Travel / Re: Canadian Student Visa Thread Part 14 by Renewable0216: 5:17pm On May 26, 2018 |
Hello people, It's my first time writing on the Canadian thread after many years on NL. I'm currently studying in the US(many thanks to the NL thread) but I am making this inquiry on behalf of a close relative. He is a little above 40years, married with 2 Kids. Both parents have only their BSc. He's been working in the Banking industry for over 10years and he's a Chartered accountant. He's seriously considering immigration options for himself and his family. Given that he's of age and don't have a Masters, his points on the Skilled Entry Scheme is quite low. What feasible options can he consider? He's willing to advance his career by going back to school but not sure if he should go for PGD,MSc,MBA(that's not too expensive). Which of the options will be easier to get Visa with? Are there other options? Thanks for your anticipated responses. 1 Like |

Hello guys, First, I'd start with an apology! I almost totally disappeared from here since I got to the States; believe me, it wasn't intentional but trying to grapple with a new system in one hand and balancing research/course workload on the other hand is no easy feat. That's not to say it's impossible to come back here once in a while after you resume school but I own up for being one of the feeble-minded who can't handle too many things at a time. Apologies! Plus, I didn't get enough funding when I was leaving so, trying to work and study must had some impact too. Luckily, I got a 'rare' 50% scholarship the very last week of school: it was a miracle and funding for subsequent semesters seem sure from now. Bottom line: Don't be desperate, when you are desperate you make terrible decisions that might not be easy to correct for years. When it's God's time to get things done, he'd work things out for you! Don't be mad at yourself when things are not working as planned, I know it can be demoralizing but that's time to work on yourself, do your due diligence and research! I never advocate short cuts(tricks and other illegal things such as falsifying documents, etc). Even when you don't have the means personally, when it's the right time, God will provide support. To balance this, It would be fair to come out clean to explain that having funding secured is one the best things you want to get done before leaving Nigeria. If writing GRE and TOEFL will make a school provide funding, prepare well for those exams and do them well: if you can't be diligent with GRE, how will you be able to cope with school demands? Also if you're working, save as much as you can, that helps too! I think it was one of the things that helped me convince the VO. I am somewhat very displeased when I see young folks trying to get into school but spending their 'little Nigerian salary' showing off petty clothes/things on social media. That's puerile and being short-sighted! For some schools like mine, chances of getting funded before you arrive as Africans is rare especially in Engineering. They want you to come on your own bills the first semester, demonstrate your abilities, then you might be considered for funding. You also want to be discuss this with your program Coordinator and be very sure funding will be provided after the first semester, never assume! Usually there are more funding opportunities during the Fall; if your school is not funding you, you may want to politely ask why and confirm if there will be funding for subsequent semesters. In all, I'm a strong preacher of diligence, hard work, smart work and trusting God to crown your efforts. I hope this helps someone! My best wishes guys! 30 Likes 1 Share |

