Politics / Re: Jonathan’s Govt Provoked Soldiers Into Mutiny —buhari by rainbowman: 6:08am On Dec 28, 2015
fulanimafia:
My friend before arms are distributed at the 'tactical level', they have to have been made available by the authorities at the 'strategic level' (viz-a-viz Jonathan).

The clear point being made here is that Jonathan wickedly and selfishly diverted the funds meant to provide these arms and ammunition to defeat Boko Haram, which were diverted to his failed re-election campaign at the cost of thousands of innocent Nigerian lives, and thereby frustrating the soldiers into committing mutiny.

President Buhari is not just sharing petty blame, but is simply laying the foundation for the heavy corruption and human rights violation charges that will keep Jonathan behind bars for a very long time.

I can recall several videos where the insurgents displayed several weapons and ammunition seized from some of our troops. You must understand that the military is a learning organization, a professional one that should not be brought into politics. There is no point for us to have this conversation.

It is quite unbelievable that the former President is being blamed for an action that occurred at the tactical level. For the avoidance of doubt, arms are issued to soldiers at the tactical level and the President operates at the grand strategic level of war. At that level, he is concerned with coordinating the instrument of national power towards attaining national objectives. Decisions concerning the amount of bullets given to troops are within the purview of the battalion commander who operates at the tactical level. One can not even blame a GOC about the amount of bullets given to troops talk less of the President. For instance if you are the CEO of KONGA, you are concerned with the policy direction of your company at the strategic level. If you are faced with a challenge lets say a debt being owed by an uncooperative customer, you decide whether you would negotiate (diplomatic instrument), sanction dealings with him (economic instrument) or engage a debt collector (military instrument). You are not the one to tell the debt collector how to go about his business as those options are best left to him.

Nice one Comrade Governor, I'm sure the money will go a long way in soothing the lady's sorrows. However, its only in Nigeria that a governor will embark on a silly publicity stunt like this, point is he was caught on camera and the video exposed his real personality, if it were in other climes the media, civil society and indeed the whole nation ought to condemn this gesture. As in, I don't get, what about others he may have said such and even don worse to without being caught on camera, who will donate money to them. The video shows a self centred, powerful, arrogant man who was not even sober after all the ladies pleas.it's a shame SMH!
Politics / Re: Minister, Aregbesola Disagree Over FG’s Fertiliser Policy by rainbowman: 12:45pm On Sep 05, 2013
From what I could discern from the Summit, the FG has its own over agenda on Agriculture and its up to states to tap in to this overall programme as it suits them. It is about vertical and horizontal integration and the main beneficiaries are the people. The minister further said that he just organized a meeting with all Agric Commissioners of which the Osun State Commissioner was a participant and 97 % if captured Osun farmers benefited from the GES scheme amounting to 58,000 or so farmers. In my opinion I detect a disconnect between his Excellency and his advisers. More so his speech at the end of the session was at best grandstanding as he contradicted himself so many times. I would suggest State Governments rather that throwing away the baby and bath water should key into this scheme to get credit for the business farmers and generally improve the livelihood of the citizenry. I must say, I was genuinely excited from what I watched however on the downside some of the foreign investors expressed their disappointment on the difficulty in getting import waivers for agric machinery, poor state of infrastructure and some government policies. I felt that this could have been highlighted by the newspapers rather than the Aregbesola issue.

I watched the State Governors session yesterday, though, I missed the keynote address from the Honourable Minister of Agriculture. From what I gathered, however, I discovered that the Minister had all the data including names and locations of all farmers who benefited from the GES programme with regards to fertilizer. Moreso, other state governors including the Governors of Kebbi, Anambra, Kogi and Cross Rivers state all had stories of how successful the scheme was but still pointed out some shortcoming where the Minister ought to improve. So its surprising that if some states recorded such feats while Mr Aregbesola could not.Other Governors were talking about improving value chains, bringing in investors and giving them some incentives such as land and tax holidays so as to readily process cash and food products, Mr Aregbesola claimed that the whole Agric transformation was a sham. For instance the Anambra state governor along with Governor Dakingari of Kebbi mentioned their success stories on rice production, using Sure P funds to purchase the products for storage from the peasant farmers in order to ensure price stability and income for the farmers however out brother from Osun state was just purely negative and obviously had no grasp about the issue at hand. I was really dissapointed with his response when asked what his state is doing differently in order to encourage investors to come and invest all he could point out was that he was feeding 300,000 pupils with one egg per week to which the entire session erupted in laughter. That is not to say that venture is not a good feat in itself, but the real question remains the sustainability of the whole venture since the resounding theme of the Summit is to make Agriculture private sector driven. As for the agriculture transformational agenda, I believe that there has to be cooperation between the Federal and State Governments regardless of political orientation, in that the States identify areas which are favourable to the them, bring in the investors and ask the Federal Government to provide gurantees for funding and policies since the state government more or less own the land.

