Politics / Supreme Court Hears Six Appeals On Atiku’s Case Wednesday by rasaqadeseun(m): 10:22am On Oct 28, 2019
The Supreme Court has fixed Wednesday for the hearing of about six appeals on the case instituted by the Peoples Democratic Party and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, to challenge the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari at the February 23, 2019 poll, it was learnt on Sunday.

Atiku and his party had jointly filed their appeal before the apex court to challenge the September 11, 2019 judgment of the Justice Mohammed Garba-led Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal.

The tribunal’s judgment, which Atiku and his party are dissatisfied with, had dismissed their petition challenging the outcome of the February 23, 2019 poll.

Subsequently, the petitioners on September 23, 2019 filed 66 grounds of appeal before the Supreme Court to challenge the judgment of the tribunal.

The PDP had publicly expressed concerns over the alleged delayed in the hearing of the appeals relating to the presidential election case.

Our correspondent learnt from senior members of Atiku and Buhari’s legal teams on Sunday that Wednesday had been fixed for the hearing of all the appeals.

Chief Chris Uche (SAN), a top member of the appellants’ legal team, confirmed to The PUNCH on Sunday that Wednesday had been finally fixed for the hearing of the pending appeals in respect of the February 23, 2019 presidential poll.

Uche said, “Yes, we were notified through a text message from the registry of the Supreme Court this morning (Sunday) that the appeals would be coming up for hearing on Wednesday.

“He said he expected that there would be a formal service of the hearing notice.

One of the senior lawyers in the Buhari’s legal team, Dr Alex Izinyon (SAN), also confirmed the Wednesday’s scheduled hearing to our correspondent on Sunday.

He said, “Yes, I can confirm that the hearing comes up on Wednesday. We have received hearing notices in respect of the five to six appeals scheduled for hearing.

“Four of the appeals are interlocutory appeal. There is also an appeal challenging the main judgment.”

The Supreme Court’s Director, Press and Information, Dr Festus Akande, also confirmed the Wednesday hearing date in a text message he sent to our correspondent on Sunday.

Celebrities / Jeff Bezos Reclaims World’s Richest Man Tag — Few Hours After Losing To Bill Gat by rasaqadeseun(m): 10:09am On Oct 28, 2019
Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, US multinational technology company, has reclaimed his spot as the world’s richest man after losing the position for a few hours to Bill Gates, Microsoft co-founder.

According to Forbes, Gates had temporarily displaced Bezos, who is also the owner of Washington Post, on Thursday, after Amazon’s shares dropped by seven percent after-hours trading — a development that saw its founder’s net worth reduced to $103.9 billion.

However, Bezos returned to the top position at the end of Friday’s markets, after his shares fell by just 1% to $1,760.78, putting his net worth at $109.9 billion — and back at number one.

Gates is currently worth $105.8 billion.

The Microsoft founder has held the position for most of the times over the last two decades.

He was however, displaced in 2018 by Bezos who was not only the richest man then but also the first man on earth to attain a net worth of $160 billion.

Subject teachers are needed in Ogun, Ibadan and Lagos. Visit www.syllaboss.com.ng/teacher.php to submit your CV and share with your friends.

Bezos’s inconsistencies in ranking is widely attributed to the divorce of Mackenzie, his ex-wife. The divorce is said to have taken a huge toll on his net worth.

MacKenzie presently ranks among the top richest in the world with a net worth of $32.7 billion.

“It’s possible Bezos could lose the crown once more as Amazon continues to invest heavily in infrastructure to support one-day shipping—a delivery time that he hopes will become standard for all Amazon Prime members,” said Forbes.

The Amazon CEO is said to have first joined The Forbes 400 list of richest Americans in 1998.

Celebrities / Chioma Appears Unbothered About Baby Mama Prank by rasaqadeseun(m): 12:06pm On Oct 27, 2019
New mum and fiancée of music star, David Adeleke, aka Davido, Chioma Rowland, seems to be unbothered about reports that went viral earlier in the week that her hubby had impregnated another lady.

The disturbing claims made the rounds just days after Chioma welcomed her son, David Adedeji Ifeanyi Adeleke Jr.

In a video uploaded to Instagram, two ladies, simply identified as Helen and Susan, accused the ‘Fall’ singer of impregnating Susan after a one-night stand at Eko Hotel and Suites in Victoria Island, Lagos.

Reacting to the claims, Davido vowed to sue the ladies for slander, with a vow to demand N30bn from them.

With a N1m cash prize for anybody who could offer useful information on the ladies, it came as no shock that Davido soon announced on social media that the ladies, who he described as ‘low lives’, had been found.

He wrote on Twitter, “Found them. I will be suing both culprits for N30bn in damages! Dem go shit that money for Kirikiri (They will excrete the money in Kirikiri Prisons).”

