Politics › HND Holders Demand Accelerated Promotion by resty4(op): 6:45pm On Dec 11, 2014
Higher National Diploma (HND) holders have demanded N1 million each and accelerated promotion to cushion the effect of their alleged stagnation and the resultant trauma.
Suing under their umbrella body, Registered Trustees of Higher National Diploma Holders Association of Nigeria (RTHNDHAN), the claimants are seeking a court declaration that they have suffered discrimination and stagnation at their various work places.
Those joined as defendants in the suit which is pending before the President of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, Justice Babatunde Adejumo are the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and the Federal Civil Service Commission.
The claimants, made up of holders of HND certificates from Polytechnics, Monotechnics and other related institutions are seeking for an order that equal opportunities shall forthwith be given to both HND holders and first degree holders in appointment and career progression at workplaces.
They said that no law in Nigeria, including the constitution, prohibits HND holders from reaching the highest grade level (GL17) in the Federal Public Service.
They are praying the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) to declare that the non-implementation of a government white paper which among others, directed that “the undue dichotomy and ceiling on rank attainable by HND holders should be removed” is discriminatory and an infringement on the rights of HND holders.
In a 23 paragraph affidavit in support of their claims, the claimants alleged that their members are stagnated for several years in the civil service, oftentimes for as much as 10 to 17 years on one grade level and are painfully bossed by much younger and most times less experienced officers.

Christianity Etc › El-zakzaky Tackles Gumi Over Doctrine by resty4(op): 6:38am On Dec 11, 2014
MEMBERS of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, led by Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky yesterday responded to an open letter by another prominent Islamic leader in the north, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Gumi on the activities of the movement in Nigeria.
Specifically, El-Zakzaky said yesterday, in a statement issued by the Media aide to the Islamic Movement, Mallam Ibrahim Usman that an open letter by Gumi against the Islamic group was to present the members in bad light.
“I am not surprised with the content of an open letter written by Dr. Gumi, meant for His Eminence, Sheikh Ibraheem Yaqoub Zakzaky at this particular time (forget the sinister ‘My Brother’ tone and the crocodile tears of condolence). The choice of the time to write the letter gave Dr. Gumi away; he was all out to attack Sheikh Zakzaky and the Arba’een symbolic trek currently taking place across the country. We are used to his constant attacks on Sheikh Zakzaky and Shi’a.”
According to El-Zakzaky Movement: “this is not the first time Dr. Gumi is complaining that members of the Islamic Movement led by Sheikh Zakzaky are blocking public roads in the name of procession” noting that, “in 2009, Gumi registered the same complaint during his Tafsir in Sultan Bello Mosque.”
“He went ahead to call on the government to shoot those he called ‘Shi’ites’ blocking public roads. According to him, Allah has given the government the license to shoot them. And the government heeded to the call. A week after, armed combined security operatives shot two people during the Quds Day procession in Zaria. The series of machinations by the government against the Islamic Movement in Nigeria had always been with the tacit support of Dr. Gumi and his adherents.
“We believe that the letter was written with insidious intent to pave way for a greater onslaught on the Islamic Movement and Sheikh Zakzaky. It was also meant to incite Muslims against those he referred to as Shi’tes. The U.S. and Israel are now all out to assassinate Sheikh Zakzaky and unleash terrorist attacks on all public gatherings of the movement, especially the Arba’een symbolic trek. This is exactly what Dr. Gumi is doing through the letter. He is doing their dirty work.”http://ngrguardiannews.com/news/national-news/189898-el-zakzaky-tackles-gumi-over-doctrine