I don't normally comment on this trend but its becoming alarming the way we have chosen to rain all manners of abuses upon our President. Firstly, there is this erroneous impression that the President has not done anything, however, for the first time in a long time we have inter-state rail transport, while some of you would say you want electric bullet trains without asking previous leaders why not an inch was added to the railway lines since independence till date. We have 15 of our airports being upgraded at the same time, this is no mean feat, I work for an international organization where it has taken 3 years just to build one mini terminal without hope of conclusion yet in sight. We have seen reforms in the agricultural sector. I have seen deliberate moves geared at reforming our power sector through privatisation, construction of IPPs and renovation of downed power stations. I have seen construction works on so many roads that were hitherto abandoned. I agree that the President may not be our version of President Palmer of the 24 series but he is working and yet a lot of Nigerians do not respect that. Its a shame really. As for the BH phenomenan, its a shame really but I can say the President is dealing with it in line with global best practices, do you expect to negotiate with terrorist, I can tell you that I have experience BH first hand and there is nothing political about what they hope to achieve, these guys are terrorists and their only objective is to die fighting. P/s monitor the world news during a BH major attack and note the similarities with other attacks worldwide. Nuff said

it is now evident that BH's claim that it wanted to negotiate was nothing but a ruse to buy time and prepare for more attacks on soft targets. This is a terrorist organization and a lot more has to be done to bring them to the books. Most people on this forum blame the government for the actions of this barbarians, thus rationalising their actions. The truth is that these guys are animals and will not stop until they achieve their political aim since their declared objective which is the muslim state of Northern Nigeria is unfeasible. The thing is while we sit at our computers and blame the government for everything, we must remember that these members of BH did not fall out of the sky, they are everywhere, they are our neighbours, friends, etc. Most people refuse to report suspected members and then turn and blame the security agencies for all attacks. We even cite examples from the United States not knowing that most tip offs in the US come from private citizens meeting up with their responbilities hence while we must continue to encourage the security agencies who are doing a good job by the way, we all must be prepared to volunteer information after all the terrorist bomb does not discriminate among individuals.

I totally disagree with you. Here people are not allowed to select the leaders of their choice because these same thieves we call politicians always rig themselves in. Are we supposed to continue watching while they rig themselves in and continue looting?
PS A revolution doesn't necessarily connote violent change. In the middle of the last decade, Georgians moved en mass to the Presidential palace, camped there and told the president except he resigned, they wouldn't leave. The same thing happened in Ukraine and so many other countries. No lives were lost. Please a revolution does not imply violent change. Yes we've practised the violent form of Revolution in this country and it didn't work. Its time to take the less violent approach.
Correction Ukrainians did that and guess what, they drove out the new ruler that came in, plus Omojuwa wants violent change.

Everyone is entitled to his/her own opinion, however, I'm tired of reading articles from some who possess an over inflated ego and who feel that they love this country more than others. Truth be told every right thinking Nigerian loves his country and wants the country to succeed, however, violent revolution has been proved over and over again not to be the answer to Nigeria's myriad of problems. Afterall, it was tried out in 1966 and look at where it got us. Rather, we should educate our people that they possess the power to vote out irresponsible governments and stand by their votes. Those who advocate violent change and are not adaptible to it will be first consumed by their demands. In a very heterogenous country such as ours violent change will only bring about bad blood and a very represive government determined by any means necessary to repress the conditions that brought about the change, while one would feel that its corruption, I say nay, its the freedom of speech and expression which allows us to say what ever we like without fear of being arrested that would be identified as the main problem. Be careful what you wish for Mr Omojuwa because you might very well get it and will regret it. A word is enough for the wise.

Most of your statements on this forum originate from factual errors. Was it proved anywhere that Mr President said anything like that and even if it of were he is just trying to douse already frayed nerves. Unleashing the Army to deal with Boko Haram will definitely lead to alot of innocent people getting hurt for something that they never knew about. In fact that is the difference between fighting state actors and non state actors. These Sect members do not have conventional uniforms, weapons, leadership structure or even equipment. They diffuse into an environment after their acts and this is not even helped by some residents who purposely hide them. Unleashing the Army would mean KILLING anybody that was in the vicinity of a point where an attack took place and that is definitely unjust and would ultimately lead to government losing the war as well as the heart and minds of the local populace. Already some people are even calling for the outright withdrawal of troops because of perceived injustices such as what some of you are requesting for. More importantly, it is even more surprising that just 2 weeks ago the BH sect came out and stated what they really wanted, the resignation of the President and is conversion to Islam. This would have been laughed off in another country but one by one so called eminent Nigerians have come out in the media to request the President to resign. This is definitely a bad precedence. We are in a bad situation but we must realise that out security agents are on top of the situation and given enough time we would reduce these attacks to the barest minimum.

