Politics › Re: Rivers Crisis-NANS Gives FG 14days Ultimatum by Quelme: 4:28pm On Jul 23, 2013
Abagworo: ABUJA – The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), yesterday, threatened to paralyze all economic activities in the nation political capital, if the Federal Government fails to address the current imbroglio in the Rivers State.

NANS, who gave 14 days ultimatum to the government to find lasting solution to the unrest, also berated the Nigeria’s First Lady, Dame Patient Jonathan and the Minister of State for Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike for their roles in the crisis rocking the State.

The Union, who did not exonerate the Presidency from the matter called on President Goodluck Jonathan, to call them to order to stop interfering in the running of the administration of the state.

NANS noted that “it is not acceptable for the 5 legislators in the Rivers State House of Assembly to override the collective will of 27 members. It is totally wrong! We demand that the five legislators, who were responsible for igniting the crisis, be properly sanctioned and trimmed to size”.

A statement signed by the Acting Senate President of NANS, Comrade John Shima, demanded for adequate security in the state House of Assembly, while calling for “the immediate redeployment of the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mbu Joseph Mbu, who from every indication has gone political”.

The union said that, it restrained its self initially to comment on the matter, on the ground that all the parties involved were indigenes of the state, “but after the fracas at the Rivers State House of Assembly on 9th July, 2013 and the fallouts from it, we see the need to expeditiously intervene in the matter, as it has set a very bad precedence for our much cherished democracy and is even capable of plunging the entire nation, not only Rivers State into anarchy.

“In line with the foregoing, we wish to state unequivocally and in the strongest of terms, that the blatant arrogation of legislative powers by a relative minority of five (5) legislators in the Rivers State House of Assembly, against the majority of twenty seven (27) legislators, is in itself a huge aberration and the height of legislative rascality! The action of the five legislators is an open invitation to anarchy.

“Furthermore, Mr. President must stop distancing himself from the matter, because whether he likes it or not, he is vicariously involved in it. The directly involvement of the First Lady in the matter, which she publicly admitted to when sixteen (16) Bishops from the South-South paid her a courtesy visit at the Presidential Villa last week, implies Mr. President’s tacit involvement in it. Therefore, Mr. President cannot continue to feign ignorance or indifference on this very sensitive matter.

“We must bear in mind that the situation in Rivers State depicts a huge threat to the security of the state and by extrapolation, the entire nation. The Executive Governor of Rivers State, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi has since made public, his own feelings of insecurity. There were reports last week of the deployment of policemen to the Rivers State Government House and the Rivers State Liaison Office in Abuja respectively, without the knowledge and approval of the State Governor. That action by the police authorities is highly condemnable.

“Mr. President should not forget that his cardinal responsibility to the state and its citizens is the provision of security for human lives and properties. This includes the lives of state governors and other high-profile individuals. Governor Amaechi has publicly declared that he is not comfortable with the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Mr. Mbu Joseph Mbu. We wonder why the Inspector General of Police is reluctant to redeploy Mr. Mbu from the state. Mbu clearly gave clue in an interview with a national television station that he works at cross-purposes with Governor Amaechi.

“We recall that Amaechi first notified Mbu of the crisis at the Rivers State House of Assembly, long before it degenerated. But rather than take proactive actions in line with the governor’s notice, Mr. Mbu, who was said to be living very close to the Rivers State House of Assembly, deliberately refrained from acting on the governor’s information. The Rivers State Commissioner of Police is answerable to the Inspector General of Police, who is in turn, answerable to Mr. President. Therefore Mr. President’s thumbprint is firmly embedded in the ongoing crisis in Rivers State.

“Therefore we wish to condemn in strong terms, the attack by sponsored miscreants on the convoy of Governor Rotimi Amaechi and the four northern governors that paid him a visit last week. We view the action of those miscreants as dastardly and uncivilized. However, we must remind their sponsors that anyone who rides on the back of a tiger would end up in its belly! If the convoy of governors can be attacked publicly with such impunity, then even the convoy of Mr. President may not be insulated from such attack!

