PoliticsRe: No Evidence Yet To Prosecute Lawan – Police by qwest(m): 9:57am On Jul 04, 2012
this gradual release of 'evidence' seem like a ploy to garner public support. if the entrapment was carried out with the full support of the SSS as purported, they should have procured evidence of his culpability and the issue of searching for said 'marked' funds shouldn't have arisen. The lawmaker should have been picked as he had the evidence on him. but what do i know?

this charade is beginning to look like R.Kelly's in the closet (and boy did I get bored with that at some point).

PoliticsRe: FG Sacks NNPC GMD, Others, Names New Boss by qwest(m): 10:03am On Jun 27, 2012
Nigeria and its 'make e be like say' politics. since the country began its democratic adventure it has gone through six GMDs for its floundering behemoth of an oil corp (NNPC). it seems every time one of them is caught out in their unending corruption scandals, the president in power sacks him and replaces him with another of the old guards in the corporation, that is obviously part of the corrupt clique.

it will seem the country is engaged in a case of musical chairs, where the seeming rule is don't get caught. when a GMD is changed no probe is carried out, no audit of any kind. he is just given a slap on the wrist and told: guy you don chop make another person chop. the KPMG report which we paid for has been jettisoned, just like the Halliburton and prior reports that had been generated. so maybe it is just as well that no probe is instituted, since nothing will come of it, just saves the nation some waste.

this present government seems to be reactionary, with no clearly thought out plans for the nation. it just seems to be pandering to the opinions of the Nigerian populace. all the change of batons will avail the country nothing since the persons receiving the batons aren't bringing anything new or revolutionary to the board. same ol' same ol'.
PoliticsRe: GEJ Appoints Col. Sambo Dasuki (RTD) As New National Security Adviser by qwest(m): 11:54am On Jun 23, 2012
Apparently the dismissals is not 'as a result of the men's inability to stem the snowballing violence' or a believe the new appointees will do so. Rather the change is just to try and convince/reassure Nigerians their government is 'doing everything' and is 'on top of the situation'. Haven't we been hearing these buffoons spout these inane cliches for the past year?
PoliticsRe: Brazilian President To Lead Delegation Of Businessmen To Nigeria by qwest(m): 8:57pm On Jun 21, 2012
just spent the last quarter of an hour trolling both the Brazilian news sites and the general web for news of this visit. Seems to be only the Nigerian news sites carrying it, probably gotten through NANS (which probably got it through a source at the presidency). People should stop taking some of the news in the Nigerian press at face value (or else you think the pervasive corruption in the Nigerian system doesn't affect the press).

InvestmentFinancial Reports Of NSE Listed Companies? by qwest(op): 8:21am On Jun 04, 2012
As at 2009 when I did my project, I couldn't get financial reports on companies listed on the Nigerian stock market on the exchange's website, that of the SEC or CSCS. Now I am doing a dissertation for my masters and still can't get any data via that medium. I wonder how individuals planning on, or already investing in the exchange carry out their fundamental analysis. Even basic things like graphs and charts on price movements, earnings, ratios etc are unavailable. So how does the exchange and its regulators and allied institutions communicate basic facts that I'm sure these companies are mandated to submit?

Court Says Falana Lacks Locus Standi To Challenge Jumbo Pay Of Nigerian Legislators

The suit filed by the prominent human rights activist, Mr Femi Falana challenging the powers of federal legislators to award jumbo salaries and allowances to themselves was struck out yesterday by the Federal High Court on the ground that the plaintiff lacks the locus standi to maintain the suit.

The case was filed in August 2010 when there was a national uproar over the decision of the National Assembly members to fix scandalous emoluments for themselves.

In the substantive suit Mr Falana sought a declaratory relief to the effect that the members of the National Assembly are not entitled to receive any payment outside the salaries and allowances determined and fixed for them by the Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Allocation Commission pursuant to Section 70 of the Constitution. In support of the originating summons Mr Falana accused the legislators of usurping the constitutional powers of the RMFAC by taking advantage of passing Appropriation Bills into law to make themselves the highest paid lawmakers in the world. While relying on the case of Fawehinmi V The President (2008)23 WRN 65 Mr Falana urged the court to appreciate that the anachronistic doctrine of locus standi was discarded by the Court of Appeal when it declared illegal and unconstitutional the payment of salaries of two ministers in dollars.

Mr. Falana also submitted that his legal standing to promote good governance has been constitutionally guaranteed.

In opposing the suit the Attorney-General of the Federation and the National Assembly through their counsel, Dr Alex Izion SAN and Miss Grace Ekoh respectively, challenged the locus standi of Mr Falana to question the salaries and allowances of the federal lawmakers. The defendants' lawyers described Mr Falana as a busy body who has not shown that his personal interest has been affected by the jumbo pay of the legislators. They therefore urged the trial court to dismiss the case on the authority of Abraham Adesanya V The President (1981) All NLR pg 1. Both the RMFAC and the Accountants who were joined in the action did not defend the suit.

In his judgment the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Ibrahim Auta held that Mr Falana lacked the locus stAndi to institute the case as he did not prove that he had suffered any greater injury than other Nigerian citizens as a result of the action of the lawmakers. However, in striking out the suit the Judge said Mr Falana ought to have complained to the RMFAC and that if the body failed to act he could then sue to compel it to carry out its duty under the Constitution. In his reaction to the judgment Mr Falana said he would study the judgment and then decide whether to lodge a complaint with the RMAFC on the illegal jumbo pay or challenge the judgment on appeal since the learned Chief Judge of the Federal High Court conceded that it is the constitutional duty of the RMFAC to determine and fix the salaries and allowances of the legislators.

let's be serious, one of the main reason our public/civil service has degenerated to the state it is in is the predilection towards promotion based on seniority and not on performance. Jettisoning merit for the African idea of age bequeathing experience and wisdom, nonsense. If the promoted officials have performed well in their prior posts and are deemed ready to move forward, so be it.

are you guys being mischievous or can't you see that in order to force the deregulation down Nigerians' throat they have to be seen to be buckling their own belts. besides with the securing of oil reserves by the West, a la 'liberation of Libya', the normal hike in price due to demand 4 heating oil for winter might not occur; and the continuing slow down in world economy might herald a reduction in our oil revenue. so be ready for harder times guys ( hate to be the harbinger of doom ). cry cry
