Equipment, vehicles and goods belonging to government and other Nigerians reportedly stolen by Boko Haram insurgents have been smuggled to the Republic of Chad, officials said yesterday. Nigerian ambassador to Chad Mohammed Dauda and Adamawa state government officials confirmed the report saying steps to recover the items had been taken already. “Yes, we heard about the story and then we also received a report from Nigeria, urging us to investigate the whereabouts of the stolen equipment from Mubi by the Boko Haram members,” Ambassador Dauda said in an interview with BBC Hausa service yesterday. “Ever since we got the report, we quickly wrote to the Chadian Gendarme - which is the police, the military and their immigration office,” he said. “We don’t know exactly the items, but there are indications that reveal they are government and schools vehicles, household goods, furniture and other goods stolen from burgled shops. Ambassador Dauda called on the Cameroonian authorities to also launch investigation “because there is about 300 kilometres to cover in Cameroon before entering Chad from Nigeria. Hence it is possible for such items to be lost within the country, too.” He called on Nigerians to discard the belief that relations between Nigeria and Chad are rusty. The insurgents two months ago captured Mubi and several towns and looted shops. Reports at the time quoted the insurgents as having boasted that the large quantity of food and household goods they took away could last them for at least a year. The towns were re-captured by the military aided by vigilante and hunters last month. Also, the Adamawa State government is pushing for investigation into reports indicating that goods looted by Boko Haram insurgents from the state were taken to Chad. In an interview with Daily Trust yesterday, Phineas Elisha, the spokesman to Governor Bala Ngilari, said government would lodge a formal complaint with the federal government on the issue. “Government has been informed that goods carted away from Mubi found their way in to Chad. In fact there are many vehicles with Adamawa State registration number that were seen crossing in to Chad”, he stated. He said the state government will soon cause the Nigerian Foreign Affairs Ministry to take up the matter with Chadian government. Meanwhile, the councillor representing Digil Ward in Mubi North Local Government Council, Sahabo Bello, has called on the federal government to rise up to the challenge and demand explanation from Chadian authorities. He also asked President Goodluck Jonathan to assist business men to rebuild their businesses, saying property worth billions of naira have been looted in Mubi. A displaced person from Mubi said most of Boko Haram fighters he saw in Mubi before his subsequent escape were from Chad and could not speak Hausa or any Nigerian language. According to him, goods ranging from foodstuff, vehicles, motorcycles, house wares to clothing materials were carted away. “We know Chadians because we lived with them for many years. Most of the Boko Haram fighters I saw in Mubi were typical Chadians and we got information from the border that goods looted from shops and houses in Mubi were taken across the border in to Chad”, he said. The ministry of foreign affairs yesterday said it had not received any official report of complain from Adamawa government yet. Spokesperson of the ministry, Mr. Ode Ogbole told Daily Trust that the ministry would respond as soon as it gets a report on the issue. Efforts to get Chadian Embassy officials to react on the matter proved abortive as all the telephone numbers of the Ambassador were not available. When our reporter visited the embassy, there was nobody to attend to her because all the staff had closed for the day.http://www.dailytrust.com.ng/daily/top-stories/42752-property-seized-by-b-haram-seen-in-chad |

A Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, Sheik Ahmed Abubakar-Gumi, has asked those he described as “recycled leaders” to give way to young men to occupy leadership positions in the 2015 elections. The cleric, who told the leadership of the Kaduna State Chapter of the Ohaneze Ndigbo during a consultative meeting with him over fear of violence during the 2015 polls, said “complete new leaders” were needed to emerge to lead the country. He said, “I want to say that Nigeria should bring complete new leaders who have not served this country before because we keep on recycling old leaders who don’t have the interest of the country at heart, but their personal interest. “I also want to tell Nigerians that they should not see the ruling Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress as opposing religious party, but purely political parties which are doing things the way they like, either personal or political. “The political awareness of 2011 is different from the awareness of 2015; and by the next 20 years, every Nigerian will be fully aware of his political rights to the extent that nobody can cheat another person on the issue of elections in the country. “We should not allow politicians to use religion to divide us, we should be relating together because our security is that if our neighbour is safe, we are also safe.” Gumi, a retired Major of the Nigerian Army, also said that retired military Generals that had over the years subverted civilian administrations had no moral justification to complain of rigging in the 2015 general elections. He said the nation would have been far better off by now if the military had not interrupted civil rule in the past, stressing that those who brushed aside the nation’s constitution had turned around to use it. Earlier, the President, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Kaduna, Mr. Austin Amaechi, had commended the cleric for his efforts in ensuring that there would be peace during and after 2015 elections.http://www.punchng.com/news/gumi-says-nigeria-needs-new-leaders/ |

