 6, 2021. This necessitated the DPO inviting some of our community leaders for questioning. Those invited denied killing the cows and confirmed to the DPO that the area of the reported incident was not on Ifon land. The matter was laid to rest.

“Unknown to our people, the matter did not end there. It was a matter of great surprise that barely one month after on February 4, 2021, the same leaders were again invited to the Ifon Police Station by the DPO. On getting there, two men in mufti were introduced to them as police officers from the office of the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, FIB Tactical Command Squad, Force Headquarters, SARS Building, Abuja.

"The policemen from Abuja told our community leaders that one Alhaji Usman, who is unknown to our people, petitioned the police authority in Abuja, which necessitated their coming for a peaceful resolution and invited them to Abuja. The policemen from Abuja then brought out pro forma of an already prepared and signed letter-invitation, which was there and then addressed to each of the invited leaders.”

When contacted, the Police PRO in the state, Mr Tee-Leo Okoro, claimed not to be aware of the matter. “I am not aware of the matter; I have to call the DPO of Ifon to confirm,” Ikoro stated.

Politics / Kidnappers In Ondo Forests Speak Fulfulde, Says Gov Akeredolu by prof2007: 8:51am On Feb 16, 2021
Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu on Monday said kidnappers in Ondo forest reserves speak Fulfulde. He spoke while featuring on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’ programme monitored by The PUNCH. According to UNESCO Thesaurus, Fulfulde is the language of the Fulbe people also known as Peul or Fulani, who are found throughout West Africa.

There has been unrest in the South-West over activities of Fulani herders who have been accused of committing sundry crimes including killing, kidnapping, rape and farm destruction. In a bid to sanitise the forests, Akeredolu had ordered herdsmen to vacate the Ondo State forest reserves or be registered with the ministry of agriculture in the state. The development sparked controversy with the Presidency saying the governor lacked the right to order herders to vacate forest reserves.

But Akeredolu has since insisted the herders must obey constituted authorities in the state or leave his domain.
Speaking on Monday, he said, “What we had to address in Ondo State is essentially our discovery that some criminal elements were using our forest reserves to perpetrate crimes and we said, look, we are not going to stay by and just watch this happen. People are kidnapped, most of them have come back and we debriefed them; we have been briefed by all of them and we know essentially the group of people involved and that they were taken into our forest reserves.

“Our farmers who operate there are licensed to be there, so anybody who wants to go there must be licensed to be there. If you are not licensed to be there to do a legitimate economic venture, then you are a criminal element, we are going to ask you to leave the place. It is the order of the day that every person that is kidnapped is taken to this forest. Then, we must clear that forest of all criminals, we must clear all the criminals no matter who they are.”

There have also been comments by some northern governors that criminal herders in the South-West and other parts of the country are Fulani from neighbouring West African countries and not Fulani herders of Nigerian origin but Akeredolu said it was the responsibility of the security agencies to fish them out.

Continuing, the governor said, “How am I to know where they have come from? How did you allow them in, in the first instance. My duty is not to profile those who come into the country but all I know very clearly is that those who are perpetrating this crime speak the same language, they have a common language like some people here in this country. That is where our problem lies. Whether they are foreigners or from here, it is a matter for the police, it is a matter for our security (agencies) to go into fully and be able to identify them. But what we have when we debrief those who have been kidnapped is that the language they hear is what matters to them.”

When asked specifically to name the language of the kidnappers, Akeredolu said, “Most of them were speaking Fulfulde and there is no need for us to run away from it. This is a common language that is spoken across the length and breadth particularly in West Africa and North Africa. So, if they come in, how did they come in? Miyetti Allah does not have to defend these people if they are not their members. There is no need to defend them; let us treat them as what they are –criminals and they (Miyetti Allah) themselves should support us in getting them out,” the governor added.

Akeredolu, who is the Chairman of the Southwest Governors’ Forum, further said the governors in the zone are expected to meet with the National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno, and the newly appointed service chiefs on Wednesday over the security challenges of the region.

Politics / Herdsmen: We’ll Protect Ourselves If Buhari & Abiodun Fail - Ogun Monarch by prof2007: 10:32pm On Feb 14, 2021
Olu of Ilaro and Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, and the PDP in Ogun State have warned the federal and state governments against possible consequences of the killing of people in Yewaland by Fulani herdsmen.

Herdsmen had, Friday night, invaded Igbooro, Oja-Odan in Yewa North Local Government Area of the state, leaving 3 dead and 2 villagers injured. The marauding herdsmen reportedly invaded the village close to Eggua in Oja-Odan around 11pm, shooting sporadically and setting ablaze 3 houses and storehouses in the village. In the latest killing, a mother and her child were among the 3 hacked to death in their huts, while 2 are said to be in critical condition after they were shot by the herdsmen. It was also learnt many people, including children, sustained injuries. The attack came barely 24 hours after 5 persons were killed in Owode Ketu.

In response, the monarch condemned the killings in a statement on Saturday titled, ‘Stopping the time bomb before it is too late,’ addressed to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), and Governor Dapo Abiodun. The monarch warned that people might resort to self-defence if the governments failed to be proactive. Oba Olugbenle, who described activities of the herdsmen as criminal and dangerous, said they had wreaked havoc on many Yewaland communities, including Egua, Oja-Odan, Igan-Alade, Gbokoto, Ijoun, Owode-ketu, Ebute, Igbooro, and Imeko-Afon with reports of plans to attack major towns in the kingdom.

The statement read in part, “The attention of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari, and all the security agencies is drawn to the continued siege of the entire Yewaland of Ogun State in the last few weeks by armed herdsmen and bandits callously killing, including literally slaughtering and maiming our people. The FG and Ogun State government are hereby implored, as a matter of extreme urgency, to act fast to secure lives and property of our people before it spirals out of complete control.

