Inside a foil sachet, which looks more at home in a fast-food restaurant, an exact dose of antiretroviral medicine is helping to protect newborn babies against the threat of infection from their HIV-positive mothers.
Their babies must be given antiretroviral (ARV) medication within 24 hours of birth, otherwise the risk of the infection being passed from mother to child during pregnancy, labour, delivery or during breast-feeding is around 45%.
According to the UN, mother-to-child transmission in the developing world creates 260,000 new infections in children every year

The programme is enabling newborn babies to take their medicines efficiently - via a pouch that looks just like the small ketchup sachets you get at fast food restaurants. Only in this case, they are filled with antiretroviral drugs, which protect against HIV.
Dr Robert Malkin, from Duke University, who led the design of the pouch and the research into its use in Ecuador, says some countries are better equipped than others to make use of it.

Four bridesmaids were killed and seven other people were seriously injured when a hen party's limousine was destroyed by a hit-and-run drunk driver in New York.

The group, who were on a wineries tour, had just left a vineyard when a red pick up truck ploughed into the side of their vehicle at 5.30pm on Saturday in New York’s wine region in Long Island.

The girl’s limo had been making a u-turn when the collision happened.

"The pickup truck was halfway through the limo," said witness Lynne Lulfs.

"We saw bodies hanging out of the left side of the car. They looked like young girls. It was just arms, and heads and hair."

The bride and another member of the hen party were left in a critical condition, while the limo driver, three other occupants and the Dodge truck driver were also hurt.

Three of the group died at the scene and the fourth died after being taken to the hospital.

According to the fire department (UK), members tried using liquid soap and oil for ten minutes, but couldn't get the Jimma out.

The IFD wrote: 'Using a tool that cuts brake pedals on cars, firefighters were able to make several substantial cuts in the rim that then allowed them to use the spreaders to further open the rim.

'It took firefighters over an hour to get the rim removed.

The dog’s airway was never compromised and the dog appeared otherwise ok.'

Emmie became obsessed with dogs after enduring years of mental and physical abuse from bullies at school.

A couple of hours ago, a gun man carrying an AK-47 with 30-round magazine opened fire at the glass door of a military recruiting center in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Then the gunman, who according to a law enforcement official was driving in a rented silver Ford Mustang convertible, moved on to his next target more than seven miles away: a Naval reserve center. There, he rammed into a gate at some point during his shooting rampage (where he killed 4 Marines and was eventually killed by police, a U.S. official said. He has been identified as Mohammad Youssuf Abdulazeed 24yrs.

Authorities haven't released details yet about where at the centers the victims were shot or how the gunman gained access.

This bizarre picture shows the majestic bird of prey locked in an intense aerial battle with two seagulls.
The once-in-a-lifetime nature shot was captured by David Canales, a recent graduate from the University of San Antonio, Texas who lives in Anchorage, Alaska.
The eagle seems to have grabbed one gull in his claws which can exert around 800 psi (pounds per square inch) of pressure.
The other gull appears to be fighting the bird of prey, but his beak is a small match for the eagle.

The Los Angeles home of US singer Chris Brown has been raided and ransacked by three masked men who locked his aunt in a closet, according to police.
The R&B star was not at his home at the time of robbery, which took place in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Officials said the suspects, who were armed with handguns, got away from the Tarzana property with an unknown amount of money and some personal items.

Brown or his representatives have yet to comment on the matter.

“I was warned and warned by doctors to stop drinking and I didn't. There’s no higher price to pay than the one I'm paying now.

Doctors have told her she is not fit enough for a transplant and there is nothing they can do to save her. She is expecting to be admitted to hospital any day to begin end-of-life care.

Oskar Groening, known as the "bookkeeper of Auschwitz", was sentenced to four years in prison by a German court.
The 94-year-old former guard at the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz was convicted of being an accessory to the murder of at least 300,000 Jews.
He was responsible for counting the belongings confiscated from prisoners and had admitted "moral guilt".

His lawyers said he did not facilitate genocide, but prosecutors argued that he had helped the camp run smoothly.