Eligibility for 2015: S-Court dismisses suit against JonathanABUJA-The Supreme Court, Tuesday, dismissed the suit seeking to stop President Goodluck Jonathan from vying for a re-election next year. A five-man panel of Justices of the apex court presided over by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, struck out the appeal which was filed before it by a Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, from Adamawa State, Dr. Umar Ardo. Delivering the ruling, the CJN, accused Ardo of inviting the Supreme Court to arrest a proceeding pending before the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal. He noted that the substantive suit challenging Jonathan’s eligibility is currently before the appellate court, stressing that Ardo lacked the locus-standi to move the apex court to either take over hearing on the matter or compel the appeal court to join him as an interested party in the pending appeal.http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/12/jonathans-eligibility-s-court-dismisses-suit/ |

Details are beginning to emerge on some of the sweetheart deals that cemented the relationships of the old guard of the All Peoples Congress (APC) and Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State. As the dust from the tremors of the political landscape settled back in 2013 with the defection of the five Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors to the APC, what followed were weeks of getting-to-know-deals in the APC. “Finding their feet in the new environment had huge financial implications for the newcomers. Behind the photo opportunities that the country was treated to, the sharks among them moved in quickly,” a source involved in the exchanges told the Nigerian Times. To the delight of the APC top brass, Amaechi who appeared in a hurry to acclimatize started picking the tabs of many party programmes. Nigerian Times learnt that even the publicity arm of the party had a new lease of life on account of Amaechi’s generosity. Lai Mohammed, the APC’s publicity czar, became a frequent flyer on the Lagos/Port Harcourt, Abuja/Port Harcourt routes. That was when Bola Tinubu, the ultimate power broker in APC, moved in. No governor in the Class of ’99 comes close to Bola Tinubu in privatising public resources. Lagos has been such a boon that almost a decade since he left office, he has been a central figure in all the political intrigues. Those abreast of the early days of the relationship characterize it thus: “Amaechi was the political orphan on the prowl with plenty of cash buying up affection and influence in the new political family. Too many doors opened up to him because the party, in many respects, was poorly funded and too often, depended on Tinubu’s mood swings. Tinubu on his part was seeing beyond Amaechi’s new convert’s zeal; he had his eyes fixed on the honey pot that was Rivers State. They hit it off”. Tinubu owns both TV Continental (TVC) and Radio Continental (RC); companies that have always been run by a few journalist friends of his. But a few years ago, he brought in a former top shot of Qatar based Aljazeera to rejig the place. Part of the reforms was the launch of a pay TV arm called Consat TV (Continental Satellite Television). Since he had his fingers burnt in the defunct HiTV, Tinubu had always dreamt of a business to rival South African owned DSTV. Consat was his answer and the service launched in June. His next move was to tie up Consat and the Rivers State Government. Consat TV and the Rivers State Government entered a deal for the purchase of fifty thousand decoders at the premium rate of fifteen thousand Naira per decoder. The deal set the Rivers State treasury back by seven hundred and fifty million Naira. Nigerian Times can report that since the signing of the deal and full payment was effected, less than ten percent of the decoders have been supplied. Why a government would want to buy decoders for its citizens remains unclear, but watchers of the Rivers State treasury say it is one of the “transfer of wealth” cases they have been witnessing since the governor decamped to APC.” The relationship had recorded its first victim almost immediately. In a classic case of journalism misreading the dark art of a proprietor’s interest , Bola Tinubu’s TVC, or more precisely, Oluchi, who was TVC’s correspondent in Port Harcourt ,when the Rivers State House of Assembly crisis began, was to pay a steep price. Her crime was that bit of the trade every journalist lives for, a scoop. On the day Chidi Llyod, the governor’s supporter went wild, bludgeoning another member on the head with the mace, it was Oluchi and her crew that brought the scenes across homes in the country. But because of the limited coverage of TVC not many people saw the video that night. Indeed the government and many media houses had eggshells on their faces in the intervening twenty four hours. The governor’s propaganda machine got all the newspapers to report the event as one more instance of Wike’s supporters’ belligerence. Unknown to them, Oluchi had reported the event as it unfolded, correctly identifying Chidi Llyod as the villain and properly situating him between the warring camps. It took twenty four hours for other media houses, especially the newspapers to realise that they have been badly used. TVC, itself, was forced to stop running the story the following day. By then the video had gone viral. Miss Oluchi was declared persona non grata in Port Harcourt. Her company could not protect her and fearing for her safety she escaped to Owerri. Her cameraman returned home late one night to find his house ransacked. He fled Port Harcourt too. After many months of idling away in Owerri, and the company ignoring her, she resigned. In her reaction, the Information Commissioner in Rivers State, Ibim Semenitari, admitted that though such a deal exists between Consat TV and the state government, the agreement