“In this situation, it is not out of place that people may resort to self-help to defend themselves if the government fails to guarantee their safety as citizens of Nigeria in the face of renewed insurgency by these criminals terrorising our people with arms and dangerous weapons.” Oba Olugbenle pleaded with the people to cooperate with the state government on various security measures already mapped out to curb activities of the attackers, saying, “A stitch in time saves nine.”

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party in the state has described the development as increasingly embarrassing. The party, in a statement by Publicity Secretary, Bankole Akinloye, berated Abiodun for allegedly watching the gruesome killings of residents of the state by Fulani herdsmen.

The party said, “It was a soothing relief for us when the ruling government announced its readiness to inaugurate the much talked about Amotekun security outfit over a month ago. We felt government had finally woken up from its long slumber. We thought it was ready to show capacity. Little did we know it would just drift into another round of inactivity.

“For us, it is a growing source of worry to see how, owing to the deafening silence and inaction of the ruling APC government, life has returned to the Hobbesian’s State Of Nature where life was brutish, nasty and short. In many parts of Ketu land and indeed Yewa North axis, parents now prevent their wards from going to school because of fear of Fulani herdsmen.”

According to the PDP, though all the conventional security operatives have proved incapable of arresting the ugly monster, the party is not its idea to canvass or promote “self-help.” It added, “We thought the government had a better idea of containing the carnage after denying seeking Mr Sunday Adeyemo’s intervention a few weeks ago.”

Suspected Fulani herdsmen on Thursday attacked Owode-Ketu and Ijoun villages in Yewa-North LGA of Ogun State and reportedly killed two persons. Our correspondent gathered that the victims, Isiaka Apesin and Oguntosin Adebayo, were killed on their way to their farms by the herdsmen, who laid ambush for them.

Eyewitnesses said after killing the farmers, the herdsmen went into the two villages and started shooting indiscriminately and scaring away residents. According to the source, the killer herdsmen ran into the bush after perpetrating the act. It was gathered that when the day broke, there was tension in the affected villages, a development that made schools and hospitals in the villages to shut down abruptly.

It was gathered that the incident prompted closure of schools, hospitals and other businesses as villagers scampered for safety after the killings and indiscriminate shooting by the assailants. The Baale of Owode-Ketu, Rev. Sanya Fabuyi, who confirmed the incident, stated that the herdsmen came with sophisticated weapons. Fabuyi said the villagers were helpless as the herdsmen shot indiscriminately and caused panic in the area.

Youth leader of the community, Mr Sina Olaleye, said the herdsmen, who put on bulletproof vests, immediately fled into the forest after the attack. He said, “The herdsmen were more than 100 and some of them were putting on bulletproof vests. They are still in the forest now and the police are combing the forest. All schools and businesses have been shut down and our people are indoors for fear of being attacked.”

Police PRO in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident. Meanwhile, Governor Dapo Abiodun, on Thursday, warned perpetrators of violence in Owode-Ketu, Eggua, Igan-Alade and Igbogila areas of the state. He said his administration would leave no stone unturned in curtailing activities of brigands in the state.

The governor said this in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Kunle Somorin. “Ogun cannot be defined by crimes and criminalities. Ogun does not have any haven – safe or unsafe – for killers, bandits, insurgents or cultists. We shall spare no action, including ruthless ones, to bring peace, public order into every hamlet, town and city in the Gateway State,” he stated.

Politics / Fleeing Fulani Herdsmen Return To Ogun Community by prof2007: 2:27am On Feb 09, 2021
Fulani residents at Eggua in the Yewa-North Local Government Area of Ogun State have returned to their bases after a mob burnt houses and Kara market in the community. The mob last week took advantage of the visit of Sunday Igboho to the area over killings of farmers by Fulani herdsmen. The mob set ablaze houses belonging to the Eggua Seriki of Fulani and others, as well as the Kara market. One person reportedly lost his life after the violence.

But it was gathered on Monday that the fleeing Fulani herdsmen who are residents of the area were back to their bases. It was gathered the Fulani herdsmen went back to their houses and Kara market after they got assurance from the police in the state of protection of lives and property.

The state Police PRO, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, who spoke with our correspondent on phone said, “They didn’t run away, they only escaped.
After our meeting with them we have asked them to go and live their lives normally. They escaped from the mob, but, after security agencies have given them the assurance nothing will happen to them, they all agreed to go back. We are working hand-in-hand with the host community to fish out the criminals among them.”

On how far police have gone in unravelling the killers of Dele Olowoniyi, the farmer in Imeko-Afon area of the state, the PPRO said the command had yet to make any arrest. Olowoniyi was found dead on Sunday in his farm. It was alleged that some Fulani herdsmen, who invaded the village, were responsible. But Oyeyemi said, “We are still investigating. By the time we have a breakthrough in our investigation, we will let the public know.”

Politics / Nigerian Senate To Debate Fulani Herdsmen Crisis Today by prof2007: 1:06am On Feb 09, 2021
The Leader of the Senate, Yahaya Abdullahi, has said that the red chamber will discuss the issue of Fulani herdsmen menace across the country on resumption on Tuesday.

Abdullahi, who spoke with journalists in his office, said his deputy who is representing Ondo North in the Senate, Prof. Ajayi Boroffice, will come up with a motion on the issue.

Abdullahi said the Federal Government has a role to play in resolving the crisis, stressing that local political leaders should be encouraged to find lasting solution to it.

The Presidency had opposed a recent directive by the Ondo State Government that Fulani herdsmen should vacate the Ondo forest reserves.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), through his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, had wondered why Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, a legal luminary, could unilaterally issue the quit order without taking cognizance of the constitution that guarantees the rights of citizens to movement and to live in any part of the country.

But Abdullahi said rather than involving itself in the issue, the Presidency should encourage political and traditional rulers to play major roles in resolving it.

He said, “This is a kind of crisis that is tending towards governance trajectory where some political actors and ethnic entrepreneurs are coming into the process and spoiling the waters.

