DeLaRue: The impact on overall inflation should be limited.
Diesel is a bigger driver of inflation than petrol, and the price of diesel which is not subsidised has been relatively stable.
The movement of food from the agricultural hinterlands to urban and town centres, and from the North to the South is mostly done by large lorries that use diesel. So, the overall impact of petrol subsidy removal on the price of food should be modest.
The industries producing the goods we buy, which have the power to influence the price of most goods, predominantly use diesel, not petrol. Nestle will not increase the price of Golden Morn because of subsidy removal.
Outside of private and some commercial transportation of people, petrol does not have the same impact on overall price of goods and therefore inflation as much diesel.
So, though the removal of petrol subsidy will result in some additional inflation, the inflation will be limited - spread across the entire GDP, the additional inflation should be less than 3%.
I think most people would take 3% inflation with subsidy removed than end up with Venezuela's 450% with subsidy retained.
PS: I'm not being insensitive to the plight of millions of people who will be impacted by subsidy removal, I am just trying to explain that the pain of not removing subsidy now will be worse in the long term.
This is where generations of corrupt politicians have landed Nigeria. I'm not sure you are in Nigeria Because if you are in Nigeria you will know how much is peak milk and bread now compared to when the price of fuel was stable during GEJ That little increment done by Buhari from 97naira to 189naira is the reason we are paying 1,200naira for a bread of 400naira Peak milk of 150 naira is 550naira now |

DeLaRue: 1. Many of the people in these agencies are corrupt so they are rarely effective in checking corrupt practices ie, fuel smuggling, price gouging by petrol Stations.
2. Nigeria's borders run into tens of thousands of kilometres. If the government doubles the number of police, Customs, army, navy, air force etc, they still will not be able to effectively control the entire border.
3. Smuggling is only a small part of the justification for removing subsidy. The government was borrowing to pay for subsidy, yet the larger portion of the subsidy is being stolen by a few people.
Unfortunately, there is never going to be an easy time to remove subsidy without itimpacting many hardworking people. I understand that. But it has to be removed, otherwise this country will go bankrupt with the consequence that even more people will suffer.
Venezuela, one of the other high-subsidy country is on the verge of total collapse. Last week, official inflation in that country reached 450%. For comparison, Nigeria 's official inflation is 22%.
One of the reasons for Venezuela's situation is that it refuses to remove fuel subsidy.
We don't want find ourselves in Venezuela's situation. Hmmmm...economist, so when subsidy is removed and the price of fuel jump from 189naira to 530 naira Nigerians wont experience inflation? |

A govt that is bereft of new ideas on how to tackle corruption in subsidy is cancelling the only policy that is beneficial to them
But instead of nationwide protest to demand for good governance and welfare package to cushion the effect of the subsidy removal, they are reacting to nonsense.
Many do not know that the removal of subsidy on flour which increased the price of bread for the common man was the major cause of the uprising in Egypt in 2011 |

matrixme: Seun raised a very important argument here. Is just that obidient are such sore, toxic souls, Since Seun has not exactly been showing sympathy to their messiah's cause, they will ever be on standby to attack his ideas. Civil servants are lazy, fat and overpampered in Nigeria. Here in Abuja, many of them get free vehicles to work, live in fee houses (Or paying next to nothing), gets wardrobe, and other allowances, some of them even have official cars, yet contributes almost nothing to the economy. They go to work Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays arriving 10pm and leaving 3pm those days. It is the private workers that bears the brunt of labour productivity in this country and no one is advocating their cause. I'll rather demand the government enforce increased minimum wage for private workers, albeit almost impossible. The issue of casualization of staff should be abolished. Moreso, for state governments that are bare paying salaries, where exactly will they get funds to pay an increase in civil servant's salaries? Dey play, just dey play! Another brainless fuuul |

You need to understand this: Nigeria is broke! We don't have money! No kobo to even pay civil servants even at the highest level! We're in trouble! We are broke because our leaders has refused to free up resources by sacrificing their on pay and whatever corruption they have delve into Do you knw how much these countries borrow and how much they are owing, research |