“NANS is of the view that the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike, who is clearly acting the script of the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, should call himself to order immediately! He seeks the reinstatement of the Chairman of Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State, who was earlier sacked by Governor Amaechi.

“Nigeria is operating a federal system, in which every federating unit is expected to operate within the ambits of its constitutional powers.  The issue of Local Governments falls within the purview of the relevant state governments.

“Dame Patience Jonathan and Mr. Nyesom Wike should therefore hands-off the administration of Rivers State and allow Governor Amaechi to perform his constitutional obligations. If they wish to wrestle power from Amaechi, they should do so by the instrumentality of the ballot or other democratic instruments, not to resort to lawlessness in order to make Rivers ungovernable for Amaechi.

“President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan should know that the patience of the average Nigerian is already far-stretched. With the tension in the polity caused by the state of insecurity among other frustrating issues, the nation may well be sitting on a keg of gunpowder! This situation should not be aggravated by allowing lawlessness to permeate the polity. The Rivers State crisis therefore calls for decisive action on the part of Mr. President.

“NANS hereby declares a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government of Nigeria and all its relevant organs, to resolve the crisis in Rivers State. Failure to heed this ultimatum, NANS shall be left with no option than to convene its next Senate Meeting at Port Harcourt, where it shall take a more decisive position and line of action on the Rivers State crisis.
“For the benefit of foresight, the line of action may include taking over the city of Abuja and paralyzing all economic, social and political activities in the nation’s capital. Enough is enough”!

ebor: Be humble and apologise for voting in error instead of justifying the content of what u voted. The fact that the prescribed age for marriage was not specified n within the context of senator Yerima's argument on the issue before voting you should have known better that a trap was set for people like u who only consider d content of a constitional provision without considering the context n wider implication. The question then is why was it that u were d only senator from the south west that voted that way?...the best is to just say sorry 4 voting in error or ignorance.
Well understood Senator. We know those who jump on bandwagon are not the intelligent ones. That Section 29 NEVER mentioned or endorsed child marriage. As long as it serves some emergency activists purpose, they conveniently twisted the whole thing. Stella Damascus even made a video highlighting her misinformation. Many cosmetic activists on twitter, facebook and even here on nairaland needed to get busy, so they picked on Yerima. When they all settle down to digest the bill, I hope the reasonable ones among them will retract and apologize.
He just succeeded in decieving you again. I think that statement of yours should be directed to yerima and his cohort. Nothing has been done to get our lecturers back to the classroom (ASUU strike). They didn't pass the bill to grant local govt autonomy. Graduate are roaming the streets with no sustainable means of livelihood. The Nigerian senators are the highest paid in the world. PIB is still awaiting passage. They make laws to enrich themselves while enslaving the populace. A monthly stipend of #20,000 for undergraduate they wouldn't sign into law yet they sign the live pension bill for themselves. And now they want to turn our girl child to sex slaves. We say no to this barbaric act. Am still wondering how quicky this paedophilic charter was passed into law. Need I say more. Someone should please tell me am not thinking straight.

jelel6: It's obvious that most of the people who
posted here are christians, going by
their level of reasoning! Let me clarify
something here, the supposed
'underage' marriage law is Not thesame
as the islamic viewpoint. Though the Qur'an is silent as to the age for
marriage, But the prophet is reported to
have said that once a child reaches
puberty, he or she is allowed to
marry.BUT THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS
MUST BE FULFILLED; 1. The approval of the parent must be
meet.
2. The girl in question must approve of
the marriage. .
Now tell me, where does it say that you
MUST allow your daughter to marry at a tender age. When you know that she is
not mentally, emotional, physically
ready to make such decisions. Dont
forget the prophet said 'PUBERTY' not
whatever the senate lawmakers
suggests. What this means is that spiritually we dont consider it to be a sin
if you allow or marry after attaining
puberty.
If you more concern with the moral
implication, am happy to clarify also:
the only argument i can recognise here as Genuine is the medical consequences
which may arise if a girl marries at a
tender age. For that, Allah has said in the
quran that he will not place on us a
burden which we can not bear.the
general agreement in shariah is that when a practice becomes a danger to
ones health or life, as proven by a
medical doctor, them that practice
should be avoided.
Any honest person, with reason,
who is not blinded by sentiment and prejudice, will conclude that the senate
did not totally evaluate the situation, its
trend and the dangers which may arise
If the girl is too young. They failed to
carryout their duty as guardians which
is to analyse the situation and determine an age which will be totally free
relatively from girl to girl from any
medical complications. Hence, Neither
prophet muhammed nor the religion
"Islam" should be blamed.
Peace!
Yet another one reasoning from his arse

