SportsFIFA World Cup (SA 2010)Group Draws by rasputinn(op): 10:15pm On Dec 03, 2009
[img][/img]

With 189 days to the kick off of the 2010 FIFA world cup in South Africa and with each of the qualified countries hoping to dethrone Italy as world champions and pocket the prize money of $30 million, the global football fraternity  is very anxious to know which of the 32 countries will be drawn in the same group.
Players, coaches, officials, journalists and indeed supporters of countries that will feature in the mundial are ALL silently praying for an "easy draw" for their countries (even if they would not admit to so do). However, all the prayers, wishes, permutations and anxiety about the groupings will be laid to rest in less than 22 hours time when the official draws for the 2010 FIFA world cup are expected to hold in Cape Town,South Africa
Already FIFA has seeded 8 top countries, the seeding system was based on the October 2009 FIFA rankings(with the exception of England, which is ranked 9th in the world but was only seeded ahead of France which is ranked 7th and Portugal currently ranked 5th because of the impressive qualification campaign by Fabio Capello's squad ) and  is aimed at spreading the top teams across the groups so they don’t meet each other at the outset of the competition.
The seeded countries are;Brazil, Argentina, Spain, Italy, Germany, England,Holland and host country South Africa.
With this arrangement,no one seeded country will be drawn against another seeded country in the same group.

From tommorows draws,there will be eight groups of four countries,drawn from four pots,the first pot contains the top countries that have been seeded by FIFA.The pots are;

Pot 1: Netherlands, South Africa, Brazil, Argentina, Spain, Italy, Germany, England
Pot 2: Japan, South Korea, North Korea, Australia, New Zealand, United States, Mexico, Honduras
Pot 3: Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Ghana, Algeria, Paraguay, Chile and Uruguay
Pot 4: France, Portugal, Denmark, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland, Greece, Serbia

The event will be witnessed by national, continental and world football officials, members of the SA government, journalists from around the world as well as coaches of participating countries, with the exception of Coach Diego Amando Maradona of Argentina

After the draws,the group matches will then be played according to the  format in the following link;

http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/matches/index.html

Finally, while we await FIFA to carry out the draws,I wish the Nigerian flag bearers; The Super Eagles (hope they'll put up a superlative showing at WOZA 2010) a very kind draw. wink wink

Id advise u to go into d stockmarket for d following reasons
1
the realestate market requires quite a lot of fund to go into<at least 500k minimal >
2
the stockmarket is at its lowest period in years and with d application of some fundamental principles one is assured of steady returns ad infinitun
3
real estate investment is quite illiquid ie difficult to quickly dispose for urgent cash
4
stock prices are at such a depressed low that dividend appreciation and bonus would make u realize your capital and dispose of in less than 2 yrs this cant happen in real estate.

Enjoy
It would depend on his investment mentality and the reason for investing, either to trade or build wealth. If to trade, stay off the stock market now,if to build wealth, then heed the advice of Warren Buffet;don't pick stocks, buy great companies
Do you know that even with all the hulabaloo about market crash on the NSE,some stocks like Nigeria breweries,Guiness etc did not lose a KOBO rather they appreciated ALL THROUGH THE PERIOD

CBN directs rescued banks to trim workforce, salaries

There are indications that the Central Bank of Nigeria has directed rescued banks to cut executive and other staff emoluments by at least 30 per cent.

A memo from the CBN to the banks last month, obtained by our correspondent on Thursday, said the banks should immediately submit action plans for branch and staff rationalisation in order to “utilise some hidden economies of scale” in their operations.

The banks, according to the memo signed by Mr. Thompson Sunday on behalf of Director of Banking Supervision CBN, are also required to submit their action plans for enhanced revenue generation and cost reduction in the six months following the date the directive was given.

The CBN also directed them to comply with its directive in the special examination report by increasing total provision for loans and other known losses by the end of September 2009 and publish the full result not later than October 31.

The memo said, “You are requested to recognise any additional diminution in the bank‘s warehoused shares in its books latest by October 31, 2009.

”Furthermore, we request that you take the following steps immediately to check the dwindling operating performance of the bank: immediately reduce executive and other staff emoluments by at least 30 per cent and submit an action plan for branch and staff rationalisation in order to utilise some hidden economies of scale in the bank‘s operations.”

A source in the CBN had told our correspondent that those banks that got the apex bank‘s funds would have to cut costs while ensuring efficiency, saying that was the practice in the global economy as a result of liquidity challenges.

Investigations by our correspondent had revealed that employees were no longer sure of their jobs as banks engaged in cost-cutting moves, including mass sacking of workers, to achieve clean and robust balance sheets before the December 31, 2009 common year-end.

Some bankers, who spoke in separate interviews with our correspondent, had said the atmosphere in banks was currently tense, adding that many workers were being forced to resign, not only for target reasons.

A top worker in one of the banks adjudged safe by the CBN said that the jobs of many of those that had been promoted as a result of their deposit mobilising capabilities were on the line now that banking was not about size but efficiency.

She said, ”It has dawned on the bank that it will be difficult to continue to afford the huge salaries of some workers, which had been agreed on at the point of entry in view of expected deposit. There have also been memos saying that the bank wants to streamline processes and restructure for better performance while some workers have been asked to resign.”

Another employee of one of the controversial banks that scaled through the CBN‘s second round of audit, said although the bank did not sack workers, even when others were sacking for deposit reasons, the management told workers last week that there would be ”staff audit” at the end of the year.

This, he said, had sent panic waves across the banks, adding that bankers were not excited about the approaching Christmas and New Year celebrations because no one knew what could happen before the end of the year.