“These are existential issues that have set communities that have hitherto been living together peacefully, against each other, either for political advantage or political matters.

“These are issues that should be resolved at the local level either through dialogue or give and take.

“They are people that had lived together, they should come together and engage in a dialogue.

“The Federal Government is too distant to resolve every communal dispute everywhere. Inter-communal dispute should be resolved by the people in the area.

“They should be resolved by political leaders at the level of the National Assembly, at the level of the governors, local government councilors to sit down with their people so that a lot of these issues can be articulated and addressed by the local population.

“This is what the governors at their levels should do not to always run to the presidency, to solve one dispute here and there How many arms does the Federal Government have?

“This is a federation and we are all politically responsible leaders. At the various level where they are they should sit down and talk to one another on this disputes.

“I can assure you that in no distant time these inter-communal conflagrations would be resolved. I think the way it may be resolved is in the interest of this country’s unity and integrity.

“There would be hopefully tomorrow (Tuesday) or Wednesday a general motion will be sponsored by the Deputy Senate Leader Ajayi Boroffice; he will come with a motion on the issue on the floor of the Senate tomorrow.”

Health / Why Mothers Shouldn’t Give Teething Powder To Babies — Paediatricians by prof2007: 4:22am On Feb 07, 2021
Paediatricians have warned mothers against giving teething powder to their babies, noting that ingredients in the powder may cause harm to them. According to the experts, giving babies teething powder or tablets during teething is not necessary and may rather have adverse effects on them.

They noted that teething powder will never be recommended for a baby by a doctor, stressing that teething is a natural phenomenon and therefore does not require any medication. Speaking with PUNCH Healthwise in an exclusive interview, a Consultant Paediatric Haematologist and Oncologist at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Prof. Edamisan Temiye, said teething is a natural thing and does not cause pain, fever or diarrhoea in babies.

Temiye explained, “Teething powder is not recommended. We don’t believe in teething powder or tablets. They have no effect at all and, therefore, not recommended. Teething should not cause a problem for any baby. Mothers believe teething will make babies have a fever or diarrhoea but this is not true. It is an infection that causes fever and not teething. People just mix anything in the teething powder.

“Teething will not cause the child to have pain, fever or diarrhoea. If the child is feeling pain, something must be causing it. Mothers should stop using teething powder because it is never recommended for babies. The content of the medication can cause harm to them. Most of them contain paracetamol. Some of them may contain things that will harm babies at the end of the day. It is a treatment that is completely unnecessary.”

The paediatrician urged mothers to always take their babies to hospital whenever they have health issues and not just assume. “When the baby has a fever, the baby has an infection and should be taken to the doctor for treatment. The doctor will treat the cause of the fever. Teething will never cause a fever. Some mothers don’t know what is wrong with their babies. Teething will not make the baby restless.

“What we know is that, as soon as babies can control their hands very well, anything they grab, goes to their mouth. That happens to every baby and we know that it is a natural thing,” he said.

Crime / How Herdsmen Turned Ogun Villages To War Zones, Raping, Killing,Destroying Farms by prof2007: 9:28am On Feb 06, 2021
55 year old Kudoro Gabriel was visibly sad and troubled narrating the pathetic experience with herders who severed his fingers with a machete. The farmer who lives at Ibeku village, Ketuland in the Yewa-North LGA of Ogun State said he had been rendered useless after the attack. Saturday PUNCH observed that 3 of his fingers were severed and the points patched. He lamented that he was deformed by Fulani herdsmen who wanted to kill him but ended up chopping off his fingers.

Kudoro said, “The Fulani herdsmen destroyed my barn, where I stored corn. Getting to the place I saw cows eating crops in the barn. I called on the herder who owns them. But instead of checking what the cows did, he rushed at me with a machete. If not that I used my hand to stop the machete before it severed my fingers, he would have cut off my head. As you can see, what can I use the hand for? Nothing. It’s hard to use the hand to work to feed my family. It’s my wife who is taking care of things now.’’

On the loss suffered, the unhappy father said he couldn’t estimate it, adding “What I want is for the government to assist me to provide for my family and myself.” Residents of Ketuland said they had been suffering at the hands of criminal herdsmen for many years. They alleged that the herdsmen maimed, killed and raped some women in the areas. Beleaguered residents, who live in fear of herdsmen on their ancestral lands, walk around in great awe unsure when the marauders may attack them again.

A resident, David Akindele, said that many of those residing in the area were apprehensive of attacks from herdsmen. Our correspondent who visited some villages in Ketuland which include Eselu, Kodera, Asa, Okoso, Moro, Isiku, Seeke-Aje, Igbo-Ire, Koole, Oguba, Ayetoro, Adesina, Ibeku, Agbon-Ojodu, among others, noticed that life has become unbearable for villagers in the agrarian communities.

At Ibeku, one of the villages where soldiers were accused of flogging some villagers for rejecting herders who continually destroy their farms with cows, dwellers had fled for fear of the return of the soldiers. The soldiers had reportedly returned to the community last week to force residents to deny the brutality meted out to them. Monarchs in the Yewa-North council area said they sent a petition on the matter to the state government which said it didn’t receive any. They also said a petition was written to the 35 Artillery Brigade, Alamala, Abeokuta, where the soldiers supposedly came from.

Apart the challenges from killer herdsmen, the communities also contend with bad roads, lack of potable water, electricity and dilapidated schools. Besides, a popular market known as Asa Market serving about 50 communities in the area, had been deserted.

PAINS OF INJUSTICE AMID SOLDIERS’ ALLEGED BIAS
A 30-year-old man, Faleti Ibija, narrated how some soldiers flogged him and some other villagers for refusing herdsmen on their farms to feed their cows.

