Education / COVID-19 Second Wave: All Schools In Nigeria Closed Till 18 January 2021 by prof2007: 11:07pm On Dec 21, 2020
Nigerian Government on Monday 21 December ordered closure of all schools in the country till 18th of January, 2021. This became necessary following the 2nd wave of COVID-19 pandemic in the country. Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha, said this at a press briefing of the task force in Abuja.

Mustapha said schools in the country are to remain shut till announced date in order to enable new measures to take effect. “The PTF on the advice of the Federal Ministry of Education expects that schools would have vacated from the 18th December 2020 and remain closed till at least the 18th of January, 2021 to enable the measures introduced to take effect,” Mustapha added.

Government also directed that persons above the age of 60yrs and/or with comorbidities to stay at home and avoid crowded areas.

“Also all non-essential travels; both domestic and international during this holiday season are seriously discouraged.”

Politics / Pantheon Of African Heroes: Martin Luther King Jr. by prof2007: 10:45am On Dec 20, 2020
Martin Luther King Jr. (born Michael King Jr.; January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was an American Christian minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968. King is best known for advancing civil rights through nonviolence and civil disobedience, inspired by his Christian beliefs and the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi.

On October 14, 1964, King won the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality through nonviolent resistance. In 1965, he helped organize two of the three Selma to Montgomery marches. In his final years, he expanded his focus to include opposition towards poverty, capitalism, and the Vietnam War.

In 1968, King was planning a national occupation of Washington, D.C., to be called the Poor People's Campaign, when he was assassinated on April 4 in Memphis, Tennessee. His death was followed by riots in many U.S. cities. Allegations that James Earl Ray, the man convicted of killing King, had been framed or acted in concert with government agents persisted for decades after the shooting. King was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day was established as a holiday in cities and states throughout the United States beginning in 1971; the holiday was enacted at the federal level by legislation signed by President Ronald Reagan in 1986. Hundreds of streets in the U.S. have been renamed in his honor, and the most populous county in Washington State was rededicated for him. The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., was dedicated in 2011.

Foreign Affairs / Hillary Clinton Renews Call For Abolition Of US Electoral College by prof2007: 11:32pm On Dec 14, 2020
Former U.S. First Lady and Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, on Monday renewed her call for abolition of the country’s Electoral College. She made the call in a tweet shortly after voting as an elector alongside her husband and former President Bill Clinton in New York.

“I believe we should abolish the Electoral College and select our president by the winner of the popular vote, same as every other office. But while it still exists, I was proud to cast my vote in New York for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris,” the tweet reads.

Hilary lost the 2016 presidential election to Donald Trump in spite of winning the popular votes. Trump was elected after securing 304 electoral vote to Clinton’s 227.

The Clintons were joined by Gov. Andrew Cuomo alongside 26 other electors on Monday who formerly sealed Biden’s victory in the Nov. 3 election in New York.

The U.S. Electoral College is a group of 538 presidential electors who converge in state capitals every December of an election year to ratify the election of the President and the Vice President following the recently concluded general polls on Nov. 3. The number of electors in each state is equivalent to the number seats in state’s legislature.

A candidate requires an absolute majority of 270 electoral votes to win the election. But if no candidate secures the 270 votes, Congress holds a contingent election to pick the president and Vice President. Biden’s election is expected to be ratified in the Electoral College held in all state capitals on Monday following the Nov. 3 general polls.

The former Vice President is projected to receive 306 electoral votes to be secured against Trump’s 232 electoral votes who is still contesting the election results.

Health / Kissing Newborn Babies Can Give Them Viral Meningitis - Medical Experts by prof2007: 2:52pm On Dec 13, 2020
A consultant paediatrician at the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, Yaba, Lagos, Dr. Agatha David, says kissing a newborn on the lips or any part of the face can lead to meningitis, a viral infection caused by herpes. She warned parents against allowing outsiders to carry their newborns, especially within the first month of life, noting that their immune system is still very fragile to fight off pathogens or environmental germs.

Dr. David, who is the head, Clinical Trial Research Group and Chief Research Fellow at NIMR, disclosed this during an interview with PUNCH HealthWise, adding that some adults have blisters on the side of their lips caused by Herpes Simplex virus, and can also have it transmitted to a newborn through their breath.

The paediatrician said, “A baby’s immune system is not properly developed to fight off the infection. Herpes can be fatal at whatever age, and can manifest like blisters or fever burns. Herpes doesn’t clear, as it stays in the body and manifests when the immune system is suppressed. Kissing a baby on the face can cause such an infection that affects even the brain, and can lead to death,” she warned.

David explained that meningitis is an inflammation of the fluid and membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. She said it is often less severe than bacterial meningitis, and that most people get better on their own, but babies younger than one month old are more likely to have severe illness from viral meningitis.

“People displaying any visible signs of illness or common cold, cough, runny nose, sore throat, or a rash should not come into close contact with a newborn. People should treat newborns with respect. Wash and sanitise your hands when paying a visit to a home where there is a new baby. Don’t get too close. It is our culture to show love and care to a newborn, but such acts can endanger the life of the baby,” the consultant warned.

The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention also warned that herpes virus, which commonly affects the mouth in the form of cold sores, can cause significant infections in newborns.

“Herpes outbreaks can be painful or unsightly in adults; and when a newborn is infected with herpes, serious and, sometimes, fatal complications can occur,” CDC warned.

Crime / Teenager Fakes Own Kidnap With Lover, Demands N30m From Family by prof2007: 10:07am On Dec 08, 2020
Lagos State Police Command has arrested a teenager, Ujunwa Offiah, for allegedly conspiring with her boyfriend, Blessed Ifesinachi, to fake her kidnap and demand N30m ransom from her family. The police also arrested an accomplice, Precious Chukwu, 22, whose phone was reportedly used to negotiate with Offiah’s family.

The state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, while parading the suspects at the command headquarters on Monday, said the principal suspect, Ifesinachi, was at large. Odumosu said, “This is a case of conspiracy and staged kidnapping, and the man at the centre of this case, who happens to be a Uber driver, is still at large. We are going after him because he conspired with one of these two ladies, Offiah, who faked her kidnap.

“He cleverly used the phone of another girlfriend, Precious (Chukwu), to contact Offiah’s family, informing them that their daughter had been kidnapped. He requested N30m from Offiah’s family to get her freed and during negotiations, which involved the police, they settled for N700,000. While the money was being dropped, we took action and in the process arrested Offiah and Precious.”

Speaking with PUNCH Metro, Offiah said she joked about the kidnap with Ifesinachi, adding that she was surprised he took it seriously. She said, “I met Ifesinachi in October, and when we got talking, I jokingly told him to kidnap me so that he would collect ransom from my sister. I never knew that he took it seriously until he told me he had gone to the village to meet a native doctor and also discussed with his guys about the deal. When he said he was ready, he realised that I was scared and threatened to kill me if I informed anybody of the plan.

