LESS than one week after 58 Nigerians were deported from Dublin, Ireland, 53 others were yesterday deported to the country through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. The deportees were brought into Nigeria aboard an Air Europa aircraft with flight number AEA911, which arrived at 17.40. According to an immigration source, of the 53 deported, 31 were females and 22 were males. While 47 of the deportees ran into trouble by committing immigration offences against Spanish laws, six were deported based on criminal offences. Though some of deportees without criminal cases were allowed to go home by immigration officials at the airport, those with criminal cases are still in custody for further interrogations. The number of Nigerians being deported from across the globe daily has become a source of worry to immigrations officers at the airport, as over 3,000 Nigerians have been deported in the last three months. |
This na d 6th largest exporter of oil in the world o & no kind ride u find go 9ja wey nodey dia but na we get the worst road networks. (oro di hun oro pesije) Menace of trailers on our roads SIR: The state of deplorable roads leading to many accidents in our country is becoming alarming and the increasing number of deaths recorded or otherwise, calls for urgent attention by relevant authorities. One can hardly read through any of the national dailies without coming across one or more tragedies in different parts of the country. During the last environmental sanitation exercise, precisely on September 26, 2009, a trailer conveying goods ran into hapless commuters waiting to board buses to their various destinations, thereby killing about 10 people at Cele bus stop in Lagos. Two weeks after, a tanker driver carrying 33,000 litres of fuel as a result of the bad road, spilled its contents along Onitsha-Enugu expressway which resulted in an explosion leaving scores dead and many burnt beyond recognition, not to mention the multiple accident that took place along the same route a few days after. One begins to wonder about the value of life in this country as we wait and hope for the next victims since the roads in Nigeria are arguably the cheapest and most used means of transportation. On Tuesday October 21, 2009, I was driving towards Apapa after the Tincan Island second gate when I witnessed an accident. The trailer was descending the Liverpool bridge and had a brake failure thereby losing control. It ran into a Honda saloon car right in front of it dragging a pedestrian along its way before coming to a halt at the foot of the bridge. The pedestrian's leg was badly mangled, as he was rushed by good samaritans to a nearly hospital in Apapa where he was refereed to Igbobi hospital. In the wake of all this, the trailer driver had absconded for fear of been lynched. It is high time we stopped these avoidable deaths. For God's sake, why can't the federal or state government make laws to enable articulated vehicles and tankers ply the roads only at nights when most people are at home? If trailers and tankers ply the roads from 8p.m to 5a.m, I think it would go a long way in preventing most of these avoidable deaths. We urge the Federal Government to come to the aid of the people to repair the roads before they totally become impassable. |