He said, “I insisted that killer herdsmen must leave our land for peace to reign. As I said that, a soldier in a vehicle that brought him and his colleagues to our community asked me to move close to him. I did and he asked me what I said. I repeated it. He stretched forward and slapped me thrice. He used his boots to kick me and I fell down. He corked his gun and threatened to shoot me.”

49 year old Chief Imam of Ibeku, Maruf Fadebi, said he was almost whisked away by the soldiers for cautioning them against brutalising his people. He, however, blamed past and present administrations in the state for their plight. “Anytime government officials visited our communities, they only made promises. We are suffering and you can see the state of our roads. Past administrations promised to rehabilitate the roads but nothing was done. The present administration has been making promises too. It promised to provide us with good roads, electricity, water and so on. We vote during elections too.’’

Another villager, 40-year-old Samuel Ilo from Agbon-Ojodu, said his younger brother and child were killed by killer herdsmen. He said his younger brother, Benjamin Ilo aged 39 and son, Segun Ilo, aged 10, were killed 7 years ago on their farm while cutting grasses. He stated, “We want the government to help us to end herdsmen attacks. We are farmers but herdsmen who invade our lands have made things tough for us.’’

The case of 35-year-old Olaotan Adelana is pitiable as he’s unable to walk properly and work on his farm after suffering what he called machete attack from some herdsmen. Adelana narrated that on February 20, 2018, some herdsmen came to meet them on their farm to solicit water to drink and returned twice later to make the same request and turn violent.

Adelana said, “There is a river close to our farm but it is a bit deep. The water is not drinkable and we often fetch water from home to the farm. It was the water that we gave them to drink. They took water the first, 2nd time and returned with cows the 3rd time. They chased us away. I wasn’t even aware at first of what was happening until I fell down after a machete landed on me. It was those around that helped me.

“The brutality of herdsmen against the villagers dated back to year 2000. Government should come to our rescue. To eat has been a problem for me. It’s those around that support me. I sold my property to treat myself and my health is not strong again. We don’t want killer herdsmen on our lands again. We don’t want them again in Yewaland. We don’t want them in Ogun State. We don’t want them in Ketuland or Agbon-Ojudu again. They have killed many people in the communities.’’

For Mulero Gabriel, constant herdsmen’s attacks have left the Ogun communities in pains. The 42-year-old said the herders raped women at will and their cows constantly destroyed farms. Gabriel stated, “On December 19, 2020, some herdsmen and soldiers came to our communities. The soldiers said they wanted the herdsmen to bring their cows and live together with us in Ibeku and we rejected saying it’s not possible. This is because each time they come, their cows destroy our crops and they rape our women. One of the Fulani named Ali pointed at four of us that the soldiers should beat us because we rejected them.”

He further said that in 2018 herdsmen killed some people including 3 children at Asa community. According to him, they are unable to endure the unprovoked attacks again hence resisted attempts by herdsmen to return to their community. He added, “They bring cows to our communities because our farms have crops which they usually feed their cows. They care only about feeding their cows with crops which we laboured to grow.”

He added that the villagers were now afraid because of the brutality of soldiers accused of supporting the herdsmen. “The day soldiers came to our Baale’s house at Ibeku, a ceremony was held at Asa. One of my brothers told me I should use my commercial motorcycle to take him to where the ceremony was being held. On our way, we saw some soldiers at Baale’s house. A herdsman identified as Ali pointed at me and my brother to the soldiers. One of the soldiers beat us with a fan belt.

“I didn’t say anything. They told the soldiers that we were chasing them away. But it’s their atrocities that make the villagers ask them to go away with their cows. There is nothing else we do here except farming. There is no government presence. No light, water or good roads. We drink from a stream. Since I was born in this village 42 years ago, I have not seen any government presence.

39 year old Mulero Oluwaseye is another villager who said he was flogged by soldiers who came to the area to force herders on them. He stated that he went to the Baale’s house from his farm that day when he learnt that herdsmen and some soldiers went there. “When we got to Baale’s house, I said accommodating the herdsmen would spell doom for the communities considering the damage they had done in the past. Our yams are not safe. They burnt silos and killed many people including a teacher at Oja-Odan. We can’t plant crops again. They would feed them to their cows. They operate as if there is a war ongoing in our villages.”

Sharing his experience regarding herdsmen attacks in the area, Olabisi Ikudaisi, a resident of Agbon-Ojodu, said soldiers once invaded the community and ordered him to lead them to the house of one of the Baales in the communities. Ikudaisi who is also the Vice Chairman of Police Community Relations Committee in the axis, said they demanded the Baale’s mobile when they got to his place and he wasn’t around.

“I was coming from Oja-Odan to Asa that day. I asked one of them for their mission when they didn’t see the Baale. He got angry and I told him who I am. I said I am from the village and also a Vice Chairman of the PCRC representing Imeko and Ayetoro area command. He got angrier and when he decided to talk to me, he asked me the month herdsmen should be in the village. I directed his question to some women around the Baale’s place at the time. But they said only Baale could answer the soldier’s question.”

He added that the soldiers at that point expressed collective anger and one of them said they cannot force us to talk, stressing that we would be responsible for our security if they left. The 63-year old retired teacher who is also a farmer traced the history of herdsmen’s attacks on residents of the area to 2000. “Herdsmen have been in the area since 1984. We related peacefully but around 2000, they started committing several bad acts. They destroyed our crops, rape women and if you express anger over their destructive acts, they would become violent.’’

Ikudaisi said the herdsmen once told them to harvest their crops from the farms when they complained that their cows were destroying them. He further stated that whenever cows destroyed their farms and they reported to the police, the offending herder would only be told to pay a meager amount out of what was destroyed. “We planted many crops such as okro, soya beans, plantains, beans but we cannot do that anymore. We cannot be planting crops for cows to eat.”