"So, I refused to tell anybody because he is a cultist. On November 27, on my way back from school, I went to meet him and a girl, Patience, at 2nd Rainbow, and from there, we went to a hotel. At the hotel, he called my sister to demand N30m as ransom, but when I heard that my grandmother had collapsed in the village because of what happened to me, I told him to accept any amount they offered.

“On Thursday, he went to get the money and came back to the hotel on Friday morning. He told me he collected N600,000 and released me thereafter. When I saw my family members, I told them that I was kidnapped by some guys. I lied to my family and the police, because he threatened to kill me, including my sister’s children. It was when I saw his girlfriend and my schoolbag that I confessed about the whole kidnap.”

Chukwu denied knowing that her phone was being used to negotiate the ransom. She said, “He (Ifesinachi) asked for my phone that he wanted to use it for business. I never knew he wanted to use it to do this kind of a thing. I was at my workplace when the police came to arrest me.”

Crime / Lagos Car Wash Operator Bolts Away With Customer’s Car by prof2007: 6:04am On Dec 07, 2020
Men of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested a Lagos-based car wash operator, Idris Ayotunde, after he absconded with his customer’s car. He was said to have fled with the car to Ogun State. The OND holder from a polytechnic in one of the South-West states, reportedly started the car wash business at Jimoh bus stop, Shasha, Akowonjo, Lagos State, a few months ago.

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed these in a statement on Sunday. The PPRO said the car owner took it for vacuum cleaning and handed over the key to the suspect.

“Since he did not have vacuum cleaner in his car wash, he decided to take it to another car wash nearby. But he changed his mind on the road and bolted away with the car. It was on his way to Ibadan where he intended to dispose the car that he was arrested. The owner of the car, Mrs Shofidiya Tosin, who reported the case at the Shasha Police Station, has been contacted,” Oyeyemi added.

On how the suspect was arrested, Oyeyemi said, “The suspect was arrested at Alakija village via Olodo around 8.17 am by a safer highway patrol team which was on stop and search along the Abeokuta-Ibadan Expressway. The team stopped the car and demanded its documents, which the suspect was unable to produce, consequent upon which he was taken to Odeda divisional headquarters where the DPO, Ajayi Williams, personally interrogated the suspect and found out he actually stole the car.”

The PPRO said the state Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun, has ordered the transfer of the case to Lagos, where the car was stolen.

Crime / How Abdulrasheed Maina Lavished Pensioners’ Money In Dubai, USA, Abuja by prof2007: 3:44am On Dec 06, 2020
The trial of Abdulrasheed Maina, former chairman, Pension Reform Task Team, (PRTT) continued on Thursday, December 3, 2020, with the prosecution witness nine (PW9), Rouqayyah Ibrahim, telling the Federal High Court, Abuja, presided over by Justice Okong Abang how Maina acquired properties in Dubai, United Arab Emirate, United States of America, and a $2million property in Jabi, Abuja.

The witness, who is an EFCC detective revealed that a prosecution witness, Adamu Modibbo, who testified to the EFCC regarding the said Jabi, Abuja property, allegedly died of Covid-19 after his statement to the Commission. She also revealed that about 32 documents, hard discs and flash drives relating to properties linked to Maina and his family and details of some of his investments in Dubai and in the US were recovered from him.

“Particularly in Dubai, investigation revealed that his company, Northrich Company owned over 50 cars that were used for transportation business and he owns a villa in a highbrow area in Dubai. His wife Laila Abdurrasheed also owns cleaning services, called Spotless and Flawless. We also recovered pay slips during our investigation,” she said.

The witness also disclosed that investigation proved that another of Maina’s company, Kangolo Dynamic does no business but that the defendant created a bank account for it in which his name did not appear anywhere on the account documentation even though he was in control of all the deposits in it.

She also told the court that investigation showed that Colster Logistics, belonging to Maina had a Fidelity Bank dollar account which had an inflow of over $400,000, 00 (Four Hundred Thousand Dollars) from cash deposits as at the time the company was investigated. She further told the court that over N500 million was discovered in the account of Kangolo Dynamic, within the years Maina was chairman, PRTT.

According to the witness, in the course of the investigation, letters were written to the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, to verify the authenticity of the driver’s license used in opening some of the accounts; Code of Conduct Bureau ( CCB) for Maina’s declared assets; Federal Civil Service Commission, Office of the Head of Service of the Federation (HOSF) and Accontant General of the Federation, (AGF), to confirm if Maina was still a civil servant and for his pay slips.

Also written was the Federal Inland Revenue Service,FIRS, for the tax returns of his companies and the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) for the registration documentation of the companies and their annual returns. All the documents and written responses of the government agencies were tendered as exhibits with prosecution counsel, M.S. Abubakar, praying the court to foreclose the right of the defendants to respond to the admissibility of the documents; hence they had no legal representation.

Justice Abang upheld the prosecution’s prayer, noting that opportunity was offered to the defendants to be in court to oppose the admissibility of the document in evidence, but they failed to appear and also failed to engage counsel of their choice. Justice Abang adjourned the matter till December 4, 2020, for continuation of trial.

Maina is being tried in absentia, having jumped bail and refused to present himself for trial.

Health / Why Nursing Mothers Should Not Lie Down To Breastfeed by prof2007: 11:24pm On Dec 05, 2020
Dr. Odochi Ewurum, a Consultant Paediatrician at Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia, has warned on the dangers of nursing mothers breastfeeding their babies while lying down. He gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Umuahia on Tuesday. She said the practice could lead to infections and other complications in the child.

She said a mother was not supposed to be lying down, while breastfeeding her baby. According to her, the mother should rather sit comfortably, carry the child up and make sure the child relaxes properly to the breast.

Ewurum said: “One of the disadvantages of lying down is that as the child sucks, it could aspirate. The breast milk can leave the child’s stomach and enter into the lungs and this can cause lung infection. Also, as the child is sucking, some of the breast milk might drip out of the mouth into the ear. It becomes a foreign body in the ear and with that, ear infection can occur. If the breast milk enters the nose, ear or eye, it is a foreign body. Breast milk should get to the stomach where it will be digested and become nutritive to the child."

Ewurum said that the stress of breastfeeding at night by nursing mothers made it imperative for relations to come around to help out whenever a woman put to bed. “So we encourage the tradition of relations coming to help out because it helps to reduce the stress experienced by nursing mothers,” she said.

Ewurum also warned against the practice of putting breast milk in a child’s eyes as cure for eye problem, describing it as harmful. She advised mothers to take their babies to health facilities for appropriate medication in the case of any eye infection. “That practice is very wrong and should be discouraged,” said Ewurum, who is the President of Medical Women Association of Nigeria, Abia chapter.

Travel / Wondrous World! USA Town With No Sunrise For 66 Days by prof2007: 1:00am On Nov 28, 2020
Residents of Utqiagvik in Alaska have watched their last sunset of this year and will not see one until January next year. Some 4,300 residents of America’s northernmost town Utqiagvik formerly known as Barrow watched their last sunset at 1:30pm (PT) on Wednesday, November 19, 2020, and will witness the next sunrise only after 66 days.

