Just imagine what this team will do to any Nigerian economic problem whether emergency (like Ebola) or permanent (like poverty)? Again, just imagine any sector being discussed here (e.g. Security, Power & Energy, Health, Agriculture, Trade & Investments, Finance, Petroleum Resources, National Planning, etc) that will not warrant robust debate. Imagine the contributions of these people in any debate in that Federal Executive Council. This is what I called a Super Cabinet and only a person with "inner" eyes would see what I'm seeing. President Buhari promised that he is going to assemble the best team to actualize his visions for the country. With the team above, not to talk of the Substitutes and the reserves, this is another promise kept. And this is just the team A that has just been cleared by FIFA (Senate). Well I can only say this season promises to be an interesting one for Nigeria and Nigerians. And I believe we are going to get it right by God's grace going forward.

Oya any economic problem, bring it on, na we and you today. Who say Nigeria no go better? If no be say na yanga sef, I fit challenge any person to bring any team in the past wey fit challenge this our new Super Cabinet. Mind you, team B still dey there o!

God I pray make none of these team players never get injury o! grin grin grin

3 Common Bases for Change
1. Great reformers outperform others with respect to growth and stability.
2. Every situation is different but there is a common DNA in many of the reforms.
3. Best reforms are radical, deep and fast with respect to growth and stability.

When you get to Georgia, there are no bureaucracies like ministry of justice, ministry of trade and investment, there is only a window where an investor would present his passport and the next question is "where do you wish to open your bank account" and then in the next 20minutes a bank account is opened. - Nika Gilari

MarvellousGod:
Cool. But the list wasn't worth the whole delay, emphasis etc... I was not expecting to see any familiar name on the list! Thought he would bring totally new persons/saints....
But at last, still same old people! !
Anyway, may God give them the wisdom to discharge their duties diligently. . I hope to see some visible changes in Nigeria soon, Amen. ..
Actually, personally I wasn't expecting too much because the cabinet is going to be populated by Nigerians. Whether they are known or unknown is a question of personal opinion as well as their areas of expertise. Some of them might not been operating at big scene as expected but they have been involved in one way or the other in their various ways of contributing to national development. Dr Osagie Ehanire comes to mind in this category of people.

I don't think the delay is occasioned by the names, but by other parameters that are personal to the President alone. For instance, he was busy with most of the MDAs and the permanent secretaries, to be sure of the actual state of the ministries as to whether it corresponds to the handover that was given to him. You and I know that those permanent secretaries and heads of other departments and agencies would not spill the beans when the ministers are around for the fear of being sidelined. So, it's reasonable for him to seek them out when they don't have political heads.

When do we learn to believe in ourselves as Nigerians? I have seen some people discrediting this survey on the basis of partisanship. NOI Polls is a public policy research outfit that is second in terms of ranking in Africa. Most of these bodies involved in research can favourably compete with their counterparts anywhere in the world. One of the problems bedeviling us as a country is that we don't have verifiable data. Some people came to fill the vacuum and yet instead of appreciation, they are being lampooned. What a sorry state for the youth of this country? Well I don't blame them when their o'level was written for them, for their JAMB na 'runs' and for their projects in undergraduate na 'cut and paste'. So how do one expect them to value scholarship and intellectualism.

The Senate yesterday unveiled President Muhammadu Buhari’s second and final batch of nominees for confirmation as ministers. The president had said that the batch will be the last one, meaning that those with expectations of being part of Buhari’s cabinet would have to wait for another opportunity. Mr. James Ocholi (Kogi State)
A former National Deputy Legal Adviser of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), he has contested for the governorship ticket of the party in his state but lost to Abubakar Audu. He was also a governorship aspirant on the platform of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in the state.

Muhammad Bello (Adamawa)
He is the former Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria. The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Adamawa State rejected his nomination. Speaking to Daily Trust in Yola, the State Organizing Secretary of the party, Ahmad Lawan said the nomination of Bello could affect the chances of the party in future elections. "He is not a card carrying member of the party. It is unfair to nominate him as minister. ‘We Kidnapped Falae To Get Money To Celebrate Salah’ -Suspects

The Department of State Security Service (DSS) paraded the two suspected kidnappers of Olu Falae in front of the press today. The two kidnappers, Abdullahi Usman and Babawuro Kato, confessed to their crime saying they did it to have money to celebrate Salah.

