They were protesting against a rise in prices from 65 naira to 140 naira, not against 86 naira.

The government later went to 97 naira as a result of the protest. Later cut it to N87

Even then, by 2013 , many stations outside big cities were sellig above 100 naira. Some were already going as high as 185 naira.

Also government reducing prices to 87 naira led to a huge subsidy claims debt that was not settled till 2018.

Reason for GEJ raising prices to 140 from 65 naira? By then it was costing 99 naira to bring in one liter of fuel. And we were selling it at 65 naira then. GEJ raised prices first to 140 then to 97 , cutting the subsidies we were paying.

By 2015, fuel was 87 naira. To bring in one liter of fuel was costing 132 naira.
