Nigerians have highest level of education in the US – Survey

Nigerian immigrants have the highest levels of education in Houston and in the United states of America in general, surpassing whites and Asians, according to a Census data bolstered by an analysis of 13 annual Houston-area surveys, the Houston Chronicle reports.

Experts claim this could be the result of Nigeria’s free education policy at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels, particularly in public schools.

David Olowokere, originally from Nigeria and the Chairman of Texas Southern University’s Department of Engineering Technologies, told Casimir that holding a Master’s degree just wasn’t good enough for his people back home. So he got a doctorate. His wife, Shalewa Olowokere, is a civil engineer and holds a Master’s degree.

According to a 2006 American Community Survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, 17 per cent of all Nigerians in the US hold a Master’s degree, four per cent hold a doctorate and 37 per cent have a bachelor’s degree. In comparison, eight per cent of the white population in the U.S. hold a Master’s degrees, one per cent hold a doctorate and 19 per cent have a bachelor’s degrees.

The Nigerian numbers are strikingly high, Roderick Harrison told Casimir. He is a demographer at the Joint Centre for Political and Economic Studies, a Washington D.C. think-thank that specialises in researching black issues.

However, Stephen Klineberg, a Sociologist at Rice University who conducts the annual Houston Area Survey, suspects the percentage of Nigerian immigrants with post-graduate degrees is higher than the Census data shows.

According to the latest Census data there are more than 12,000 Nigerians in Houston. This is a figure sociologists and Nigerian community leaders say is a gross undercount, as they believe the number is closer to 100,000.

Out of all the Nigerian immigrants Kleinberg reached in his random phone surveys in 1994 through 2007—a total of 45 households—40 per cent of them told him they had post-graduate degrees.

The reasons Nigerians have more post-graduate degrees than any other racial or ethnic group is largely due to the Nigerian society’s emphasis on mandatory and free education, Casimir reports.

Giving reasons for this trend, the Vice-Chancellor, University of Ilorin, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, explained that what was being witnessed in the US was a reflection of what was happening in Nigeria.

According to him, Nigeria has sufficient number of people with higher degrees at home given its status as the largest nation on the African continent.

And since education is an international commodity, he said that the excess supply often migrate to other parts of the world in search of greener pasture. He told THE PUNCH on the telephone that, “Nigeria has the highest number of the good just as well as the bad. At home, we don’t value what we have. That is why these people go abroad. A lot of these people want to come back home but they find it difficult to do so.”

On the implication of having highly qualified Nigerians in the US when there is gross scarcity of lecturers in Nigerian universities for instance, the VC said not everyone with a doctorate degree was necessarily qualified to be a good teacher in Nigeria.

He said, “It does not follow that if they come back to Nigeria that they will get good jobs. We have to do a thorough need analysis. Are these people qualified in the appropriate disciplines where we need lecturers in Nigeria? Those are the issues. So it may be convenient for these people to stay where they are.’’

The Vice-Chancellor, Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, Prof. Oye Ibidapo-Obe, said the population of Nigeria could be a major factor.

“Nigeria has the second largest population of blacks in the world. When a country is overpopulated, there is every tendency for people to migrate,’’ he said.

Ibidapo-Obe, a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos added, “Secondly, the economic situation of the country is another factor. Our economy cannot be compared to that of the United States and people are in search of good facilities and an economy that is up and going.”

There is brain-drain; students want a university that has an up-to-date equipment and facilities in place.

“Let’s face it, the education facilities in Nigerian universities are inferior to that of the US. Also, the level of preparation in terms of the rigour that goes on in Nigerian universities is very low. Students are trained to know what is in the book. The practical area is low,” he explained

We can give you loads and loads of disadvantages and even more reasons why you should not consider her at all. But I tell you one thing, no MAN BORN OF A WOMAN CAN TELL YOU WHO IS THE BEST WIFE FOR YOU, All we do is what I call - surmising.  Being educated does not mean that you will make a good wife and vice versa.

Ask yourself this question, WILL I STILL LOVE THIS LADY IN THE NEXT TWENTY YEARS IF CHRIST TARRIES, If you have good relationship with God the father, this is time to consult him and seek His face for He is the only one that knows your tomorrow. But if not, you can still initiate a relationship with him today. In any case, I wish you the best in your search for this missing rib.

I think maths is simpler because it follows a definite and systematic pattern which leads to one answer or solution.Thats why it is used as tool by scientists and engineers to provide solution to problems that face mankind.But law is all about logical and illogical arguments which solves no problems but confuses pple.

What level of mathematics are u talking about ? Mathematical Logic is more Delicate to handle. If u can not win a case in the mathematical court, then , u can not prove any theorem. Mathematics is all about ARGUMENT BASE ON LOGICS. So u have not given a good premises to debunk the fact that mathematics is more DIFFICULT but (I think) LAW is more voluminous.