The suspects made their statements while answering questions from journalists at a press conference in the DSS Headquarters.

According to Abdullahi Usman, he initiated the plan for money to celebrate Salah, but regretted that one of his other accomplices made away with the N5 million random paid by the family Falae’s release.

Babawuro Kato, who drove the victim on motorcycle from one location to another, also corroborated these statements but said that he did not know the identity of the captive and he was not part of the abduction.

Speaking on behalf of the DSS, Abdullahi Garba said that their investigation has revealed that the abductors were merely criminals, and that the kidnapping was not because of Falae’s political status or his prominence in the Yoruba community as speculated by some.

Mr. Garba maintained that the abductors collected a N5 million ransom and were arrested at Zebra Hotel along Ganaja Road, Lokoja in Kogi State.

He assured Nigerians that efforts are being intensified to ensure that all those associated with this criminal act will be brought to justice.

Buhari Receives Auditor-General’s Report On Drying Up Of Lake Chad

President Muhammadu Buhari has reiterated the commitment of his administration to offering effective leadership in the fight against insurgency and other environmental issues in the Sahel region.

The President said this while receiving the Auditor-General of the Federation’s report on the drying up the Lake Chad in the Presidential Villa.

Nigeria, alongside Cameroun and Niger had set up the audit committee to find solution to the problem. Having decried the negative impact of the drying lake on Nigeria, he promised to ensure that the recommendations in the report are considered for implementation.

He traced the history of the formation of the Lake Chad Basin and the wisdom of the founding fathers, and urged the National Assembly to domesticate the Lake Chad Basin Water Charter if the problem must be solved.

He promised to ensure equitable water resources management by paying the marching grant of 850 million naira to compliment the 100 million naira from each of the states bordering the Lake Chad.

He, however, queried the Auditor-General for missing out the aspect of the report where the Federal Government spent five million dollars to tackle the environmental problems in the Lake Chad.

The President commended the efforts of the governors of Borno, Bauchi, Kano, Jigawa and Plateau states, promising to strengthen the platform to ensure sustainable and equitable water resources management of the Lake Chad Basin.

Sometimes I wonder about the future of this great country, but I can only sigh because given the present state of the youth, we may have to pray to God for guidance. The report is about drying up of Lake Chad and it was even commissioned by all governments of Lake Chad Basin and yet we have youths who are here arguing on the constitutionality of the President for asking for the reports he commissioned in the first place. This report is not about the financial transactions of the country but a commissioned international one for a specific purpose - drying up of Lake Chad.
PoliticsRe: Senate Committee Suspends Petition Against Amaechi by razid: 4:18pm On Oct 12, 2015
I actually wanted to refrain from commenting on this ministerial list brouhaha. Sometimes we forget history so soon. Just like Saraki, Amaechi belongs to the caucus of nPDP in APC. Not only that, have we also forgotten that Saraki handed over the NGF chairmanship to Amaechi. Sometimes before Saraki withdrew from running for the presidency in 2011 PDP primaries, it was rumoured that he wanted to choose Amaechi as his vice.

So I've always laughed when I see people thinking that Saraki's Senate will be the one to turn against Amaechi. How are we sure that Amaechi didn't have a hand in Saraki's senate presidency coming from the same caucus in the party? Therefore, sometimes one need to be wary of interfering in the affairs of these politicians. Aregbesola almost lost his life during his tussle with Oyinlola in Osun State. Right now, the two of them are in the same party and according to some sources, Aregbesola is even in support of him as a ministerial candidate from Osun. My point is we shouldn't stress ourselves much on these politicians. They know how to deal with themselves.

Nicely written analysis. So well constructed, nicely put and quite objective. With guys like you, Gbawe, Obiagelli, Passingshot, modath, Obailola, hungerbad, etc... it's safe to say that the apc attracts majorly brilliant minds!
Those people you quoted are not necessarily APC members, they are just patriotic Nigerians who want the best for their country. It's just that their vision coincides with that of APC at this point in time. I'm very sure if APC deviates from that vision, they won't hesitate to give APC the necessary dose of their other sides.