Politics › Politicians Exploiting Terrorism For Short-term Political Gains, Says CAN by resty4(op): 7:53am On Dec 10, 2014
Oritsejafor: Nigerians running away from the truth
Paul Obi in Abuja
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) on Tuesday said politicians are constantly exploiting the current act of terrorism and insurgency by the Boko Haram sect for cheap and short-term political gains.
This came as the CAN President, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, observed that the country was still experiencing the insurgency because Nigerians are pretenders and always in the habit of running away from the truth.
Oritsejafor, while speaking at the Northern States Christian Elders’ Forum (NOSCEF) and Traditional Rulers Conference 2014 in Abuja, said the greatest war that Nigeria is fighting today is the war Nigerians are fighting against truth.
Oritsejafor stated: “Nigeria is fighting against truth. We hate truth, we hide truth and we fear truth. It is so unfortunate. In John 8:32, Jesus said you shall know the truth and the truth will make you free. Nigeria is not free because we are running away from truth. Truth can be bitter, but when you swallow it, when it gets inside, it could become sweet.
“No nation can grow or develop without embracing the truth. No matter how difficult it is. In the same John 8:46, it was said: “If what I have told you is the truth, then why do you refuse to believe me?” This is the situation of Nigerians, we are like ostrich, we are a nation of pretenders.
“We run away from the truth and we want to believe that somehow, our troubles will just vanish, but it never happened that way, because truth has a way of creating a level plain ground for everybody.”http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/politicians-exploiting-terrorism-for-short-term-political-gains-says-can/196305/

Kwankwaso’s base are his home-state of Kano and Kogi state because he is backed by his bosssom friend and former governor of the state, Abubakar Audu.

The candidates are also said to be making adequate preparations for accommodation for delegates loyal to them.
For instance, while Atiku Abubakar’s camp has booked 4,000 rooms for his loyalists, Mohammad Buhari’s group has also booked 3,500 rooms for his own loyalists.
Other candidates have also done the same for their loyalists.
The national leaders of the party are also said to be playing a major role in who emerges as the party’s presidential candidate. Especially its acclaimed National leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.
It is still difficult to say who will come out tops in the primaries between the duo. The answer will be known in the next 48 hours.
Speaking to the Vanguard, the Director-General of the Atiku Campaign Organisation, Prof. Babalola Borishade said,“To be realistic, I believe that we have 65 – 70 per cent chances of winning.”
However, the director of publicity of Buhari Support Group Centre, Dr.Chida Maduekwe told Daily Trust on phone that according to their projections, the former Head of State will have a 70 to 80 percent chance of getting the ticket.

Politics › Terrorism: Military Gets New Order From Jonathan, Gowon by resty4(op): 2:15pm On Dec 03, 2014
President Goodluck Jonathan and former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, have ordered the Nigerian Armed Forces, especially the military to crush Boko Haram members and maintain security in the country.
The new order was given on Tuesday at the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Annual Conference 2014 in Ibom Le Meridien Uyo, Akwa Ibom State,
The President, who was represented by the Minister of Defence, Lt-Gen. Aliyu Gusau (rtd) ordered the Nigerian Armed Forces to take immediate and necessary action to redeem its floundering image by wiping out the sect, adding that Nigerians depend on the armed forces for the security, peace and stability of the country.
“At this juncture, let me reiterate that the nation continues to look up to the military particularly the Nigerian Army, at this challenging moment in our history,”he said.
Jonathan, however, applauded the gallantry of the military in the ongoing counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations in the North-east and assured Nigerians that the state of insecurity would soon become a thing of the past.
“As you deliberate on contemporary security challenges facing our nation and re–strategise to meet them, I am convinced that you will apply the traditional vigour and dedication, for which the Army is noted, to bear on achieving the objectives of this conference. Therefore, I am confident that the nation will sooner than later overcome the current challenges and usher in a new era of peace, unity, progress and development. As we pray for the repose of the departed souls, we must remain resolute to address those issues that will make every part of our dear country a safe and secure place to honour their memories and enhance our national development,”Jonathan said.
Speaking also at the occasion, Gowon ordered the military to urgently retrieve every inch of the Nigerian territory occupied by the Boko Haram sect members.
The former military head of state that was also represented by the former Military Governor of Lagos State, Brig-Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd), condemned the situation where soldiers reportedly abandon their weapons to the terrorists and flee the battlefield to neighbouring countries for safety.
“To be honest with you, I have heard of stories about our soldiers running away in the face of fire and abandoning their weapons, soldiers throwing away their uniforms and equipment running away to neighbouring countries and even handing over their weapon to these countries. Could this be true? I have known our soldiers to be braver, gallant and more professional than that,”Gowon said.
Gowon hinted that during the critical period in the civil war, he had limited ammunition of only 500,000 rounds to fight the war but was later helped by private citizens to acquire 15 million rounds of ammunition within a short period of asking, and tasked the military to make best use of the $1 billion loan to procure the equipment required to fight the war.
He further disclosed that most Nigerians in both ‘high and low places’ were not happy with the fact the military that is supposed to protect the territorial integrity as well as the people from internal and external threat seems to be losing ground to the terrorists.
Gowon said the pictures of Boko Haram he had seen, apart from being mounted on Toyota vehicles, show that they look rag tag and are certainly not a threat to a well trained and better soldiers like the Nigerian Army.
The ex-military President told COAS, Lt-Gen. Kenneth Minimah, and commanders in the Nigerian Army to quickly correct the negative perception about the soldiers who have in the past had records of professionalism and competence.
“Are we short of equipment? We can buy directly from friendly and obliging governments as I did during the civil war. Yes, we can also buy from other sources (which is called or referred to as black market), but, do it properly. I have not lost confidence in our armed forces. I want you to retrieve your honour by reversing some of these lapses into successes, losses into victories; negative opinions into positive opinions. I charge you to go all out to flush those insurgents (Boko Haram) out of our territories all the way right back to where they came from. That is the task that the Armed Forces, especially the army must do, must accomplish without delay. I trust you will win,”he said.
Responding, Minimah assured the country of the Army’s cardinal duty to defend Nigeria from external aggression, maintain its territorial integrity, suppress insurrection and provide aid to civil authorities.
The COAS explained that the conference offers them opportunity to deliberate and re–strategise for better outcomes in future operations.
“The upsurge of terrorism and violent extremism in the North-east of our country has remained the most significant threat facing our dear country today,”Minimah said.
Meanwhile, this new order is coming against the backdrop of the reports that soldiers and youth vigilante killed scores of Boko Haram insurgents in Konduga, Borno State, when the militants attempted to advance to Maiduguri.http://www.naij.com/335809-terrorism-military-gets-new-order-from-jonathan-gowon.html