uchevolata: @uchevolata: Sorry Sis, but I think you got this all wrong. There are lots to answer in your post so I'd take it one at a time... First off, I will have to say sorry, but we are all experiencing the same thing. Q1: After reading your post I felt really sad... But have you tried to weigh the situation and that procedures and policies change in various countries? A1: Sadly, I don't think policies have changed much in Germany, at least in Africa, only Nigerians are facing this! We just need these guys to talk to those at the Embassy...at least try! We can't just fold our arms when Ghanaian Embassy is still open till September! Q2: Are you kidding me that you are going to flood twitter handles quote politicians even the acting president A2: We won't be the first persons to do that...folks have done that for even less germane reasons. Q3: just German consulate has not decided to responded to emails on appointments? (now I was really taken aback and felt ashamed). A3: Taken aback and ashamed...those are big words tho. But I'm still at loss as to why you are? Any ignominious act? Q4: It's looking more like the protest is farther than just wanting to school in Germany, I perceive! A4: How so? What else is there to do in Germany than school the first years? Do under-handed jobs? Give me a break! Some of us are classy for that babe... Q5: I beg of us let's act wisely when we do things and stop making this Germans look so less on us. A5: Got better ideas? Seem like good time to air them now Q6: Come to think of if, a German can say if you push this much you can as well apply to a US school and getting scholarship or get non tuition free school in other part of Europe. A6: Have they said that? They made Education free for a reason. And I think you've gotten this all wrong. This attack is not on the Germans per se, they probably just reacting to influx of applicants this round and probably don't want to stress themselves. We just need someone to make them want to stretch a little. Their advise has been wait till next year...what happens then? A deluge of old and new applicants pushing them far beyond their limits?? Have you thought about that? Q7: My Friend applied to a university in Frankfurt for PhD, after weeks of waiting, exchanging research topics with his supervisor, suddenly a mail came in and state sorry we can't continue with the admission process as the German as regulation has told them to pay attention to its citizens and remain mute about it! This was in March 2017. In April TUMunich did same thing applicants pursuing a PhD must have been a graduate from TUM. A7: I'm sorry about your friend, really am. But this is the position of certain schools, some schools are so eager to have us that they took it upon themselves to mail the Embassy! Q8: I applied to confederation college in Canada what you are experiencing for Germany happened to me, I have even paid a 110$ application fee, until the coordinator said this (Unfortunately, we do require minimally a Second Class, Upper Division for admission to our post-graduate level programs in Engineering. This was set after recent discussions with immigration and other partners who work in Nigeria.) A8: This is a different ball game Sis, you probably just did not meet the requirement for that school, another school who sees the good in you would have gladly jumped at you...right? Q9. If you have applied to a Canadian school you will understand that 2'2 goes for PGD I had gotten Conestoga and Lambton in 2016 but couldn't continue due to finance. Q10:We on Canadian thread didn't floor the Canadian ambassador mails. We on the Canadian thread can tell you from August 2016 to February 2017. 90percent of Nigerian applicants were refused because of changes in immigration policies. A10: The Country made a policy change...How are you so sure this is the case for Germany. Check around Sis, all other African embassies are still open? Should we run to other countries because own guys can't be called to question? Q11: it is their country and can change the laws doesn't matter to the Nigerian president! A11: True, it's their Country, thier Universities, their money...butb international relation exist too. Nigeria, despite our not so-good reputation, is still a fertile ground for them...maybe not the best but they still spend money funding an Embassy on our soil. Q12: Why am I grieved? Please lets take decisions with wisdom so as not to kill other opportunities.... They have every right to do what they wish to do! Let's be diplomatic and have faith with prayers. A12: On this I agree. The last thing a wise man would do is burn a bridge just because he's past the ridge...but are you sure our silence wouldn't do worse? If we succumb to their whims and caprices so easily, what happens next year when they now "combine" 2 batches? Q13: They will send appointment replies very soon before August ends by God's grace.... Be hopeful. Sending disturbing mails can put them in distress and conclude not to go ahead don't you think? A13: I am hopeful and prayerful... that is why we are doing this. What if they don't re-consider? Which most Germans "usually" don't? Let's just give them a nudge by getting one of our top officials to wedge in... This is not a bottle-and-knives fight.... it's a social protest to generate the right results. I'm in fact too lanky to spear-head a revolt! Q14: In my opinion, quit the idea of social media protest, one thing you should know is that Germans does care like Americans too don't. A14: Nice choice of words...your opinion...nice, noble and praiseworthy but I think we are on same ship here. Correct me if I'm wrong...you worry is extremity and total sabotage of our goals but Q15: Sorry, for the long epistle! God bless us all, if it's His will to make it manifest no man can shut it. A15: Sorry about the long post too, but I think it demands it lest people go off with the wrong notion about our intentions Maybe I didn't articulate our reasons and approach well...forgive my inadequacies But the truth is...we need to be more concerted and painstaking in our approach. Our goal is to simply get our folks in high places to dialogue with them at the Embassy. No one is carrying placards and logs! It's simply enough noise to make those who can change things come in and speak with these Germans! The right person talking to them can get the job done. In fact, just a phone call! But how do we get them to do that if we just lazy around! I'm made bold to say that the social media would get the job done! If it does not, at least we tried. Things we regret most in life are not the things we do...it's the ones we don't! Conclusion: Let's thread with caution!! Yes we would Big Sis. We would thread with caution and be civil too. We can be civil and still cause a change! #Winter17 Impossible is nothing! PS: Ucheveleta...this is nothing personal. I apologize in advance if I sounded that way...but believe me, it's not! I respect you and respect your opinion too. See you in Germany #Winter17 5 Likes |

daaviincii: Good job @daaviincii Why not do a follow up mail to subtly fault their premise that they have been booked out given that some with interview dates have not funded their accounts and won't show up on the interview dates. Also, implore them if they can optimize their process(like get another VO or some other thing they can do) so that more people can be received at the Embassy. Impossible is nothing. Let's keep throwing suggestions at them so that they can think of something. Nice job again Bro. Thumbs up! 3 Likes |

