THE BLOOD OF ABEL CRIES TO HIGH HEAVENS A PUBLIC STATEMENT ON THE AWO OMAMMA KILLINGS ISSUED BY MOST REV. LUCIUS IWEJURU UGORJI, METROPOLITAN ARCHBISHOP OF OWERRI. The gruesome murder of some youths at Awomama in Imo State a few days ago has caused public outrage. Since this incident, there have been various narratives about who carried out this dastardly and abominable act, and why. While some members of the public blame government and her security outfit EbubeAgu for murdering unarmed and defenceless young men coming back from a wedding, the DSS Director, on the other hand, confirmed that his men carried out an operation in a camp, where those he described as 'bandits' were killed, as a means of ensuring public security. Our aim is not to delve into this web of contradictory narratives, but to unequivocally condemn this mindless blood-letting, and similar senseless killings, which have bedevilled Igbo society, especially Imo State in recent times. Our soil has been defiled by the abominable shedding of innocent blood. We are becoming a society that has no regard for the sanctity of human life and are ready to waste human life at the least provocation. How many of our youths have been cut down in their prime? No society can flourish or survive when her future leaders and productive sector of the population are mercilessly mowed down for mere suspicion. Like Abel's blood (Gen 4:10), the blood of many slaughtered youths in our land is crying to high heaven. Similarly, like the lamentations of Rachel at Ramah (Gen 30:1), the lamentations of mothers, who have lost their beloved ones at Awomama, are inconsolable. Law and Order are not synonymous with jungle justice. While no one should condone any form of banditry or lawlessness from any quarters, yet jungle justice and extra judicial killings cannot be a solution to the challenges of law and order. Let us reiterate here that we condemn all killings from all quarters, whether private or public, whether by overzealous, trigger-happy security men or by paramilitary or cults groups. As moral agents, no one should clearly aim at taking away human life no matter the circumstances. The Awomama massacre should not be swept under the carpet. That slaughter, no matter the reasons, is barbaric, offensive, and totally unacceptable. Enough is enough! We, therefore, call on govemment to underlake a thorough and transparent investigation in order to unearth the perpetrators of the heinous crime and bring them to book. For public accountability in this matter is the only way to assuage public anger on the merciless killing and stop dangerous rumours. May God grant eternal life to the deceased and consolation to the bereaved! + Lucius Iwejuru Ugorii Metropolitan Archbishop of Owerri Catholic Archdiocese July 22, 2022.

He was chased into the compound by the gunmen, who rained more bullets into his chest and he died on the spot. He would have been saved if relations were allowed to protect their guests”. Speaking during the visit, Bishop Ukwuoma expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family. “On hearing the unfortunate incident, he said, I and the priests of the Catholic Diocese of Orlu decided to come and pay our condolences and identify with you in this moment of grief and hardship”. From reactions on social media concerning the killing of the Sokoto female student over blasphemy, it seems that more than 98% of Muslims are in support of the killing and many even threatened more violence and killings opely including some public and government figures. One Ibrahim Maqari, imam of the National Mosque Abuja justified the horrific murder of the student blaming her for crossing the red lines of Islamic faith. Absolving her killers, Mr Maqari hinted grave consequences awaited persons who crossed the religion’s red lines, noting that such conduct will not be tolerated. A Sokoto government official, Anas Mohammad Sani, also threatened that more Christians in Nigeria will be murdered if they say things considered disrespectful to their revered Prophet Muhammad. “Muslims don’t take insults against beloved prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم in whatever form,” he warned. In all this, should we now concluded that all muslems in one way or the other supports violence and terror? |

The Anglican Province of Owerri, Imo State, says it will engage the police to find out why it desecrated the church while enforcing the arrest of Uche Nwosu at St Peter’s Anglican Church, Eziama Obieri in the Nkwerre Local Government Area of the state on Sunday during a thanksgiving service. The church said that while it supports the arrest of individuals who committed crimes no matter how highly placed they are, the invasion of a church of worship by security operatives while service was ongoing was unacceptable. Nwosu, who is the son-in-law of former Governor Rochas Okorocha, was arrested by policemen at the church for reasons unknown but later released. The Archbishop of the province, Most Rev Dr David Onuoha, in a statement on Monday, said that the shooting of bullets and dispersing of worshippers had never been witnessed in the over 160 years of the existence of the church in the state. The statement read in part, “As much as we are not concerned or interested in the reason for this invasion, which is unprecedented in the more than 160 years history of the church in this state, we are gravely worried and disturbed that worshippers were greatly frightened, worried, confused and completely disorganised by the presence of heavily armed security operatives in the church service thereby disrupting the worship of God’s people. “That the police jumped inside the church in a gestapo style when the service was in full session is reprehensible, primitive, and highly condemnable. We are at a great loss why the police decided to throw caution to the winds and completely ignore internationally acclaimed rules of engagement and civility in this matter.” The church said the sporadic gunshots outside the building sent worshippers scampering in different directions, signaling an abrupt and chaotic end of the service. But the Imo state government on Monday apologised to the public on how Uche Nwosu was arrested during a church service. In a statement by the Imo State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, the government said it holds in high esteem the Anglican Church and the church of God in general. The statement disclosed that the security threats posed by the development necessitated the manner Nwosu was arrested. The statement read “The Imo State Government is aware of the futile efforts by some people to whip up public sentiments against it over the arrest in an Anglican Church of Mr Uche Nwosu. “In this regard the arrest of Mr Nwosu within the church premises could have been avoided and therefore stands condemned. While the government regrets the manner the arrest was made, we wish to emphasise that since it was purely a security matter, the full reason such an action was taken will eventually unfold and perhaps guide the public better.” Meanwhile, Nwosu’s media aide, Chikezie Nwadike, stated that his principal didn’t spend the night in police custody. He also debunked the speculation that Nwosu was arrested in a church because he had refused to honour several police invitations extended to him. The aide challenged the police to produce proof that he was invited by the police before the invasion of the church. The statement read in part, “This is to inform the general public, friends and well-wishers, supporters and Sympathisers that Ugwumba Uche Nwosu, who was abducted by security agencies while observing Church service at St Peter’s Anglican Church Umunwokwe Village Eziama-Obaire Nkwerre LGA has regained his freedom and released unconditionally. He never spent a Night in their custody as every effort was put in place to get him out. “Recall the ugly incident that took place on December 26, 2021 at St Peter’s Anglican Church as security operatives swooped on him inside the church during the outing service of his mother’s burial and whisked him away amidst sporadic shootings and harassment of the congregation. “I have spoken with him and he extended his greetings to all of us out there.” He said the invasion of the church implied that the government of Governor Hope Uzodinma lacked respect for God. The Catholic Diocese of Orlu has condemned what they tag as a "Sad and traumatizing incident" the maner of arrest of the former Imo state governorship candidate and Rochas Okoroacha's son in law, Uche Nwaosu during a church service on sunday. In a statement signed by the Catholic Bishop of Orlu diocese, most Rev Augustine Ukwuoma condemned what he described as a disruption of public order and desecration of constitutionally protected place of woship. He made it clear thet these followed a series of disregard for the right of the people and their private properties in the state which has lead to many tragic death and burning of people's properties by State and non state Actors.

He was even lucky it was not the Catholic church, by now they would have started organizing a Black Mass like they did to Ohakim in 2010. Even so catholic dioceses where the first to condemn the act even before Anglican. Uzodinma himself knew he has stepped on a wrong toe |