Fifty members of the deadly Boko Haram sect were killed in a failed attempt to invade Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, a security source revealed on Tuesday.
The military source said the soldiers from the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, repelled the expansionist move of the insurgents who attempted to capture Konduga, the closest town to Maiduguri from the eastern axis.
Konduga is about 60 kilometres from Maiduguri, and the insurgents have tried over five times to capture it without success in the last five months.
Also speaking on the incident, a leader of the youth vigilante group, who spoke anonymously with our correspondent, claimed that the insurgents were repelled in Konduga by a joint team of the military and youth vigilante group, with the sect losing many of their men.
He said the battle raged for about three hours from 10.30pm (Monday) to about 1am on Tuesday.
The source, who spoke on the telephone, said, “Nobody can tell you the exact number of the insurgents killed but we have killed many of them, while others escaped with bullets wounds.”
He added that “scores of insurgents met their waterloo when they attempted to attack Konduga town on Monday,” adding that “the insurgents came in Hilux vehicles and motorcycles.”
The youth vigilante members also told our correspondent that it was not however a success story in another encounter with the terrorists’ group, lamenting that an attempt to dislodge them from Damasak captured a week ago was not successful.
He said, “In an attempt to reclaim Damasak, a soldier and member of the Civilian JTF were killed in an ambush.”
The source, who spoke on Tuesday afternoon, said, “Four members of the Civilian JTF are still missing.”
Meanwhile, the management of the University of Maiduguri has banned students from bringing vehicles into the institution’s campus.

