King Goodwill Zwelithini stands by his view that foreigners should go back to their home countries.
        
KING Goodwill Zwelithini meant each and every word when he said foreigners must pack their bags and get out of South Africa.

So said Zwelithini’s spokesman, Prince Thulani Zulu, who told Daily Sun yesterday the king has nothing to be sorry for.

The Zulu king’s outburst came on Saturday during his speech at a moral regeneration event in Pongola, northern KZN.

In the presence of both Police Minister Nathi Nhleko and provincial MEC Willies Mchunu, the king was reported to have told the gathering that it was time foreigners were told to return to their countries.

The king accused them of messing up the country’s towns by hanging their fake clothing brands on the streets.

“Now when you walk down the street you can’t recognise a shop you used to know because it has been taken over by foreigners who mess it up by hanging up rags,” the king said.


His remarks were widely condemned as encouraging hatred towards foreigners, which may result in more violent behaviour towards them.

But Prince Thulani said the king won’t apologise because he stood by what he said.

“I think the people who’re complaining are misinterpreting his speech.

“He didn’t say foreigners must be attacked or harassed.

“The king was talking about foreigners who are here illegally.

“Some are involved in serious crimes like drug and human trafficking.

“We don’t need such people in our country so the king is right,” said Zulu.

The king’s speech has been strongly criticised for fuelling hatred against foreigners by the Somali Association of South Africa and the Congolese Solidarity Campaign.

The provincial government distanced itself from the king’s speech. It said it was guided by the Constitution, which guarantees human rights for all in SA.

Violence against immigrants in South Africa has killed at least
five people since last week in one of the worst outbreak of
violence in years against foreigners in years.
Hundreds of migrants mostly from other African countries had
been forced out of their homes, authorities told the Associated
Press news agency on Tuesday.
Khadija Patel, a South African journalist, told Al Jazeera there
have been previous instances of violence against foreigners.
"Hundreds of foreign nationals were displaced in Isipingo
(20km south of Durban) late last month, when a group of
South Africans attacked foreigners living and working in the
area. The victims of that continue to reside in a makeshift
camp at a sports ground in Isipingo," Patel said.
"The Isipingo attacks was blamed on a labour dispute at a
local wholesaler, and government refused to caegorise the
violence as xenophobic violence," Khadija added.
Hundreds of foreign nationals were displaced in Isipingo late
last month, when a group of South Africans attacked
foreigners living and working in the area. The victims of that
continue to reside in a makeshift camp at a sports ground in
Isipingo,
Most of the recent unrest occurred in and around the coastal
city of Durban, where police said two foreigners and three
South Africans were killed.
The dead included a 14-year-old boy who was allegedly shot
during looting on Monday night and died at a hospital, police
official, Jay Naicker, police spokesperson, said.
About 34 people have been arrested for possession of
unlicensed firearms and other crimes in the last two days, he
said.
"Police are deployed and in high alert in most of the areas
where there are foreign nationals," Naicker said in a statement.
Despite the increased police presence, authorities are hard
pressed to stop unrest that recalls similar violence in South
Africa in 2008 in which about 60 people died.
In January this year, four people died during a week of looting
of foreign-owned shops and other violence in Soweto and
other areas of Johannesburg, stores owned by foreigners in
Johannesburg are closing for fear of the violence spreading.
Zulu king's comments
Some South Africans have accused immigrants of taking jobs
and opportunities away from them.
The latest violence followed reported comments by Zulu King
Goodwill Zwelithini, an influential figure among the Zulu ethnic
group, that foreigners should "pack their bags" and leave.
Zwelithini has since appealed for an end to the unrest, and
says he has been misquoted, but many of those rioting were
heard chanting "the King has spoken," Patel said.
The southern African nation of Malawi plans to repatriate at
least 400 of its citizens following the attacks in South Africa,
said Kondwani Nankhumwa, Malawi's information minister.
Malawi is currently in discussions with South Africa to arrange
temporary travel papers for stranded Malawians because most
lost their passports in the chaos, Nankhumwa said.
"Most of them fled with literally nothing to safe camps,"
Nankhumwa said.
"The numbers will swell since some Malawians are in hiding."
South Africa President Jacob Zuma condemned the violence
and assigned several cabinet ministers to work on the problem
with officials in KwaZulu-Natal province, which includes
Durban.
The government is addressing South African citizens'
"complaints about illegal and undocumented migrants, the
takeover of local shops and other businesses by foreign
nationals as well as perceptions that foreign nationals
perpetrate crime", Zuma's office said in a statement.
Zimbabwean presence
Zuma's statement quoted the president as saying that many
foreign nationals are living legally in South Africa and are
contributing to economic development.
On a visit to South Africa last week, Zimbabwean President
Robert Mugabe thanked South Africa for hosting many
Zimbabweans and said Zimbabwe would work with South
Africa to improve border security.
It is estimated that as many as three million Zimbabweans are
living in South Africa, many as illegal immigrants.
The violence against immigrants is "an expression of a terrible
failure of memory by South Africans" who endured racial
intolerance under apartheid, two South African foundations
said.
The foundations are named after anti-apartheid leader Nelson
Mandela, who died in 2013, and Ahmed Kathrada, another
campaigner against the white racist rule that ended in 1994.
In a statement, the foundations welcomed efforts by Zuma and
other senior leaders to stop the unrest, but said: "For too long,
South Africans in leadership positions have either ignored the
crisis or stoked the fires of hatred."

