Politics › Re: Is Amnesty The Solution To Insecurity, Terrorism & Boko-Haram Crises? by Rick9(m): 6:27pm On Apr 08, 2013
Is Amnesty the Panacea to the Insecurity, Terrorism & Boko Haram Crises in Nigeria?

Food for thought: While attempting to broker a deal with Napoleon, Pope Pius VII (1742-1823) said, ‘’we are prepared to go to the gates of hell- but no further’’.

Caveat:
In a country renowned for thunderous bandwagon sycophancy and where dissenting opinion or criticism is seen as ‘’Opposition’’, let me quickly point out that this treatise is apolitical and is devoid of tribal or religious inclination. It is out of profound Love for country, Patriotism and Passion that I undertook to invest my time in articulating these views. This is not aimed at traducing anybody, organization or section of the country.

Lately there have been so much brouhaha and well-orchestrated angling for Boko Haram to be granted an amnesty. The Sultan of Sokoto tested the waters and since then notable Nigerians mostly drawn from the north have also added their voice.

Rather than pestering the federal government to grant amnesty to impenitent Boko Haram members, let the Sultan and other prominent northern leaders persuade the leadership and members of Boko Haram to embrace peace, surrender their weapons and plead for clemency.

If Boko Haram wants amnesty, they must come out, show remorse and ask for pardon. They cannot get an amnesty by proxy. They must yearn for it and demonstrate it by ceasing wanton killings. It does not behove the government openly beseeching Boko Haram to negotiate or accept an amnesty. It portrays sheer helplessness and weakness. Boko Haram is playing a dangerous psychological war with the government. It will be very embarrassing to the Goodluck Jonathan government if Boko Haram snubs its overtures. I deduce they are lackadaisical over this amnesty thing, so why force it down their throat? It is a waste of time reciting poetry to somebody who does not appreciate poetry. It is human nature not to appreciate something one did not ask for or pay a price for. If the body language of the Presidency cum Political expediency/2015 election permutations is anything to go by, Aso Rock will sooner than later succumb to this wishy-washy exit strategy.

Let’s get something clear here. There is a parallel between the agitation of the Niger Delta militants and that of Boko Haram. The motive, ideology, philosophy and modus operandi of these two groups contrast. Niger Delta militants were fighting for equitable distribution of Oil Money and environmental protection of their communities while Boko Haram says they abhor Western education and that Nigeria must become a full-fledged Islamic country. The activities of the Niger Delta militants largely involved sabotage/bombing of Oil installations in the creeks while Boko Haram is kamikaze and undiscriminating: they target everybody- School children, fellow Muslims, Christians, foreign doctors, Youth Corpers etc. The Niger Delta militants had a semblance of a Unified Command and Control Structure whereas Bokites have a very loose structure, splinter groups and purportedly affiliated to Al-Qaida.

Contrary to widespread believe and in fairness to Boko Haram, the sect may not after all be responsible for all the acts of terrorism and atrocities credited to them. People settle scores somewhere and the Sect basks on it. An example is the sporadic clashes in Plateau State (Jos) and other places involving Fulani herdsmen.

Saudi Arabia, Indonesia and Iran are the bastion of Islam yet these countries don’t witness the unprecedented and sporadic killings that we have in Nigeria. There are also Muslims in America, Ghana, Cameroon etc and these places are relatively calm. Let’s stop this window dressing and get to the root of this matter.

Beyond the guise of religion and politics, there must be a strong force that will galvanize an individual to waste his life and that of others as a suicide bomber. That strong force is the trio of abysmal poverty, hopelessness/frustration, and joblessness. It’s not simplistic! A hungry man is an angry man. It will take an amazing brain-washing prowess to convince a gainfully employed young man or somebody with a thriving business to abandon the trappings of his work or business and be a slavish stooge for kidnapping or terrorism.

Nigeria and Nigerians exigently yearn for good governance and a no-holds-barred restructuring. I dream of a Nigeria that is SAFE, PEACEFUL and where ALL her citizens irrespective of their ethnic and religious background, have a sense of belonging. We want a Nigeria where JUSTICE and EQUITY reigns supreme; a Nigeria that has a zero-tolerance for CORRUPTION, NEPOTISM and TRIBAL JINGOISM. We want a Nigeria where merit is not sacrificed in the altar of mediocrity and godfatherism. We want a Nigeria where some people are not above the law. If I may borrow a word from Barrister Onyekachi Ubani,
K

Education › Re: Experience by Rick9(m): 5:32pm On Apr 02, 2013
dabraska: Moderator, I'm very sorry but I didn't know where to put this.

It was like 3 weeks ago. I went visiting my friend in school who was yet to graduate. It was on a Sunday, so I decided to go visiting after the first service in church (Faith Tabernacle). The students were on a one-week break then and were supposed to resume on that day. My friend didn't go home because it was a one-week break and he stays at Abuja.

I stayed in his room and we gisted and caught up on old times. I even came with my laptop. When it was 4:30pm, I decided to go home. When we got out, there were lots of people at the gate. As usual, students were resuming. Lecturers were everywhere admitting students into the hall and searching their belongings. I walked out of the hall with my friend and I was about entering my car when I found out that I forgot my Laptop charger and one of my phones in his room. We hurriedly went back to get them, only to be stopped by a lecturer at the gate of the hall.

I explained everything to him and he said we couldn't enter the hall. So I told my friend to go get the laptop charger and my phone from his room and that I was going to wait for him. But they also didn't allow him go inside the hall. They claimed he had a beard and that they were not even sure he was a student. They asked for his I.D card and he explained that it was in his room and that he wasn't just resuming that day. We were surprised because we just walked past them when we were coming out of the hall. They said my friend should go and cut his beard. Because I was running late and don't like driving at night, I told my friend to enter my car and we went searching for a barbing salon. After 20 minutes of searching, we couldn't find one, obviously because it was a Sunday. So we went back to the school.