Politics › Kano Bomb Blast: If Things Don't Change, Next One Will Be Worse by resty4(op): 9:57pm On Nov 29, 2014
Dr. Ahmad Abubakar Mahmud Gumi has reacted to the gruesome Kano blast which occured yesterday and has claimed over 200 lives.
Sheik Abubakar Gumi prayed for the souls of the dead and also for quick recovery of the injured.
He demand resignation of officials at fault and said that if things don’t change there will be a more deadly attack.
He posted this on his facebook page,Full Statement below…
In the past the blasts were so many and uncountable. The latest in Kano yesterday has so far been the deadliest. We pray for the souls of the murdered and the quick recovery of the injured in this and in the past.
However if things remain constant after this latest blast, then we should expect the next which can be deadlier.
If heads will still not roll with no resignations or impeachments and trials, just wait for the next blast and don’t blame anyone. It’s our collective failure
Don’t also dream that you will be ever safe if your neighbors are not safe. When it comes to security, the security of your neighbors and neighborhood should be part and parcel of your security plans. When you fail to do that you become vulnerable and it will just be a matter of time.
If kano can be savagely attacked, Kaduna can also be attacked. So is also Abuja, Ibadan, Lagos etc. No where in Nigeria you can be safe.
Once the war against terror is secretive, jaundiced and opaque we are yet to be out of the woods.
As an example, just about a month ago a police officer was caught in Kaduna red handed stealing weapons and ammunitions for his people in plateau, the next day he was silenced under police custody. So also is his case silenced. His religion and tribe never mattered even in the press.

We are living in delusion. We are in disarray. Elders are largely either corruptly silent or partisan. The politicians are selfish and artificial. The traditional system has since been neutralized. The leadership of religious institutions is the most lucrative employment. The Judiciary is in epileptic stupor.
The educational institution is destructive and counter productive. The youth perverted. The military is stinky and the masses are messy.
It’s only in the aircraft or on the operation table that people agree the most qualified should pilot it or surgically operate. It doesn’t matter whether he is a Jew or a Muslim. This is the crux of the matter people don’t still understand now. Corruption has appeared in the land and sea, so you cannot depend on no man whether religious or ethnic to captivate your mind for him only to manipulate your sentiments for his worldly gains. This made it paramount to adopt the scientific check and balance system of governance. Not that based on faith or ethnicity. Who’s faith and who’s tribe?
There are people still today when you give them power they don’t only try promote their faith but suppress others. This may hold true when true men of God were in charge. To God belongs everything. So we can’t say that of prophets and their companions. But today when the truth itself is elusive to the very ‘preacher’ of truth. We have no option but to stay neutral. Allow everyone to practice his religion so long as he doesn’t encroach on the rights of others. This way we can mutually coexist in peace and tranquility.
Yet as sad as we are, let us navigate with the ‘wrecked’ ship and do the little best we can do since everyone of us believes God de oo!
May Allah protect all. Amin
Yesterday’s Kano bomb blast which occured on prayer grounds is the most deadly attack so far this year by Boko Haram insurgents.

Car Talk › Innoson Rolls Out 500 Made In Nigeria Cars Today by resty4(op): 7:42am On Nov 29, 2014
The Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company Limited will today make history as the first indigenous car manufacturer in the country with the official unveiling of 500 made in Nigeria cars built at its Nnewi, Anambra State, plant.

In this exclusive interview with CHIDI NNADI, the Chairman of Innoson Group, Dr Innocent Chukwuma, he looked at his journey into auto manufacturing, which he said began with his trading in motorcycle spare parts.

Chief Chukwuma assured that his cars, which conform to international standards, would lower car prices in the country like he did when he started to manufacture motorcyles some years back. He also promised to use his auto company to boost the Nigerian economy as well as generate employment. Excerpts:

What is your journey into auto manufacturing like?

I started assembling business with motorcycle spare parts and later moved to motorcycle assembling. Later I moved again from motorcycle manufacturing to auto manufacturing. I passed through these stages before I started to manufacture vehicles in 2010, but the factory was built in 2007 at Nnewi. We are also into tyre manufacture with our factory in Enugu. We did not start all these lines of production in one day; we take them one after another. For example, we are manufacturing some of the vehicle components here while we only import the ones we cannot produce here.

What are the first brand of vehicles you manufactured?

We started manufacturing buses, but later added Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs), pick-up vans, trucks and now cars, which we will commission today. We started to manufacture buses first because of its high demand in the country. But I knew from the beginning that we will produce all brands of vehicles and that we have achieved now.

What is the market acceptance of your vehicles?

Our vehicles are well accepted in the market, the dealers, the end users and Nigerians are happy with our range of vehicles. We are amazed by the demand and level of patronage of our vehicles by Nigerians. Individuals, corporate organisations, institutions, governments and other Nigerians are demanding our vehicles. Those who have used them attest that they are rugged, the type that can withstand the Nigerian roads which are usually rough. We are only praying that we would have enough vehicles to meet up the demands.

