A former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, on Tuesday said he adjusted his itinerary to suit and honour the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Muhammadu Buhari, who was in Ogun State for his campaign ahead of the February poll. Mr. Obasanjo made this known when Mr. Buhari led chieftains of the party on a courtesy call to him at his private residence in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital. “But let me in a special way welcome Muhammadu,” Mr. Obasanjo said. “Our paths have crossed on a number of occasions and when I was told you are going to be coming to Ogun State, I wasn’t sure whether you will come here or not. But I told my boys -I said well, whatever programme we have outside Ogun State for today, let us shelve it just in case Muhammadu and his party and his team decide to call here. “You will remember when you decided to contest you wrote me a letter this time around. And I replied your letter. When you became the flag bearer of your party, you wrote me another letter. And I replied your second letter because I believe that you have honoured me by writing and I should of course reciprocate by also responding to your letter.” The former president said what was paramount to him was who would make Nigeria better irrespective of the party the candidate belongs to. Mr. Obasanjo, however, declared that he remained a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. “I have always said that party or no party, what is paramount for me is Nigeria. And that will remain paramount as far as I am concerned. There is no political party in the world that is made up of saints and our own political parties in Nigeria will be no exception. All the political parties have saints and devils among them. But because what you are campaigning for is the votes of saints and devils to be able to win an election, and I wish you well,” Mr. Obasanjo said. Mr. Obasanjo added that politicians should do away with trivialities and face issues, to tell Nigeria what would be done to better their lots. “I thought that I should say it today. I will just beg all of you who are contesting to add one to it; you mentioned economy, you mentioned corruption, and you mentioned security. All of you, I will beg of you, to add infrastructure. It’s very important. You may take it as part of economy but I will take infrastructure as special and give it special attention. “For all political parties that are trying to woo us to vote for them in the coming election; let’s go away from red-herring, let’s go away from trivialities, let’s face issues and tell the people of this country what we will do to deal with these crying problems of our country. Having said that, I will also say that while a party must be microcosm of a nation – and in a nation you will have near saints, devils, rapists, armed robbers and a good party must have all this in them. “But what matters is that when that party has to go into government, it must look for men and women of character. And we have them in all parties; we have them throughout the nooks and crannies of this country. Again, I wish you well as you go around. I thank you for this visit. I cannot end without reminding you, even though I saw some old faces, but some of us will remain firm at least at the ward level where I am very active in my party.” In his speech, Mr. Buhari said he came to appreciate the roles Mr. Obasanjo played in his career. He said he needed to further solicit for his support. “When I set about the programme of going round the states, it was decided that we should be taking two states per day. I think we have so far succeeded in doing the South-South and the South East. Whether we can maintain that success I don’t know. But somebody had the temerity to ask me that when I come, shall I call on Chief Olusegun Obasanjo? I don’t think I answered the man. I just looked the other side. I think that I should not come here in whatever capacity without calling to pay my respect. “Sir, it’s a fact that you know more than all we know about the problem that we are in. But what we’ll do is try to convince you to believe us that we are going to do better. We expect your understanding and support, although you insist in remaining in PDP. I have reached a certain degree of frustration in my attempt for you to try to shift a bit but you have refused. “Briefly, we have been going around three fundamental issues: security, economy, corruption. This vicious circle is what the APC is determined to break. Because without security, there is no way the country can settle down not to talk of living in it. So many people, educated and uneducated, some said up to 60 per cent, will say Nigeria is sitting on a keg of gun powder. “And then corruption; we believe that if we are able to stop corruption, a lot of resources will be available to invest in infrastructure, get the factories to reopen, get jobs, and get goods and services. So security, economy, in terms of employment, production, manufacturing, goods and services, and then agriculture will again give impetus to employment. We have to be systematic and work to make sure that the vast land we have is cultivated not only to produce food, but to produce raw materials for agro-allied industries, which used to be very viable but which we allowed to die because everybody has concentrated on getting oil money. “Now the oil money is dwindling rapidly; I think we better come back to our senses. Sir, briefly, this is what we intend to do and this is contained in our manifesto. We are not going to be inflexible the way some people accused us of doing it. We are going to be dynamic as we go along and that’s why I said we are here to seek for your understanding, for your support, in spite of the political card you hold.” After the visit, Mr. Buhari led his political train to the campaign ground at Moshood Abiola International Stadium, where he and other chieftains of the party emphasised the need for voters to cast their votes for the party at both states and national levels.http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/174846-nigeria2015-ill-support-best-candidate-irrespective-party-obasanjo-tells-buhari.html