As far am I concerned it people believe what they choose to believe or else how can one seem to rationalize with Mr Gbaja flippant excuse to a case of Fraud or professional negligence on his part. After all he presents himself as if he is a an anti meticulous anti corruption crusader fighting on the side of the masses in the house. It is curious to note that he waited 3 years before realizing that he his client had not received his money and he left his legal practice to a mere secretary to wind down and traveled all the way to Nigeria without leaving his client a forwarding address. He did not even clear the issue until he realized that he was going to be disbarred for unprofessional conduct accepted the charges and settled for a soft landing. He behaved like most of the corrupt politicians who settle for plea bargaining and I am sure that he is no different from them.

Having read most of your comments on this forum, I find it astounding at your level of naivety concerning the BH wahala. This crisis is a classic example of insurgency and subversive opeartions conducted to ensure a change in govt by making the citizenry feel insecure and turning them against the govt. These BH thugs have no clear mandate and are only interested in killing innocent civilians or military/policemen whose only crime is wearing the uniform to protect innocent citizens. Theses guys want all of us to convert or die and it is as simple as that. They are mostly poor illiterates who chose not to go to school and are blaming the govt for their present predicament, the people who started sponsoring them no longer have control over them. Their members are hell bent on dying for their cause because they are mostly cowards who are afraid of going to hell because they cannot live a pious life hence the suicide bombings as they believe that this is a shortcut to heaven. The President and the security agencies are doing their best, men are sleeping on the roads, exposed to all sorts of dangers so that the majority can sleep safe and if not for their efforts only God knows what could have happened by now. So instead of criticising your President and calling him names, I believe its better for all of us to start getting security consciuos and report suspicious pple to the relevant authorities. We all must join hands against this menance. Nigeria is our country, it is not for Boko Haram.

The money for the aviation sector bail out got to them, they were given the loan to save the aviation industry from bankruptcy as most operators were struggling with the high cost of operations in Nigeria coupled with the crippling interest rates from the banks. The CBN thus bailed them out by paying their outstanding loans and funded them with low interest loans so as to guarantee their survival, repayment is contracted right at the ticket counters thus when you pay for an airline ticket, the FG and the airline share the proceeds on a percentage basis. This ensures that the airline does not default in repayment. As for the bailout for the entertainment industry, last time I checked the money is still there, however, our artists and actors are yet to come up with ingenious, viable business plans that would ensure the success of the venture, hence, repayment of the loans.

Reading a lot of your replies leaves me shocked, its like OMG the terrorists have succeeded in deceiving a lot of us into thinking our security agencies are incapable of handling these murderers called Boko Haram. Firstly we must realize that the terrorists are fanatics who are intent on causing confusion, they are fueled by the belief that their acts would eventually lead them on the path to redemption hence their determination to bomb at all costs. Secondly our security agencies are on top of the situation but the fact remains that these acts of suicide bombing are alien to our Nigerian culture and behavior, it seems that the terrorists have started escalating their acts of violence coupled with the systematic decay which has occurred over 40 years of military rule, what we are currently experiencing is a result of ill trained security personnel. The sad thing about the methods adopted by these terrorists is that security agencies can only wait in order to see where they would strike next because we live in large country and there is no definite way of predicting when these guys would strike next, Mr President was simply telling us not to cowered to hide in our shells and not carry on with our daily activities. rather that continuously deriding your President as retarded I would advise that we should come together to fight this menace, by reporting suspicious people and activities to the relevant authorities, we must remember that security is everybody's business.

Sports / Re: Siasia Is Still In Charge Of The Super Eagles by rainbowman: 2:53pm On Oct 14, 2011
The problem with being nicknamed the "Super Eagles" is that you always have to justify that description. Now, more than ever, the tag seems inappropriate.

In 1996, Nigeria won Olympic football gold with a last-minute victory over an Argentine side featuring Ariel Ortega, Javier Zanetti and Hernan Crespo. It had overcome the Brazilian side of Roberto Carlos, Ronaldo and Rivaldo in the semifinals. The Olympic tournament may not be as revered as the World Cup, but it was a significant step for African football on the world stage. The fact that it was technically an under-23 tournament was further reason for optimism -- that generation was set to become a major force in world football.

Fifteen years later, that dream should have been realized. Not with the same group of players, most of whom have now retired, but with their protégés. Instead, Nigerian football was dealt a crushing blow this past Saturday with a 2-2 home draw to Guinea. As a result, Nigeria failed to qualify for the African Cup of Nations for the first time since 1986, although it missed two tournaments in the 1990s for non-sporting reasons.