Meanwhile, the ladies in question later said their claim was meant to be a harmless joke/prank, adding that Nigerians took things too far.

Interestingly, amid all the social media brouhaha, Chioma appeared unruffled. Basking in the euphoria of being a first-time mum, the 24-year-old fondly called Chef Chi shared some pictures she took in the later stage of her pregnancy. She also lovingly promoted her hubby’s latest single on her Instagram page.

Davido who is known to be generous to his fans, lamented that his wife deserved better than the slanderous reports after nine months of pregnancy. He took to Instagram to write, “After all the good I do for the community and people, this is what I get.

“My wife stays out of the way, doesn’t trouble anybody, minds her business and this is what she gets after nine months of carrying my first son.

“They went too far. As much as I’d love to forgive them, I can’t and they must face the law.”

However, the latest claims continued to generate mixed reactions on social media. While some came to Davido’s defence, others noted that celebrities led careless lives and were often unbothered about having children out of wedlock.

Davido has three children. His first daughter, Aurora Imade, was born in 2015; while Hailey, his second daughter, was born in 2017.

Drama In Court As Judge Asks Maina To Stop Looking At Him

Okon stated this when he was about to rule on the application for bail filed by Maina's lawyer , Ahmed Raji. The court registrar in an attempt to amplify the directive of the judge, further compounded the matter as he asked Maina to look at the prosecution, who brought him to court.

There was a mild drama at the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Friday as presiding judge, Justice Abang Okon, told the embattled former Chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team, Abdulrasheed Maina, to stop looking at him.

Okon stated this when he was about to rule on the application for bail filed by Maina's lawyer , Ahmed Raji.

Okon said, "Please I don't want the 1st defendant to look at me when I am delivering my ruling so that I can concentrate."

The court registrar in an attempt to amplify the directive of the judge, further compounded the matter as he asked Maina to look at the prosecution, who brought him to court.

The judge later continued with his ruling as he ordered the defendant to be remanded in prison custody.

Politics / Nigeria Is Wasting Its Greatest Resource, Young People. by rasaqadeseun(m): 7:39pm On Oct 25, 2019
Nigerian universities need to do more to properly train our students
What is the biggest natural resource in Nigeria? No, it’s not crude petroleum, petroleum gas, or even cocoa beans.

It’s young people.

In today’s youthful Nigeria, more than 60% of the population is under the age of 25. Contrast that with an ageing country like the UK, where the under-25 figure is now as low as 20%.

But like any resource, young people are only valuable if a country uses them wisely.

Education is a leading indicator of economic growth, more so for countries starting with low education levels, as seen in Asian countries like South Korea. If Nigeria can educate her young people, we would have a resource that can power our country more effectively, more diversely and for much longer than any oilfield.

Where to start?
We can begin by reforming one tier of education with an established link to economic growth: tertiary education. Universities are producers of human capital, and they influence economic growth through innovation, noting the levels of patent production as a good measure such contribution. A recent study of 15,000 universities in 78 countries has shown that a 10% increase in the number of universities is associated with over 0.4% higher GDP per capita in that region.

But to achieve such economic benefits from higher education, we need a strong network of universities—and at the moment, we simply haven’t got it. We haven’t invested nearly enough money in our basic and university systems and our under-25s. Therefore, Nigeria’s most significant natural resource is being wasted.

Nigerians ought to know that the education of young people at universities isn’t just good for them, it’s good for Nigeria. University education has known positive spill over effects on broader society, and the growth of an economy depends on the size and quality of its knowledge base.

We have more than 160 national and private universities. You would expect all these universities to have an impact on the economic growth of Africa’s largest country. Sadly, research has found little evidence of this. Our universities, it seems, are under-performing both in terms of scholarly output (a measure of research activity) and capacity. In terms of scholarly output, Nigeria’s universities produce just 32% and 44% of what is produced in Egypt and South Africa, respectively. Meanwhile, Nigeria has nearly four times more universities than Egypt and over six times more than South Africa.

In relation to universities’ direct contribution to economic growth, data from the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) showed 234,700 patents registered in Africa in the last 22 years. South Africa accounted for 55% of these, while Nigeria registered a mere 1%—less than 2,500 patents. Knowing this, it should not surprise us that South Africa’s GDP per capita is over three times greater than Nigeria’s.

Is funding the problem?
In 2017, 380,000 university applicants failed to secure a place as demand exceeded capacity. In fact, the lack of funding permeates the entire education system; Nigeria famously has over 13 million children out of school.

Properly financed and well-run universities create the requisite skills for a workforce to compete in an increasingly competitive global economy. Critically, universities also play an essential role in cultivating local industries, driving innovation, and creating new jobs.

