Suspected Fulani herdsmen, yesterday, killed Tamgbo Ogueji, a member of the traditional rulers’ cabinet at Eke community in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State. The deceased, aged 85, was allegedly shot in his house in the early hours over an undisclosed issue. President-General, Eke Town Union, Mr. Anthony Enu, said the community was irked and the youths restive. He said: “Last year, the same Fulani herdsmen killed two of our brother, Matthew Aniugo and Chiagha Chigbo, in their farms. The town is boiling with anger now. “We have reported the matter to the Police. We are calling on all relevant authorities to prevail on these Fulani herdsmen to ensure justice for our people.” All efforts to get the reaction from the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, proved abortive as he did not respond to calls and SMS to his mobile phone. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/03/fulani-herdsmen-kill-village-chief-in-enugu/

ABEOKUTA—Magistrate Martins Akinyemi of an Abeokuta Magistrate’s Court, yesterday, ordered a 24-year-old man, Michael Oyejide, remanded in Ibara Prison custody for allegedly raping his 18-year-old friend, Morenike Ajayi, to death. The prosecutor, Cpl Moshood Hammer, told the court that the accused and one other at large, committed the offence on January 8, at Ijeja in Abeokuta, Ogun State. He said: “Around 8p.m., Oyejide, alias MI, celebrated his birthday at Adigbe and some ladies were invited. Later at night, the accused and one other got the victim, who is also a friend, drunk. “The accused and his friend took the victim to his house at Ijeja and raped her to death.” He said they pretended to be sympathizers and rushed her to the hospital, where she was confirmed dead on arrival. “The management of the hospital reported the case to the Police, which led to Oyejide’s arrest,” Hammed said. The Prosecutor argued that the offence contravened Sections 516, 357 and 358 of the Criminal Laws of Ogun, 2006. The accused, whose plea was not taken by the court, is facing a two-count of rape and murder. Akinyemi adjourned the case to June 5, pending the Director of Public Prosecution, DPP’s advice, for further hearing on the matter. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/03/man-24-allegedly-rapes-friend-to-death/

The global conflict prevention organization, International Crisis Group (ICG), has named the outgoing governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola, as one of seven outstanding personalities worldwide to be honoured with its annual awards for 2015. The Brussels-based think tank, in a media release Thursday, says Mr. Fashola is being conferred with the Stephen J. Solarz Award “for his commitment to resolving social, economic and security challenges in one of the world’s most challenging urban environments.” Other awardees include Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Group, who is being recognized for “his visionary reshaping of private sector initiatives to promote peace, human rights and sustainable development” and former UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Sadako Ogata, who was chosen for her “exemplary efforts to prevent conflict and mass atrocities, alleviate suffering during the Balkan crisis, and protect refugees worldwide.” Two Tunisians, President Béji Caïd Essebsi and Nahdha Party leader, Rached Ghannouchi, were both chosen for their “unwavering dedication to pluralism, inclusion and compromise during Tunisia’s democratic transition.” Others to be honoured are the former Italian foreign minister Emma Bonino for her “tireless role in deescalating tensions and promoting peace” in several countries, and former Australian foreign minister, Gareth Evans, who passionately promoted the principle of Responsibility to Protect (R2P) and also headed the International Crisis Group as its pioneer president. Announcing this year’s awards at the ICG’s headquarters in Brussels, Jean-Marie Guéhenno, the organization’s president, said: “Each award goes to a pioneer of peace, to a relentless fighter for the improvement of people’s lives, to someone who has built bridges, believed in change and mobilized others in the name of justice”. The 2015 awards will be presented at a gala in New York on October 26, marking the 20th anniversary of the International Crisis Group. Previous recipients of the group’s annual awards have included former US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton; former Brazilian president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva; Liberian president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf; the Somali peace and democracy activist, Shukri Ismail; and the Afghan women and human rights advocate, Sima Samar.. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/181929-fashola-tunisian-president-others-win-international-crisis-groups-2015-awards.html
