A post by a Nigerian nurse recently caught my attention. She shared how her first salary in 2022 was just ₦21,000. After resigning from that job, she attended interviews at a specialist hospital only to be offered ₦23,000 for 12 hour shifts, a heavy patient workload, and demanding working conditions. She declined the offer and eventually accepted another position that paid modestly but treated her with dignity.

Whether every hospital pays this poorly is another discussion. Some government hospitals and well established private facilities pay significantly far more. However, it is no secret that many private hospitals across Nigeria have been accused of paying nurses wages that barely cover transportation while expecting them to work long hours under intense pressure.

The bigger issue is not just the salary.

Many nurses complain about being overworked, verbally abused, assaulted by patients or their relatives, and threatened with dismissal whenever they speak up. Add poor pay, staff shortages, and the rising cost of living, and it becomes easier to understand why so many Nigerian nurses are leaving the country.

The consequences affect all of us.

When experienced nurses leave, the remaining ones have to care for more patients. Burnout increases. Waiting times become longer. Medical errors become more likely. Eventually, patients also suffer.

No healthcare system can thrive if the people keeping it running are exhausted, underpaid, and undervalued.

Supporting nurses does not mean ignoring the challenges hospitals face. Healthcare facilities also deal with rising operating costs. However, expecting highly trained professionals to shoulder enormous responsibilities for wages that cannot sustain a decent standard of living is not a sustainable solution.

Healthcare workers deserve fair pay, safe working conditions, protection from workplace violence, and opportunities for professional growth. Patients also deserve motivated healthcare professionals who can give their best without constantly worrying about survival.

Nigeria cannot build a stronger healthcare system while treating its frontline workers as disposable.

Growing up, I often heard people say things like, "Your ego won't get you far... you had better swallow your pride," but I didn't really know what they meant. I didn't know what ego actually was. I can't even remember if I ever checked a dictionary or if the meaning just got lost on me—until now.

What I've learned so far about the ego from Vincent Guillem's free PDF, The Spiritual Laws, is that the ego is a mental shield we humans put on to prevent ourselves from giving or receiving love, driven by the fear of being hurt or unappreciated. It manifests in three different categories, and an egoistic person can display one or all three of them.

These categories are: Vanity, Pride, and Arrogance.

From my understanding, the vain are the category of people who, when they receive love from others, don't fully absorb it. Instead, they display it like a trophy they have won or conquered. An example is when someone dates solely because of what they stand to gain from their partner. A man might date an educated woman who earns well and dresses well, not because he loves her, but because of how she makes him look in public—to his friends and to society.

The proud are the category of people who refuse to be vulnerable. They hide their strengths out of fear of envy from others, and they hide their weaknesses because they fear "see finish" lol. They feel like less of a person when they aren't viewed as perfect. An everyday example includes people who refuse to say sorry, choosing to rationalize their actions rather than admit their human faults.

Another example of this group includes those who refuse to ask for help. Someone on Nairaland once said, "The men from my place are known for not asking for help," or something along those lines. lol.

Other ways pride manifests in people include: Refusing to say thank you because it makes you look small.

Refusing to tell a girl how you feel because you're scared she'll "see you finish."

Meanwhile, the arrogant are the category of people who, in their mastery or progression from the other two ego phases, view themselves as superior and others as beneath them. For this to happen, they have to deny the divinity of others by dehumanizing them.

Why? Because to feel superior means to be above. But how can a human place themselves above their fellow humans when all people are created equal with the same baseline humanity?

Simple: by dehumanizing others or viewing them as "lesser," through constant comparison and harsh judgment. An example of arrogance is when you, as an esteemed graduate, walk into a primary school classroom only to see pupils struggling with basic mathematics—something you are now a master of. You get irritated and ask questions like, "Why don't these pupils know this simple math?" forgetting that, once upon a time, you also struggled with that exact same "simple math."

Other scenarios of this phase include:

A fully certified content creator (a jack of all trades) who handles every single aspect of his content creation because he feels nobody else is worthy to edit his work. lol. Lesser humans. lol.

So, there's that.
Knowing the path doesn't mean that you've started walking the path. There 2 different things.
But hey, at least you know now.

Imagine i had come all the way from Abuja or Delta. So I'd have risked my life for nothing.

This interview happened to me last month. I debated within myself to post it here or not because i know there are people that would still accept the job, even if its foundation was manipulative. The company have staffs of young and vibrant youths for crying out loud.
Its likely those people were recruited in similar manner.

But I strongly believe that Truth inspires choice.
Tell me that this product contains sugar, instead of saying the product contains sucrose or glucose or fructose.

Take a look at the smoking industry: 'smokers are liable to die young' is written on cigarettes packets, but still, people still smoke.

I faced similar fraudulent interviews as a fresh graduate trying to get employment. My grouse with them is they can still get genuine interests and applications if they put it out there what they are into and what do are employing for.