Hi guys... Happy weekend to everyone. I sense there's been a lot of tension in here lately, spats and blows flying around... I don't think we have luxury of time to afford such distractions...Time is of the essence. It happened that I got my admission since early June but due to some inexplicable difficulties, I'm yet to get my admission letter... With the new development at the German Embassy, I'm really unhappy about how things look at the moment But then, a wise man once said, when there's a will, there will always be a way! Impossible is nothing! I'm very hopeful that #Winter2017 is very possible. I believe there are very intelligent folks here...We just need to harness our will power, time and intellect to hatch out a feasible plan. It's obvious we can't leave things to chances or throw our hands in the air...We can still cause a change! I'm proposing a group of five people who are yet to get interview dates and are very optimistic that we can still pull this off. I believe just 5 people will do and then we can share with others how we got the job done! Let's take the bull by the horns guys! We can pull this off! I got some ideas already but sharing it here...Not for now! Too much cook spoil the.... If you want to join this indefatigable team: Criteria: You need to get to Germany this September but you're yet to get an appointment date. 2.) Pollyannaish and never backing down in the face of challenges 3.) Resourceful and Dedicated If you think you qualify, PM me or send me a mail at renewable0216@gmail.com Please, noise makers and detractors are not invited. We'd be back with results! I promise! Expecting! For those who want to keep throwing jabs and punches... Mazel Tov! 1 Like |

slimmy2005: Interestingly, I just saw this. Sorry Bro, I got really discouraged after the school refused to provide ANY funding for the first year. I was asked to provide a balance of over $30k for them to issue I-20. They, however, sounded like there's assurance of funding after the first year. Sadly, other applications didn't turn out well too. Got really discouraged. Not sure where to pick up from? Any ideas Sorry if I bashed in the midst of some discussion, I just saw this quote and thought to reply it. Thanks guys! |

glucklichewelt: I guess I'm in similar shoes with you but my questions are more... Let me start by greeting the house and everyone that has sustained the tempo on this thread. Thumbs up folks! I was once quite active on this thread but sadly after the schools I wanted failed to give me admission, I changed focus to another country. Like the prodigal Son I'm back and good news is: FAU Erlangen gave me admits for the course of my choice. So, forgive my rustiness, I'd love to be brought up to speed with recent happenings as regards schooling in Deutscheland . My list of questions: 1. For FormA, what Bank offers the best rate and how much is the total needed in naira? (Used to be 1.8mil at the time I was here but I know it's almost double now) 2. Since I'm still in Nigeria atm, what viable skills can I quickly pick up that might help one get a good side hustle to provide fund for the 2nd year? I've picked up my German studies again but outside the Language, what else can I quickly learn? 3. In the light of the 2nd year funding, is it totally possible that I get ALL the money during my 1st year? Is it realistic to believe that you can garner all the funds for the second year during 1st year side hustle? What options are available in case my studies get so intensive and I can't do a any hustle? 4. Are there any tony jobs one can get as a student? I mean, like an averagely good part time good job( not necessarily the high profile ones)? If programming, what language? Is there any hot cake IT job that I can quickly pick up the skills even before leaving Nigeria? 5. I'm an Engineer/ IT personnel with some years of experience, what are the prospects after completion of MSc? What is required for securing PR? How long do you have to stay after studies? What amount do you need in your account? Must you get a job in your field and what's the possibility of that? 6. I'm yet to get my offer letter and sadly the Lady to send it won't be available till July but in the interim what can I do to fast track the Visa process? I learnt on the thread that Finitiba accounts are easier and faster ( Hope that is correct), what do I need to open one? 'm guessing I'd need the admission letter but who says I'm not wrong... Generally, what's the next step to take after getting the admission letter? Sorry about my lengthy questions and my seeming laziness, I I don't think I am. I intend to still crawl pages of this thread but would love a head-start to fast-track the process. My people say you don't miss your route when you ask around for directions...Abeg show some love. Thanks guys! Vielen Danke' 2 Likes |