To me, it's very unfortunate that we find ourselves in this kind of quagmire that if you have a dissenting opinion you are termed "PDP". If on the other hand, you find something good to say about the present administration, people are quick to term you "APC". To me, it doesn't show substance but pettiness.

@OP

Your candor is admirable.

Your post is however based on the faulty premise that Nigeria is a nation and that some how something has gone wrong that is now some how 'killing it'.

Much as i would have wanted to be wrong, the indisputable reality is that Nigeria is not a nation, has never been a nation and until the proponents of 'one Nigeria' face up to this reality and make an effort to actually address the structural deficits that plague the conglomeration of different tribal and ethnic groups that occupy the space called Nigeria, that process of nation building can never begin.

The wounds that you see and interprete as Nigeria dying, have always been there. They've been plastered over but nobody made any attempt to heal the wounds. Read again the writings of the founding fathers you've mentioned, but this time very carefully. Some hoped we could become a nation but be reminded that it is also from these same founding fathers that we got things like 'Nigeria is only a geographical expression' or that this 'nation' belongs to some more than others. . .

My idealistic friend, in the real world wounds that are left untreated fester. And no matter how much we long to sit down together, hold hands and sing kumbaya, festering wounds that remain untreated become toxic and can lead to untimely death that could have been prevented . . .
I totally agree with you that Nigeria is not a nation. Two things make a nation according to a school of thought - homogenuity and leadership. Nigeria can never be a nation by the first category as its composition makes that impossible. However, if given the chance, Nigeria can be a nation if we have a credible leadership that can galvanise each of the component together. For now, that leader is still elusive, not that it is not possible but we shouldn't shy away from the fact that we are yet to have a leader that will selflessly bring out the best of the various components that make the entity called Nigeria. My friend, who knows, you might be the leader we have been waiting for. grin grin grin

Another thing is that we have not had a national catastrophy that could bring out the nationalism in all of us. Have you ever wondered why when you are watching a football match and Nigeria scores and all of us regardless of tongue and faith explode in euphoria? It's because we have a common enemy that need to be defeated at that point in time. It doesn't matter if Emmanuel Emenike or Ahmed Musa or Gbolahan Salami that scored the goal. All that matter is an enemy needed to be defeated and that is all. I have never seen a situation whereby a Yoruba person will say he would not celebrate a goal because it is scored by an Igbo person or an Igbo person would not celebrate a goal because it was scored by an Hausa man. It is because at that point in time, we are united by purpose, our national pride is at stake. I have been in a group of people that represented Nigeria at a point in time. We all worked together to make Nigeria proud. At that time, tongue and faith didn't matter, we all had each other's back and the dignity of Nigeria was what mattered to us. So maybe because we have not had a national calamity in the real sense, our nationalism is yet to manifest. Remember America during 9/11, they left all their immediate problems and united to fight the common enemy. They didn't look for how many whites were killed or how many blacks died; or how many Christians or how many Muslims. To them, America was under attack and every America should see that as a threat.

Recently, many Nigerians got killed in Mecca, what were our reactions? Some Nigerians are getting killed day by day in the North East, how do we react? Some people died recently in Onitsha as a result of petrol tanker explosion, did it matter to us? No, because we see it as a regional thing. I tell you if tomorrow a country like Benin Republic invades Nigeria and God forbid kill many people in Lagos, nobody will tell those who are shouting secession to fall in line. As far as I don't pray for a national calamity, let's just hope that we will find a leader that will galvanise and bring the best in each of us. Thank you.

PoliticsRe: Tribalism And Religion Fanaticism Is Killing This Nation by razid:
@OP, thanks for this beautiful thought of yours. I actually wanted to do this yesterday, but I was let down by my emotions. I watched a documentary of Nigeria's independence and how our forefathers fought for it as if their lives depended on it. I listened to Pa Awolowo, Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, and Dr Nnamdi Azikwe. They were quite awesome to listen to. You could feel their passions, their dedications, their visions, and their patriotism from their speech. They had one common goal and in spite of their outward differences, they had that elusive UNITY OF PURPOSE. I encouraged all of us to search for some of those pre-independence footage to get a glimpse.