Speaking on behalf of women in the communities, 47-year-old Ogunjobi Deborah begged government to end the activities of criminal herdsmen in the villages. She said the situation had peaked as the hoodlums raped, used their cows to destroy farms with fruitful crops and made the villages insecure. “We can’t give an actual figure of the number of women raped by the killer herdsmen. But many women have fallen victims. They maim or kill any of their victims. Our children can no longer go to the stream in our land. We are not in a war.”

At Asa village, the villagers showed our correspondent pictures of over 40 people allegedly killed by criminal herdsmen in the area. Speaking on behalf of the community, the Apesin of Eseluland, Chief Samuel Edun, said they had handed over the matter of the killer herdsmen to God. He noted that for many years killer herdsmen had made their village unsafe by perpetrating criminal acts with impunity.

“They killed some ladies after raping them. They invaded people’s houses to kill them and kidnapped for ransom. Our crops have been destroyed,” he stated. Edun also said the villagers perform electoral duties and strive to grow crops and increase food production, adding that herdsmen menace had caused fear in residents living in the area. “Cows eat newly sown and grown cocoa. Government needs the trees. We also need them. Government encourages us to plant trees but when we do, herders will take cows to the farms to graze on them. Government should save us from killer herdsmen.”

While narrating a nasty experience with the herders, 55-year-old Hannah Ogundele, nearly betrayed emotion. She stated that raping of females was a common act among the killer herdsmen. “We went to the farm that day to cut grass. We were close to the river in our village when we saw herdsmen who started chasing us. We ran as fast as our legs could take us. They caught one of us but we didn’t notice until we got home. We raised the alarm when we got home that we didn’t see the person. The men in the village went in search of her. Her body was later found the following day where they dumped it.

“We couldn’t sleep in the village that day. Many villagers left to sleep in Ibeku because the herdsmen later returned to the village and started shooting. We thought everything was settled and went to the river after sometime but one of us was kidnapped and raped again.’’ She stated that women now go to the stream in a group of 20, noting that “the stream is not even a flowing one. We always dig holes to fetch the little water we get. What is more painful is that one of the teachers in a school in the community was killed and the teacher has not been replaced.’’

She added, “As big as the school in the community is, only 3 teachers are there. We work because of our children. It’s not good for them not to go to school.’’ Also, Abidemi Ilo lost his father and 3 fingers to herdsmen attack. He stated that on the day her father was killed, he ran away with him but they caught up with his father. “My father and I went to the river that day. As we were returning home I didn’t know they were at our back. They used a stick to hit my father without any provocation. I lifted up the one who did hit my dad but I later saw that they were 8. I was injured and my fingers affected. I still managed to run away and told my dad to do so too. It was later I heard that they killed my father. He was 65 years old then.’’

GOVT, MONARCH, POLICE EXPRESS VIEWS
In his view, the President, National Integrity Youths Movement in Nigeria, Dr Tayo Komolafe, warned the Federal Government and governors against forcing the people to resort to self-help. In a statement titled, “Don’t push us to self-help, IYM warns Federal Government, governors and Yoruba obas,” gave a 7-day ultimatum to address the herders menace in the South-West, adding that failure to do so would make the group to mobilise its members across the region for self-help.

He said, “We are calling on the government and the obas pretending innocence of the unabated and consistent killings, kidnappings, raping and destruction in the states in Yorubaland that if by 7 days nothing serious is done, we shall mobilise our members to defend our land and people.” Komolafe said since the governors and the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) had sworn to protect the citizens without doing so, it would be illegal to be law-abiding in a state of lawlessness.

Eselu of Eseluland , Oba Akintunde Akinyemi, said both the state and the federal governments had failed the people on the task of securing lives and property. Oba Akinyemi said failure of the ruling class made a Yoruba activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, to move in a bid to rescue his people from killer herdsmen. Igboho visited some of the troubled villages including Eggua where some houses belonging to the Seriki of Fulani and the Kara market were set ablaze.

The monarch said he received Igboho in his palace in Ketuland before he proceeded to other areas in the local government. He stated that he blessed the activist and sought his help to rescue the villagers from the grip of killer herdsmen. “What is happening now is a sign that both the state and federal governments have failed. People are trying to defend their territory. If our right had been protected, Igboho would not be the one chasing killer herdsmen away from the South-West. It is the responsibility of the police.’’

The monarch said it was wrong that despite an injunction restraining herdsmen from bringing cows into the council area, they still engaged in it without care. On the petition to the government on developments in the area, the monarch said that nothing had been done. He stated, “That is why I said the situation now is a sign of a failed government. When there have been reports in the media, petitions, radio and TV discussions, up till now, the government has not said a word about the matter. Nothing; not even a meeting.”

Reacting to the villagers’ allegations, Seriki Hausawa of Egbaland, Alhaji Ibrahim Hassan, urged peace between the communities and the herdsmen. He said, “We don’t want a situation where this crisis will escalate in this country. My advice is that we should be united in this country. We are one. We don’t want to separate. I call on the Fulani, Hausa community and Yoruba communities to ensure peaceful co-existence.’’

In its reaction, the state government said it has not failed the people contrary to the positions of the monarch and IYM. Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Communications, Remmy Hazzan, described the statements as unfair. He said, “Ogun State government has not failed and I don’t want to believe that the Federal Government has failed too. That doesn’t mean that there are no grey areas needing some immediate address. That is why we clamour for restructuring.’’

Hazzan noted that it was unfair to say that the state government had failed its people in terms of security considering what he described as the enormous work the government was doing to ensure peace in the state. “That we have failed is not a fair statement and I don’t want to believe that the monarch will say that to the state government. We have not failed as a government .No. There are lapses in security. Whatever it is we are facing today we will handle it within the best allowable constitutional framework. We haven’t failed and not in any way gravitating towards failure.”

Also, the police in the state said it was working with the parties involved in the crisis to find a solution to it. State Police PRO, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, noted that the Commissioner of Police had held a meeting with the communities and Fulani settlers. Oyeyemi said, “We had a robust session and the two parties have resolved to work together to fish out those perpetrating crime therein.”

