Actually, those military and paramilitary checkpoints have been there since the war between Biafra and Nigeria. It was not the case before the war. These were the normal military mop up checkpoints during and after firefights... What happened was that at the end of the war, Gowon was battling with his conscience and tried forcing normality back in the East even if halfhearted. THe SE has been under military subversive regimes of extortion for decades. It just got worse recently. I remember my visit to SE over 4yrs ago, the number of check points was like a war zone even when it was the most peaceful region then.

If the true Government of SE say their citizens should stay at home, I see no reason the Police at SE should not relax at their office since there is absence of crimes if people stay home.

So in honesty, citizens are kidnapping people in order to see food to eat? and they care called kidnappers. Seems to me that some bandits are kidnapping people to get money to buy homes or cars while others are now kidnapping in order to see food to eat.
