THE proposed N30,000 minimum wage seems to have become a campaign issue ahead of next year’s election. To the Presidency, the controversy over President Muhammadu Buhari’s position on what the least paid worker should earn is “concocted”. It accused yesterday some political actors, including the Atiku Media Office, of trying to score cheap political goals, warning that “stiff judgment awaits them at the polls”. Presidential spokesman Femi Adesina was reacting to comments by the Atiku Media Office, which said “President Buhari cannot be trusted to implement the ‘new’ minimum wage of N30, 000’’ recommended by the Pepple tripartite committee”. Atiku, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said: “Buhari may not have the political will to implement the new wage’’. Adesina said: “Those who have latched onto the concocted controversy to play cheap politics, we appeal to them to remember that elections are not won through loquaciousness, and trying to demean the President at every drop of a hat. “But then, it is not surprising, as they have nothing else to sell to Nigerians, if they don’t ride on the name of the President. Stiff judgment awaits them at the polls.’’ The presidential aide frowned at the recurring reports alleging that Buhari had reneged on an earlier acceptance of the N30,000 recommended as the new National Minimum Wage by the National Minimum Wage Tripartite Committee. He noted that these reports were contrary to what transpired on Tuesday when the committee presented its report to the President. Adesina said the President, while acknowledging the concerns raised by government on affordability and labour’s focus on meaningful increase, stated clearly in a speech, which was made available to the media, that: “In a way, both arguments are valid. I want to assure you all that we will immediately put in place the necessary machinery that will close out these open areas. “Our plan is to transmit an Executive Bill to the National Assembly for passage within the shortest possible time. I am fully committed to having a new National Minimum Wage Act in the very near future. “As the Executive Arm commences its review of your submission, we will continue to engage you all in closing any open areas presented in this report. I, therefore, would like to ask for your patience and understanding in the coming weeks.” Adesina observed: “From the above, and throughout the report-submission ceremony, the President never mentioned any figure. What he committed himself to was a new minimum wage, and only after the Report of the committee has been reviewed by the executive and legislative processes of government and an appropriate bill presented to him for assent. Read also: ‘Governors frustrating minimum wage’ “Until the proposed minimum wage has gone through the whole gamut of law-making, President Buhari, who is a stickler for due process, will not be caught in this unnecessary web of controversy, which amounts to putting the cart before the horse and hair-splitting.’’ But an Atiku group insisted yesterday that an Atiku Abubakat presidency would usher in a new beginning for growth. The New Nation with Atiku (NNB) noted that under the present circumstance, the former Vice President stood out as the best chance to take the country to the Promise Land. Briefing reporters yesterday in Abuja, the group’s Director General, Adesina Abolade and National Coordinator, Blessing Braide, said they were prepared to canvass for votes for Atiku once the ban on political campaign is lifted. Braide criticised the economy, saying that is where Atiku comes in. “He is coming to write his name in gold and to touch lives. What he and his predecessor Olusegun Obasanjo were not able to do, he has seen all the lapses and he is the only person among those contesting that has a blueprint and fully ready. “So we have to rally round to support him as he has what it takes. We are ready to mobilise the youth and the old in all parts of the country to vote for the man that is fit for the job,” he said. He also stressed that the group is not a apolitical and does not belong to any political party, “But we are close to what is happening and that is why we have come together to say that we will support the vision of Atiku …” “ If Atiku is looking for power and somebody who is not looking for power might not know how to mange power if you give him power. But this man says that I know how to do it. He has establishment in this country that has employed our youth and if all the wealthy men have done the same, lots of our children would have been employed.” Also yesterday, a firm owned by Atiku said it had approved N33,000 as minimum wage for its employees. Managing Director of Yola –based Gotel Communications, Mohammed El-Yakub, in a statement said: “The N33,000 new salary scale, which takes effect from November 2018, includes domestic servant and all categories of workers on the former vice-president’s payroll,” El-Yakub said. The Minority Leader of the Kano State House of Assembly representing Kura/Garun Malam constituency, Alhaji Abdullahi