I always leave when I found out their real intentions (gnld) how can you be lying and fraudulently trying to employ me on a fraudulent foundation using a false template and think I would stay?


Now this issue of fraudulent interviews have been on for years now and the authorities aren't concerned or interested in doing anything about it.


The gnld and similar brands have upgraded their game to be more convincing and less suspicious to applicants.

Nigeria shouldn't be a place where even the basics that make life what it should be is absent and anything goes like a lawless state of nature!

I'll go straight to the point.

I received an email, which surprisingly landed in my spam folder. At the time, I thought nothing awkward about it. In my state of joblessness, I was actually quite excited.

On opening the email, I saw that I had been shortlisted for a "Digital Executive Assistant" role under a GrowthHub Recruitment Program. Hurray!

I was told to complete an online assessment on a platform called Meritsphere, which would give me a temporary ID. I did that.

I hurried to the venue the next day with my temporary ID. Since I was the first on-site, I had to wait for other lucky shortlisted candidates, and this was my first red flag that made me sense something was wrong.

1) The Location

Something stood out about it. It looked like a regular house. It was a one-story building, and I just couldn't picture it as a place housing a job that befitted the title described in the email I had received: "A Digital Executive Assistant (Graduate Trainee)."

Well, I told myself that since it was a tech-related role, it could be remote or mostly online, so they wouldn't need to have a heavy physical presence.

The second red flag I received was when I tried engaging in a conversation with another male candidate, but I was quickly interrupted by a staff member and told:

"Communication between candidates is not allowed and is strongly discouraged. If you have any questions, call our attention and you'll be clarified. The person you're talking to doesn't know as much as we do, seeing that you're all new here."

We were made to write our names and temporary IDs into a book, and then we were ushered into the building. All this while, we had been seated on plastic chairs arranged outside. There were 8 of us interviewees, while the staff working there who were gradually resuming numbered about 10 (mostly ladies). Both the interviewees and the interviewers were mostly sharp-looking, vibrant youths—which is the main reason it hurts to recount this event—some leaders of tomorrow have been sold out!

The room we were ushered into was quite small (a 3-by-3 ceiling type room), and there was a flat-screen TV playing a motivational Christian YouTube sermon about success, reward, and sacrifice... "aspire to acquire"... something along those lines.

Everything just seemed off.
What if there were Muslim candidates? Should Christianity be impressed on them just because they are jobless? And there was a Muslim candidate there; I saw a lady in a hijab.

Then I was interviewed. I was taken to a separate room upstairs in the same building and was asked questions like:

"Do you want a job or an opportunity?"
"Tell me about yourself."

Then I was asked what I studied and my grade, and I told them. There was this look on their faces that made me feel I was overqualified.
Hello! It was supposed to be a graduate trainee role for a Digital Executive Assistant!

Being suspicious of everything, I asked the interviewer what the job was all about. I had already searched for "Meritsphere" and "GrowthHub" online before coming, but I couldn't find much—which was surprisingly strange for a supposed tech-associated company seeking Digital Executive Assistant Graduate Trainees.

The interview ended, and I was excused and told to fill out a digital form for the next phase of my assessment, which I was told would happen at Alausa, Ikeja the next day, and that was when my breakthrough moment came.

I was filling out the form when the guy I had tried communicating with earlier downstairs signaled to me and showed me his phone. He had written a text in his notepad: "This could be GNLD."

Immediately, something clicked. Believing is seeing, so I started looking for signs that what I had gotten myself into could indeed be GNLD. That was when I spotted the name "Vitacare360" in the digital form I was told to fill.
There were also some questions in the form that I knew I'd have to lie about to answer, so I tried to skip them, but the form wouldn't let me submit without answering.
I approached one of the staff members (a lady) and asked if this role involved selling drugs. She said it was a "Wellness Program."

But you weren't this specific in your email!

I excused myself from the venue and left.



[Why did I write this rant here?

First, I shouldn't be lied to or manipulated about a job role. Truth inspires choice. If I had known via email that the position of a Digital Executive Assistant was to market wellness programs to people online, I would never have honored that invitation. I wasted my time and my transport money.

Next time, if I see a job—especially one that lands in my spam folder, or one that I don't remember applying for, or one with a shady role description—I'll do a better job of calling HR to clarify before proceeding.

Could the job be GNLD, where participants are eventually told to invest money for kits/materials to increase their ranks? I didn't stay long enough to find out.

Were they shady in their dealings with applicants? Yes. Extremely.

Would you want to be in my shoes? I'm guessing your answer is no.

I've been going to school from primary to secondary to university to NYSC...all these for 15yrs+ of my life, but guess what?
When I was a corper in Ekiti state, I couldn't even feed myself without depending on alawee from the government.