Crime / Gunmen Raid FCT Community, Kidnap PUNCH Reporter & 2 Others by prof2007: 8:00am On Feb 05, 2021
Gunmen on Wednesday abducted a PUNCH reporter, Okechukwu Nnodim, at his house in the Arab Road area of Kubwa, Abuja. The kidnappers also attacked his neighbours and went away with the two sons of a widow, Mrs Faith Gbeyide.

Narrating the incident on Thursday, Nnodim’s wife, Oluchi, explained that her husband was working on his laptop when five strange men scaled the fence around 11pm and entered their compound, ordering them to open the door. She said the gunmen fired several shots at the windows and subsequently pulled down the burglar-proof iron after which they forced the front door open.

“My husband asked me to stay with the children in their room. I heard the men asking him to bring out money but he told them he didn’t have money in the house. They took our phones and marched him out of the house. They went to our neighbour’s house and also abducted her two sons.”

Madam Gbeyide explained that her son opened the door when the men threatened to kill them if they refused. She said, “They took the N9,000 in my purse, upturned the TV in the room and went away with my first son, Victor. My second son, Gbenga, started following them and they also took him away.”

FCT police spokesperson, ASP Miriam Yusuf confirmed the incident.

Health / With 75% Fatality Rate In China: Nipah Virus Could Be Next Pandemic by prof2007: 7:00am On Feb 03, 2021
An outbreak of the Nipah virus in China, with a fatality rate of up to 75%, could potentially be the next big pandemic risk, with giant pharmaceutical companies unprepared while currently focusing on Covid-19, according to a report by the Access to Medicine Foundation.

“Nipah virus is another emerging infectious disease that causes great concern. Nipah could blow any moment. The next pandemic could be a drug-resistant infection,” said Jayasree KIyer, executive director of Netherlands-based Access to Medicine Foundation.

The virus is rare and spread by fruit bats, which can cause flu-like symptoms and brain damage. It can cause encephalitis (inflammation of the brain), according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Usual treatment is supportive care. An outbreak of Nipah virus in India's Kerala state in 2018 claimed 17 lives. At the time, countries like Saudi Arabia and UAE temporarily banned frozen and processed fruit and vegetable imports from Kerala as a result of the outbreak. Also, at that time, health officials believed Nipah outbreaks in Bangladesh and India were perhaps associated with drinking of date palm juice.

The 2021 Access to Medicine Index report takes a look at the actions of 20 of the world's leading pharmaceutical companies to make medicines, vaccines and diagnostics more accessible. It found that research and development for Covid-19 increased in the past year but that other pandemic risks have so far gone unaddressed.

“This Index was prepared during the worst public health crisis in a century – which has revealed the chronic inequalities of access to medicine like never before. Yet, after years of encouraging access planning, we are now seeing a strategic shift in this direction. This could radically change how fast access to new products is achieved – if company leadership is determined to ensure people living in low- and middle-income countries are not last in line,” the report quoted Jayasree as saying.

Politics / Herdsmen Are Vacating Ondo Forests But Leaving Trails Of Blood, Tears - Abitogun by prof2007: 6:09am On Feb 01, 2021
Herdsmen are vacating Ondo forests, but leaving on their paths trails of destruction, blood and tears

Ayede Ogbese is one of the communities in Ondo State where Fulani herdsmen are wreaking havoc. In this interview with PETER DADA, Chief Oladimeji Abitogun, the Odopetu of Ayede Ogbese in Akure North LGA, speaks about the spate of insecurity in the state and Nigeria as a whole

Q. In recent times, the kidnappings that have occurred along Akure-Owo Expressway between Ayede Ogbese and Uso communities are alarming. As a traditional chief, why do you think this is happening in your domain?

A. The fact of the matter is that at a point between Ogbese River; which is our patrimony and very important to the people of Ayede-Ogbese; between that point and the community of Uso, you would understand that there are linguistic, geographical and cultural affinities between the people of Ayede-Ogbese and Uso. That area known as Oke-Odo, Kajola in Uso is where you find these activities of Fulani militias who are armed to the teeth and ready to kill. They come to the highway, a major highway linking South-West with the northern part of the country and the South-South as well as the eastern part of Nigeria. So, they use that strategic location to stage their dastardly, often murderous kidnappings. Until recent, we didn’t even know that some of them had taken refuge in our community.

So, the description that our community has become a place of refuge to these people may not be totally correct. Political correctness and the constitution of this county would say all of us can live together, but you’ll find the Fulani from their historical antecedents often display this tendency to invade different tribes of Nigeria, if need be, take over the leadership, kill and ultimately install themselves as a kind of caliphate and seize the instrument of governance. The most visible will be the case of Ilorin. Even as I’m talking to you, in Southern Kaduna, these people have sacked indigenes and installed themselves as overlords in more than 147 towns and villages. That is not going to happen here.

Q. You said what they were trying to do is not going to happen here. What are those things they are trying to do?

A. I’m not just the 3rd ranking chief in Ayede-Ogbese kingdom; professionally, I’m a journalist. Words matter to us. Beyond that, I have a degree in English, Literary and Curriculum Studies. What they are trying to do is so clear to everybody. We know that from the intelligence available to the leadership of our kingdom. These people will come, pretend they have a genuine agenda of integrating with people in the community and they are harmless. But if I start to count on the tips of my fingers, you’ll understand that even when they say they are coming for simple things like basic health facilities, you’ll see under their clothes dagger and swords sheathed. For what purpose? Sometimes, we get so proactive. We begin to collect those swords from them. You can’t be bringing things like that into medical facilities.