Sorry it took a while to get back, work got crazy over the weekend I seemingly can't quote their posts because it's now Part 11 and the post in Part10 seem to be locked (or is there a way to do this?) @Slimmy: Good to hear that you have 2 friends in similar program, can you kindly inquire how they got funded? Thanks @happyday: Thanks for your response. I seriously hope they don't expect me to fund my way all through. Interestingly, I mentioned my areas of interest in my SOP and even mentioned faculties I'd like to work in their research group. If need be, I'd reference it in my subsequent mail to the Grad Coord @SirRiddy: Thanks bro! So you got in for the MS too? I guess you chose K-state cos it's PhD and the funding? Do you by any chance have anyone doing PHD in KU? @your 2nd comment: I really don't understand this fully. Sending you a PM @Lagosismyhome: Truth is I didn't state that I needed funding in my SoP and there was no where in the application that asked. I'd definitely follow your advise and mail the program Coord on Monday @Ponpon: Thanks for the kind words. I'm sure yours is around the corner too! I pray funding follows oo @Gunther6: Bro! I appreciate you Skinny and everyone that has helped me reach this stage! God bless you richly! I'm back this time and I think I have some good news this time. I got a mail from one of the schools you advised that I applied to that I've been accepted for a PhD Electrical Engineering. Super excited about it. The only ish now is I was asked to send financial document before issuing I-20. Truth is I don't have such financial muscle Anyways, I trust the Elders in the house to guide this "toddler" in the right direction I must appreciate the indefatigable efforts of @Electronic aka my tutor He's been very helpful and instrumental all through the application stages. He's also given valuable advice on how to proceed which I hope to act on from Monday but I'm open to more guidance; the more the merrier, right?! I totally will love full funding or something very close. PS: I've been in talks with the grad coord for a while and she's been of help too though most times pithy and not discussing things at length. Ive never discussed funding with her up till now because I felt it was sort of sensitive but now that the admissions' given, how do I proceed from here? Also, I once mailed the particular Prof whose research aligns with mine before submitting my application but he never replied. Should I mail him again, or reach out to even more outside my area of interest? What should I do differently in the mail this time? The school is U o Kansas, if that might help Looking forward to your much esteemed guidance folks! cc: Electronic, Slimmy2005, Sir Riddy, Lagosismyhome, Gunther6, just wise and everyone who can be of help 3 Likes |

Hello People, Sorry I've been off radar on this thread. I took the advise given sometime ago to write the GRE; so I've been active on that thread for a while Sadly, I didn't do too well in the test Q161 V154 Now, I'm all out for schools that suit my profile and can provide funding. I kindly solicit help with schools that match my profile Profile again: CGPA: 3.55/4 (Converted from 5.7/7) IELTS: 8/9 GRE: 315 (Is this fair enough or I should consider a re-take?) Little research experience But 2 years+ Industry Experience with Renewable Energy/ Power Industry. Ambition: MSc / PhD Power and Renewable Energies, Smart Grid, Electrical Engineering I'm looking at a top tier school, UC Berkeley...(I hope this is not merely Utopian?) and then middle-tier and safe net schools I appreciate the effort of Happyday who sent me some schools but not all offer my specialization. I've started mailing Program Coordinators. Electronic, I assume you're kind of familiar with this field, any suggestions? I'd also appreciate guidance on crafting an excellent SOP and how to package my application. Any material or blog that can be helpful? Looking forward to response(s). #TeamFall2017 |

ModestGal: ModestGal...What do you need help with? How close is your exam? I assume you have Manhattan books already. Be precise with what you need help with so folks can be of help. For Vocab building, the Magoosh flashcard app does some good job, though you should be on the lookout for any new word you come across from reading blogs, papers, news, etc. You should have a dictionary app on your phone to always check and recheck words. Example: I learnt "recondite" from Nairaland when someone used it to describe RC passages. Sartorial was used to describe Mark Zuckerbergs' jacket when he met Buhari In my case, I usually use the app when I'm saturated reading other Textbooks and doing those "funny" RC passages; it was my subtle way of cooling off. A good strategy in learning Vocab is association: after seeing the word, what looks strange to you about it? The meaning of the word...which friend or person you know has that characteristics? Peevish and Petulant describes some of my friends that are easily rankled...That way I always remember the meaning of the words. Another way is to group similar words together eg Besmirch,Polemic, Diatribe, Lampoon, Lambast, Objurgate all have similar meaning. Once you've learnt a word, any new word you come across that have similar meaning, associate them! I'm sure you'd find a couple of them. Lastly, words need practice. Always think about the new words you've learnt, how you can incorporate them into your regular vocab or even use it in your Issue or argument essay! Keep thinking, using and rechecking the meaning of the words. You can also taunt your friends with them, I almost lost some when I bombarded them with grandiloquence! At least, it made the words stick! Keep practicing, it might take some time but you'd progressively improve. My best wishes! Marzel Tov 3 Likes |