Utqiagvik is located at a latitude of 71.29 Degrees North, which is slightly above the Arctic circle. Because of its unique geolocation the area witnesses the long Polar Night period. According to TimeanDate.com website, this phenomenon only occurs within the polar circles and Polar Nights are the result of Earth tilting away from the Sun during winters and when none of the Sun’s disc is visible above the horizon at all.

Hopefully, by then president-elect Joe Biden will be sworn in as the 46th President of the US and they may even have the Covid-19 vaccine available by then. However, for residents of this town, the Polar Night is an annual occurrence and is quite normal to them. The National Weather Service in Fairbanks posted on Twitter saying that the sun will not rise again until January 23, 2021, in Utqiagvik.

Carson Frank, an associate at the University of Alaska Museum of the North in a phone interview with USA Today said Alaskans have already begun preparations and stocked up on Vitamin D supplements. They also rely on ‘happy light’ which stimulates daylight indoors.

Music/Radio / The Experience Concert Goes Virtual First Time In 15 Years by prof2007: 10:48pm On Nov 27, 2020
The 2020 edition of The Experience, an all-night gospel concert, will hold strictly online, says the organisers of the programme which has become a favourite annual event for gospel music lovers. Now in its 15th year, the annual event hosted by the Senior Pastor of House On The Rock, Paul Adefarasin, showcases multi-talented and dynamic gospel artistes from different parts of the world.

The past 14 editions were held at the Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos and each gathering averaged an attendance of over 500,000 people, making it arguably the largest gospel concert in the world. But the organisers of the programme announced this week that the event will not hold at the expansive space in the Tafawa Balewa Square, a decision taken to maintain physical distancing amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“The Experience 15 (Global Edition), is scheduled to hold on Friday, 11th December, 2020 virtually, livestreamed around the world, serving as a platform to unify the global Church and establish God’s Kingdom here on earth,” the organisers wrote on the event website.

“Yes, we had the last 14 editions together mainly in one place, yet now we are not apart, we are still in this together as we go global with the #TE15G. There are no barriers and nothing can stop us, our God deserves our praise all the way, and He will have it,” @TheExperienceLG tweeted.

This year’s concert will showcase artistic musical performances, goodwill messages and intercessory prayers by internationally recognised artistes including Don Moen, Tope Alabi, William MCDowell, Tasha Cobbs, amongst others.

Crime / Police Station Burnt As Warders, Okada Riders Clash In Ibadan by prof2007: 3:15am On Nov 25, 2020
There was pandemonium at Agodi Gate area of Ibadan, Oyo State, on Tuesday, following a clash between some motorcyclists and warders at the Agodi Correctional Centre. The clash led to burning of the Idi Ogungun Police Outstation by some angry youths, while another police station opposite the centre was reportedly damaged.

Our correspondent gathered that a motorcyclist was shot by one of the warders, but some eyewitnesses claimed a teargas canister, which the warder held, exploded and injured the motorcyclist in the face. Some of the traders, who have shops in the area, told our correspondent that the victim was shot by the prison officials following his refusal to pay a bribe of N50.

One of the traders, Dauda Abegunrin, told our correspondent that prison warders always extort okada riders, who usually park close to the facility to pick passengers. The alleged shooting of the motorcyclist was said to have angered his colleagues and youths in the area, who made bonfires on the road, which made motorists to avoid the area. This reportedly caused pandemonium as commuters, motorists and passers-by ran helter-skelter.

Abegunrin said, “One of the warders demanded N50 from an okada rider, but that one said he could not give a bribe because he was a Muslim. The warder later dragged him inside and shot him. This led to a crisis in the area.” Another trader in the area claimed the refusal of the okada rider to give the warder the N50 bribe caused the clash. It was not clear if the motorcyclist died or was just injured, but some people said he had been taken to hospital.

Policemen and operatives of the Operation Burst, comprising soldiers and other security agents, were deployed in the area to restore normalcy following the violence.Efforts to speak to the Public Relations Officer of the correctional centre, Lanre Anjonrin, were unsuccessful as he did not answer calls placed to his telephone and had yet to reply messages sent to him on the issue.

However, the Police PRO in the state, Mr Olugbenga Fadeyi, said policemen and other security agents were deployed in the area to prevent hoodlums from seizing the opportunity of the clash to attack the prison. He confirmed that one police station in the area was burnt, while another was damaged.

The PPRO stated, “Contrary to the currently trending news online that policemen fired shots, leading to injury at the Agodi Gate area this morning, the truth is that there was a clash between officers of the correctional service and okada riders stationed at Agodi Gate. Upon the receipt of this information, policemen as well as other security agents moved to the scene to ensure that there was no breakdown of law and order that could lead to coordinated attacks on the prison facility.

“The Idi Ogungun Police Outstation was burnt, while the Agodi 2 Station opposite the correctional centre was damaged.”

Crime / Edo Grapples With Cultists’ Reign Of Terror After #EndSARS Protests by prof2007: 8:46am On Nov 24, 2020
When the #EndSARS protest was on October 17 hijacked by hoodlums, who unleashed terror on Edo State, especially the capital, Benin, no one knew the dimension and magnitude the violence would take considering that the police, who were expected to provide security, were at the receiving end of the biggest protest against the institution. However, residents had hoped the violence would subside, giving police the chance to resume their duty of restoring peace and order in a state that has been thrown into great turmoil.

However, a month after, the state is still in great security distress with armed robbery, kidnapping and cult-related killings, which have turned major parts of the state capital into a ghost town, becoming the order of the day. Residents are scared to go out at all or leave home early for their places of work or business, while also opting to stay in other parts of the city whenever they stay out late.

Many have attributed the rising clashes among rival cult groups, especially Eye and Aiye confraternities, more to the jailbreak that occurred at two correctional centres in Oko and Sapele Road, Benin, where almost 2,000 prisoners were freed by hoodlums, who coordinated the attacks on the centres to free their gang members, who were being held in the facilities.

With the streets already boiling and arms stolen from police stations in the hands of criminals, it was only a matter of time before dissidents hiding under the confraternities would unleash mayhem and take over the streets of Benin. And when it started, it became a case of knowing when a war starts and not knowing when it would end. Many rival cult members and innocent citizens have been killed, with the numbers rising daily as over 40 people are alleged to have been killed in the last two weeks, with pictures and graphic videos surfacing on the Internet.

A resident of Uselu, where the ‘battle for supremacy’ between the cult groups shifted to last Friday, Rose Osaro, was surprised by the sophistication and brutality with which the gangs operated. She was also bewildered by the way they handled guns and other sophisticated weapons, wondering where they got their training from.

She told The PUNCH, “I am surprised by the way they operated. They were so brutal and were ready to kill anyone in sight. We had to run for our dear lives and I must advise that you (the reporter) don’t stay too long out here. These guys are dangerous and we can only call on the security operatives to swing into action and save Benin from descending into more chaos. Many people have been killed, while some have been maimed.

