As some bank customers continue to express displeasure over the decision to introduce N65 on remote-on-us automated teller machines (ATMs) transactions in the country, bank executives have stressed the need for more understanding on the policy. Remote-on-us are transactions done by a cardholder on another bank’s ATM. The policy takes effect from September 1, 2014. Speaking in an interview with THISDAY yesterday, the Deputy Managing Director, Diamond Bank Plc, Mr. Uzoma Dozie said the fee would encourage people to conduct banking transactions through other channels, such as mobile money and point of sale terminals (PoS). According to Dozie, the decision was taken because it was discovered that as a result of the removal of the charges on withdrawals from other banks’ ATMs in 2012, a lot of pressure was being put on the ATMs mostly by customers withdrawing very little amount of money. “The justification for the policy is to drive people to use other channels such as mobile money, Internet banking and PoS. If you transact a business through PoS, the cost is even lower and customers are even rewarded for using PoS. “So, it is going to reduce the incentive to use ATM and encourage other channels,” Dozie added. Also, Sterling Bank’s Executive Director, Finance and Strategy, Mr. Abubakar Suleiman argued that contrary to the misinformation widely peddled, the use of your bank’s ATM is totally free of charge. He maintained that the restatement of cost recovery for the use of other banks’ ATM is intended to limit the cost incurred by banks and does not constitute profit. Banks are still left with the burden of three free withdrawals a month, which translates to N195 monthly charge, he explained. The Sterling Bank Executive noted that while the cost is less than the income on medium and high value accounts, it was sufficient to render most low value accounts unprofitable. This, he noted would force banks to discontinue marketing such accounts. “The previous policy on limitless withdrawals might have benefited those who were already financially included in the short term but would have harmed mostly poor people with banks scaling back investments for mass market and refocusing on the middle class,” he added. In addition, he pointed out that the current burden on Nigerian banks as a result of the AMCON levy as well as the increased cash reserves requirement gives less little room for pushing additional cost to banks. According to him, the huge cost on banks was becoming a source of concern for investors and could have negative impact on capital flows. The Chief Executive of Ecobank Nigeria, Mr. Jubril Aku argued that the move was part of measures to make banking business sustainable in the country. He reiterated that the fee was introduced as a result of the rising cost of maintaining ATMs. “If your bank has made its own ATMs free for you anytime you want to use it, then you should make use of it. The banks must be encouraged to continue to invest in ATM,” Aku said. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had said that the policy would ensure that customers get better services from banks. The banking sector regulator also insisted that the fee would engender healthy competition among banks. The Director, Banking and Payment System Department, CBN, Mr. Dipo Fatokun had also said the policy would not affect the central bank’s financial inclusion strategy. http://www.cebih.org/news/ |
The implementation of a N65 charge on remote-on-us ATM withdrawals recently announced by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) will commence today. Remote-on-us are transactions done by a card holder on another bank’s ATM. Although some bank customers have expressed displeasure over the policy, the central bank had explained that it would, engender competition among banks. According to the central bank, the new charge shall apply as from the fourth remote-on-us withdrawal (in a month) by a cardholder, thereby making the first three transactions free for the cardholder. Prior to the amendments in December 2012, the charge used to be N100 on any remote-on-us withdrawal. But the N100 was removed then so that people would be encouraged to use ATMs, it had explained. The CBN also stated that the policy would ensure that customers get better services from banks. According to the central bank, transaction volumes at other banks’ ATMs increased astronomically due to the free cash withdrawal at ATMs. “The wear and tear as well as the frequency of servicing the ATMs has increased significantly. Indeed, some customers were beginning to abuse the use of ATMs through countless withdrawals. “This development has led to increase in cash transactions, which negates the bank’s cashless policy,” the CBN argued. Furthermore, the banking sector regulator argued that maintaining ATMs is expensive as it requires economic incentive for owners to deploy and maintain the facility. To the Deputy Managing Director, Diamond Bank Plc, Mr. Uzoma Dozie, the fee introduced would encourage people to conduct banking transactions through other channels, such as mobile money and point of sale terminals (PoS). According to Dozie, the decision was taken because it was discovered that as a result of the removal of the charges on withdrawals from other banks’ ATMs in 2012, a lot of pressure was being put on the ATMs mostly by customers withdrawing very little amount of money. “The justification for the policy is to drive people to use other channels such as mobile money, internet banking and PoS,” he added. On his part, the Managing Director, Financial Derivatives Company Limited, Mr. Bismark Rewane, said the ATM charge was appropriate. http://www.cebih.org/n65-charge-on-third-party-atm-withdrawals-takes-effect-today/ |

