HealthTips For Maintaining Healthy Eyes by pxjosh(op): 8:10pm On Oct 06, 2015
We all know how important the eyes are as instruments of vision to us, and how important we need to take care of them in order to maintain their functions.

Protecting and maintaining healthy eyes as you age is one of the most important things to do to maintain a good quality of life.

You can ensure your eyes are health with the following tips:

- Eat good Food for a Healthy Vision
Maintaining good eyesight actually starts from the food you eat. Certain nutrients such as vitamin C, Vitamin E, omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc, and might help ward off vision problems related with ageing such as macular degeneration and cataracts, studies show. Regularly eating these foods can help guarantee you healthy eyes. This list of foods when consume regularly can help in maintaining health eyes:

. Green, leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, and collards
. Salmon, tuna, and other oily fish
. Eggs, nuts, beans, and other non-meat protein sources
. Oranges and other citrus fruits or juices
It dosen’t end there yet, A well-balanced diet when eaten also helps you maintain a healthy body weight, which makes you less likely to get diseases associated with obesity e.g. type 2 diabetes. Diabetes is known to be the leading cause of blindness in adults.

- Avoid Exposure to Ultraviolet Rays
An excess exposure to ultraviolet rays makes you more likely to get cataracts and macular degeneration.

- Using the right kind of sunglasses will help protect your eyes from the damaging effects of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays.

- You can choose sunglasses that block 99% to 100% of both UVA and UVB rays. If you wear contact lenses, some offer UV protection. It is not a bad idea to wear sunglasses for more protection, though.

- Look away from the Computer Screen
Staring for long hours at your computer or other digital devices can cause major strain on your eyes and can also cause dry eyes, blurry vision, and headaches. To help fight these issues, simply rest your eyes every 20 minutes by looking 20 feet in front of you for 20 seconds.

You can also position your computer so that your eyes are level with the top of the monitor. This allows you to look slightly down at the screen.

- Quit Smoking
Smoking increases the possibility of getting cataracts, optic nerve damage, and macular degeneration. For the sake of healthy eyes, it’s a wise decision to quit smoking. If you currently smoke, try going for a smoking cessation program.

- Go for regular Eye check up
It is quite easy to ignore seeing an eye doctor when you are not having a noticeable change in your vision or when you are seeing well. Regular eye examinations are not just for people experiencing changes in their vision, it is actually important to detect ‘insignificant’ changes in your eye’s health, and can also help check for other health issues such as diabetes and glaucoma before any symptoms come up.

HealthHealth Benefits Of Oranges by pxjosh(op): 1:56pm On Oct 02, 2015
Many know oranges just as a source of vitamin C, but it’s more than that. As one of the well known fruits in the world, an orange carries a wide range of compounds e.g. flavonoids and phytonutrients that are important for maintaining the overall function of the body. These compounds have a wide range of medicinal and healing properties.

Researchers have found that eating oranges is very much a better option to reaping their health benefits than taking nutritional supplements. Also eating whole oranges is a far better source of essential vitamins and minerals compared to taking orange juices because of many nutritional compounds that may be lost in the manufacturing process.

Without wasting much time, I present to you the health benefits of consuming oranges:

#1. Increased Immunity

Oranges as expected has a very rich store of vitamin C which is believed to help in boosting the body’s immune system, and can also help in fighting off sickness and diseases. A regular consumption of oranges is an excellent way to prevent flu and common cold.

#2. High fiber content

Apart from vitamin C, Oranges are also very rich in fibers, which are very important to the digestive system. This fiber content of oranges can also help in cases of constipation, and may also help in weight loss by balancing the metabolism. High fiber content of orange also helps in reducing cholesterol and balance of the blood sugar levels.

#3. High source of Potassium

Oranges are also a good source of potassium, which is important to the functions of the body as it helps in lowering high blood pressure and also maintains a healthy heart. It is also essential for maintaining a good bone density.
#4 Increases Antioxidants

Antioxidants are very important compounds required by the body for overall health function as they serve to mop up free radicals produced by various reactions in the body. In a nutshell, antioxidants help reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease and premature aging and also prevent oxidative stress to the body , fight skin damage caused by the sun and pollution, reduce wrinkles and improve overall skin texture.

#5 Anti-inflammatory action
various studies has shown that oranges may provide anti-inflammatory benefits as it contains a compound called herperidin. Lab studies and animal tests have found that herperidin can reduce inflammation. Chronic inflammation can contribute to cardiovascular disease, cancer, arthritis and many other conditions. Vitamin C is also associated with a reduced risk of inflammatory diseases like asthma, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

#6. Helps Prevent Cancer
Oranges also serves as a rich source of a compound called limonoids, which has been shown to help fight a number of varieties of cancer including that of the skin, lung, breast, stomach and colon.

#7. Improved Health of the Stomach

Studies have found that consumption of oranges may help to treat stomach conditions like irritable bowel syndrome and diarrhea. They are also believed to help fight stomach ulcers and may help to reduce the risk of stomach cancer. Studies have found that daily consumption of oranges can lower the occurrence of H. pylori bacterium and reduce the risk of infections.

Before I end it all, here are few interesting facts about oranges that may need to know:

- Oranges are the largest citrus crop in the world.
- Brazil produces more oranges than any other country.
- Florida produces about 70 percent of the total U.S. crop, and 90 percent of its production goes to make juice.
- In Queen Victoria’s day, oranges were given as Christmas gifts in England.
- The color orange came from the orange fruit?
- Two most common varieties of oranges are Navel and Valencia oranges.
- Orange is the world’s third favorite flavor after chocolate and vanilla.
- Navel Oranges are named after the belly button shape near the bottom!
- About 25 billion oranges are grown each year in America.
- In the 18th Century British sailors took sauerkraut and citrus fruits on the ships to prevent scurvy.