“I believe most of the problems began when prisoners were illegally freed by their cult members. There had been cult clashes in Benin before, but this one dwarfs any other and I hope that something will be done soon. If not, many people will be killed. I also feel that if the government had handled the #EndSARS protest well, it would not have been hijacked by hoodlums, who are now terrorising the state.”

However, before the battle shifted to Uselu, some parts of the city are reputed for criminal activities including, Upper Sakponba, Evbuotubu, Siluko Road, Ukhoro, Medical Store Road and parts of Sapele Road. In these places, rival gangs engaged themselves in open battles with guns and machetes, which also claimed innocent lives.

Gabriel Ogiebor, who lives in Sakponba, told The PUNCH that a neighbour’s son was killed while running errands for his father. He said he got home and saw many people condoling with the family over the demise of their son, adding that the late Churchill was an easy-going person.

“I was shocked to hear the sad news. I gathered that his father sent him on an errand and he was caught in the crossfire. He was not a cultist. He was an easy-going guy and it is unfortunate miscreants sent him to his early grave. I feel so sad because I viewed Churchill as a prospect, having finished in one of the tertiary institutions in the state. As it is now, I can say that 38 people may have been killed in these senseless confrontations,” Ogiebor added.

However, efforts to end the cult wars and other criminal activities may have taken a dent as some of the escapee prison inmates are already sending threat messages to policemen who investigated and prosecuted their cases. Commissioner of Police in the state, Johnson Kokumo, who revealed this, said his men were working within existing limitations to restore normalcy to the state just as he said 3 policemen shot by hoodlums were recuperating.

He said, “You can imagine what it means that 3 police stations along Sokponba Road were destroyed and burnt and patrol vehicles destroyed in several other parts of the state capital; all the officers in these stations now operate from the headquarters.

“The #EndSARS protest was hijacked by hoodlums and it took a violent turn in the state and prisoners were set free; what do you expect? Some of these escapees have been sending threat messages to policemen, who investigated and prosecuted them, while one of the escapees, who was convicted for murder, went on that same day to kill the prosecution witness in his village, but he was immediately rearrested.

“Everybody must be part of the restoration of sanity. People who know these escapees should avail us information about them. But I am assuring you that we are not sleeping, but with what has happened to the police in Edo, some of these hitches are expected. But we are not sleeping and we will continue to work to arrest criminal elements in the state.”

Last Friday, the army, the police with other sister agencies engaged in a show of force by taking over strategic positions in the state to stem security problems, especially the rising cases of cult clashes and killings.

General Officer Commanding 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Maj. Gen. Anthony Omozoje, said he was in the state to collaborate with sister security agencies to see how to consolidate on gains being made in curbing the rate of criminality witnessed after the #EndSARS protests. He said the military was embarking on a 7-day heightened security operation to fish out criminal elements in the state, adding, “We need to go actively after these criminals in order not to give them liberty to operate. The 7-day heightened security operation will involve all security agencies to arrest criminals and recover arms and ammunition.

“The operation has been carried out in Osun, Kwara, Oyo, Ekiti and now Edo. We will establish fixed checkpoints at very critical locations within the city. After the operation, an evaluation will be carried out to know the level of success. We have men in Ibadan and Akure, who will reinforce our effort if need be.”

Despite facing several battles on the political front, Governor Godwin Obaseki is optimistic that the state government’s effort will yield dividends soon. He stated that the government was playing its part to prevent the state from being thrown into anarchy through activities of cultists and other criminals in the state.

“We have a subsisting curfew in Edo, which is being breached. To support your 7-day heightened security effort, we are reinforcing the curfew from 10pm to 6am daily. The town should be on lockdown and anyone found outside within this period should be dealt with according to the law,” Obaseki told the GOC. The governor lamented that during the #EndSARS protest, Edo was a hotspot as hoodlums took advantage of the heightened anxiety surrounding the September 19 governorship election to cause mayhem.

Obaseki, who thanked the Chief of Army Staff and other senior security officers for refusing to be compromised and ensured that Edo had a free, fair and credible election, said their actions had saved and sustained democracy in the state and Nigeria.

A former Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, said failure to punish past misdeeds had given rise to the present insecurity in the state, noting that the government must work with professional bodies and faith-based organisations as well as understand the need to make community policing organic.

He stated, “In 2015, when a similar problem of gang war and criminality took place and I was the IG, we moved into the state to sanitise it and arrested 15 persons, who were the top actors. It took us 3 weeks to mop up. We halted the state of social disorder and anomie, and then the case files were compiled and the suspects were arraigned.

“Unfortunately, the government did not go ahead with the prosecution and there must be consequences for crime. So, what is happening now is because there were no consequences for past misdeeds. We didn’t go for the foot soldiers, we went for the big shots, who were the organisers.

“Two years ago, I drew attention to it but nothing was done. Predictive policing shows that if you don’t prosecute people who have committed infractions, you are tacitly encouraging a repeat performance and see what has happened. The same people came out on the street now and took over the state. So, government should learn to ensure that people who commit crimes, despite their political leanings or standing in society, are dealt with. That is the only panacea for having peace in Edo State.

Arase added, “I don’t see a strategic approach the government has put in place to stop the criminals. If you say you are training constables for community policing, I must say that is a pedestrian way of dealing with security and policing issues. What is the profile of those you are training and giving uniforms to?

“We have to think outside the box and be strategic. People from the state, including me, are tired of all these. I am particularly worried about what is happening and our approach must change on how we fight crime. Though it is the Federal Government that controls the police, States must complement by providing patrol vehicles and other equipment to aid the police in doing their jobs.”

A former Provost Marshal of the Nigerian Army, Brig. Gen. Idada Ikponmwen (retd), said security operatives must be provided with needed tools to secure lives and property, while also calling on residents of the state to give vital tips that would help operatives arrest and rid the state of criminal elements.

He stated, “I can say that insecurity as well as the killings baffle me and other well-meaning people. It also baffles me that we cannot use our security apparatus to deal with these problems. All I will want to emphasize is that government must rededicate itself to providing proper security for everybody. It is the primary responsibility of government to provide security. The security situation has never been this bad and it leaves us all in constant state of fear on the roads, in our houses and everywhere.

“So, the government must rededicate itself to repositioning the security system. The people must also see themselves as partners, because security is everybody’s business and the people committing these crimes are not spirits, they live in different communities with the people and a situation where the people are not sufficiently committed, it will be difficult for security to be adequate.”

Nairaland / General / Missing Person: Have You Seen This Woman? by prof2007: 7:12am On Nov 24, 2020
The woman in the attached photo, Bolarinwa Alice Falade, went missing last week, just a few days to her 50th birthday. She lives with her son, Adetayo, in Owode-Ibeshe area of Ikorodu, Lagos State, and had taken a stroll on November 17 but did not return home. Adetayo, who spoke to PUNCH correspondent, said he became apprehensive when his mother did not return home and her phone was switched off.