ipledge01: I'm assuming that you're using Public transport. If not, just drive down from Ojuelegba into Ikorodu Road. JKK is after Obanikoro but before Anthony. Watch out for Mutual Benefits House, i think that's the most conspicuous Landmark in the place. Though you might have to drive down towards Maryland before you turn into JKKs side of the road. Case you're going by public transport: From Ojuelegba, board a bus to Ojota/Ikeja/ Anthony. Any of these will be fine. Some conductors might not know where JKKs building is so tell them Mutual Benefits House( that's after Obanikoro and Savoil Bus stops but before Anthony) I hope this helps.? |

Aig84: I had similar issue with you. I think I have more materials than you do! However, given the nature of the exam you might need to combine more than one text in fine proportions. All the textbooks have their strong points but considering how confusing it might be in finding a balance, I'd suggest my pattern to you: I used the Manhattan books more: for me, they handled almost 90% of my Quants. Started out with Official ETS then consolidated with Manhattan 1-6. After reading a topic in this and you still find certain things recondite, you can quickly glance through other materials to see if they explain the concept well. In my case, I think I checked some Probability stuff in Princeton Review and Kaplan. For Verbal: Other than the Official textbook( which you should definitely start with) I used Kaplan and Princeton for RCs. I didn't quite study text completions and SEs like that. I'm of the opinion that they are more vocabulary inclined. If you know the meaning of the words, you stand a better chance picking the right option. So for Vocab building, I used the Magoosh flashcard app. It really helped. Lastly: You determine which of the textbooks works best for you. Given our different predilections and style of learning, you might find a certain text well suited for you than another. This for me is the most important after learning all the concepts: PRACTICE WITH SIMULATIONS! Kaomafen, Crunchpep, McGill, Kaplan and then PowerPrep. Lt me know if this helps 3 Likes |

Scholastica16: Scholastica, I totally get your point. However it's proved difficult for me to adapt. I've read textbooks saying "You should read less into the passage but read actively", " You don't get marks for reading the passage but for answering the questions correctly" Sadly, I'm not sure I've got a grasp of that. From my experience, when you read the passage sketchily and eventually get to the questions, it takes a whole lot of time trying to find where the author mentioned what's being asked especially on the longer RCs. Given the smattering time, one could easily become flustered when you have to take time to search the passage again for each question. I guess my understanding of the entire concept of minimal reading is what's faulty. Would you mind some expatiation? Probably, you'd be more limpid in demystifying the approach. |

hirschfelder: You're awesome Brother! I totally appreciate you! Interestingly, my vocab has been improving using the flashcards! I hope to keep building on it. I've also downloaded coadcoax to practice RCs. I'd stick to Ets Official and Manhattan for Quants then. I hope to come back with sumptuous reports after the test... Thank again. Your response has done a lot for me. Danké Schon 1 Like |

Guys...Sorry I've been away for a while. II've been trying hard to study for this test but my scores from practice tests are not looking as good as desired yet. Have barely 2 weeks to the test. Verbal particularly has been the bane, RC still proving difficult. I must admit I've made considerable progress compared to when I started but I need to fast track things. Codexgigax mentioned someone with 170 in this section. That means it's achievable with the right strategies. I'm I looking in the wrong places? What material is best to focus on? I think one of my issues is choosing from the deluge of materials I've got. Unfortunately, I'm not in Lagos to help those who need study materials but I think a friend in Ibadan has the Magoosh videos. I'd confirm and revert to those in IB. So guys, how do I up the scores? Need at least 160 in both sections. Any advice? Thanks folks. |

Hisvoice: Sorry I'm getting back to you a little late. I just confirmed myexamplanet.com . They have several offices in Lagos,Abuja and PH. Someone registered this week for 55k for GRE. I think they offer other exams too at competitive prices. I hope this helps.... |