What are the sources of your raw materials for the vehicles?

We source our raw materials locally here while we import those we cannot readily get here. But we generate over 50 per cent of our vehicle components locally here.

How affordable are your cars?

We want to make sure that our cars are very affordable. We have done this before when we started motorcycles manufacturing and we are going to do it again with our cars. I can assure you that our cars will be highly affordable without compromising international standards on cars manufacture. We have cars of N1 million plus, N2 million plus and N3 million; we also have three models of cars under this price range.

What are your marketing strategy and niche in the market?

Innoson is a very strong brand in Nigeria and even beyond the country. All our products are of high quality, we don’t compromise on the quality of our products and we are known for this. So, Nigerians will definitely like our cars because they are of good quality and built specifically to withstand the Nigerian roads. Nigerians have good taste and appreciate quality products, so they will definitely love our cars, I am 100 per cent sure of it.

What is the standard used by IVM in the manufacture of its cars?

Auto manufacturing follows international standard, that is the same thing across the globe. So, we are adhering strictly to this international standard. Besides, the Standard Organisation of Nigera (SON) is supervising what we are doing, they come to our factory and they are happy with what we are doing. Our cars like the buses we started first to manufacture are of international standard and we are not going back on this.

You said you also manufacture tyres?

Yes, we also went into tyre manufacturing because we discovered that Nigeria has the best quality of rubber, the Nigerian rubber is so good, so I want to utilize it as raw material to develop the tyre industry in Nigeria. Also, you know that tyre is a very important component of vehicles; so since we manufacture vehicles here at Nnewi, it only follows that we must also manufacture tyres, which we believe will help to further lower the prices of our vehicles. We want to make sure that the local content of our vehicles is high as this will affect their prices for the betterment of the end users who are largely Nigerians.

How are you going to sell these cars, do you have showrooms?

We have designed to build state-of-the-art showrooms in the six geo-political zones of the country, including Abuja and Lagos. These showrooms will be supplying spare parts, sales of the vehicles and at the same time have a section for workshop which if your vehicles develop faults, you go and fix them there. You can see from the sketch drawing here that it is a masterpiece. The concept is that we will control the one at the headquarters in Abuja and Lagos while the dealers will control those in the zones for good synergy between the dealers and managers at the headquarters. Already, we have started to construct the showrooms in Abuja and Lagos.

What is the workforce at your auto plant like, are you using expatriate staff?

The major parts of the job will be done by Nigerian workers. We have a policy to encourage indigenous workforce except in cases where we cannot get the technical support needed in the plant locally. But we will first of all create jobs for Nigerians.

How many cars are you rolling out today?

We are rolling out 500 units. Already, some of the cars have been bought. We discovered that some people, as soon as they heard we have started producing cars, placed orders. This is because the cars are fantastic. You know our people used to say that good market sells itself. The demand already is quite impressive and when we launch today, we know the demand will skyrocket.

There was a time the Federal Government demanded buses from your company but the quantity was not met, why?

There is no way you can place order for large quantity of vehicles today and you have that number supplied to you immediately. But whatever quantity you want, if you place the order on time on the date of delivery, we will meet your demand. There is no quantity that is too much for us to produce. What we need is to increase our manpower to meet up the demand, but we must be given adequate notice.

We understand that some state governments are using your vehicles, what is the feedback from these states about the performance of your products?

Yes, a good number of states in Nigeria are already using the various types of our vehicle; buses, SUVs, trucks and now cars and they have found them very efficient and durable; they are very happy to use our brands. Our trucks are doing well in the states that are using them. Remember that we manufacture these trucks on specification and order; Abia, Enugu, Delta, Cross River and Benue states are so far the states we have manufactured trucks for, essentially for their waste disposal projects. And these states are quite happy when they compare the trucks they were using before and the IVM trucks.

What are your challenges?

Right now, we don’t have much challenges; sourcing of the raw materials is not too difficult, the raw materials are readily available. In fact, we now have more than 50 per cent local content. Already, we manufacture plastics which are components of some parts of vehicles and we manufacture them here. So, this is one of the reasons our vehicles are cheaper than others in the market.

