Christianity EtcCatholics Begin A New Year, (year A). As Today Marks The First Day Of Advent by Richieboyn(op): 1:08am On Dec 01, 2013
HAPPY NEW YEAR! -YEAR A.Today the Church marks the beginning of a new year with the season of Advent as usual as the first season. From today till Christmas day, the liturgical colour will be violet(purple) and d Gloria will not be chanted during mass. Advent was derived from a latin word "Adventus" which means "coming".Today being the first sunday, the three readings of this sunday speak of 'vigilance' not in the sense of an agonishing wait for God/the judge at the end of our lives, but as awareness to the presence of the Lord today. The first reading tells us that the new world will begin with the coming of the Lord. The Gospel urges us to be vigilant so that we may welcome Him at His 'advent'. The Second reading invites us to open our eyes to discern the signs of the new day which has already dawned.

We ask for the grace of Yahweh that we may really expect the saviour of the world in purity of heart and in action pleasing to God the Father. Amen.

Christianity EtcWhat Is Christ The King? by Richieboyn(op): 7:02am On Nov 24, 2013
WHAT IS CHRIST THE KING?

Christ the King is a title of Jesus based on several passages of Scripture. It is used by most Christians. The Catholic Church and many Protestant denominations, including Anglicans, Presbyterians, Lutherans and Methodists, celebrate the Feast of Christ the King on the Sunday before the first Sunday of Advent. The Feast of Christ the King is thus on the Sunday that falls between 20 and 26 November, inclusive. Originally, the liturgical calendar had this feast on the last Sunday of October prior to All Saints' Day, where it is still celebrated in the Extraordinary form of the Roman Rite and by The Anglican Catholic Church. The title "Christ the King" is also frequently used as a name for churches, schools, seminaries, hospitals and religious institutes.

ORIGIN

The name is found in various forms of scripture: King (John 18:36-37), King eternal (1 Timothy 1:17), King of Israel (John 1:49, Mt. 27:42, Mark 15:32), King of the Jews by Romans and Magi (Mt. 2:2, Mt. 27:11, cf. John 18:33-37), King of kings (1 Tim 6:15; Rev. 19:16), King of the ages (Book of Revelation 15:3) and Ruler of the kings of the Earth (Rev. 1:5).

ALSO:

Jesus, King of the Jews
Kingly office of Christ, one of the Threefold offices
The Kingdom of God and the Kingdom of Heaven are theological concepts interpreted variously.
Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews is the fullest form of the inscription and is given in the Gospel of John (19:19), the writer of which claiming to be an eyewitness. The three Synoptic Gospels all report that the title "King of the Jews" was inscribed on the titulus attached to the cross by the Romans (indicating a misguided sentence of revolutionary sedition), and which is found on many crucifixes.
The Roman Catholic Church, the Anglican Church, and the Lutheran Church celebrate the Feast of Christ the King on the last Sunday of the liturgical year (Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite) and on the last Sunday in October, immediately before the feast of All Saints (Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite). It is a solemnity in the Roman Catholic Calendar. The Feast of Christ the King is followed by the First Sunday of Advent, the beginning of the liturgical year. Paola, Malta celebrates it on the third Sunday of July.
Cristo Rey, the Spanish translation used for several placenames.

Throne of God.

Today is a day when catholics all around the world celebrate the Kingship of Christ by processing with the Blessed Sacrament through the streets to proclaim to the world that INDEED, CHRIST IS KING!!

NB: This procession is actually supposed to hold in June during the celebration of Corpus Christi. But because of the rains, it was shifted to today. So don't get confused. The procession is Corpus Christi procession, but the mass is Christ the King' mass.

Go in2 d world! And proclaim HIM THE KING.

Christianity EtcToday Is All Saints Day! by Richieboyn(op): 12:35am On Nov 01, 2013
All Saints Day, the day on which Catholics celebrate all the saints, known and unknown, is a surprisingly old feast. It arose out of the Christian tradition of celebrating the martyrdom of saints on the anniversary of their martyrdom. When martyrdoms increased during the persecutions of the late Roman Empire, local dioceses instituted a common feast day in order to ensure that all martyrs, known and unknown, were properly honored.

QUICK FACTS:

Date: November 1
Type of Feast: Solemnity; Holy Day of Obligation.
Readings: Revelation 7:2-4, 9-14; Psalm 24:1bc-2, 3-4ab, 5-6; 1 John 3:1-3; Matthew 5:1-12a.
Prayers: Litany of the Saints
Other Names for the Feast: All Saints' Day, Feast of All Saints

History of All Saints Day:

By the late fourth century, this common feast was celebrated in Antioch, and Saint Ephrem the Syrian mentioned it in a sermon in 373. In the early centuries, this feast was celebrated in the Easter season, and the Eastern Churches, both Catholic and Orthodox, still celebrate it then.

The current date of November 1 was instituted by Pope Gregory III (731-741), when he consecrated a chapel to all the martyrs in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and ordered an annual celebration. This celebration was originally confined to the diocese of Rome, but Pope Gregory IV (827-844) extended the feast to the entire Church and ordered it to be celebrated on November 1.

The vigil or eve of the feast, October 31, is commonly known as All Hallows Eve, or Halloween. Despite concerns among some Christians (including some Catholics) in recent years about the "pagan origins" of Halloween (see Halloween, Jack Chick, and Anti-Catholicism), the vigil was celebrated from the beginning—long before Irish practices, stripped of their pagan origins (just as the Christmas tree was stripped of similar connotations), were incorporated into popular celebrations of the feast.