was never about Governor Rotimi Amaechi, but about the good of the people of the state. She told the Nigerian Times that it was wrong to say that just 10 percent of the decoders had been supplied, adding that 50 percent of the product (the quantity which the state government paid for) had been delivered. While defending the agreement for the supply of the product, the Commissioner noted that the deal was important given that the Federal Government’s digitization policy would soon take off and the state government needed to comply. “First, your figures are wrong, but to your question, 50 percent has been supplied and that is all we have paid for. What we are doing is not about the purchase of the decoders, but about the digitization policy which will commence soon’’, she explained. Semenitari added, “We are getting the decoders because we need to migrate to the new platform and we are also grooming installers for the project which will in turn empower our youths by way of providing job opportunities’’. According to her, since the state owned television station and radio station were in the process of joining the rest of the world in migrating to the new platform, it was important that the purchase was made to enhance the penetration of information to the remotest parts of the state. “The penetration into the villages will not exist since we want to reach the largest mass of the people if we do not do this migration,’’ she explained. Consat TV which launched in June this year is one of three pay TV firms apart from the popular but expensive DSTV. GOtv is a cheaper offering from Multichoice and StarTimes which is a joint venture between the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and Chinese investors. The NTA StarTimes, the biggest player in the direct to home television service sector is offering free decoders ahead of the 2015 digital migration. Until the Christmas promotion started, the decoders went for N3, 900 with one month free subscription and offering 35 to 70 channels at 1,000 Naira monthly or up to 3,000 Naira monthly. NTA Startimes is currently available in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Aba, Benin, Enugu, Ilorin, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Markurdi, Onitsha, Port Harcourt, Sokoto, Uyo, Yola, and Ibadan. GOtv owned by Multichoice Africa with some channels from the DSTV bouquet offers a similar service to StarTimes and is a direct competitor. For N2, 900 subscribers get a GOtv decoder including one month subscription to GOtv Plus – which gives them access to over 41 local and international channels. But until the recent promotion, Gotv access cost was 6,900 Naira for decoder, outdoor antenna, remote, and 1 month free Gotv plus package. However, consat TV is one of the new Nigeria pay TV which offers subscribers only 24 channels at a cost of N15, 000 for dish and accessories and subscription price of N4000 per month. And very crucially, both Startimes and Gotv are plug and play. No installation fees. So, far from Mrs Semenitari’s pro-poor fibbing, this is a deal done at the behest of the mafia don.http://pointblanknews.com/pbn/exclusive/tinubu-amaechi-n750million-deal-exposed/ |
After its rancorous primaries, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) seems set for another major crisis. The party’s senators and some of their All Progressives Congress (APC) counterparts who lost return tickets have decided to revolt against the Senate leadership. Many PDP lawmakers are said to be angry with the Senator David Mark-led leadership for not doing enough to protect them against their party’s leadership in the run-up to the December 8 primaries. Besides, shortly before the Senate adjourned plenary two weeks ago, some lawmakers had started compiling impeachable offences against President Goodluck Jonathan. The plot then, which was championed mainly by the opposition senators, was to table the president’s alleged impeachable offences as soon as the chamber resumes plenary tomorrow. In a major shift, it was gathered that the aggrieved senators, with some PDP senators now joining their ranks, have decided to kick-start the removal of the Senate leadership – starting with Mark. A senator, who is privy to the plot, told our correspondent in Abuja that “the plan has changed.” He added: “We never expected the party to treat us this way. We stood by the party when there was turbulence occasioned by the emergence of the New PDP. “There was a plot then to impeach the same leadership but we stepped in and stopped it with our sheer number. In fact, we used our personal contacts to talk to the organisers and they backed down. We prevailed on them not to rock the boat, moreso as the Seventh Senate had just a few months to go. “We thought the party would take note of what we did and also note our loyalty and reward us. Rather, we were not even protected in these primaries. Can you imagine the party leaving us at the mercy of governors?” The senators, it was learnt, are considering either Minority Leader George Akume or Committee on Environment and Ecology Chairman Bukola Saraki as replacements for Mark. The reason to go for either Akume or Saraki, one of them said, is that “we do not want the Senate Presidency to leave the North Central”. In a similar development, the lawmakers have vowed to back Speaker Aminu Tambuwal to retain his seat. “Last week’s court pronouncement that PDP governors don’t have to lose their seats because they moved to a new party will be fully applied here…”, said another source. Although the Senate resumes plenary tmorrow, the aggrieved lawmakers have not put a timeline to their plan to remove Mark. Also, the senators did not confirm whether the plot against Jonathan was still on the front burner or whether it would be tabled in the chamber this week. Senator Alkali Jajere told reporters two weeks ago that the Preident’s impeachment plan will be unveiled on return