I am telling you that the issue of North against the National Conference is over; we now say we are ready anytime the conference is convened. In fact we said clearly that in the event Nigeria breaks up, the North will remain one and Abuja will remain our capital. In any situation, we are viable are tired of being insulted. But before the break up will happen, we want to be there at the Sovereign National Conference. We should not be taken for a ride and we have removed the roadblock and declared that we will participate. curled from his interview with naija pundit. http://www.naijapundit.com/news/north-ll-retain-abuja-if-nigeria-breaks-up-junaid |

In 2010, Techcrunch broke the news that was going to release a "Like" button for the whole darn Internet. Now, TechCrunch has learned Facebook is considering a "Hate" button as well. According to Facebook's S-1 filing, users are now generating 2.7 billion Likes and Comments per day. With the Hate button, Facebook expects to at least double that. The S-1 noted "popular Pages on Facebook include Lady Gaga, Disney, and Manchester United, each of which has move than 20 million Likes." Many inside the company think the Hates could easily top that. When the original Like button was announced, Mark Zuckerberg made a bold prediction there would be over 1 billion Likes across the web in just the first 24 hours. Sources at Facebook say Mark is estimating 2 billion Hates on the first day. Facebook studies have shown the sad fact that people hate things on the internet http://gistmi..com/2012/04/facebook-considers-adding-hate-button.html?m=1 |
Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, has offered to teach some courses in the post-graduate school at the Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti. Fayemi said this on Saturday in Ado-Ekiti at the 17th convocation lecture of the institution. The governor said he had started discussing with the vice chancellor of the university and the Department of Political Science on his readiness to impart knowledge to the students. He said, “Apart from occupying the position of the Visitor of this University, I also want to play a more active role. Many will recall my campaign promise to teach in the university. “I have been in discussion with the school on plans to start a graduate course in my field of Peace and Conflict Studies. So very soon, don’t be surprised if you see me in your class.” Fayemi, who holds doctorate degree in War Studies from the King’s College, University of London had earlier lectured at the Police Training College. “I am not unaware that the major complaints of public institutions centre on inadequate funding. While this is true, it would however be unacceptable to this government should the Ekiti State University be attracted to the temptation of using this as an excuse for failure to meet its obligations as required,” he added. Also at the event, the Vice-President of Ghana, Dr. John Mahama, challenged Nigeria to use its abundant human and natural resources to lead other African countries to economic prosperity. The Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation, Dr. Kandeh Yumkella; and former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Tekena Tamuno, were also conferred with honorary doctorate degrees of the university. www.channelstv.com/home/2012/04/01/governor-fayemi-offers-to-lecture-at-state-university/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |

There’s been quite a bit of buzz about Beni American University, Africa’s most recent online education startup, with its self-proclaimed mission of pioneering boundless learning. During the week, I got the brain behind this project, Gossy Ukanwoke, to answer some questions about the purpose of this initiative, the issues surrounding it, and how they plan to make it work. Hailed in various online circles as Africa’s Mark Zuckerberg, Gossy founded the Students Circle Network in 2010 – an educational social network for college and high school students where they get access to course resources, live teacher help, scholarship offers, study groups and many more students services for free. Beni American University is his latest effort, find out more about it after right after the break. Techloy: Aright Gossy, so tell us, what is Beni American University all about? Ukanwoke: Beni American University is a forward looking African startup that is bringing quality education to every African youth, adult or teenager who wants to acquire a post secondary diploma or degree. In 2011 alone, over 500,000 students in Nigeria who were willing and able to afford a post secondary education were deprived because of over crowded institutions and depreciating infrastructure. We’ve seen a lot of success with Students Circle Network ( a free learning social network for students) project. Many students from the West African region now hope that they can gain certificates and diplomas by taking free courses on our network, and we decided to create Beni American University to fill this need. We are therefore building a 21st Century university with strong emphasis on technology, web 2.0 and entrepreneurship – a university that is not limited by time, location, age, gender, race, color or belief. Techloy: Do you not wonder if this idea hasn’t come before it’s time, in this region? Considering the presence of a number of factors ranging from the dearth of tech infrastructure and access to broadband to society’s “university degree” stereotype and innate suspicion of online initiatives. Will this initiative not require massive sensitisation/ publicity/education not only online, but also offline? Ukanwoke: I have heard about ideas that have come before their time, but I do not think this is one. The time is right, the need is there, and the enthusiasm in the market is high. We understand the issue of infrastructure and we are working with key partners to ensure we create a soft landing for our students as they start to enroll. On the issue of stereotypes, we are working on sensitization campaigns as well as taking steps in our academic process to address the stereotype. Techloy: How exactly does