15 years of school learning couldnt even provide garri for me to drink. I had knowledge that companies needed, but I didn't have any knowledge for myself
I realized I was a willing slave then, going around with a chain on my neck and begging for a slave master to hold me captive

15 years, but if I include the times I stayed at home because I didn't pass unilag cut off for geoscience or other lapses, it'll be 18 years, because I'm in my mid 20s and I started school at an early age. Mind you, I enjoyed double promotion twice

What's the point of my suffering when it cannot even solve my immediate problems, but can solve the problem of an industry or top company. A first class graduate in chemistry cannot produce perfume oil or liquid soap for his/her personal use, because they weren't taught, BUT, they were taught how to titrate chemicals that Shell and Nivea will use

A graduate of agriculture is complaining of hunger. A distinguished graduate of economics is heavily in debts.

The resources is abundant to go round for everyone. Artificial scarcity was created so that competition can hold.

Let's take land as an example

There are enough land for everyone to own a house and build. It's just that:

1) The world powers shut off a continent called Antarctica from you and I, saying that it's too cold and they care about you and I not going to die of cold there.

But hey, you can climb Mount Everest or Kilimanjaro and die there. That same government doesn't care. They didn't shut off the base of these tall mountains to prevent people from climbing. The United States, Russia and Ukraine are all parts of this 'world powers' cooperating to make this restriction happen.
Surprising, huh?

And mind you, Antarctica isn't a state or a country. It's a continent! Just the same way Africa is a continent. That whole piece of land being prevented from the public access. I wonder why.

2) Lagos is the choice location for sitting factories and workplace, so people flood into Lagos to compete for the limited land and resources. This increases the price of basically everything in Lagos. With efficient transport system like the bullet train, people can work in Lagos and live in Ekiti, thereby de congesting Lagos.

3) A single man needs a 5 bedroom flat for only his use or a family man, like Bill Gates, is allowed to buy and own 5270,000 acres of farmland across 18 states in the U.S.
One man can be permitted to buy this large lands, and it's okay, but people are being prevented from fetching the rain because it's disrupting the water cycle

I served as a corper in Ekiti state, and I schooled in Delta. Trust me, there are lands.

Let's also use money as an example

Ever wondered how fresh money enters the economy?

Nigerian Labor Union really need to be disbanded because they are useless to Nigerian workers.


There should be a government parastatal monitoring work ethics compliance in Nigeria, especially in Hotel, Private schools job related sectors. These two sectors in Nigeria are fond of abusing Nigerian workers and needs urgent government regulation.


I am also an employer of labor and God being my witness, those working with me are blessed. Yes our salary package might not be comparable to some big firms, but working with us gives you peace of mind, job security and time to plan and organize your own life for future growth.


During our monthly staff virtual meetings, I always encourage our workers to put in their best so that the company can grow and remain in business for them to also have a job, and I also encourage them about developing their personal skills outside work environment for their own future growth. I always assure them that their jobs are secured so long as the company remains in business and you are not found stealing company resources, assets, etc.


Every staff have 2 days off in a week and they dont work on Sundays. I made them to understand that the 2 days off every week is not easy for the company to operate on but I made it that way to give them room to relax their brains, take care of their lives and families and also to make them work with their heart. But then we only have 15 days leave in a year which is less than what other companies give as leave .


So I want to encourage every Nigerian employer reading this, no matter your business sector, please treat your workers with God's fear and love. Remember they are also humans like you. I have been asking God to help the company grow in our operations and turnover so that I can start offering my workers car loans, housing loans, educational advancement loans because I really wish to see every of my worker own a car after 5 years and a house after working with us for like 15 years. This is my desire and I pray God see my heart and grant this request soonest.



Every Nigerian employer must strive to create a healthy and happy working environment for his workers and then make it clear to them that certain things are not condoned no matter what, things like stealing, office kickbacks and corrupt practices. Work diligently and pray for the business to grow so that you can also grow, this is our motto



As for op, please tell your brother to plan his exit by engaging in massive savings at all cost and plan to quit in like 4 months time after having some savings and if the employer improves before then he can continue with the job. Flow State Definition: An optimal state of consciousness where you are completely immersed in a task or activity. At this point of concentration, your sense of time will likely be altered.
For example, you could be at an activity thinking it's just 45 minutes you spent, but when you check the clock, 3 hrs have just gone by.

That definition up there is how flow state is perceived by many, but what is left out about flow state is that it happens to you when your will is directed towards the task that you're involved in.

There's a difference between an activity you were 'stimulated' or saw the need and conviction to carry out yourself, and an activity you were forced to do.

What a country we live in!

I’ve always had that uneasy feeling, it just never added up. There’s no way those companies are producing such massive quantities using real, raw ingredients like fresh cow milk or natural fruit juice. With the level of demand they meet daily, it’s simply not realistic. My instincts have been telling me this for a long time.