Many Nigerian students these days often move quickly to queue for private universities when making a choice of institution. I agree that private universities have advantages like the absence of strike, easy access to lecturers… Well, that’s about all.

Public universities, federal and state, have a lot of advantages, from cheaper school fees, to the freedom to be an adult. Public universities expose you to the real world, introduces you to the hustle of life unlike private universities that consist of a lot of brats who are literally spoon-fed. They are so pampered, ​making difficult to face the real world when they become graduates.
So here’s my case for choosing a public university.

1. Public universities allow for freedom and independence:
Students in public universities enjoy the freedom to make decisions for themselves and learn to be almost independent. Private universities keep students within the four walls of their campuses and under certain rules more suited for teenagers than young adults. The laws in public universities are not imposed on the students; they are just the basic principles a normal student is meant to follow. It’s funny when I see pictures of private university students being punished or hear of certain rules like compulsory attendance of chapel, feeding time tables, dress codes, etc.​.​ It is absurd; these are adults​!​
2. Cost of education:
It is a lot cheaper to attend public university than a private one and this is not limited to school fees. Cost of living on public universities is also cheaper. Students cook their own meals and hav​e access to shops on campus and in town where prices of goods and services are competitive. On the other hand, the cost of living on a private university secluded campus for one semester is enough to build a house.
3. Public university g​ives “exposure” to students:
It’s more than obvious that public university students are ​”​sharper​”​ than private university students. Private university students who are often referred to as “JJC” or “Learners” by public university students, live what I term “the microwave life” which is the easy life. In federal universities you get to meet all sorts: from cultists to Aristo chicks, people with different personalities. It makes one exposed to what life really is. One is exposed to the hustle and learns how to struggle for things. There are still brats in federal universities but most of them get to grow up when exposed to the hustle.
4. Life on and off campus is FUN:
There are so many parties to attend, clubs and events. One gets to meet real people, one also learns to be real. There is a lot of gist and gossip, lot of things to laugh at. Rather than chapel, it’s clubbing. Dating is even fun in federal schools. Couples express love without fear as adults. One gets to see students that are rich and poor mingling as equals; students who express themselves through their dressing and not relegated to some uniform.
5. Hard work is compulsory:
Students in public universities have work​ed​ through exceptional odds to succeed; challenges that help one not take life for granted. Imagine a department of over a thousand students with a very small lecture hall or a lecturer who spends only twenty minutes in a class where he is meant to spend two hours, or one who only gives handouts. Faced with issues like these, students work extra hard to come out with well-deserved results.
6. Public universities produce more mature graduates:
With all the challenges: strikes, nonchalant lecturers, freedom to express yourself as adult etc., public universities are more equipped for life after graduation. They know that things would not just be handed to them and are used to making decisions for themselves. -

To all M.A English Language applicants, the result is out. I checked mine today but was told it won't be pasted but the recommended list will be sent to the PG college today. So be expecting emails. The cut off mark is 18 over 50. Your cgpa in ur first degree matters too as that is the requirement for screening as i was told.