THE Southern Nigeria Christian Elders’ Forum (SOCEF) on Sunday faulted the “prophetic message” of Enugu Catholic priest, Reverend Father Ejike Mbaka, concerning President Goodluck Jonathan, calling on the cleric to remain apolitical. Addressing journalists shortly after their meeting in Enugu, the Forum said Mbaka’s message was merely his personal opinion and not from the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. The meeting was attended by archbishops, bishops and other Christian leaders from the South-West, South-South and the South-East, including Most Reverend A.N.C Anikwenwa, Bishop Peter Ogumuyiwa, Most Reverend Caleb Maduoma, Reverend Felix Ekiye, among others. The Chairman of the Forum, Bishop David Eberechukwu, who gave the stand of the group, said it was not the first time Mbaka would be making such claims. “In 2003, he said that then Governor Chimaroke Nnamani would not get re-election and that if that happens, he would remove his cassock; indeed, Chimaroke was re-elected and up till today, he has not removed his cassock. “So, his message is just a personal opinion; it didn’t come from the impulse of the Holy Spirit,” he maintained. In a 10-point communique issued by the Forum and read by Bishop Eberechukwu, the group stated that for the sake of equity and fairness, President Goodluck Jonathan should be allowed to complete a second tenure on behalf of the South-South zone. Speaking on the need for stronger ties among the states in the zone, the forum urged the governors of the states in the Southern Nigeria “to revitalise the Southern Nigeria Governors’ Forum for the sake of political co-operation and development.” SOCEF further expressed concern over the plight of Christians in the Northern Nigeria as well as “the unprecedented challenges the nation faces as a result of the Boko Haram insurgency in the Northern parts of the country and the political tension in Nigeria as a result of the forthcoming elections. “We note with dismay and deep sorrow the plight of our Christian brethren in the Northern parts of Nigeria, the relentless siege and persecution against them as a result of their faith, and urge all forces, Federal, State and Local Government Areas, well meaning leaders- local and international to come to the aid of our Christian brethren in the North.”http://www.tribune.com.ng/news/top-stories/item/26479-mbaka-s-message-to-jonathan-not-from-holy-spirit-southern-christian-leaders |

Three members of the deadly Boko Haram sect who partook in recent attacks and killings around towns and villages of Borno State were arrested yesterday at a refugee camp in Maiduguri, Borno. They were said to be faking to be part of the Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs from Baga, Leadership reports. According to the Civilian-JTF operatives deployed to provide security for the arriving displaced people of Baga after the terrorists attacks last week, the arrested men had joined other IDPs to enter Maiduguri with the intention of spying for their colleagues in the bush. Giving his confession, one of them, Gambo Muhammed, a 27-year-old native of Gaya in Kano State, said he was forcefully conscripted into the sect through diabolic means, adding that he was never a lover of the sect. Muhammed, who was fished out by another conscripted but non-combatant Boko Haram member who was helping the Civilian-JTF to identify members of the sect that may have disguised as IDPs, said he had only killed six people since he was forced to join Boko Haram last year. READ ALSO: Damaturu Hit By New Heavy Boko Haram Assault He explained that he was forced to join the Boko Haram sect after some members of the group threatened him and several others to kill them and their family if they refuse to pick up arms and fight against non-members. “I and over 40 other young men were forced to become Boko Haram members in Baga town when Boko Haram gunmen came to round us up in the mosque. “When we were taken to a bush camp near Konduga we were given some water that was used to wash off some Arabic inscription from a wooden tablet, and we were also given a fresh date that was rubbed with some substance to eat. After eating mine, I felt some internal heat, and then I began to sweat profusely; that was all that I could remember and I became a full member of the sect doing everything other members were doing including killing people. READ ALSO: Boko Haram Unleash Carnage, Horror In Baga “I killed only six people…and I swear it was not more than that figure; in fact I was even forced to do it when we went to Konduga and we wanted to forcefully take some people’s livestock of which the owners said they won’t allow us go with them even if it was for the purpose of doing “God’s job”. So, one of our leaders asked me to step out with my gun and ordered me to kill the people and he warned that if I refused to do as commanded, they would shoot me. So I had to shoot them all,” he said. According to the Provost of the Civilian-JTF, Lawan Zanna, who led the team that arrested the three Boko Haram suspects, his team had so far arrested about 270 of such Boko Haram members who would join the IDPs to the camp either to escape being arrested or as spies. He added that the three arrested Boko Haram members are still being investigated with a view to revealing where some of their members who may have sneaked into the state capital could be fished out.http://www.naij.com/358128-how-bharam-uses-diabolical-means-to-conscript-people.html |

