Politics / Verification: Edo Teacher Can’t Read Own Certificate by R3dsp3ar(m): 2:24am On Aug 14, 2013
BENIN CITY — IT was drama, Tuesday, at the venue of
the verification of certificates of primary school
teachers in Edo State, as a teacher in Asologun
Primary School, Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area
of the state, Mrs. Augusta Odemwinge could not read
a sworn affidavit she purportedly tendered as part of
her credentials.
The state governor, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole, who paid
an unscheduled visit to the state Staff Training
Centre, venue of the exercise, said “if you can’t read,
what do you teach the pupils, what do you write on
the board?”
Chairman of the state Nigeria Union of Teachers, Mr.
Patrick Ikosimi, who was also at the screening to
monitor the exercise, said that the woman’s failure
was “an embarrassment.”
On arrival at the centre, the governor took time to
peruse some of the teacher’s credentials and
documents presented.
When Mrs. Odenwingie took her turn during the
exercise, the governor, who listened to her defence,
asked her to read the affidavit she presented, but she
stuttered, to the consternation of everybody around.
Ikosimi, who described Mrs. Odemwingie’s failure to
read a document she presented as an
embarrassment, said the union was in tune with the
state government on the need to sanitise the school
system.
He said: “We are committed to partnering the
government to reposition education in the state.
What this teacher has just displayed is a show of
shame; it shows the decadence in the education
sector.
“As the chairman of NUT, I had written to the
governor that we are in total support of what he is
doing.
“He should properly involve the NUT, so that together
we can fish out the culprits, who are not viable as far
as the system is concerned,” he said.

Sports / Gerrard Reveals Rooney Talks by R3dsp3ar(m): 2:15am On Aug 14, 2013
England captain Steven
Gerrard has revealed he has
had a conversation with
Wayne Rooney over the
striker's future at Manchester
United.
The 27-year-old is considering
handing in a formal transfer
request in order to push
through a move to Chelsea
this summer having grown disillusioned with life at Old
Trafford.
Despite being ruled out of United's Community Shield
win over Wigan Athletic on Sunday with a shoulder
injury, Rooney has been participating in training with
Roy Hodgson's squad ahead of Wednesday's friendly
against Scotland at Wembley.
"It wouldn't be fair on Wayne for me to talk about that
conversation but of course I am close to him," Gerrard
said.
"But for me it is all about how Wayne Rooney is feeling
for tomorrow's game and I am sure he will sort the
other stuff out."
Other than participating in a behind-closed-doors
friendly against Real Betis on August 3, Rooney has not
played in a match since England's 2-2 draw with Brazil
on June 2.
Gerrard concedes Rooney is lacking in fitness but feels
the forward is prepared to start in Wednesday's fixture.
"He is certainly not match fit," Gerrard continued.
"But it is the same old Wayne Rooney in training, he
looks good, he is scoring goals. He is certainly ready to
play, he needs these minutes for his confidence and I
am sure he will be itching to start."

WHEN WILL HE SUMMIT TRANSFER REQUEST

Politics / Arbitrary Deductions From Police Salaries by R3dsp3ar(m): 1:38pm On Aug 13, 2013
Policemen across the country have raised alarm over
what they described as, “arbitrary deductions from
their salaries”, and called on the Minister of Police
Affairs and the National Assembly to intervene on the
situation. The personnel alleged that the Mechanised
Salary Section of the police made deductions of
N5,000 each from their salaries without notice so as
to enable the authorities to procure shares of Fokas
Savings and Loans Limited. Some of the policemen
who spoke on condition of anonymity alleged that
the scheme was “dubious”, because they were not
informed about it prior to the salary deduction.
They added that it was after the first cut that some of
them were informed by some superiors who
explained that the amount would be deducted
monthly until further notice. An Inspector narrated
that: “Last week I received a text message from my
bank notifying me that my salary had been paid.
However, I found out that N5,000 had been
deducted. It was a few days later that we were given
forms and we were then told that we had to buy
shares compulsorily.
“How could the deductions have been made before I
even filled the form? The police authorities are
leveraging on the fact that policemen cannot openly
protest. The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed
Abubakar, must look into this”, the Inspector said.
Another policeman also alleged that the scheme was
not well planned, saying some of the officers and
men approaching retirement “should be left out”.
According to him: “I have been a policeman for 34
years and I am close to retirement. People like me
should have been left out from this scheme. I am
already a member of the Nigeria Police Cooperative
Multipurpose Society. Who is forcing people to buy
shares that are unclear?
“N2,000 was deducted from the salaries of senior
police officers while N1,000 was deducted from the
rank and file as compulsory contribution towards the
World Police and Fire Games in which Nigerian
policemen will participate. Why can’t the Federal
Government pay from its own purse?”, another
officer who said he would be retiring in November
this year queried.
Responding, Police Spokesman Frank Mba confirmed
the cuts but said it is legal and in order.
“We are indeed deducting salaries of every service
personnel and it will continue for two months. It is
legal and for the best interest of the members of the
Force. We have documents backing up the
deductions”, Mr. Mba said.
He promised to show our reporter the backup
documents any time required.
Meanwhile, a Vigilante Group in Kebbi state has
arrested a police constable among five cable thieves
in Kardi/Ambursa Development Area of the state.
Narrating the incident, the Deputy Commandant,
Operations, of the Vigilante Group, Mohammed
Lawal , told journalists in Birnin Kebbi that his men
caught the cable thieves “red-handed”.
The DC confirmed that among those in custody was a
police constable arrested along with four others and
that they seized his identity card and other bank
documents found in his possession.
“We arrested five of the vandals including a police
constable on the spot; we have his identity card and
bank documents in his possession as our evidence.
We have handed them over to the police for further
investigation’’, the commandant said.
When contacted, the Deputy Police Public Relations
Officer in Kebbi state, Inspector Bala Sule said he
would not comment on the matter because the
commissioner of police was not in town.

I’ve Never Collected A Kobo To Do a Collabo
With Any Artiste – Ice Prince

Ice Prince Dispels Rumours. “…I don’t charge a
kobo for collabos”
Finally, the international hit maker has cleared
the air.
Perhaps bothered by the incessant rumors rife
about the fees many highly rated musicians
allegedly charge in order to collaborate with
other artistes, recent BET Best Africa Act Ice
Prince has come out finally to set the record
straight.
“I’ve never collected a kobo to do a collabo
with any artiste. If the song is dope send it to
me and I’ll work with it,” the hit maker affirmed
in between his exciting set at the grand finale
of the Star Music Trek concert that held at the
hockey pitch of the National Stadium Surulere
on August 10, 2013.
The hip-hop superstar has been to Kenya and
South Africa since his big BET win, and he flew
in from Amsterdam to perform at The Trek
finale in Surulere, Lagos State.
The main question here now, is why doesn’t he?
Why not?