“She’s always the only one at home whenever I go to work; so, when I got home from work Tuesday, I noticed she was not at home, but normally if she wants to go out, she would call me to tell me where she would put the key. When I got home that day, I discovered the door was locked, checked where she used to put the key and discovered it was there, so I entered the apartment and relaxed.

“After a while, I tried calling her phone around 6pm, it rang and nobody picked till it was switched off. I became worried because she does not stay long outside because of her ailment; I went to her friend’s place where she normally goes, but was told the woman travelled 2 weeks earlier and it had been a while since my mum went there. I asked people around and they confirmed the woman was not around.

“I waited till around 8pm before I called her siblings to know if she was with them, but they said she was not and since then, we have not seen her. Her disappearance has affected me because she’s the only one I have and I’m the only one staying with her at the moment. She was supposed to celebrate her 50th birthday on November 29.” Adetayo added that he reported the matter at the Ipakodo Police Station.

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed the disappearance said, “The matter was reported at Ipakodo Police Station, but the son was advised to go and find out about her whereabouts from their relations and come back to the station after 24 hours if she was still missing, but he never came back. Let the family go back to the station so that a proper record will be taken and the police will know the next step to take.”

PS: If you have any useful info on the woman's whereabouts, please call Telephone No. 07017235360.

Crime / CCB To Prosecute Ibrahin Magu Over Dormant Account, Port Harcourt Property by prof2007: 1:01am On Nov 24, 2020
The Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) will arraign Ibrahim Magu, suspended acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CTC) any moment from now, TheCable understands.

According to sources in the know, Magu is to be prosecuted for allegedly failing to list a bank account in his asset declaration form. TheCable understands that the First Bank account had not been operated by Magu for 5 years and gone dormant.

The CCB has also listed a property in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, allegedly owned by Magu as part of the evidence to be used against him at the tribunal. Magu had previously been accused of owning properties in Dubai, Lagos and Abuja — but it now appears there is no substance to the allegations. His team has maintained that he owns only one house and it is in Karu, a suburb in the federal capital territory (FCT).

“We thought they said he owned houses in Dubai and Banana Island but now it is a phantom property in Port Harcourt that is being linked to him,” a member of his team told TheCable.

Magu, who was named acting chairman of the EFCC in 2015 and was never confirmed until his suspension in July 2020, had been invited by the CCB to answer questions on his asset declaration. This came at the time he was also being investigated by the Justice Ayo Salami panel, which has now recommended his sack and prosecution for alleged corruption in office — an allegation Magu has consistently denied. Magu failed to appear before the CCB, citing his lack of access to the documents being requested.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Wahab Shittu, counsel to Magu, denied that the suspended chairman shunned the bureau. Below is the full text of his statement.

Our attention has been drawn to certain media reports where it was reported that our client, the suspended Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr Ibrahim Magu, shunned the invitation of the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB).

We wish to state that our client did not shun the CCC invitation as the media reportage did not reflect the true position of the narrative. We wish to state with high sense of responsibility that we have written 2 letters to the Chairman of the CBB, intimating him about the inability of our client to have access to the relevant documents as required by the CCB.

The letters, which were dated November 16 and 17, 2020, were addressed to the CCB Chairman. The letters were titled- Re: Investigation of Activities- Letter of Invitation, Breach of Code of Conduct for Public Officers. Please note that the letters were stamped and acknowledged by the office of the CCB Chairman on the said date of November 17, 2020. We also wish to state the said letters were copied to the Director of Intelligence, Investigation and Monitoring while the letters were also stamped and acknowledged by his office.

Explaining the inability of our client to honour the invitation, we stated as follows:

“Your letter dated November 2, 2020 with reference No.-CCB/HQ/II & M/007/2093 addressed to our client has been passed unto us to respond to as follows:

“In the referred letter, our client was requested to appear before your distinguished body on Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at 11am prompt concerning the above subject matter. We have firm instructions to inform your distinguished body that our client, regrettably will not be able to honour today’s invitation in view of certain circumstances beyond his control.

“Our client’s inability to honour your invitation is as a result of his inability to access his office and the requested documents since his suspension from office. We wish to inform you that the documents which you requested for and other personal documents are still in his personal office where he has been denied access up to date. The relevant documents include:

1. Acknowledgement slips of all Magu’s assets declaration to the Code of Conduct since he joined Public service.
2. Copies of his Appointment Letter, Acceptance, Records of Service and payslips from January to May, 2020.
3. All title documents of his landed properties both developed and undeveloped.

“We request that the invitation to our client be extended pending the conclusion of the exercise of the mandate of the presidential Judicial Commission of Inquiry set up against our client and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). This request has become necessary since most of the documents requested by your Bureau, were removed from our client’s offices by the Department of State Security Service (DSS) and the request of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry in the absence of our client while our client was in detention.

"Based on the foregoing, it would be impossible for our client to answer your questions and provide those documents which are in the possession of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry and the Department of State Security Service (DSS). We therefore kindly request your distinguished body to graciously extend the invitation extended to our client pending the return of our client’s documents (which you requested).

“We further wish to inform you that we are writing a letter to the Judicial Commission of Inquiry, requesting it to direct the Acting EFCC boss to allow our client access to the relevant documents. Please note that there is the need for our client to have access to the relevant documents in order to prepare for his defence to your invitation.

“In the circumstances, until such a time when our client gains access to his personal files in his office where most of the requested documents are, it is impracticable to honour your invitation, even if our client is willing to do so as an obedient and patriotic citizen.

"Thank you in anticipation of your cooperation in the above regard. Please accept our professional regards."

Yours Faithfully,

Signed

Business / US, UK, South Africa, Nigeria - Here Are 40 Countries Experiencing Recesion by prof2007: 9:38pm On Nov 23, 2020
If the world were to play a game, and the convener says “raise up your hand if your country has been in a recession in 2020,” more than half the hands in the world will be up. The other half with their hands down will be led by China — a country with nearly 20% of the world’s population. Of the top 10 most populous countries, only Bangladesh and China are likely to avoid a recession in 2020.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation captured it well when it said in its 2020 Goalkeepers report that “the COVID-19 financial loss is twice as great as the ‘Great Recession’ of 2008. The last time these many countries were in recession at once was in 1870, literally two lifetimes ago”.

When this report was released in September 2020, Nigeria was yet to officially enter into a recession, but the signs were there, and very clear, that the rest of the world already projected one. On Saturday, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) officially announced the GDP numbers. The question then is what countries have slid into recessions in 2020, and what countries are strong — or protected — enough to stave off a recession?

According to S&P, of the 34 economies in the world with GDP more than $200bn, only 3 did not report a recession: China, Chile, and Sweden. Chile and Sweden were on the brink of recession, but China has been growing — despite the pandemic. Chile has a history of staving off recessions; it was one of the countries that beat the 2008 global economic crisis, expanding by over 3%. But the country’s central bank has said it will go into a recession in 2020.

Many other countries are said to be experiencing a recession — but have not yet called one because the data has not been completely collated.