Sometimes they enter markets with swords under their clothes. Of course, we have a very big cosmopolitan market in our community. The market is patronized from the entire West African sub-region, and then somebody comes into that market carrying a sword. To do what? That is the one that is so visible. The one we also know is that under the animals they rear, they wrap AK-47 . You would think it’s their personal wears and foodstuff .

We are aware from what some of the freed hostages told us that when they collect ransoms, they don’t even know the denomination. That means they are illiterate. Some of them do not even speak the Nigerian variant of Fulfude, which is the language of the Fulani people. If you want to start a conversation with them in simple English, they don’t even understand because they speak French. They believe in the unity of the Fulani nation across wherever they exist in Africa. So, they think they’re coming here to give consolidation to interests that are not clear, to struggles that are not known to anybody and to individuals not completely loyal to the Nigerian nation.

Q. In your submission, you believe they are not Nigerians. How did you say they were consolidating an interest in Nigeria?

A. It’s not difficult to know. For example, the people and government of Ondo State took a fundamental position; something that is backed by the constitution; that these people cannot continue to illegally occupy Government Forest Reserves. The herders themselves did not speak. A voice echoed from the seat of power in Abuja. Isn’t that enough indication that they think you’re hurting one of their own out there? Peace loving Nigerians actually voted whoever is leading this country today. These people they are defending; I’m sure they never even voted. While the rest of us were on the queues exercising our franchise as free citizens of Nigeria, remember that these people were plotting how to kill the majority of us, how to prevent us from exercising our voting rights. And then, we defied all of these to put the government in power. Only for certain operatives of government to start using the instruments of state to defend lawlessness.

Q. Few days ago, there was a meeting where everybody agreed with what Governor Akeredolu has done by giving that 4-point order. Even representatives of MACBAN supported it. Do you see sincerity in their purported support?

A. Honestly, I don’t. Preliminary comments made by the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti, was almost going to scape-goat the media, saying the intent and purpose of what Governor Akeredolu said was misconstrued in the media. Which media? You don’t know that when you take on the media as a major institution like that anywhere in the world, you’re really trying to bring the nation itself down? Honestly, people tend to see governance and democracy as events. Governor Fayemi is in a position to know better. He was a practising journalist at a time as well as an agitator and pro-democracy activist. I give that to him.

From the look of things and with what Miyetti Allah said, the position of Governor Akeredolu is unassailable. The bad eggs should be fished out and their members in the forests should get government permission. What they are not telling the world which we now know is that the Bororo, the cattle Fulanis, do not even interact.

They don’t have respect for the liberated Fulanis. So, for all we care, everything that transpired at the meeting, the Fulani ethnic militia operate by an agenda that is uttered and directed and anchored by the devil. The other people, decent as they are, may not be able to speak to the minds, agenda and actions of the violent Fulani.

And guess what, since the expiration of the 7 days ultimatum given by the government of Ondo State, what have they been doing in the forests? Yes, they are leaving the forest reserves, but on their paths, they’re leaving on their trail blood, destruction, sorrow, tears. Coming out in a huge exodus and destroying everything they see on the way. They are not just using AK-47.

Q. As a traditional chief who is close to the people, what do you think can be done to flush the criminal herders out of your domain?

A. Honestly, I’ve a confession, if you ask me about what can be done, I look at the solution that was applied in a place like Ijare Community (where lightning killed 36 cows) No matter how crazy a Fulani ethnic militia is today, he will not venture into Ijare. Secondly, I look at Sunday Igboho , maybe it’s a matter of boldness and courage but it takes the extraordinary for somebody to disarm a Fulani militia firing AK-47. That kind of boldness in Sunday Igboho is something that has to be replicated.

Q. You are commending Igboho for the steps he took, but some people are crucifying him for doing that. What is your take?

A. Who are the ones saying that? I’ve not heard that. On the contrary, people are misinterpreting the initial silence of a section of the leadership of the South-West. For example, they said Iba Gani Adams did not speak so early as the Aare Ona Kakanfo but as a traditional generalisimo, he said he was studying the situation and looking at the intelligence behind it all. And fundamentally, he has no disagreement with Sunday Igboho.

Q. You said you are close to some victims of herdsmen attacks in your axis and some of them narrated that their abductors took them to the bush and they were hearing people talking, but people of the community are owners of the land, can’t the obas do something against all trespassers?

A.My brother, do you know one thing, do not let us deceive ourselves. What the indigenous individuals who have run this nation in succession after the exit of British colonialists, what they have done is to pursue extreme radical agenda against the traditional royalty in this country. They’ve emasculated our traditional institutions.

Q. From the revelations of victims, they said these bandits have links with some people in the town who act as spies?

A. That may not be completely false. There must be people who tell them that their targets have big pockets.

Q. Can’t the community investigate and take necessary action?

A. Communities do investigate but we don’t have power to arrest. So, what do we do? We provide reasonable intelligence to the police or NSCDC command and again you are at their mercy. Let me give you this narrative, it will interest you, the late Alayede of Ayede-Ogbese, Oba Isaac Oluyele decided to install someone as the Seriki Hausawa. While that ceremony was on, Chief Olu Falae, a prominent Nigerian politician was in attendance to honour that occasion. A loser in the contest, one individual called Mustapha who happened to be a so- called organizer and youth leader in the Hausa community for the ruling APC, decided to bring almajiris. They invaded the palace ground where the ceremony was going on. They started pulling down canopies, throwing chairs. So, in the wisdom of Alayede-in-Council, a decision was reached that, that kind of impunity could not be allowed.

Going back to the issues of the freed victims, I will cite for example, Olatubosun Johnson, son of Aro of Uso. His father is 3rd in royal hierarchy of Uso land. When he was kidnapped, they took him for two days; just because he was blindfolded, they were taking him around the same locality, beating and torturing him. When eventually they released the hood on his face, he was able to recognised one community in the locality. That’s was how he knew he was around Ayede-Ogbese.