Muhammad-Chiromawa has defected from Peoples Democratic Party to People’s Redemption Party. The member announced his defection while briefing newsmen in Kano. Muhammad-Ciromawa also said he has resigned his position as the Minority Leader of the assembly. According to him, the decision to defect from PDP to PRP was to join his political Godfather, Alhaji Salihu Sagir-Takai, who had recently dumped the PDP for PRP. “PDP is no longer politically habitable, that is why I’m leaving the party to better my political career and also to avoid being trapped in a political cross-fire,” he said. He explained that his decision was due to the gross impunity and power tussle bedevilling the two major parties in the state. Recall that the former Deputy Governor of state, Prof Hafiz Abubakar who resigned his position and defected to People’s Democratic Party, had also dumped the PDP for PRP. By Clifford Ndujihe LAGOS—TO ensure no registered voter is disenfranchised, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Lagos State will begin the display of names of registered voters in all 8,465 polling units in the state today. The exercise comes up between November 6 and 12, 2018. The commission added that the time for the exercise is between 9:00am and 3:30 pm. ‘’The aim of the display is to allow all registered voters check for the correctness of their details and other information supplied to INEC during registration. Registered voters who have complaints on supplied information are to lodge their complaints with INEC staff at the Registration Area designated Centres located within their area for appropriate attention. ‘’The Commission will also use the occasion to distribute Permanent Voters Cards, PVCs, to those that registered in 2011, 2014 and those that registered during the last Continuous Voter Registration, CVR, exercise from April, 2017 to March, 2018, at the Registration Area Centres (wards). ” The INEC enjoined all Lagosians, who registered between the above mentioned periods to make use of the opportunity to collect their cards. By Dapo Akinrefon & Akinroye Abdulazeez LAGOS—THE Coalition of Progressives Political Parties, CPPP, has said that there is no line of demarcation between it and the Lagos State All progressives Congress, APC, candidate, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and hence its endorsement of his 2019 aspiration. This came as the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Lagos State, yesterday, described the APC governorship candidate, Mr. Sanwo-Olu as a bad market that cannot appeal to Lagosians even if he “buys political parties beyond the registered ones in the country.” Leader of the coalition, Otunba Aderemi Fatukasi, said: “The next 50 years of the state must cut a path to create a framework for leaders that are not only visionary, but also inspirational with a passion for development.” Another chieftain of the coalition, Akinola Obadia, said: “This is historic. It has never happened before in Lagos State. forty five of 58 opposition parties in the state are supporting the APC candidate, Babajide Sanwo-Olu. The coast is clear for him to win next year’s election.” Speaking at the endorsement ceremony, Sanwo-Olu, who was accompanied by his running mate, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat promised to appoint a Senior Special Assistant, SSA, to serve as a link between his government and the parties, if elected as governor. Reacting to the endorsement, the Lagos PDP said the hurried and controversial emergence of the APC candidate is “an indelible political albatross.” In a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Mr Taofik Gani said: “Indeed the emergence is tainted with desperation to have someone as governor who will rather fund the APC leaders. Lagosians will not forget that this is the Lagos APC reason for dropping Governor Akinwumi Ambode. To us, the consequence of the Sanwo-Olu imposition is the terminal acrimony, defections and anti party in the Lagos APC, which we shall duly capitalise on to end the reign of APC in Lagos State.” The PDP further described Sanwoolu as “an emergency candidate that is unprepared for the job compared to the PDP candidate whose blueprint to free Lagos has been since 2006; Hence, laughable that some parties have adopted an unprepared candidate. It is not true that 40 political parties have adopted Sanwo-Olu. The claim is propagandists and mere prodigal as indeed it is the APC candidate who is giving out huge sums of monies to get parties adopt him. Laughable is that he his paying factional leaders of the political parties. “We are not shocked because we know Sanwo-Olu and his nominator are desperate to hold on to Lagos state. Lagosians are, thus, alerted that should Sanwo-Olu be mistakenly elected as governor, his urge will be to recuperate the election expenses. “At the appropriate time, we shall expose Sanwo-Olu as truly not fit and proper to be elected governor of Lagos State.” Source: https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/11/why-opposition-parties-endorsed-sanwo-olu-cpp/ |