To be candid, I always laugh whenever I hear or read about the fact that we are forced together. Nobody forced us together, if Lord Lugard didn't do it, one way or the other, the force of nature would have brought us together even without firing a single bullet. A child does not choose the circumstance of his/her birth. There are some countries that could be termed "accidents of nature" just like ours, viz: United States of America, Australia, Liberia et al. Their circumstances of birth were not palatable, but they have moved on beyond that and none of them is dwelling any longer on their dark beginnings. The earlier we realise this the better.

Just like you, in the early 80's, I remember my good friends Godwin and Victor of Igbo tribe and Muttalib of Hausa. We were very fond of each other then because all our parents are friends. Nobody bothered about religion or tribe. Even the Christians among us would tell their parents not to cook pork because of some Muslims among us and the parents would oblige. Such was the love among us in those days. As it is now, if perchance all of us have the chance to come together once again, I'm not sure such love would ever exist among us. That is the consequence of bad politicking by our politicians. They have succeeded in turning all of us to pawns to further their own interests.

Are we not even thinking at all? The politicians will use us as foot soldiers whenever they are not pleased with the establishment and immediately they get what they want, the narrative changes. Imagine some of them that were shouting about "salary jamboree" before the election, do you hear from them again? I don't blame them, I can only blame a poor fellow who has been conditioned to hate another poor fellow like himself due to circumstances of his birth.

PoliticsBuhari’s Tall Order And The Wailing Wailers By Rudolf Ogoo Okonkwo by razid(op): 3:44pm On Oct 01, 2015
I read this and enjoyed it.
The first hundred days in office for President Muhammadu Buhari has since passed. The next landmark in the horizon will be one year in office. By the end of this week, the potential ministers must have been named. The argument about who deserves to be there and who should not have been named will last for the next few weeks. Once the ministers are sworn in, the new government should settle down to deliver on election promises.

In an ideal world, that is where we should be now. But the buzz out there is totally different. Something happened to Nigeria on its way to transitioning from Jonathan to Buhari. It is something that has never happened before- at least not up to this degree. To be able to understand what happened, we need to look at a similar story in another country.

When the U. S. Supreme Court decided on the Florida contested election results in 2000 and awarded the Presidential election to George W. Bush, even though Al Gore won the popular vote, it created distrust in the minds of a large segment of Americans, especially those on the left. Many of the dissatisfied Americans considered the George W. Bush’s presidency illegitimate until September 11, 2001 terrorist attack brought all Americans together.

But the bad blood did not go away. When Bush decided to attack Iraq as part of his global war on terror, it widened the gap between him and those who felt his presidency was illegitimate. His opponents mounted greater campaign against his war, his policies and, to some extent, his whole presidency even when he won reelection in 2004. Towards the end of his term, when the whole world economy collapsed under his watch, his opponents were quick to gloat, “We told you so.”

Then enters Barack Obama. The primary reason he won was because America wanted to move as far away from George W. Bush as they could. And nobody in the 2008 contest represented that distance from Bush the way Obama did. If Bush was a C- student, Obama was an A-student. If Bush was inarticulate, Obama was eloquent. The change took place but a new set of bad blood was unleashed as some adherents of the old order put up resistance. They also borrowed a book from the anti-Bush group by trying to delegitimize the Obama presidency. It was in vogue until Obama won reelection in 2012. That sucked up the energy of the opposition.

When the then Vice President Jonathan inherited the presidency following the death of former President Umaru Yar’Adua, bad blood developed within some sectors in Nigeria, especially in the north where some felt that Yar’Adua did not have the chance to complete his term and so would have preferred another of their own to complete Yar’Adua’s term. They constituted an opposing force to Jonathan’s presidency. Faced with such opposition, President Jonathan failed to rise up to the occasion. He allowed the opposition to define him. As if that was not bad enough, he molded himself according to the definition of his opponents.