In the next 10 years, where do you think IVM will be?

For now IVM is the first indigenous car manufacturer in Nigeria and so long as Nigerians are demanding our cars, in the next 10 years, our cars will help to grow the economy. We are sustaining what we are doing by the financial support of the Bank of Industry and the Automotive Council.

Politics › ‘bomb Attack Averted In Maiduguri’ by resty4(op): 4:05pm On Nov 28, 2014
Civilian vigilantes working with the Nigerian military against Boko Haram on Friday said they had foiled a roadside bomb attack against worshippers at a mosque in a key northeast city.
The suspected remote-controlled device was planted by the side of the road in the Gamboru Market area of Maiduguri and was successfully defused by the police bomb squad.
As the bomb was being made safe, another device exploded nearby but there were no casualties as the area had been cordoned off, said civilian vigilante Babakura Adam.
“Our assumption is that the bombs were planted ahead of Friday prayers in the mosque just nearby,” he told AFP in the Borno state capital.
“Of course, it’s Boko Haram’s handiwork because in the last few days several arrests have been made of suspected female suicide bombers.”
On Tuesday, two female suicide bombers blew themselves up within minutes of each other at the busy Monday Market in Maiduguri, killing more than 45.
Boko Haram, which was founded in the city more than a decade ago, was suspected as it has increasingly employed women as human bombs in recent months across northern Nigeria.
Adam said the arrests were made on Wednesday and Thursday.
On the discovery of the bombs on Friday, another member of the civilian joint taskforce, who have increased in number in Maiduguri in recent weeks, said the intention was to cause havoc.
“The bombs would have killed both traders and worshippers,” said Musa Kalo, who was among the first on the scene after the vigilantes were alerted by a passer-by.
One witness, Kolomi Abba, described seeing wires from the device sticking out of the ground, while Kalo said the bomb was buried in dirt by the roadside.
The Gamboru Market is one of Maiduguri’s biggest markets and would ordinarily have been packed with shoppers, traders and worshippers before and after Friday prayers.
The explosion of the second device, which happened at about 9:40 am (0840 GMT), destroyed markets and stalls. A large crater was seen at the scene, eyewitnesses said.
Fears have grown in Maiduguri about an upsurge in Boko Haram attacks, after the militant Islamists took over more than two dozen towns in Borno and two neighbouring states in recent months.

Travel › Passengers Got Down To Push Plane Stuck On Ice In Siberia by resty4(op):
What would you do when your flight is been delayed because the plane is stuck in ice? You simply Get out and push just like the passegers on a Siberia flight. See how Huff’Pustreported it:
Passengers on a flight in Siberia were asked to do just that on Tuesday when temperatures dropped to -52 at the Igarka airport, according to LifeNews. And as the clip above shows, pushing a frozen plane is apparently no big deal over there — because the passengers handled it the way most of us would handle pushing a car stuck in the mud.
But not everyone was out pushing, as there are also photos showing the effort from inside the aircraft.
The aircraft is a Tupolev Tu-134, according to Kp.ru, which said the plane eventually took off on what was an otherwise uneventful flight.
Hopefully everyone got an extra drink coupon for helping out.