of plenary. Mark’s Media Adviser, Kola Ologbondiyan, dismissed the alleged plot to remove his boss. “There’s no such plot,” he said. Almost half of the 73 PDP senators lost their bid to return to the Senate. The majority of the APC Senators picked their tickets to stage a comeback. Although some of the PDP Senators have gone to court to challenge the conduct of the primary elections in their states, others have vowed to vent their anger on the Senate leadership. In Akwa Ibom State, for instance, two PDP Senators – Ita Enang and Aloysius Etok lost their bid to return to the Senate. Senator Hellen Esuene lost her attempt to pick the gubernatorial ticket of the PDP in the state. In Abia State, Senator Uche Chukwumerije lost his bid to stage a comeback, Senator Nkechi Nwaogu’s ambition to govern the state is hanging in the balance after she was reported to have defected to another party. The only Senator who survived the onslaught of the governor is Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe. In Cross River State, Senate Leader Victor Ndoma-Egba is contesting the result of the primary election after he was defeated by a member of the House of Representatives, John Enoh. Another senator from the state, Bassey Otu, lost to Gershom Bassey in the primary. In Bayelsa State, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri is up in arms against those who conducted the election for declaring that he lost the primary.http://thenationonlineng.net/new/primaries-mark-must-go-angry-pdp-senators-vow-2/ |

One of Nigeria’s most powerful Muslim leaders, the emir of Kano, has expressed optimism that the Boko Haram insurgency which has claimed some 13,000 lives will soon be over. “I say help is on the way. Terror must and will be defeated,” Muhammad Sanusi II tweeted late Saturday. “All it requires is the good leaders, uncommon courage and unrelenting determination, and victory will be ours.” Sanusi, Nigeria’s second most powerful Islamic leader, was presumably referring to the emergence of former military ruler Muhammadu Buhari as the candidate of the opposition All Progressives Congress in next year’s presidential election. Buhari will challenge President Goodluck Jonathan’s ruling Peoples Democratic Party for the country’s top job on February 14. “We will together see the end of them and their reign of terror,” Sanusi said. Sanusi became emir earlier this year after being sacked from his post as the central bank governor, where he was one of the government’s most high-profile critics. Last month, he voiced support for vigilantes fighting Boko Haram in the volatile northeast, urging others to form civilian militias and questioning the competence of the military to end the five-year-old insurgency. On November 28, a week after the comments, gunmen with explosives attacked the mosque near Sanusi’s palace during Friday prayers and killed at least 120 people and wounded 270. The emir was out of the country at the time but many believed he was the target because of his criticisms of the Islamist sect, which says it wants to impose a strict Islamic state in Nigeria’s mainly Muslim north.http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/12/muhammad-sanusi-ii-says-help-way-boko-haram-will-defeated/ |
Former Head of State, Gen Muhammadu Buhari(retd) has condemned the bombings in Kano and Jos, saying the actions of the terrorists, not sanctioned by any religion, will not succeed. In a statement by the All Progressive Congress presidential candidate, made available to newsmen, Saturday, Buhari said the nation will overcome its presents challenges. ” I condemn, unreservedly and with every strength in me, the recent terrorist attacks in Kano and Jos, the two historic cities that are known for their rich cultural and religious heritage. “Once again, those who seek to influence our way of life, modify our faith and our most sacred core values, have struck, leaving in their wake lives brutally cut short, limbs badly broken and dreams forced to fade away. General Muhammadu Buhari “But these people, whose actions are not sanctioned by any religion and who subscribe to no known decent values, will not succeed. Our people are resilient and strong, and our nation is capable, based on our rich human and material resources, of successfully tackling these nihilists. “We will together see the end of them and their reign of terror. They have failed because Nigeria will remain strong and united in the face of what has now become an almost daily infliction of terror on a defenceless people. Women, children and the aged are not spared by these barbaric purveyors of horror, intimidation and panic. No religion condoles the killings of such vulnerable and innocent people, hence we are sure these terrorists profess to none of the world’s great religions, much as they seek to mask their actions with the cloak of religion. “Because their ideals are primordial and whatever cause they claim to be pushing is not just, they will not succeed. In spite of their terror, our respective faith and how we practice them will flourish and expand. Our reputation as a people of deep faith and peaceful religious coexistence will shine through, it will not diminish, it will not be forfeited. “I commiserate with the victims and their family members. While praying that Allah will grant repose to the souls of the departed and comfort those who lost loved ones, I urge all of us to demonstrate our time-tested compassion by providing support and succour to those affected one way or other other in their hour of need. “To my long-suffering fellow citizens who have borne the brunt of these almost daily senseless attacks, I say help is on the way. Terror must and will be defeated. All it requires is the political will, uncommon courage and unrelenting determination, and victory will be ours.”http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/12/boko-haram-will-end-reign-terror-buhari/ |