Politics / Rising Petrol Price: Stakeholders Demand Full Deregulation by prof2007: 8:20am On Nov 23, 2020
Resurgent calls for full and transparent deregulation of the downstream oil and gas sector have greeted the recent increase of about 5% from N160/litre to N168/litre in the retail prices of petrol.

In a statement on Sunday, some stakeholders in the downstream value chain of the oil and gas sector insisted that deregulation remained the most appropriate and sustainable direction available to the nation as global price of crude oil continues to reel under the pressure of the global COVID-19 pandemic. They said analysis of the sector showed that with current pump price of petrol at N168/litre, the cost of sales, which represents the direct cost attributable to bringing petrol to the point of sales, was estimated at about N161.81/litre.

“This represents 96.32% of total cost to marketing and distribution companies, implying that such companies based on the pricing template only have a thin margin of about 3.68% to cover running costs and make additional investments in infrastructure development,” they said.

Speaking on deregulation of the sector, Chairman, Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria, Mrs Winifred Akpani, said the organisation welcomed recent developments around the subject but believed now was the time for the sector to embrace full deregulation. “As deregulation opens up the market for new opportunities, we will begin to witness unprecedented push in the sector towards promoting global standards in the supply chain management thereby creating a system that gives the buying public added value for money.”

Energy expert and Director, National Oilwell Varco, Dr Babajide Agunbiade, said Nigeria might never harness the full development potential of its oil and gas sector with the continued inefficiencies within the value chain.

Crime / Task Force Team Leader & Members Detained Over N100k Bribe by prof2007: 6:33am On Nov 23, 2020
The Lagos State Task Force on Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit said it arrested one DSP Popoola Kayode and his team members for allegedly extorting N100,000 from a traffic offender.

Sunday PUNCH had reported how a resident, Didi Ekanem, accused the state task force of extortion and harassment. Ekanem said Kayode, after making sexual advances at her, demanded money; she said she transferred N100,000 into his account after negotiations.

The task force, in a statement signed by Head of the Public Affairs Unit, Adebayo Taofiq, on Sunday, said Kayode and his team members had been arrested and transferred to Lagos State Police Command for disciplinary actions.

The statement read in part, “Sequel to the report, the Chairman of the agency, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi, immediately investigated the matter and discovered that the vehicle (Venza APP 775 GJ) was impounded for driving against traffic around the Lekki-Ajah Expressway by the enforcement team of the agency on Wednesday, November 18, 2020.

“The investigation revealed further that the vehicle was brought to the agency’s car park at Alausa, Ikeja. The leader of the team, DSP Popoola Kayode, who is not the commander of the agency as quoted inside the report, collected the sum of N100,000 via a bank transfer in his account before he released the vehicle to the owner (Didi Ekanem). The leader of the team and his members have been arrested and queried by the chairman, while they would be sent back to the Lagos police command for further disciplinary actions.”

Egbeyemi, however, warned residents to desist from driving against traffic and report any officers involved in shady deals.

Business / Refineries Gulped N81.41bn, Refined Zero Crude In 8 Months – NNPC by prof2007: 6:03am On Nov 23, 2020
Total of N81.41bn was expended on Nigeria’s refineries between January and August this year but they refined no drop of crude oil all through this period, latest data obtained from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation showed.

Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company, Port Harcourt Refining Company and Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company posted a cumulative revenue of N6.54bn during the 8-month period. With revenue of N6.54bn and total expenses of N81.41bn, the refineries ended up with a deficit of N78.87bn, according to figures contained in the just-released August 2020 report of the NNPC.

Further analysis of figures from the latest report, as well as those earlier released by the corporation, showed that revenue, expense and deficit of KRPC during the period were N6.22bn, N33.61bn and N27.39bn respectively. PHRC posted revenue, expense and deficit of N61m, N25.57bn and N25.51bn respectively. WRPC earned revenue of N257m, incurred expense of N22.23bn and posted deficit of N21.98bn during the 8 months.

It was further gathered that for 13 straight months, the facilities had been running without refining any volume of crude oil. Data from the consolidated refineries operations put volume of crude processed from August 2019 to August 2020 at zero metric tonnes. With cumulative plant capacity of 445,000 barrels per day, they posted capacity utilisation of 0% all through the 13 months. However, volume of crude they recorded as closing stock between August 2019 and August this year was 3.78 million metric tonnes.

For several years, Nigeria has been importing the bulk of its refined petroleum products as a result of the inability of its refineries to refine crude oil produced within the country. On Thursday, the FG revealed that Nigeria, Africa’s biggest oil producer, was set to resume importation of petroleum products from a neighbouring country, Niger Republic.

The Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources said in a statement that the two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding for petroleum products transportation and storage. It said following bilateral agreements between the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), and his Nigerien counterpart, Mahamadou Issoufou, talks had been ongoing between the two countries for over 4 months – through the NNPC and Niger’s Societe Nigerienne De Petrole.

According to the statement, Niger Republic’s Soraz Refinery in Zinder, some 260km from the Nigerian border, had an installed refining capacity of 20,000 barrels per day. “Niger’s total domestic requirement is about 5,000bpd, thus leaving a huge surplus of about 15,000bpd, mostly for export,” it said.

NNPC again explained in its latest monthly report that declining operational performance of Nigeria’s refineries was attributable to ongoing revamping of the facilities. It said the revamping of the facilities was expected to further enhance capacity utilisation once completed. Operators in the downstream oil sector as well as economists have repeatedly called for a fast revamp of Nigeria’s refineries in order to halt the continued importation of refined petroleum products.

National President, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Chinedu Okonkwo, said, “Getting our refineries working optimally is so vital now to save us the continued depletion of our foreign exchange. I know NNPC is working towards that and we hope the refineries will come onboard as soon as possible, because this might also help in reducing the cost of refined petroleum products.”

Director-General, Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dr Muda Yusuf, noted that pronouncements by NNPC on future involvement of the private sector in the operation of the country’s moribund refineries were commendable. “This is another laudable initiative which will ensure that these national assets are put to use for the growth and development of our economy,” he said.

He, however, noted that one of the critical elements of the oil and gas sector reform, particularly the downstream sector, was the complete deregulation of the sector. The LCCI boss explained that reform of the downstream oil and gas sector would not only impact positively on local refining of crude but also create a number of advantages for the economy.

Yusuf said, “It will unlock the huge private investment potential in the downstream oil sector, especially in petroleum product refining. This will ultimately reduce importation of petroleum products and ease pressure on the forex market as well as the burden on our foreign reserves.”

He stressed that the investment opportunities in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector were huge, considering the country’s crude oil reserves and the even bigger prospects in respect of its gas reserves. According to him, Nigeria has been in the business of oil for over 50 years, but still does not have any private refinery operating on a commercial scale.

“This is a big issue. No oil-producing country imports refined petroleum products on a scale that we do in Nigeria. It is inexcusable,” the LCCI DG stated. He added, “Pipelines are very critical infrastructure for refineries and for the sector, but the current ones are aging and have deteriorated due to poor investment and maintenance. Again, this is because the pipelines are in public sector space. The story of the petrochemicals and fertiliser plants are not different, although the latter has witnessed some measure of privatisation.”