We explained to them that we couldn't find a barbing salon and they didn't want to hear what we had to say. So I suggested that my friend goes in go get my stuffs, gives me, and then comes out and they can continue from where they stopped because I was running late and I was going to Lagos. The lecturer replies me and goes "If you had long term memory, you would remember that I said that he couldn't enter the hall". I felt very insulted because I was loosing patience, I was disgusted by the way we were being treated and finally, because I am a graduate of that school. So I replied that he shouldn't talk to me in that manner and that I'm no longer a student of this school. He called me rude and called the security on me.

Before I knew it, six security men including the lecturer came and gathered me. All trying to sweep me to the ground. My friend, a very strong guy, tried holding me and prevented me from going to ground. Other lecturers came and started raining insults and even slaps on me. I was held like a thief. They radioed their Security HQ and those ones came with a black pickup. They bundled my friend and I, took my wallet, my belt and my phones and took me to their quarters. They stripped me to my boxer shorts and locked us up in their prison guard room. This was around 7pm. I was given a hint that we should just beg and agree with everything said there because they were bent on making us sleep in that prison till the next day.

We later begged and I even settled one of the security guys the sum of 5k to allow me leave the prison. My friend went over to the hall and got my stuffs and headed home at 8:30pm. It was a horrible experience.

What is this country turning into? They claim they are spiritually inclined and they asked and collected 5,000 from me. It's such a shame. I wonder how many people they must have treated this way. Even to an ex-student of the school. I am disappointed at Covenant University! Bunch of Hypocrites!

Politics › Re: Nigeria Loses 6bn Dollars Annually To Crude Oil Theft by Rick9(m): 5:29pm On Apr 02, 2013
mamikky: The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) says the country loses six billion dollars annually to crude oil theft.

Mr Babatunde Ogun, PENGASSAN’s President, made this known at a joint forum with the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) in Lagos on Sunday.

He said that Nigeria also lost N105 billion to theft of refined products.

“This is a threat to our national security and our democracy. If this kind of huge amount of money gets into the wrong hands, it can destabilise our democracy and national security,’’ Ogun said.

He blamed the incessant loss of billions of money on vandalism of crude oil and petroleum products’ pipeline.

He express regrets that security forces had been unable to arrest the unwholesome practise which led to fire disaster in Arepo and Ogun and the subsequent shut down of Nembe Creek Trunk line by Shell.

“An estimated 60,000 barrels per day of crude oil is stolen at Nembe Creek. Agip also suspended production in Bayelsa because 60 per cent of its production of about 90 barrels is stolen per day.’’

He said it was sad that no one had ever been caught or prosecuted even when the miscellaneous offence Act provides for life imprisonment for anyone who stole crude oil, petroleum product or vandalised pipelines.

He advised government to beef-up security and warned that the oil and gas sector would suspend production of crude oil and supply of petroleum products if nothing was done.

Ogun called on government to deal with the insecurity problem in view of the resurgence of kidnapping and continuous bombings.

Politics › Re: 2015 Polls Will Be Free, Fair –jonathan by Rick9(m): 5:26pm On Apr 02, 2013
lekanolas: President Goodluck Jonathan has once again promised that the 2015 general elections would be free and fair. Jonathan said that there was no alternative to fair election, given the premise that there could not be peace without justice.

The President, who spoke yesterday at Mpu, Enugu State, said it was almost impossible to guarantee good governance without free and fair election. According to him, it is the level of political manipulation that breeds bickering among politicians.

The President was at Mpu, Aninri Local Government, for the dedication of the All Saints Anglican Covenant Church built by Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu. Jonathan said his administration was determined to make a difference in the lives of Nigerians. He said: “You cannot talk about good governance where the elections of people are manipulated; you cannot steal a mandate and turn round to say that you can govern well.

“Lawyers will say you can’t build anything on nothing. If your coming to power from councillorship to Presidency is based on manipulation, there is no good thing you can do there.

You cannot go and celebrate. “First and foremost, people must vote for you and you cannot talk about doing something good without their support. “It is actually during the military that they use big guns to overthrow those with small guns and take over. In the political dispensation, you must be properly elected, we must make sure that electoral processes are sanitised and the votes of Nigerians count.

“I know the kind of statement people make each time we leave here to other places; sometimes I feel so humiliated, and now the story has changed. “What I can promise Nigerians is that with your prayers, we have our challenges no doubt, but most countries have their challenges, that we will make those little changes that will make a difference in our lives.”

Jonathan decried the tendency of Nigerians to abandon the country for others because of the challenges confronting it, stressing that building a virile future was the collective responsibility of all and sundry. He said: “If we leave Nigeria and go elsewhere where we have all kinds of friends who may use business passports that can give you automatic entry into countries, but they still regard you as a Nigerian.

You cannot fit in properly until you come home. “We have talked about building the church, let us join hands and build a nation that our children, grandchildren and Nigerians unborn will be happy, irrespective of provocation and political differences.

“Just like the primate said, every leader comes and goes but as a leader, you pray that you leave behind something solid. If we progress from here, the whole country becomes highly developed.” The President praised Ekweremadu for building the church, which he likened to the one built by Solomon for God in the Bible.

Primate of the Anglican Communion, Rt. Rev. Nicholas Okoh, in a sermon, said the Nigeria’s problems were intractable because of human manipulation, adding that her people had not used her numerous religions to build an enterprise that could impact on development