Look at the case of Boniface, an employee of Petroleum Training Institute, Effurun, Delta State who was kidnapped on Sunday and released Thursday. He was taken around the same spot Olatubosun Johnson was kidnapped and he was released around Bolohunduro and Eleyowo. What are they doing all this kind of stupid stuff for.

Q. What do you think can be done about this issue?

A.Somebody must be held accountable for the broken chain; the link that is broken in the hierarchy of command, whether in the military or police. Whoever is weakening that strong link that must be effective in terms of law enforcement, whoever is sending that wrong signal that these people enjoy the protection of the Presidency or in the police command, that person must be identified.

Politics / We Will Rather Die Than Accept Seriki Fulani Back - Igangan Residents Vow by prof2007: 7:13pm On Jan 29, 2021
Residents of Igangan in Ibarapa North-West LCDA of Oyo State have vowed never to allow the now-ejected Seriki Fulani, Abdulkadri Saliu, to return to the community. According to them, accepting the Seriki Fulani back in the town was tantamount to self-suicide, adding that they would rather die than to accept Saliu back in the town.

“The entire town would rather go into self-suicide than to accept Seriki back. We would rather lay down our lives than for us and our generations to come to be subjected to the evil reign of Seriki again,” the Convener, Igangan Development Advocates, Oladiran Oladokun, told The PUNCH on Friday.

Oladokun was reacting to a statement made by the Seriki Fulani that he would consider moving back to Igangan. “If given opportunity to return to the community I would consider moving back to Igangan,” Saliu, whose family members have settled temporarily in Ilorin, Kwara State, had said on Thursday.

The PUNCH earlier reported that a popular Yoruba rights activist, Sunday Adeyemo, well known as Sunday Igboho, had asked herdsmen accused of perpetrating sundry crimes in Ibarapaland to leave within 7 days. At the expiration of the ultimatum, Igangan residents, emboldened by Igboho’s presence had ejected the Seriki Fulani and his herders out of the rustic town.

Speaking with our correspondent on Friday, Oladokun said residents of the town have been exhaling breathe of fresh air and relief since the eviction of Saliu and his men. He said farmers now have renewed hope of returning to their farms to continue agricultural activities without fear of being raped, kidnapped and killed.

The IDA leader said the people of the community would not want any order that would truncate the momentary peace and tranquility that they have started enjoying. “Our people will not allow that reign, that enslavement to come back now that they have tasted freedom a little. We are now relieved. People couldn't go to farm for so many months but are now thinking of going back to their farms and are now having hope of a better life and you want to take that hope from them? Our people won’t allow that,” the youth leader told The PUNCH.

Continuing, Oladokun said, “In the media, people perceive what happened in Igangan as an exaggeration. But for about 20 years, Igangan lived under the oppressive blood carnage championed by the Seriki himself. How do I know? Why is it that on every occasion, no Fulani has been prosecuted?”

“If the Seriki is really who he claims to be and he cares so much about the town, why did he not bring out at least one culprit and say, ‘Igangan people, this one that you claimed killed a farmer last week, this is him, we got him for you. We don’t want criminals amongst us, we don’t people to tarnish our image.’ Why hasn’t the Seriki done that over the years?

“Seriki claimed he had no control over Igangan but it is a lie; he held control over the town and the killings, he held sway over Igangan, even the Asigangan of Igangan land and the chiefs were helpless and they bowed to him. That is why when they (herders) committed a crime, they would go to him (Seriki) and he would ask them to relax even if they killed or raped a woman in the farm. He would tell them it was the Ja’mah (congregation) that did it,” he alleged.

The IDA leader further urged the Presidency and the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, to launch a comprehensive investigation into the allegations levelled against the Seriki Fulani to uncover and ascertain the truth of the matter and bring the culprits to book.

Health / Pregnant Women & Nursing Mothers Shouldn’t Take Covid Vaccines – Prof by prof2007: 6:50pm On Jan 29, 2021
Professor of Virology, Oyewale Tomori, says it is medically not advisable for pregnant women and lactating mothers to receive Covid vaccines. Tomori, who is the Chairman, Expert Review Committee on COVID-19, stated this on Friday in a video posted on Twitter by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19.

He also confirmed the development when contacted by The PUNCH, adding that clinical trials done to ascertain efficacy and reaction of the vaccines now in circulation were not carried out on pregnant and nursing mothers. Amongst globally known Covid vaccines brands are Pfizer/BioNTech, Oxford–AstraZeneca, Moderna and Sputnik V.

The don said, “For now, we don’t have any evidence for that because the trials that were done did not include pregnant women and lactating mothers. So, we cannot tell you how it is going to react in them. However, if we go by the past, I will give you an example, in 1985, ’86, around that time, we had this huge epidemic of yellow fever in Nigeria and we vaccinated everybody.

“At that time, inadvertently, a lot of pregnant women were also vaccinated against that virus but then, we followed them up for 3 to 4 years and there was nothing untoward that happened to them. So, ideally, there shouldn’t be any reason we should have that but then, you are taking precaution; until you test it, you cannot be sure of what is going to happen.

“In dealing with pregnant women, ordinarily, when there is no epidemic, you don’t want to give it to them because you don’t know what is going to happen to the fetus. But in an epidemic, when the mother is also exposed to that disease, and she gets sick and she dies, the fetus will also die, and therefore you give a vaccine during a raging epidemic to the women in hope that even if the baby does not survive, the mother will at least survive.”

There have been talks about Covid vaccines in Nigeria with the Federal Government saying it expects to receive 100,000 doses of Covid vaccines anytime soon. Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, had in December informed the Senate Nigeria would require over N400bn to vaccinate 70% of Nigeria’s population at $8 per vaccine.

But American philanthropist and Microsoft Co-founder, Bill Gates, said Nigeria does not need to spend too much on acquiring Covid vaccines but should rather focus more on revitalising the weak and underfunded health sector, especially the primary health care centres.