Yusuf noted that the dominance of the public sector in this space had significantly slowed down progress and development of the oil and gas sector. He said the sector was so strategic it could easily have provided the lever to accelerate diversification of the Nigerian economy.

Crime / Bandits Demand N100m For 6 ASPs In Katsina Kidnappers’ Den by prof2007: 9:18am On Nov 19, 2020
Bandits holding 6 Assistant Superintendents of Police captive in Katsina State for over one week are demanding N100m ransom for their release. PUNCH gathered that the ASPs were among 9 who were just promoted to their current rank. They were attached to the Mobile Police Squadron 6, Maiduguri, Borno State.

Findings on Wednesday indicated they were demobilised from the riot unit and 8 of them were on their way to Zamfara State Police Command on transfer when they were ambushed in Dogondaji area of Katsina State and taken into the forest. A reliable police source explained that the 9 ASPs were planning to go to Zamfara State together but one of them changed his mind at the last minute while the others embarked on the trip in a commercial bus.

On getting to Kano, the driver was said to have asked them to join another vehicle as his bus had developed a fault. The source said, “When they were released to go to Zamfara, they scheduled a day for the trip from Maiduguri, but one of them said he wasn’t comfortable with the trip and declined to join them. He said he had something to do and promised to join them in Zamfara later.

“So, the 8 others left, but on getting to Kano, the driver said he couldn’t continue the journey to Zamfara, because his vehicle had developed a fault. They joined another vehicle and on their way around Dongodaji in Katsina State, the bandits accosted and kidnapped them. While being taken away, 2 of them escaped and one was shot in the leg though he didn’t die. He found himself at a village and the villagers took him to a police station and he was taken to a hospital. The other 6 officers are still with the bandits who are demanding N100m ransom.”

A senior police officer said the Commander, Mopol 6, could not account for the men when asked about their abduction, adding that he referred inquiries on the missing men to the Zamfara State Police Command. The officer explained that the normal procedure was for the commander to send a signal to the Zamfara command informing it that he had released the 9 ASPs, but he allegedly failed to follow the official procedure.

The source stated, “The problem came from the Commander, Mopol 6, their former squadron leader, who released them on transfer to Zamfara. He was supposed to relay the information on the kidnap incident, but he said he didn’t know about it when he was asked; instead, he referred inquiries to the Zamfara State Police Command. The commander should have sent a signal that the men had been released to go to Zamfara, but he didn’t do that. Normally, the Zamfara command would send a signal to Borno confirming the men had resumed.”

Findings indicated that families of the missing police officers were anxious about the safety of their breadwinners following the N100m ransom demanded by the bandits. It was learnt the families were attempting to raise N3m for the release of the captives or N500,000 each. Force spokesman, DCP Frank Mba, had yet to respond to inquiries on the incident as he did not respond to calls and SMS sent to his mobile telephone as of time of filing this report.

When contacted by one of our correspondents, one of the officers who escaped from the abductors, said he was too weak to recount the incident. “I have high BP (blood pressure); I just came back from a check-up. I cannot remember everything now. The incident happened on Sunday along Katsina-Gusau Road,” he simply said.

PRO Borno State Police Command, DSP Edet Okon, said there was no reported case of policemen from the command being abducted, adding that the alleged victims were no longer serving at the command because they had been transferred. “Borno State Police Command has not received any signal in respect of her officers being abducted. The alleged abduction of officers is still unknown to us as we have yet to receive any alert on the matter. That is the official position of the command as of this moment,” Okon stated.

When one of our correspondents visited the Mopol 6 base in Maiduguri, he observed that police personnel were overwhelmed by the kidnap of their colleagues, which came weeks after some of their men were killed and several others injured during an attack on the convoy of the Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum. The mood in the barracks was very sober with little or no activity going on except a few anti-riot policemen in uniform clustered in groups obviously discussing the incident.

It was gathered that some personnel of the command were recently attacked at the Bama LGA of the state and the latest development had dampened the morale of the policemen. PUNCH did not see women and children in the barracks except a few at the market square. Except for the command headquarters, where some cops were sighted sitting under trees and in other strategic locations, the entire barracks, which houses a police training college, state police command and Mopol 6 base, was scanty.

AIR FORCE BOMBS BANDITS’ CAMP, KILLS SCORES
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Air Force, on Tuesday, launched a major offensive against bandits along Abuja-Kaduna Expressway, killing many of them in their camp. The operation followed intelligence reports indicating a cluster of huts and other structures at the location served as hideouts for a notorious bandits’ leader, ‘Major’, and his fighters.

The Defence Headquarters explained that 6 NAF aircraft undertaking 5 missions in a total of 13 sorties carried out a dawn raid on the cluster of huts. This is coming 24 hours after bandits killed 5 persons and kidnapped 10 others on the road.

Eight students of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, were also abducted by bandits. They were among the 300 French Language students travelling to Lagos for a programme at the Nigerian French Language Village. Their abductors reportedly demanded N30m ransom on each of them.

Disclosing the development in a statement titled, ‘Operation Thunder Strike: Land and air components clear bandits’ camp along Abuja-Kaduna Expressway’, on Wednesday, the Coordinator, Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. John Enenche, said the raid cleared the Kuku area of the Kagarko Local Government Area of bandits.

It said, “The first wave of the air component’s air strikes, which involved 6 Nigerian Air Force aircraft undertaking 5 missions in a total of 13 sorties, commenced at dawn and targeted the cluster of huts housing ‘Major.’ The attack aircraft hit some of the target structures and neutralised some of the bandits.

“The second wave of attacks was executed by NAF helicopter gunships, which while continuing to engage the bandits’ location, also provided close air support to the land component as they advanced from Kagarko via Kuku into the bandits’ enclave. This paved the way for ground troops to overrun and destroy the camp without effective resistance from the bandits.”

DHQ further explained that a NAF Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance aircraft provided situational awareness for the troops throughout the operation. The military high command commended the troops for their professionalism and urged them to remain resolute in the conduct of operations against the bandits.

BANDITS AMBUSH, KILL 3 VIGILANTES IN KADUNA
Some bandits reportedly ambushed members of Kaduna State Vigilance Service at Dande village on their way from Damba-Kasaya in Chikun LGA of the state and killed 3 members of the outfit. It was gathered that members of the vigilance service had gone to Dande village on patrol when the incident happened on Tuesday.

Similarly, bandits on Tuesday opened fire on motorists on the access road to the nation’s foremost military university, the Nigerian Defence Academy, in Igabi LGA of Kaduna State. However, troops responded and repelled the bandits, according to the state Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Mr Samuel Aruwan, who made the confirmation in a statement on Wednesday.

The statement titled: ‘Kaduna loses 3 vigilantes, El-Rufai commends troops for neutralising bandits, destroying camps’, identified the slain security personnel as Alison Musa, Dauda Audu and Ishaya Sarki, while Ayuba Tanko and Doza Adamu sustained injuries.