this new form of learning work? What is your execution model? Ukanwoke: We are running a Hybrid System - 70% Online, 30% offline. Our classes, Lectures, Instructionals, Quizzes, Tests, Assignments, and Projects will be done and assessed online via our learning platform that is accessible via the web and mobile. Our Midterm Examinations, Final Examinations and Admissions Interviews, when needed required, will be conducted offline and face to face respectively. We are also speaking with a few high schools across the country to be our test centers. Our students can use their facilities to take their final and midterm examinations. Techloy: From the business angle, who’s backing this and what resources are they bringing to the table? And Financials? How much is all this costing? Are you expecting funding, and from what sources? Is BAU for profit? If not, how will this venture be sustainable and scalable going forward? Ukanwoke: These details will be made public when we become a public company. At this point in time, BAU is doing non profit work but we hope to be profitable soon. We are working towards making this sustainable scalable – this is the reason why we are in business in the first place. Techloy: Do you have technology partners? Ukanwoke: We have ongoing discussions with a couple of global and local companies. We are in talks with Encipher, which are almost concluded. Techloy: What about partners in the education sector? Ukanwoke: We may not be able to discuss this fully until we conclude working modalities with these institutions. Securing institutional partnerships are a very cumbersome and lengthy process. However locally, we are working with an international/Swedish NGO that has been educating Nigerians – women and children in the eastern Nigeria. They are providing the infrastructure for us to reach these people. Their students will be transferring to BAU. Techloy: Government/public sector involvement? Ukanwoke – We are hoping to reach the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports. We can have extensive discussions with them on our plans and how the government can aid us on this journey. It is important to note that we are not here to force change on the system — rather we want to introduce a quality alternative that will show that things can change. Techloy: What kinds of certification will you be awarding, and how relevant are they/will they be in the Nigerian labour market? Ukanwoke: Prior to Bachelor Degrees, we are starting off with Associate Degrees and other professional certifications. An associate degree is on the same level with the Higher National Diploma. Via our working plan with our educational partners, an A.D from BAU puts you on course for a BSc from those institutions. We are also providing professional certification that is globally recognized and accepted by Nigerian institutions. Techloy: How much will this model of education cost participants, and how does it compare to the cost of current models? Ukanwoke: Costs are minimal at best. We are less expensive compared to international alternatives. We are less expensive compared to local alternatives (Private Universities). Our quality is on par with some of the best institutions in the world and that is why they are supporting the vision we are carrying with this. Details of this in price and numbers will be found on our web pages when they become public. Techloy: What are the entry requirements for intending students? Ukanwoke: For a start, proficiency in English Language. Minimum of 6 credits in WASSCE or equivalent examinations. e.g NECO . These are the international standards when students from this region are applying to schools in Asia, Europe and United States. These details will be found on our web pages as soon as we launch. Techloy: What are your projections as to the levels of adoption and your progress over the next few years? Ukanwoke: We have projected to go full scale in the next 4-5 years. However before that, we will be running on about 20% – 30 % of our full capacity as an institution. Techloy: Are there any other research based insights on the future of Nigerian and global education that you’d like to share at this time? Ukanwoke: BAU is coming at the right time. Technology is gradually taking its place in the education sector in Nigeria. See what Google is doing. The scramble for Africa is currently on in this sector. Africa will mature in education in the next 10 – 15 years in the way it is currently in advanced economies like United States. Degrees will have less value in a few years. It will be more of what you know and can do and the appropriate certifications to go with it. At this time, a Masters degree has same value as the current Bachelor’s degree. http://m.facebook.com/beniamerican?id=303119706377277&_rdr |

The Lagos State governor, Babatunde Fashola, got a rude shock from his principal and predecessor, Bola Tinubu, Wednesday after he tried to make a case for disgruntled party members. Mr. Fashola, one of the speakers at the 4th annual Bola Tinubu Colloquium, an event organized to mark the former Lagos State governor's 60th birthday; said that he had been asked by the lower cadre members of the party to prevail on the celebrant to dispense "justice equally" to all members. Mr. Tinubu refused "If there's no partiality, you cannot be governor yourself," he told Mr. Fashola, adding that he had not regretted choosing him as governor. "Ask them not to give me the task, that I'll not be able to deliver," said Mr. Tinubu. "What I'd done consistently in the past, why would I want to change at 60? "I've succeeded with that behaviour and sorry I'll not deviate from it," he added. Earlier, the chairman of the occasion, Emeka Anyaoku, had called on Nigeria to return to true federalism if it must make progress. "I do believe that a true, rather than our current unitarist federalism, will better promote peace, stability, and development in Nigeria," said Mr. Anyaoku, a former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth. "There can be no doubt that Nigeria was making progress in national development in the early years of its independence when it practiced true federalism of four regions with more extensive powers deployed from the centre to the regions. "Those were the days of the significant export of groundnuts, hides and skins, and the tin ore from the North; of cocoa from the West; of rubber from the Mid-West; and palm produce and coal from the East of Nigeria," said Mr. Anyaoku. http://premiumtimesng.com/news/4447-tinubu_fashola_clash_at_birthday_colloquium.html |