Fast forward to today. The only reason why Buhari defeated Jonathan was because in the most important things that mattered to Nigerians on election eve, he was the candidate furthest away from Jonathan. Buhari’s defeat of Jonathan in the 2015 election has created an animosity with the astute supporters of Jonathan now in stern opposition to Buhari’s presidency. They have vowed to subject Buhari to the same kind of opposition and criticism they felt Jonathan received from the Buhari supporters. They have defined the Buhari presidency even before he appointed his ministers. The only thing left is to see if Buhari will fulfill the prophesies of those who have defined him, just like Jonathan did, or whether he will rise above it, just like Obama did and present his own narrative. The choice is Buhari’s.

All these may look messy, but in the final analysis, they are all good for the growth of our democracy. When the citizenry, no matter the motivation, holds their elected representatives accountable, the nation benefits. All cries by those in power that these facets of a vibrant democracy are distractions should be ignored. They are usually complaints of politicians who are not prepared for governance. The noise of the opposition should not stop a determined government with concrete ideas and plans on how to build a nation. For both the government and the opposition, propaganda stops when confronted with performance.

The silver lining in all of these is that, if sustained, they can crystal into a way that Nigeria can develop politics that goes beyond personalities to one that deals with philosophical and ideological issues and differences. It may have started with the deafening enquiry into where appointees hail from, what religion they subscribe to and how tall they are. But over time, it has the potential to focus on more substantial issues. But this will not happen if unprepared and over-pampered political actors stunt the present line of inquiry.

With Nigeria’s long history as a dysfunctional nation, it isn’t realistic to expect a Kenyan kind of transformation from Kenyatta to Moi to Kibaki and back to a Kenyatta. In the last 50 years, Nigeria has been all over the place, picking up worms and germs along the way. There is no doubt that Nigeria needed a return to some form of fundamentals to be able to take any kind of linear jump.

And the fundamentals in question are not brain surgery, nanotechnology or rocket science. They are simple things like: the commonwealth belongs to all Nigerians and not just the privileged few; that government service is not another word for self enrichment; that instituting merit ultimately lifts everybody up while mediocrity does the exact opposite; that there are consequences for bad behaviors irrespective of who is in the wrong; and that every life matters in that country of ours.

A transition from Obasanjo to Yar’Adua failed to advance the nation primarily because Yar’Adua was not healthy enough to show what he could do. The transition from Yar’Adua to Jonathan on the superficial level was a big leap. But when it came to what really matters in core indexes of good governance, Jonathan did not try, and he did not pretend to try, and worst of it all, he did not give a damn that he did not try. His term in office was a series of retrogressive steps. Once back, there was no possible way of jumping forward without efforts to fix what was wrong from the onset.

Buhari’s administration is not going to give Nigeria the 21st century government that some young ones wish- not that Jonathan’s government was on the verge of pushing Nigeria into that glorious era. The only hope there is for anyone who wants to be hopeful is that Buhari’s government may create the environment where that 21st century government can emerge. If it does come, it will not come easy- not by command, not by prayer, and not by blaming those who have left the scene. If it comes, it will come from the sweat of those who are deeply committed to making sacrifices so that Nigeria will finally find its way into the league of nations where the future for the young ones are assured.

That is a tall order but one that is now squarely on the feet of President Muhammadu Buhari to realize or to bungle. And he must be prepared to do it irrespective of what the opposition is saying, doing or thinking.

Some people like to deny the truth. I was watching NTA Network News yesterday, the people of Enugu are all clamouring that the present Enugu Electricity Distribution Company should not be tampered with because they now enjoy power more than ever before. Even their market women are not left out. Every one was supporting EEDC because they now enjoy almost constant electricity. And yet, some people will still come here to hate, lampoon, and .......

I actually watched the excitement on the face of the newscaster of the Business news segment of Channels News @ 10 yesterday. Ordinarily, we don't need to make a song and dance about this kind of issue. These are natural phenomena regardless of who occupies the seat of the President. But when it became one of the metrics that are being used to pestle the administration, I don't blame those who are happy.

Sometimes we love to hate and at other times we hate to love. But when we hate or love just for the sake of it, is what makes us who we are - a hating personality or a loving one.