The statement read in part, “The Kaduna State Vigilance Service has informed the Kaduna State Government that the service lost 3 personnel on Tuesday night in the Chikun LGA. According to the service, bandits ambushed the personnel at Dande village on their way from Damba-Kasaya in the Buruku general area.”

Governor Nasir El-Rufai was said to have commiserated with families of the victims and prayed for repose of their souls, while wishing those who sustained injuries speedy recovery, the statement added. According to the statement, the governor also commended land and air troops of the Operation Thunder Strike for a successful operation in the Kuku area, off the Kaduna-Abuja Road.

The statement said, “The governor said he received with gratitude information that the first air strikes hit some of the target structures and neutralised some of the bandits, while the second wave of attacks was executed by Nigerian Air Force helicopter gunships, which provided close air support to troops on the ground as they advanced from Kagarko via Kuku into the bandits’ enclave.

“Similarly, bandits on Tuesday opened fire on motorists close to the Nigerian Defence Academy’s access road in the Igabi LGA. Troops responded and repelled the bandits. Citizens will continue to be informed of the security situation. The government appeals for vigilance and prompt reporting of suspicious movements and activities to security agencies.”

Education / Strike: ASUU Has A Message For Parents, Students & Lecturers by prof2007: 2:38am On Nov 19, 2020
Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has told students and their parents not to expect the lingering strike of its members to end soon. In same vein, the union advised varsity lecturers across the country to seek alternative means of survival, as it has no intention to put the strike on hold anytime soon.

While accusing the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government of not showing commitment in resolving the issues that necessitated the ongoing industrial action, Abuja Zonal Coordinator, ASUU, Prof. Theophilus Lagi, vowed on behalf of the union that the strike will remain a continuum until the government bowed to its demands.

His words: “Today, we wish to let Nigerians, especially our students and parents know that there is no hope in sight to ending or suspending the ASUU strike that has lingered for several months as government is yet to show serious commitment towards addressing our core demands. Our members have been advised to seek other legitimate means of survival as government has not released salaries withheld since February 2020.’’

Newsrand understands that the FG and ASUU have been at loggerheads over usage of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) for lecturers’ salary payments. While ASUU has been insisting that under no account would it adopt IPPIS for its members, government has since been maintaining that it’s either the IPPIS or no salary payments for them, hence the industrial action.

In what seemed to be that the FG wss considering bowing to pressure, about a week ago, it asked ASUU to transit to IPPIS pending when the union’s proposed University Transparency Accountability Solution (UTAS) would be ready for use. Reacting to the proposal, ASUU President, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi said there was no need to transit to IPPIS since UTAS could be ready in at most 3 weeks if the government was sincere.

Health / 5 Reasons Onions Are Essential In Your Diet by prof2007: 2:57am On Nov 18, 2020
Onions among the most cultivated vegetables across the globe. But flooding in the north and upsurge in demand within Nigeria over the past months coupled with biting shortage in production has sent its price skyrocketing - so much so that many have likened the crop to gold.

Salad, jollof rice, tomato stew, yam porridge, beans, name it! There’s just too much we now cook with onions that food lovers don’t mind spending a fortune to have it in their meals — even as prices continue to hit the roof. Beyond culinary obsession with the vegetable, not many consider its health benefits and nutritional value.

Onion is a good source of vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Its vitamin C component helps in general tissue repair. It also functions as an antioxidant, improves iron absorption, and boosts immunity. Onion is a source of the vitamin B complex group like pantothenic acid, pyridoxine, folate, and thiamine which plays an important role in neurosis.

1. THE HEART
Onion contains quercetin and sulphur compounds that protect against heart disease. The anti-inflammatory properties of Quercetin lowers risk of heart disease and high blood pressure. A study in 70 obese people with high BP found that a dose of 162 mg per day quercetin rich onion extracts significantly reduced systolic BP by 3-6 mm Hg.

Studies have also shown intake of quercetin rich onion decreased bad cholesterol and high triglycerides level. In turn, the sulfur compounds in onion act as a natural blood thinner, thereby preventing platelets from clotting.

ANTI-CARCINOGENE
In 2019, a study in the Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Oncology compared 833 people with colorectal cancer with another 833 people who didn’t have it. Researchers found the risk of colorectal cancer was 79% lower in those who regularly consumed allium vegetables such as onions, hence their benefits for the prevention of cancer.

2. SKIN AND HAIR
As a good source of vitamin C, experts say onions support building and maintenance of collagen, which provides structure to skin and hair. In a 2018 study, researchers created an onion shampoo. When tested on the study subjects, they concluded that it nourished their hair follicles, moisturized dry hair, and aided hair growth.

3. BLOOD SUGAR
Multiple studies have shown eating onions may help control blood sugar, which is significant for people with diabetes or prediabetes. One study involving 42 people with type 2 diabetes showed that eating 3.5 ounces (100 grams) of fresh red onion reduced fasting blood sugar levels by about 40 mg/dl after four hours. Specific compounds like quercetin and sulfur components found in the vegetable possess antidiabetic effects.

4.DIGESTIVE HEALTH
Fiber and prebiotics are some components onions offer. Studies have established their role in maintaining optimal gut health. Prebiotics are broken down by gut bacteria to create short-chain fatty acids like acetate, propionate, and butyrate. These can strengthen gut health, boost immunity, reduce inflammation, and also enhance digestion.

Crime / Hoodlums Clash In Mushin & Surulere Lagos: 3 Feared Dead, Shops Looted by prof2007: 1:22am On Nov 17, 2020
Three feared dead, shops looted as hoodlums clash in Lagos

No fewer than 3 persons have been feared dead after hoodlums clashed in some parts of Mushin and Surulere areas of Lagos State. PUNCH Metro learnt the fight, which started around 8pm Sunday between two groups at a party on Alaafia Street, extended to neighbouring streets in the area.

The fight, which extended till Monday, was said to be a supremacy battle between the factions. Among the affected streets were Daniel, Alafia, Morgan, Babalola, Sowunmi and Olusoga. Our correspondent learnt the fight left many injured, while over 200 shops were looted and many vehicles destroyed.

An eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the absence of security agents made the miscreants to have a field day. He said, “The fight started around 8pm yesterday (Sunday) between two groups fighting for supremacy on Alaafia Street and it extended to other streets. The hoodlums destroyed many things during the fight; over 200 shops were looted, while many vehicles were destroyed.

“The police could not quickly come to the scene because of what happened during the #EndSARS protest. The police area commander had to follow the local government chairman, who came to call for calm. But immediately they left, the hoodlums resumed their fight, leaving many people injured.”

It was gathered that policemen from Area D Command, Itire, Aguda and Surulere were mobilised to the areas. State Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said no casualties were recorded in the fight, adding that 12 suspects had been arrested. He said, “No causality was recorded during the fight among some gangsters in the Mushin area of Lagos State. Twelve of them have been arrested, while normalcy has been restored in the area.

“The CP has deployed more police operatives to the area to beef up security. We will continue to monitor the situation.”