The Federation Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC) plans to spend about N25million to acquire IPADs and tablet PCs for to its members. Although the plan had been on the cards since last year, Premium Times gathered that the actual purchase and distribution of the tablet computers to each of the over 100 members of the committee had to be delayed because some members had other preferences. During the meeting of the committee held last week in Abuja, it was gathered that members drew the attention of the Minister of State for Finance, Yerima Ngama, who is also the FAAC Chairman, to their resolution at the meeting of the Commissioners of Finance Forum to the effect that some of them would prefer PC tablets to the IPAD, which appears to be the fad among chief executives in Nigeria. Mr. Ngama was reported to have asked members to forward the details of their preferences to the FAAC secretariat to facilitate the award of the contract for the supply of the equipment, which is expected to facilitate effective discharge of members’ responsibilities. But, observers describe the plan as wasteful, as most of the intended beneficiaries do not need IPAD from FAAC to function effectively. “Members of the FAAC do not need an IPAD to function effectively,” the President, Niger Delta Budget Monitoring Group (NDEBUMOG), George-Hill Anthony, said. “Members of the FAAC are made up Commissioners of Finance and Accountants General of the 36 states of the federation as well as those in charge of finance in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). They also include representatives of the revenue agencies like the Customs, Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). “Their responsibility is just to represent their constituencies in the sharing of the monthly allocations. All they require to discharge that function, including their transport, feeding, accommodation and general welfare, are already taken care of. All facilities to assist them discharge their duties are provided, including, if necessary, IPADs. “If FAAC was looking for who to give IPADs, it would have made more sense sending them to some of our universities and even secondary schools that are in dire need of computers and educational facilities for learning. This is another clever way government officials steal from the annual budget.” The going market price of the computer is between $600 and $850 (about N96,000 and N136,000). But, it was gathered that the committee plans to purchase the system for about N260,000 each for the 106 members at a total contract sum of almost N30million, including other logistics in the transaction. “This is the amount of money that would be enough to provide about 100 boreholes to most communities without a reliable source of potable water in the Niger Delta currently suffering from the devastation of oil exploration that produces the money the committee gathers every month to share,” Mr. Anthony said. http://premiumtimesng.com/business/4391-faac_to_spend_n30million_on_ipad_for_members.html#.T3AHAVR32Zs.twitter |
SaharaReporters has learnt that former Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Lagos has demanded that the Lagos State government and various local government councils in the state contribute huge sums of cash to fund his 69th birthday celebration. Reliable sources told SaharaReporters that Mr. Tinubu, a professed opposition figure and leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), made it compulsory that the chairmen of all local governments under the party contribute cash to give him a birthday that one of his critics has described as “obscene and immoral.” In all, the ACN chieftain has asked the state and local governments to cough up N1 billion. “The birthday party is being planned as a month-long affair and will be celebrated in phases,” said one source. In addition to the funds from his state, Mr. Tinubu has also asked that the governors of Oyo, Ekiti, Edo and Ekiti make significant cash donations to the planned events. Our sources revealed that tension may be brewing between Mr. Tinubu and Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State over the latter’s refusal to contribute towards the lavish birthday party. Mr. Ajimobi recently hosted President Goodluck Jonathan's wife, Patience, during her visit to Oyo State. A source close to the governor told SaharaReporters that Mrs. Jonathan told Mr. Ajimobi not to create enmity with PDP elements in his state. She reportedly described former Governor Tinubu as a closet member of the PDP. Our source said Mrs. Jonathan, who was piqued by Tinubu’s recent criticisms of her husband’s policies, also revealed that Mr. Tinubu has met secretly with her husband on several occasions. She said that, at one such private meeting last year in France, President Jonathan and Tinubu struck a deal to quash a case against the former governor for violations of Code of Conduct provisions. After portraying Mr. Tinubu as a selfish politician out for his personal financial interests, Mrs. Jonathan told Ajimobi to contact her directly if he needed anything from Mr. Jonathan. A source in Oyo stated that Governor Ajimobi’s decision not to bankroll Tinubu’s birthday extravaganza may signal the governor’s determination to escape from under Mr. Tinubu’s tyrannical style of leadership within the ACN political orbit and Ajimobi's move to start a gradual migration back to the PDP. Ajimobi is generally described as a non-performing governor by Oyo indigenes. Although Mr. Tinubu claims to be 60 years old, a source told us that he is at least 67 years old. http://saharareporters.com/news-page/lagos-state-cough-n1-billion-fund-tinubus-birthday-celebration |