Politics › How We Overpowered Boko Haram - Hunters by resty4(op): 12:31pm On Nov 22, 2014
Hunters are emerging as unlikely heroes in the war against Boko Haram, especially in Adamawa State where they assisted the military in recapturing Gombi and Hong from Boko Haram as they push forward in an effort to liberate Mubi, Maiha, Michika and Madagali areas which have been annexed by the insurgents as part of their so-called ‘Caliphate.’
Many find it fascinating that mainly illiterate and untrained locals who rely on primitive methods, dane guns and clubs, could defeat a sophisticated enemy like the insurgents. And questions that follow include: ‘How could sticks and dane-guns defeat AK 47 rifles and rocket launchers?’ But for anybody who is familiar with the history of the North would know that local hunters have been warriors for centuries and their association with the bush and forests has been the key to their bravery and victory in the counter-terrorism campaign.
A hunter told Weekly Trust that some Boko Haram fighters, particularly the foreign mercenaries, use charms in their confrontation with soldiers. “I can see why Nigerian soldiers flee. The fact is that some Boko Haram fighters have strong charms that can confuse their enemies, so that is why our assistance is necessary,” one hunter said. He added that many Boko Haram fighters in Gombi and Hong fled when they realised their weapons failed to fire as hunters approached.
“We are able to contain Boko Haram because their guns do not often fire when they aim at us. That is how we captured many of them with bare hands during the last encounter,” he explained.
Suleiman Namtari, an official of the hunters association, expressed confidence that the insurgents will be defeated and called for prayers as well as government assistance, particularly in areas of logistics.
Philips James, the association’s secretary, said the hunters were committed to the war against insurgency and emphasised the need for public support. “We need the people’s support and prayers. We also need government’s sustained help in this assignment,” he added.
Chairman of the vigilante in Yola North local government area, Ahmadu Nasiru, said some of his members who were not selected to participate in the war wept profusely. He stated that several weapons were recovered from the insurgents and advised the state government to equip the group with patrol vehicles and equipment to enable them assist in maintaining peace in the state capital.
“We sent our members to the battle-front but I can tell you without fear of contradiction that we do not have a single vehicle to patrol the metropolis. The governor recently donated vehicles to the national body but the state chapter did not get even a single vehicle,” he said.
Ahmadu lamented the fact that some vigilantes could not afford to buy dane-guns and other basic tools for combating crimes. He said the battle formation was organised to provide synergy between the components, including the military, hunters, vigilante and mobile police.
Commander of youth vigilante in Adamawa State known as ‘Civilian JTF’, who did not want his name published, told our correspondent that his group was working closely with hunters and security agents in an effort to reclaim Maiha after flushing the insurgents out of Gombi and Hong. He said the joint team was making headway, stressing that he expects Mubi, Michika and Madagali to be reclaimed soon considering the success of the operation so far.
Their quiet successes and their resilience complement the efforts of the military, according to locals who are happy at the development. An IDP spoke about the emergence of hunters as heroes, and she said it is heartwarming. “It’s an unusual war our troops are fighting, with unusual circumstances, so it’s only fitting if unusual alliances help win it,” she said. http://www.dailytrust.com.ng/weekly/index.php/top-stories/18258-how-we-overpowered-boko-haram-hunters

Politics › Jonathan Has The Full Backing Of The North -NAF by resty4(op): 2:21pm On Nov 18, 2014
The Northern Alternative Forum, has today revealed that President Goodluck Jonathan is going to win the North come next year elections despite perceived opposition from the region.
NAF’s Chairman, Alhaji Gidado Ibrahim revealed this when he today addressed journalists in Abuja .
This comes as a suprise due to the Northern Elders Forum and the Arewa Consultative Forum expressing their opposition to Jonathan’s second term bid.
Ibrahim said that despite all rumors going around, the North is not against Jonathan and his group in particular support the President fully because of his antecedents.
He said,“Despite all these hues and cries that northerners will not vote for President Jonathan during the next election, I can tell you confidently that he will get massive supports and votes from that region.
“The number of appointments given to the north under this dispensation is unprecedented in the current democratic dispensation.
“The Vice President is a northerner. The Minister of Defence, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, National Security Adviser, Chief of Defence Staff, Chief of Naval Staff and the Inspector-General of Police among others are northerners.
“How on earth do you expect these people to fold their arms and see the President losing in their region. He will get massive votes there.”
He said that the North will vote based on the performance of the present administration and not based on sentiments or ethnic consideration.
He went ahead and demolished the opposition saying, that all those APC has so far mustered can’t stand head to head with Jonathan.
He said,“We voted for President Jonathan in 2011 based on credibility and we will continue to support him.
“We are solidly behind the President and our forum was the first to endorse him for second term before other groups started joining us.
“It is our belief that when the people of the North supports him in 2015, people of other regions will also support us when our time comes.”
Ibrahim then called on the nation to support Jonathan as it would mean the Nations supports peace.

Business › Hausa Ajami/Arabic Inscriptions Removed From New N100 Note by resty4(op): 3:35pm On Nov 17, 2014
It would be recalled that on November 12, the Federal Government has unveiledthe new design for the N100 commemorative centenary banknote. The‘first digital banknote in the world’ will be officially issued on December 19.