Cameroon’s President Paul Biya has appealed for international military help to fight Islamist militant group Boko Haram, which this week threatened to step up its cross-border raids into the country from Nigeria. The Nigerian group is part of a “global” movement that has attacked Mali, the Central African Republic and Somalia in its drive to establish its authority from the Indian Ocean to the Atlantic, Biya said. “A global threat calls for a global response. Such should be the response of the international community, including the African Union and our regional organisations,” he said in a New Year speech on Thursday to diplomats at the presidential palace. He said he regretted that a regional military force against the Islamists had yet to be established. At least 15 people were killed in an attack on a bus in north Cameroon on New Year’s Day. A man purporting to be Boko Haram’s leader, Abubakar Shekau, threatened in a video posted online this week to step up violence in Cameroon unless it scrapped its constitution and embraced Islam. Biya did not comment on the video in his speech. The country has deployed more troops to its Far North region and has killed hundreds of the Islamist fighters. New laws aimed at stamping out the militants were also helping, Biya said. “Although weakened by the losses it has suffered, our foe nonetheless remains capable of bouncing back,” he said. The German government donated 120 all-terrain vehicles to Cameroon’s military in November. Boko Haram is the main security threat to Nigeria, Africa’s leading energy producer and biggest economy and also threatens Chad and Niger. •Sourced from Reuters. A 16-year-old female student of Federal Government Girls College (FGGC), Jalingo, Blessing Ellan and her father who were arrested on Monday while trying to enter the school premises with two military hand grenades said she did not know how the grenades got into her bag. Ellan, who stated this yesterday in Jalingo while answering questions from journalists at the state police command, said the day she went to the market to buy her provisions, she bought gari and kept it with her customer to enable her go and buy other things that she would need in school, and when she brought them home, she arranged them in her bag. “There was nothing that looked like military grenades when I was arranging those things I bought in my bag,” she said. She stated that even when she left her house to the park, there was nothing like that in her bag, adding that it was when they got to Maraban Zing where their driver dropped some passengers that her father went to the back to monitor her bag and discovered that the bag had been unzipped. “When my father saw that my bag was open, he asked if I was the one who opened the bag; I told him no and he just zipped it and we all proceeded to Jalingo”. She said it was when she brought her bag for a search at the school gate that the security men discovered the two hand grenades in the bag. “Although, when our driver was dropping passengers at Mararaban Zing, I saw four men at the back of the vehicle we entered. But I do not know what they were doing at the back of our car”, she stressed. She said she has nothing to do with Boko Haram and nothing in common with them. http://leadership.ng/news/400146/dont-know-2-military-grenades-got-bag-suspect |
In his characteristic bluntness, Niger State Governor Muazu Babangida Aliyu, has declared that there is no morality in politics. He stressed that politics is all about lying and if one cannot lie, then he or she has no place in the game. The governor went on: “If you cannot lie, get out of politics. Anything you are involved in has its own rule. You are in politics to win, win first and let other things follow. Don’t be the one crying louder; lest you will be the one they will take to court. “If you are talking of honesty or morals, go and become an Imam or pastor. Politics cannot be the way it used to be. The challenges are more now, the variables have changed, the issues that we are going to face in 2015 are different from the ones we faced in 1999 and we must bear this in mind. “Our society is not as grateful as it used to be, the values and morals have gone down. If you want to win, use the modern morality. “We have worked for the people. Politics is not aboutsadaka(giving alms), politics reminds people of what you have done. Go out and remind the people of what we have done.” Aliyu, who stated this while inaugurating Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial campaign committee, affirmed that it would win the 2015 polls at all levels because it had a sellable candidate. He, therefore, directed that no stone should be left unturned to ensure that all the PDP’s candidates from the House of Assembly to the Presidency become victorious in the elections. According to him, “we should go from house to house, neighbour to neighbour, room to room to ensure we win the election. We have to do it that way for us to get somewhere.” Aliyu told PDP supporters not to allow themselves to be intimidated by anybody especially the opposition party, insisting that “once you enter a project with fear you are bound to fail. “All members of the gubernatorial campaign committee, those of the House of Assembly, and the senatorial campaign organisations and those of the House of Assembly must therefore come together to ensure that the PDP and its flag bearers win all the elections slated for next month without competing with each other,” he further stressed. The governor also directed all political appointees who could not make the membership of the campaign committees to consider themselves as mobilisers for the PDP candidates. He warned that they would be held accountable in the event of failure in any polling unit and that any of the appointees who did not want to work for the party should resign his or her position. He challenged all members of the campaign committees as well as the political appointees to ensure the party supporters at the grassroots were carried along in their activities. He added: “Our party must reinvigorate, we must consult officers of the PDP at all levels, we should work assiduously to ensure total victory.” On the governorship candidate of the party, Umar Mohammed Nasko, Aliyu described him as the best to happen to the state especially because he was a youth, asking the electorate to queue behind him. Speaking on behalf of the committee, its Director General, Alhaji Aminu Yussuf, who is also the state’s secretary of the party, assured the PDP of total victory in the February election. Yussuf said the party would change its tactics and strategy in areas where traditionally it had had problems in previous elections.http://newsexpressngr.com/news/detail.php?news=8980&title=Telling-of-lies-compulsory-in-politics-%e2%80%94Governor-Aliyu-%e2%80%a2Advises:-%e2%80%98If-you-cannot-lie,-get-out-of-politics%e2%80%99 |