There are short-term, medium-term and long-term causes for the elimination. The problem with Saturday's game was not a lack of technical or tactical ability, but poor communication. At 2-1 up, Nigeria would have qualified for the tournament as one of the two best-placed runners-up. However, wrong messages from the stands confused the players, meaning that some thought they needed a third goal to advance. The side pushed forward, left gaps at the back, and predictably conceded an equalizer, dropping out of the tournament.

That said, the real blow in the qualification process was the opening-day defeat in Guinea. This came after a week of confusion, when FIFA initially banned Nigeria from its tournaments for political interference, only to lift the ban the day before the match. Hardly the best preparation for a crucial qualifier, with the eventual defeat not surprising.

But it shouldn't come down to losing to Guinea. Nigeria, the most populated African country and one of the more successful at exporting its players to major European leagues, simply lacks the stars of old. There is no Nwankwo Kanu, no Jay-Jay Okocha, no Finidi George.

A friendly just after elimination from your confederation's next regional tournament should, on the face of it, be irrelevant. Tuesday's game against Ghana, however, took on huge importance because it was widely believed that it would determine whether coach Samson Siasia remained in his post -- a win and he continued, a defeat and he was sacked. Typically, the game finished 0-0, prolonging the wait.

That the decision was dependent upon one friendly suggests alarming short-termism from the Nigerian FA, although its technical committee is planning a report detailing how Nigerian football can progress on a wider scale. Throughout the speculation about his job, Siasia has remained a very relaxed figure. Casually attired in a jumper and jeans at the news conference after the Ghana draw, he was "happy that we played a good game and didn't lose." He approved of the way his side passed the ball, the number of opportunities it created, and was satisfied that he'd represented the country well, whatever his future.

"I've not lost a game!" he exclaimed when pressed about his job situation, which is an obvious but entirely valid point. "How many coaches have we had in the last three years? You can't just keep changing coach to have a winning formula."

For the record, Siasia is the sixth coach since the start of 2008. He was a popular appointment, and his track record indicates that he's a wise choice: He won 51 Nigerian caps in the late 1980s and '90s, so he understands the demands of playing for the side, and has previously coached the U20 and U23 squads. Nigeria's style of play has progressed since his appointment, too. There is more structure, the team moves the ball quicker, and it often tries to play out from the back -- all while remaining unbeaten, despite the Guinea disappointment.

[+] Enlarge
Bryn Lennon/Getty Images
Nigerian coach Samson Siasia has conducted himself with intelligence and forethought, but it may not be enough to avoid being sacked.
Usually, an embarrassing failure at international level is followed by a clean sweep of the playing squad to make way for a new generation, but Nigeria's current side is already youthful. The average age of the starting XI against Ghana was 24, which Siasia will see as a positive and a sign that this group can stay together and move forward. But fans and the media may want to see clear change.

Rather than new blood, this Nigeria side needs a leader. Chelsea's Jon Obi Mikel is the obvious star man, yet some feel he is the main problem with the side. Whereas he performs a disciplined, reliable holding job for his club side, at the international level he gets caught out of position and ambles back when he loses the ball. Fegor Ogude played instead of him against Ghana, and impressed with his presence and tackling ability.

The other type of player Nigeria lacks -- a playmaker -- also involves Mikel. At the junior level, he was an attacking midfielder with both drive and guile, but at Chelsea he was converted into a defensive-minded destroyer. He still wears the No. 10 shirt for Nigeria, and perhaps his strolling indicates he wants to play a more creative role. But he seems unable to exert influence upon the side, much to the disappointment of those who thought he was set to be a world-class creator.

One bright note was the performance of the U20 side at this summer's world championship in Colombia. Ahmed Musa, a winger playing with Dutch club VVV, has already been involved with the senior side, and others, like Olarenwaju Kayode, may be ready to join them.

Siasia's future is still up in the air. The Nigerian FA was expected to make a decision Thursday, but has seemingly delayed it until next week. Sections of fans may be unhappy with Siasia, but the way he's conducted himself in charge suggests intelligence and forethought, two qualities Nigeria desperately needs if it's to return to being "super" once more.

The Nigerian Air Force has 2 more active C 130 H, this one had been grounded for a while and was going for a D check in Cambridge, an in depth maintenance check, so as to be reactivated. The routes would have been planned in advance and all authorities alerted due to the state of the aircraft and the obvious fact that this is a military aircraft thus permission would have to be sought and granted in advance. These aircraft played a critical role during the April elections, transporting vital election materials and troops when the post election violence erupted. We ought to know that the Nigerian Air Force is a professional military organization and the pilot took all the necessary emergency measures when faced with a communication problem.