The Gross Domestic Expenditure on Research and Development (GERD) as a percentage of GDP is a widely used funding level indicator. Let’s compare the domestic funding assigned to research and development in the two biggest African economies: South Africa is at 0.76% and Nigeria props the table again at 0.2%. To put this in context, the global average was 1.77% in 2010. In short, the average country dedicates nine times more resources to research and development than Nigeria. It is worth noting that the overall proportion of the GERD sourced from abroad was 11% for South Africa and 1% for Nigeria.

Of course, the underwhelming performance of Nigerian universities is no secret. That’s why more fortunate students emigrate to countries with more prestigious schools. The Senate Committee on Tertiary Education Trust fund (TETFUND) has stated that Nigerians spend over $2billion (₦750billion) annually on student education abroad. This is almost 25% more than the annual Federal budget for education (₦605billion in 2018).

During his time as President, Goodluck Jonathan sought to address this by setting up the Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) policy, which was to focus on strategic areas of national priority, from Agriculture and Information technology to Health. The STI proposed the establishment of the National Research and Innovation Foundation (NRIF) with a minimum of 1% of GDP to ensure investment of adequate resources in research and innovation for sustainable economic development. This would equate to a five-fold increase on current levels of research investment and a step in the right direction.

An established NRIF could fund research and development across national priority areas to support the economic development of the nation. The policy, though signed into law, has yet to be implemented. We must implement it now, and use the Foundation to drive improvement in research to support economic development and social mobility.

It is imperative that Nigerian universities are better supported to help develop new sources of wealth generation and consequently tax revenues for the government. What is required is a clearly aligned industrial and tertiary education strategy.

This is one of the critical ways we can begin to support the young population, our children, Nigeria’s greatest asset. Let’s help them; let’s use them; let’s educate them.

Business / Learn Not To Neglect Any Complaint From Your Clients. by rasaqadeseun(m): 3:34pm On May 16, 2019
Learn not to neglect any complaint from your clients.
"My Car does not start when I buy Vanilla Ice Cream”, said a Man to General Motors.

Did you ever imagine that an “Ice Cream” could shake the entire General Motors? Sometimes ago, the Pontiac Division of General Motors received a very funny complaint from one of its customers. It was so weird & bizarre that it took the entire General Motors by storm. However, on reading the entire Case, this definitely caught our interest and we realized that this is by far an epic case of ‘Customer Care’. It teaches us that however weird the complaint is, never under estimate your Client!

Below is the complaint, which was received by the Pontiac Division of General Motors:

“This is the second time I have written to you, and I don’t blame you for not answering me, because I sounded crazy, but it is a fact that we have a tradition in our family of Ice-Cream for dessert after dinner each night, but the kind of ice cream varies so, every night, after we’ve eaten, the whole family votes on which kind of ice cream we should have and I drive down to the store to get it. It’s also a fact that I recently purchased a new Pontiac and since then my trips to the store have created a problem…

You see, every time I buy a vanilla ice-cream, when I start back from the store my car won’t start. If I get any other kind of ice cream, the car starts just fine. I want you to know I’m serious about this question, no matter how silly it sounds What is there about a Pontiac that makes it not start when I get vanilla ice cream, and easy to start whenever I get any other kind?”

The Pontiac President was understandably skeptical about the letter, but nevertheless sent an Engineer to check it out anyway.

Learning Point No. 1– Always respond to your Customer Complaints & make them feel you took an Action!

Moving on, the Engineer & the Man drove to the ice cream store that night. It was vanilla ice cream that night and, sure enough, to the Engineer’s surprise, after they came back to the car, it actually wouldn’t start.

To be sure, the Engineer returned for three more nights. The first night, they got chocolate. The car started. The second night, he got strawberry. The car started. The third night he ordered vanilla. The car failed to start. Now that is something scary!

Now the Engineer, being a logical man, refused to believe that this man’s car was allergic to vanilla ice cream. He arranged, therefore, to continue his visits for as long as it took to solve the problem. And toward this end he began to take notes, he jotted down all sorts of data: time of day, type of gas used, time to drive back and forth etc.

In a short time, he had a clue: the man took less time to buy vanilla than any other flavor. Why? The answer was in the layout of the store. Vanilla, being the most popular flavor, was in a separate case at the front of the store for quick pickup. All the other flavors were kept in the back of the store at a different counter where it took considerably longer to check out the flavor.

Now, the question for the Engineer was why the car wouldn’t start when it took less time. Eureka – Time was now the problem – not the vanilla ice cream!

The engineer quickly came up with the answer, which was “Vapor Lock”.

So what actually happened?

Since the Man took extra time to get the other flavors, it allowed the engine to cool down sufficiently to start. When the Man got vanilla, the engine was still too hot for the vapor lock to dissipate!

Hence, the case of the Vanilla Ice-Cream was finally solved!

Learning Point No. 2 - Even crazy looking problems are sometimes real & all problems seem to be simple only when we find the solution, with cool thinking.