The Head, Corporate Affairs, CBN, had told our correspondent that the CBN was encouraging banks to cut costs in line with the reality in the global economy, including the sale of private jets acquired by some chief executive officers.

Union Bank Reports Biggest Loss in Nigeria's Corporate History

Union Bank of Nigeria Plc has just released its 12 months (full year) trading result to the floor of the Nigerian Stock Exchange. The company, which was among the initial, five (5) banks affected by the CBN/NDIC historic intervention, reported a staggering loss of N72.854 billion.

The Central Bank of Nigeria in conjunction with NDIC had earlier in the year carried out a special audit of the Union Bank alongside others, and found it wanting in the aspect of its capital adequacy and liquidity. The subsequent, mandatory provisioning made in respect of both its non-performing loans and diminution in value of investment assets has thus seen the bank reporting the biggest loss in Nigeria’s corporate history

PoliticsI Don't Care That Yar Adua Gets Well by rasputinn(op): 7:45am On Nov 30, 2009
Why Should I Care? Ijeoma Nwogwugwu

I am not one of those who wish President Umaru Yar’Adua well. Why should I, if he and those around him don’t see the need for the president to take some time out to attend to his fragile constitution? In spite of his dire condition, he has elected to run the affairs of state by telephone. For all intents and purpose, the president is not getting the rest he needs to recuperate from his heart condition because he does not want to hand over the reins of government temporarily to his deputy. Instead, he cradles the telephone by his side attending to matters in the country by proxy.
Since his days as governor of Katsina State, the president hardly boasted a ruddy disposition. Most of us were unaware his ill-health because he governed a quiet semi-arid state, which until his emergence on the national stage, did not feature prominently on the national radar. The president would have probably carried on unnoticed and been allowed to attend to his health unimpeded, had he not chosen to accept the presidency foisted on him. Ever since, his every sneeze, cough and twitch has been micro-analysed to the minutest detail.
The paradox about this sorry state is that when the nation got to realise that the man who was contesting for the presidential election in 2007 was not 99 per cent fit to steer this ship of state, we accepted. We accepted on the grounds that whatever ailment was afflicting him could be managed and was not serious enough to incapacitate his ability to manage this complex amalgam of pseudo-nations. It was a huge leap of faith that very few countries have ever taken. It is this same leap of faith that he has refused to take repeatedly every time he has had to travel outside on official assignments and/or for personal reasons to see the coterie of physicians attending to his afflicted body.
His lack of confidence in his vice president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has never been hidden. Unlike his predecessor, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who until his public spat out with his deputy, he has hardly handed over critical assignments to his vice president. In some instances, routine matters such as presiding over meetings of the federal executive council have had to be deferred pending the return of the president. At other times, Nigeria’s representation at global events requiring the presence of world leaders had to be handed over to the foreign affairs minister, Ojo Maduekwe.
Yar’Adua’s insistence on holding on to the reins from his sick bed was made the more glaring last week when the president’s spokesman, Segun Adeniyi, called international media houses to correct the initial news reports they had sent out that the vice president was in charge. What a wholesome picture on how the largest black nation on earth is administered.
Some have often argued that Yar’Adua and Jonathan have never had a symbiotic relationship based on mutual trust and common interest. They were, the argument goes, forced into an alliance of strange bedfellows by the ruling party, the Peoples Democratic Party. Personally, I find this line of reasoning flawed. Lest we forget, the president himself was not chosen by popular acclamation by his party. He was hand-picked from a subjective process that forced more popular and possibly worthier candidates who wanted to be president to step aside. Just like his forced marriage with his deputy, he was foisted on us. Had he been the popular choice of the party and assumed the presidency through a process that was not flawed, he probably won’t think twice about handing over to a deputy for short or even extended periods.
As unfortunate as it is, the president’s present ailment should not come as a surprise to anyone. Acute pericarditis is one of several complications that can arise from a failed kidney(s) – that is if we are to believe the speculations about the remote causes of his poor health. Even though the president has repeatedly refused too divulge the primary cause of his ailment, his physical deterioration since assuming the presidency has been glaring to all but the blind. The added strain of running a complex entity like Nigeria would only speed up his delicate condition.
Once the pains in the president’s chest region set in and his physician diagnosed the exact nature of his current predicament, they should have counselled him to take a break. Pericarditis is one of those conditions that do not heal quickly if the patient continues to engage in strenuous and stressful activities. Insufficient rest could even lead to a fatal heart attach. He should have hand over properly and reposed the same confidence in his deputy as the nation has in him in the last two and half years.
His insistence on running the country from his hospital bed in far away Saudi Arabia cannot help him much. Neither does it help us much. In fact, the president is not doing this country any huge favours by hugging his telephone. In his current state, any decisions he has to take from his hospital bed would probably be impaired by medication and his state of mind. In so doing, the president and his handlers treat the nation and its citizens like we are their private property. We are not.
He and his vice president were supposedly elected on the same platform to run this country for four years. Just the same, the drafters of the 1999 Constitution envisaged a situation in which the Number One citizen may not always be fully disposed to carry out his duties to the best of his abilities. It is for this reason the constitution provides for a fall back option in the person of the vice president. Jonathan, therefore, should be allowed to take over until the president makes a full recovery. In times like this, we need certainty not further uncertainty. We need clarity as to who is in charge and not whispers and further rumours over who is running the country.
Until that happens, I will not lose sleep over the president’s health. Since he is unconcerned about the nation’s well being, why should I be about his health?
