Nigerian military allegedly killed many Boko Haram insurgents during the January 5 fight for Bama, but still failed to reclaim the Borno State town. Sahara Reporters informs with reference to a military source that the troops and the militants had been indulged in “a heavy gun battle”, which resulted in the death of numerous terrorists. Soldiers together with members of the civilian Joint Task Force gathered in Kawuri, located close to Bama, to launch the fight for the strategic town. However the insurgents were reportedly well-armed and also killed many Nigerian soldiers and civilians. One of the local vigilantes who was among those trying to return Bama said: “Yesterday they [militants] were many at Kawuri village. So many of them were killed after hours of gun battles, but we were advised to withdraw. Nigerian troops left to go to Konduga and our boys are back to Maiduguri.” A military source at the 7th Division of the Nigerian Army also commented on the situation: “Yes, we made an attempt to reclaim the town but the operation was not successful. We dealt with them [Boko Haram fighters]. Many of them were killed and wounded. We are still working hard and will take back Bama from the militants.” It was obtained last month that Boko Haram were allegedly shifting their operational base from Gwoza to Bamasituated close to Borno State capital Maiduguri.http://www.naij.com/354969-army-kill-many-insurgents-during-the-fight-for-bama.html |

It is impossible to measure a family's grief after a disaster like the crash of AirAsia Flight QZ8501. And for one family, they're grappling with the loss of seven loved ones on the aircraft. Two of their family members have been found so far. A total of 37 bodies have been recovered out of 162 passengers and crew members on board the AirAsia flight. We were invited to a Surabaya funeral home where the family held a visitation for The Meiji Thejakusuma and her daughter, Stevie Gunaman. Stevie had just turned 10, two weeks before the flight. The two were on their way to a New Year's trip in Singapore with five other members of their family, including Stevie's father, grandmother, brother, sister, and her sister's fiancee. The remaining five have not been found yet. "I am devastated," said Suyono Tedjakusuma, a relative of the victims. "And now, the waiting for the rest of the family is so difficult." While the funerals for The Meiji and her daughter will take place on Friday, friends and families gathered this week to pay their respects to the mother and her young child. "My sister was a businesswoman," said her sister, Ie-wah Thejakusama. "She worked hard. She was kind to everybody." Stevie was described as a bright girl by her relatives. She was always full of cheer, they said. In a Buddhist ceremony, friends and family members lit candles on an altar and bowed in front of the two caskets. They also folded paper into what resembled money as part of a Buddhist tradition of burning "money" to symbolically provide for their loved ones in the afterlife. Earlier last week, they continued to hold out hope that some or all of their family members might have survived the crash. But with the discovery of mother and daughter's bodies, the hope for a miracle has all but disappearedhttp://www.cnnmobile.com/latest/2015/01/06/family-mourns-loss-of-seven-on-airasia-flight

The Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria on Monday expressed concern over the “excesses” of a Roman Catholic Priest, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, whose recent comments on the 2015 general elections have continued to generate ripples. Mbaka had in his New Year message slammed President Goodluck Jonathan, asking him to quietly resign from office. While calling on the Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Bishop Callistus Onaga, to caution the priest, the CSN said Mbaka’s comments concerning the President and the forthcoming general elections were his personal opinion and not that of the Catholic Church. Secretary-General of CSN, Rev Fr. Ralph Madu, in an interview withThe PUNCHin Abuja, said there were better ways for Mbaka to pass his message across “considering the explosive nature of this country.” He said, “With the way the Catholic Church operates, he (Mbaka) belongs to a Diocese and it is the responsibility of his Bishop to draw his attention to that; the name of the Bishop of Enugu Diocese is Bishop Callistus Onaga. The Bishop of Enugu Diocese should draw his attention to it; the (Catholic) Church doesn’t ignore such excesses because there is a procedure. “If I get a vision to go and kill somebody, will I go and kill? That is what I am telling you, that people like him (Mbaka) have many followers and all over the world, they are the same. When they claim that the spirit is telling them something, who are you to question the spirit? But if the Holy Spirit is telling you something, you must say it in a manner that will forestall confusion and trouble. That is how things are done, it is not the Catholic Church that is speaking; it is just an individual, just one priest. I think if it is taken that way, it will be properly understood.” According to him, some charismatic leaders “say so many things and most times, they claim they are getting their inspiration from the Holy Spirit or from God.” He added, “Fr. Mbaka is a popular guy and not like the rest of us and what makes him popular are these prophecies and that is why people are following them. So, I think his Bishop can draw his attention to it. “You know people like him have many followers and they celebrate them and they visit them for healing and many other spiritual pilgrimages. That is why they attract such type of crowd. Even though he doesn’t make much noise like us, they are the people who have their own followers, and that is why everybody is concerned.” When asked what the Catholic Church says about visions and prophecies and whether the priest has not been deviating from the Catholic dogma, the CSN scribe said there were better ways of passing across such messages. He said, “People get messages in visions but if you are talking of the sensitivity of what you are saying, that is the issue. Most times, even when people have the truth, you don’t open your mouth wide. You can be saying something that is true, but there are some ways of passing across that message in a way that it will be acceptable, considering the explosive nature of this country and many other factors.” Before he “fell out” with Jonathan, Mbaka was one of the President’s supporters and was said to have endorsed him for re-election. In November 2014, during the annual thanksgiving and bazaar organised by his church, which had many dignitaries, including the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu and wife of the President, Patience Jonathan, in attendance, Mbaka had reportedly said the President had “done well” and deserved another term in office. He had said Jonathan could have accomplished more if not for “distractions,” adding that “campaigners have no reason asking the President to return the (Chibok) girls home since Mr. Jonathan was not keeping them. Jonathan is not a kidnapper.”http://www.punchng.com/news/catholic-secretariat-asks-enugu-bishop-to-caution-mbaka/ |
Wole Ayodele in Jalingo and Daji Sani in Yola A female Senior Secondary (SS1) student of the Federal Government Girls College (FGGC), Jalingo was on Monday apprehended for being in possession of two grenades. The school’s security guards, who were conducting checks on the students’ luggage following their resumption for the second term, apprehended the student, simply identified as Blessing. In an attempt to smuggle the bombs into the school, Blessing, an SS1 student, who joined the school last September, concealed the bombs inside gari and it took the vigilance of the security men to detect them. Upon the discovery, she was quickly arrested alongside her father, who is said to be a retired Police Inspector from Numan in Adamawa State, while the bomb disposal unit at the police headquarters was quickly called in to detonate the bombs. The development threw the entire school into pandemonium as staff and students ran for cover when the news of the incident went round the school and it took great effort from the school authorities to restore normalcy to the school. Confirming the incident, the state's Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Joseph Kwaji, said both the girl and her father were being detained, while investigation is ongoing on the matter. In a related development, following an industrial action embarked upon by members of the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU), a conglomerate of several health care associations in the health sector, victims of last Sunday's bomb explosion in Adamawa State have been left unattended to at the Federal Medical Centre, Yola. Most of the victims, who were brought to the medical facility, were neglected as nurses, laboratory attendants and other auxiliary members of staff were not on hand to assist the doctors who had been attending to some of them. A source in the hospital told THISDAY that most of the victims had been referred to other hospitals outside the state, where they could possibly be attended to by medical experts, as the doctors at the medical centre were overwhelmed by the number of the injured. Efforts to speak with some of the injured proved abortive as security men prevented journalists from moving close to their wards. A blast suspected to be from an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) had on Sunday claimed two lives in Dahlehi community in Maiha Local Government Area of Adamawa State, while several others were injured. The Chairman of the local government, Alhaji Mohammed Jibrilla, had said the incident occurred when some youths lit fire to warm themselves because of harmattan cold but mistakenly added a leather object they picked by the roadside containing a strange object. Jibrilla said the leather object suspected to be an abandoned IED had exploded, killing two of the youths and injured several others.http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/ss1-student-caught-with-bomb-in-taraba/198510/ |

Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of Kano State has finally collected the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket to contest the Kano Central senatorial election next month. The governor had lost the APC presidential primary election to Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd) at the party’s national convention in Lagos but after weeks of consultation with his supporters, Kwankwaso heeded their call for him to represent them in the Senate. To this end, the Commissioner of Works, Alhaji Abba K. Yusuf, who had earlier won the ticket, was substituted with that of Kwankwaso. According to Daily Trust, in line with the guideline provided by the Electoral Act, 2010, as amended, on the substitution of candidates, Yusuf’s name was initially submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as APC candidate for Kano Central. However, Yusuf’s name was substituted with that of Kwankwaso late Tuesday in an attempt to beat the INEC deadline on substitution of presidential and National Assembly candidates. Chairman of the party in Kano State Haruna Umar Doguwa in a telephone interview, confirmed the development, saying they adhered strictly to the Electoral Act. “We have done all what the Electoral Act stipulates on the substitution of candidate. His Excellency is now our candidate for Kano Central Senatorial District”, he said, adding that the substitution was done with the full consent of Yusuf, who voluntarily withdrew from the race. Kwankwaso will now confront the Senator presently representing Kano Central, Bashir Lado, who is of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the senatorial elections. http://www.informationng.com/2015/01/apc-submits-kwankwasos-name-as-candidate-for-kano-central-senatorial-election.html |

Seven Boko Haram suspects were reportedly killed December 29 when an explosive hidden in a Toyota pick-up van had gone off before they reached the Biu market, Borno State. A security source who pleaded for anonymity made this known Tuesday adding that the insurgents allegedly planned to sneak into the market and detonate the Improvised Explosives Devices (IEDs) there. “As you know, it is harvest time and people are taking their farm produce to the market; but thank God, the bomb exploded before they could get to the market.”http://www.naij.com/351642-7-boko-haram-members-dead-as-bomb-detonated-in-the-car.html |