Mr. Jari, in his opinion piece entitled“Controversial changes on the centenary N100 note”, critically reviews a specific but subtle change introduced to the design.

“The Arabic writing in Hausa language (the Ajami script) that read“Naira Dari” ['a hundred naira']on the N100 note has been removed,”Mr. Jari observes.“Just like the N200, and above, the former N100 note used to have the Arabic-Hausa Writing in the left lower part of the note.

“In 2009, when the paper naira notes of lower denominations were replaced by polymer ones, the Ajami Hausa-Arabic writing was removed for no reason. This development was controversial and ill-termed.

“Some argue that the Ajami writing was a symbol of religion of Islam, and, since Nigeria is a secular country, there is no need to show any religious paraphernalia on its currency. But if that is the case, why do we have writings in English? Why is it that there are inscriptions in other languages, like Yoruba and Igbo on the currency? Is it that Nigeria belongs to them?

“The Ajami writing was purposely meant to enable Hausa and other tribes that had learnt Arabic long before English to read the currency. As English came to Nigeria through the South, so Arabic came to Nigeria through the North.

“I want to call on Nigeria government and all its ministries, departments and agencies to make a thorough research before implementing innovations. Government programs are supposed to be useful and accepted by people.”

Politics › Nigeria Set To Fight To Save Mali From Terrorists by resty4(op): 7:11am On Nov 08, 2014
Nigeria has agreed with seven other African countries contributing troops to the United Nations Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) on setting up a rapid intervention force to fight terrorist groups in Mali and other cross-border criminal organisations.
The countries joining Nigeria include Mali, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Niger, Senegal, Chad and Togo. The countries are also expected to strengthen the current capacity of the MINUSMA so that it can attain the authorised contingents provided for in 2100 and 2164 resolutions of the United Nations Security Council early enough, to allow MINUSMA fulfill its mandate.
In a statement by Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Amb. Aminu Wali on Friday, he noted that the decision was reached at the recent ministerial meeting of countries contributing to MINUSMA in Niamey, capital of Niger Republic.
Wali who led Nigeria’s delegation to the meeting, also disclosed that it was resolved to strengthen Malian Defence and Security Forces (MSDS) to enable them defend the territorial integrity of Mali, reports Thisday.
While Nigeria’s troops linking up with their counterparts in the continent for special missions may not be strange, what many will find strange is the fact that Nigerian troops will be fighting to preserve the territorial integrity of another country when its own territorial integrity is being threatened by Islamist sect Boko Haram, a terror group that has taken over several towns in the north east.
Wali however said the meeting also discussed how countries in the sahel-Saharan region can strengthen regional cooperation to fight terrorism and organised crimes.
Present at the meeting convened at the instance of the Niger Republic, are international organisations, including the African Union, European Union, Economic Community of West African State (ECOWAS) and Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC). Observer countries that include Algeria, China, Mauritania, France and United States of America were also present.

Travel › Nigerian Women Come To Italy For Honest Work But End Up As Prostitutes by resty4(op): 9:15pm On Jul 09, 2014
Police control find a Nigerian woman working as a prostitute in the outskirt of Turin
Nigerian women who came to Italy to work as nannies or in factories often end up working the streets as prostitutes.
Paris-based photographer Elena Perlino, originally from Italy, decided to highlight their plight to the world. She began to notice the presence of young African women working on the streets during her commutes from Turin.
She said: "I decided to start from this surreal vision to tell a story. I have been working on the topic for several years, focusing mainly on the Italian connection."
According to Perlino, many Nigerian women come to Italy hoping to make enough money from honest work as nannies or factory workers to support their families back home, but are tricked by traffickers into working in the sex trade. Arrests, violence and abuse often follow.

Traffickers demand on average more than 50,000 euros (US $60,000) for travel expenses and accommodation, with the women having to work as prostitutes until their debts are paid off.
Eighty per cent of women trafficked to Italy come from Benin City, Edo State, in south Nigeria.
The photographer explained: "My work attempts to show a complex phenomenon that crosses Italy from North to South.
"This involves many cities including Turin, Milan, Genoa, Rome, Naples and Palermo and thousands of Nigerian and Italian people."