myopic reasoning! Their mates in the developed world are busy making invention that will help transform the cause of mankind, while our daughters here are been sold out with the backing of the Laws of our land to paedopholic perverts. I wish every girl child can be like Malala who stood up against the dreaded taliban. Expect more paedophiles to troop in enmasse and the starting off of child pornographic industry. Alh. Asari Dokubo in Muslim garb

A prominent Niger Delta Muslim, Alhaji Mujahid Abubakr Dokubo-Asari, has lashed out at critics of the moves by Nigeria’s Senate to approve under-age marriage.

Expressing his opinion on the issue this morning, Dokubo, who converted to Islam as an adult, insisted that it is the right of Muslims to marry or give out their daughters at any age they wish, adding that this is not the business of non-Muslims.

Said the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force (NDPVF) leader through Facebook:
“People should learn to respect other people’s sensibilities… We Muslims have the right to marry when we want or give out our daughters at any age we want. It is not your business and the law must respect our right to do so.

Anything short of that is an infringement on our rights. We did not ask you to marry ladies of that age or give your daughters out in marriage at that age. Plzzzzzzzz respect our sensibilities.”

News Express reports that the Nigerian Senate has come under fire from outraged Nigerians and the international community after being convinced by Senator Ahmad Yarima to drop a constitutional amendment outlawing marriage to girls under 18. The former Zamfara State governor who once came under fire for marrying a girl believed to be aged 13 had argued that Islam recognises under-age marriage.

Issues pertaining to religion usually evoke strong reactions in Nigeria, a deeply religious nation that has Christianity and Islam as the dominant faiths.
Fast Forward===> 10 years later, Nigerian population===> 600 million. Medical report===> 50 million cases of fistula exclusive to Northern Nigeria. Boko Haram members===>50 million. Why always isRam..?
When you talk of leaders, there are many forms as political, religious, family and so on. Its so ridiculous to compare a dog and lion as one of the speaker had said, in Nigeria and africa today, OBJ remains second to non in his wealth of experience and love for his fatherland. The return of Nigeria to democratic nation which tinubu is exploiting now is an handwork of OTA man, many of our delapidated public offices during donkey millitary era were almost restored by his administration. I can rememba befor 1999, teachers, traders, farmers, polices, and other hardworking civil servants were so wretched that many of them cant send their ward to higher institution of learning. In area of corruption, OBJ remains one of the most effective leader to wage war on corrupt govt officials, he initiated agencies like EFCC,ICPC and others to fight political oppositions, today we can see the good fruits of this agencies, James Ibori, Bamikole, Otedola vs lawan, tafa balogun, alamaisegah and the likes all convicted by London court. Nobody in life is Mr. Perfect, obj has loopholes but his goodworks will later be cellebrated by generation unborn. As for Tinubu, i commend his role in oppositioning, he has add beauty to our democracy as strong opposition is d wheel for good and competitive govrnance..however, praising him bcuz he ruled lagos state without federal allowance is good. But does dat means he is free frm corruption? Infact, tinubu shld beta be a garrage leader rather than political, he sponsored many thugery acts and up till now he is their father. Do you knw hw ballots boxes are snatched in lagos? Only if Tinubu can rule Nigeria then u will all learn of his incompetence and lack of good vission.where ur point? #makes no sense jawe#