To add to my earlier comment , I think when we talk about difficulty , we mean the discipline that is more involving to understand .Do u know that it can take U A WHOLE YEAR TO UNDERSTAND JUST A PAGE OF MATHEMATICAL LITERATURE (EVEN IF U ARE DOING MATHEMATICS IN ANY LEVEL). It is imperative to note that a GOOD MATHEMATICIAN CAN DO ANY COURSE IN THE GLOBE PROVIDED HIS MIND IS INTO IT, BUT THE CONVERSE IS NOT NECESSARILY TRUE.  I want to tell u that mathematics in  SECONDARY SCHOOL (SSCE/JAMB) , as far as am concern, is not MATHEMATICS AT ALL.  When u come to what mathematics is all about, MY FRIEND, IF U NO TAKE TIME, U GO WOUND OOOO.

Tell me , what is difficult in Law, u can only say that u have a lot of things to cover not that is difficult. If u tell me that u have a lot of material to cover than mathematics, then I can be tempted to agree but not to say that  is difficult. IS NOT DIFFICULT WHEN COMPARED TO MATHEMATICS.

Friends, is only one that has done mathematics in school will tell u that mathematics is not difficult (when I say mathematics, I don't mean , arithmetic u do in high/secondary school). May  be u want to rate the difficulty of mathematics base on what u have done in secondary school,  OHHH , come on, mathematics is MORE THAN THAT.

Now when we talk about mathematics, we have many areas. Consider the PURE mathematics that deals with complete abstraction (IS JUST LIKE SERVING GOD AND BELIEVING THAT GOD EXIST), u need what I call the mathematical FAITH to do that , ability to think outside the BOX and look beyond the sky. All these u do in an abstract setting. Law is a complete applied act, u see what is obtainable in the society and tow your premises in other to argue your point 'unbeatably'.
To this end, I make the following remark :

                                            MATHEMATICS IS MORE CHALLENGING TO UNDERSTAND WHEN COMPARED TO LAW.

Traditional marriage is the most important. Marriage is contracted as soon as the Father of the lady hands over the daughter to the man, and that is more regarded before God. Now, to let everybody know that u are now MARRIED  u can use the church as a means for that and that is what is called the CHURCH WEDDING. This can be done on a small-scale , Medium-scale, or Big-scale basis. Notice that no BIBLE BELIEVING CHURCH can arrange for the CHURCH WEDDING when the Traditional wedding has not been done.  TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE SUPASSES.

I rest my case here !

Just to add to what have been said already , I don't advise one to come to the United states to study as an undergraduate if ones parents is not a high class citizen in Nigeria. However, you can still come  over even if your parents is not well to do at all , but this time as a graduate student (that is,you are coming for Masters or Phd) provided you made a good result in your first degree WITHOUT ANY SHORT CUT, you understand ? (good result , I mean a CGPA of at least 4.00 ). THIS YOU CAN DO IN AN EASY WAY, WITH JUST A TRICK MANY PEOPLE DONT KNOW. BUT THE TRICK WORKS MORE FOR PHD STUDENTS.

In that way, you don't have to think much of the monetary aspect.  NOTICE THAT THE ONLY LANGUAGE IN THE STATES IS : 'I NEED TO PAY MY BILLS' IS A MUST FOR EVERYBODY. NO BOYCOTTING !

The word 'may' is my problem.

The prayer should be :  'God  touch FG to  meet to the demands of ASUU' and not that the strike be called off. If the strike is called off without meeting the demands of ASUU, I tell u fellow Nairalanders , the Problem still remains. I pray that the Problem be resolved once and for all. After playing around with the problem, i came out with the following result.

1. users of A and B : 300+60 = 360
2. At least one of the products : 1200-180 = 1120
3. At most one of the products : 120 + 60 + 240 = 420

I think this is good enough. Mathematics is FUN !

ast time I checked it wasn't angels that he saved. He went to save the humans who were already dead. Now you may not know it but in the Bible it was noted that it was humans not angels that he saved.

My dear friend, there are some truth u really need to agree with. Fine, Notice once again that the personalities Jesus went to preach to were angels NOT HUMAN BEINGS. I have PROOFS for that. The HELL here is derived from Tartarus (greek) and Tartaros (Latin) meaning a place of punishment and confinement for angels until the judgement. The fallen Angels sinned (cons. Gen 6:1-2) and they were confined to Hell (Tartarus)
It might interest u to  note that there are five compactments in the under world of which TARTARUS is one of them. Today people call this Tartarus Purgatory. But the fact is that Tartarus is not meant for we human beings , it is only meant for Fallen angels that rebelled against God.

The only place meant for Human beings are Hell fire and lake of Fire (these are also compactments under world). For now the soul that dies in sin , will go to Hell fire waiting for the resurrection of the body for the White Throne Jugdement (Read Revelation for more insight) after this judgement that soul is cast to the LAKE OF FIRE. So for now , we have ONLY two places to go to immediately we die - HEAVEN OR HELL FIRE no more, no less.

After Jesus died his body was in the grave but He went (quickened by the spirit of God) to preach to spirits in Prison- this means that He went to Tartarus to let the fallen angels know the plans of God.