Their are several ways to make money aside from ad banner. currently Linda makes money from ad banner and also through reviews. lets take a look at NL frontpage, any topic that gets to the frontpage is bound to get more audience. the front page can be divided into 2. first 5 can be static ( which means the first 5 post will be the first post even if new threads are promoted to the frontpage) then the remaining will be changing. which means, NL can now begin to do review for companies that are running promo or companies that want to show case their products. |
@ Seun why i Used linda as an example is because i have done ads on her blog before and i believe NL has more traffic than she does. up till today, she runs her blog by herself. even if you want to automate your ads, NL should at least fashion out other ways of making money. i know some guys here on Nl that makes their daily income from Nl. If NL shuts down today, their business will be greatly affected. these set of people am sure will make payment for premium service. all am just trying to say is 8 years is enough for NL to start making cool cash... |
I and a couple of friends where discussing about the growth of internet company in Africa yesterday and Nairaland came to my mind that if after 8 years, nairaland is not in the league of internet company raking in millions of Naira weekly... then something is wrong somewhere. its either Seun lack business sense or Nairaland is not a money spinner. but seriously if Seun lack the skills to monitize NL, why cant he just look for someone or even hire a business development manager to turn Nl to a big internet company. right now, Lindaikeji charges close to 600k on her blog for top ad banners and minimum of 40k for writeup ads.... i think Seun should wake up from his slumber. someone please advice him before its too late. |

I have always blame ASUU wen Dey go on strike, but on a second thought, if FG can bail out the banking sector with billion of Nair's, bail out the manufacturing sector, nollywood and some other sectors with billion of Naira. what stops them from bailing out the education sector. abi all this sector FG is bailing out no b naija student whey get proper education go Dey work there ni? I think our present crops of politicians aren't being sincere. they Dnt want us to be well educated cause Dey know once our generation is well educated, we will break from their shackles of corruption and darkness. |

This morning more than 30 trucks filled with 5-cent coins arrived at Apple’s headquarters in California. Initially, the security company that protects the facility said the trucks were in the wrong place, but minutes later, Tim Cook (Apple CEO) received a call from Samsung CEO explaining that they will pay $1 billion dollars for the fine recently ruled against the South Korean company in this way. The funny part is that the signed document does not specify a single payment method, so Samsung is entitled to send the creators of the iPhone their billion dollars in the way they deem best. This dirty but genius geek troll play is a new headache to Apple executives as they will need to put in long hours counting all that money, to check if it is all there and to try to deposit it crossing fingers to hope a bank will accept all the coins. Lee Kun-hee, Chairman of Samsung Electronics, told the media that his company is not going to be intimidated by a group of “geeks with style” and that if they want to play dirty, they also know how to do it. You can use your coins to buy refreshments at the little machine for life or melt the coins to make computers, that’s not my problem, I already paid them and fulfilled the law. A total of 20 billion coins, delivery hope to finish this week. Let’s see how Apple will respond to this http://news-hound.net/samsung-pays-apple-1-billion-sending-30-trucks-full-of-5-cent-coins/ |

?? if the scholarship is sponsored by Atiku I would say he is just doing it so that people would see him or think he is a good man or to have more votes in 2015 presidential election if that's what he's plans are he is dreaming because this won't make him defeat GEJ in 2015 presidential elections.
