Celebrities / Wizkid And Co: Can You People Let Us Hear Word? by ridbay(m): 2:35pm On Jul 08, 2017

So Nigeria’s President has not been around for 60 days, and what people are worried about are the jibes being thrown about by pop stars?

They said they are entertaining us with their beef and that the diss is good for the industry. Well, sorry, but these guys are not suffering what the mass of Nigerians are suffering at the moment.

Not to discredit their craft or the value they have and continue to bring to the country, Wizkid’s international collaborations with A-listers like Drake are to be celebrated, and his BET successes are a source of pride. Tekno has drawn the attention of foreign media with his hit single ‘Pana’ being described by one publication as a genius work which managed to sexualize a staple Nigerian crop (still not sure that was a good thing though). And Davido has also made global headlines for his own acts too.

But, these ‘children’ should shift. Right now, the matter on ground is bigger than their duck and lion cracks. We know they will eventually make up, as they already are anyway. It is all in the package for publicity and awareness (and that’s fine), but they should not become primetime subject at a time when the country is dancing on the brink. How will their ‘who international pass’ help Nigerians answer the National Question and have the current wave of inter-ethnic tensions threatening the future of the country pass over?

If they were arguing about why the Senate should be looking to support the Acting President rather than testing and teasing him, we will be retweeting very fast. If they tell us they are dissing each other because they have contrary information about where President Buhari is, maybe we will be interested. And knowing how much they tour and travel, should they not have even a small idea about it, from their agents and their connections?

Admittedly, that would be a long shot. Even if they do, it would probably be wrong to share on social media. But the point remains that if they cannot be like John Legend who is helping Americans follow up on President Donald Trump – who, at least, they can see and attack directly on Twitter – Wizkid and his classmates should please carry their big boy noises away from our Assembly Ground; we are trying to know what the Acting Principal is saying about changes in the school. We know Wizzy and co are prefects can’t get punished much by any changes, and their meals are always assured when its refectory time. They should allow we commoners to hear word.

Politics / ‘acting President Osinbajo Holds Secret Meeting With Saraki’ by ridbay(m): 10:41am On Jul 08, 2017

Senate President Bukola Saraki on Thursday night held a secret meeting with Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, The Nation reports.

According to the newspaper, the meeting was based on some developments at the senate during the week.

This included the suspension of approval of executive appointees over the retention of the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission ( EFCC), Ibrahim Magu.

A source said: “The Senate President met with the Acting President. He actually came alone and without the paraphernalia of his office to underscore his commitment to rapprochement between the Executive and the National Assembly.

“Saraki took time to explain a few things to the Acting President, but the talks bordered on the clarification of a few misgivings, especially the rumour that he was planning to become the Acting President or instigating the Senate against the Presidency.

According to The Nation, Osinbajo had earlier held a meeting with the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), John Oyegun on Wednesday night.

A source said, “The APC National chairman came at a time the Acting President was about to have a meeting with a select group of government officials. He was asked to join the meeting, which bordered on the battle line drawn by the Senate.

“During the session, the APC National chairman said he had interacted with Saraki and advised the Senate leadership and Senators to ‘lie low’ and avoid anything capable that was capable of plunging the nation into crisis.

“Oyegun also said the APC could not understand why the party in power would be in opposition against itself.

“No one can say if Oyegun’s intervention was responsible for the visit of the Senate President to Osinbajo.”

Politics / I Am The Man To Watch In This Generation – Fayose by ridbay(m): 7:06am On Jul 08, 2017

Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose has said Joshua 9:17 is the source of his power.

Fayose said this while speaking at the 13th convocation lecture at the Benson Idahosa University in Benin, Edo state.

“Some people chose to be under the table; they don’t want to die. They are afraid. But remember that the Bible says that those who want to gain their life will lose it and those that lose their life will gain it,” he said.

“My strength lies in God Almighty. If you put me inside running water, the water will become still. If you put me the den of lions, the teeth, the claws will go inside; you can find that in the Bible too.”

Quoting Joshua 1:6-7 and nine and 17, he said: “I draw my power from those things (Bible passages). When I wake up, I lie down in my bathroom and say,

“Lord, many are the afflictions of the righteous. But the Lord God will deliver him from them all.”

He added that his ambition to become President should not be taken as a joke, “I am the man to watch in this generation. So, I am controversial because I am doing things other men like me cannot do. They are scared. They are afraid; they don’t have courage.”

He also explained the reason behind his controversies.

“What I am saying to you is that controversy is necessary for democracy. We must have our voice,” he said.

“I am not an APC member and I will never be. But remember the fact that our leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a courageous man in his own right, our leader in Yoruba land, forget about politics; if they give Asiwaju appointment, he will give a Yoruba man. Whether he is in the APC does not matter.

“‎And I came out strongly; I defended him. I am not defending politics. I am defending the truth. Our politics must have where we would stop it and say the truth as may be necessary.‎”

Politics / How Do We Explain Saraki’s Bad Romance With The Pdp? by ridbay(m): 6:12pm On Jul 05, 2017
It is instructive that the motion to recognise Bukola Saraki as Acting President was moved by a Senator of the People’s Democratic Party.

As the main opposition, the PDP has not had much joy over the past two years in trying to make Governance difficult for the ruling party. Intra-party fractions have caused rifts within, resulting in the emergence of a breakaway party, the APDA. Former key figures and members of previous administrations who have exhausted their political capital, like Doyin Okupe, opted to call it a day from the party.

However, those who have remained with the party’s system are taking courage from the faltering of the Buhari Government, especially of Buhari himself. They see this as the opportunity to repay the narrative played out by the CPC in 2010 on the matters of Yar’Adua’s ill health, demanding a handover to Goodluck Jonathan.

The only difference this time is that they don’t want just a usual handover, from an apparently incapacitated President to his Vice President. The body language of Senator Abaribe’s point of order tends to the suggestion that they would want to enact a skip, transferring power to the third in line, an ‘Old Boy’ in the person of Bukola Saraki.

Going by daily news and what is observable, the PDP may not have issues with the current Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, himself, but his heritage from Lagos. The APC marriage of two camps has barely withstood the pressure of splits these two years, and when it now seems like the terms of the union are set to be disturbed half way into the first term of the Government, schemes are in place from different groups to engineer a breakup.

This would be the way to understand the apparent consensus that greeted the Abaribe-Marafa motion before it was toned down by the Senate President. They have managed to blur the lines of partisan interests in the Senate, with Saraki comfortable at the top of the leaderboard. The choice of Saraki to become Senate President was an affront to Bola Tinubu, and it appears Saraki’s colleagues won’t mind doing another number on him.

Politics / Senator Danjuma Goje To Fashola: Resign If The Work Is Overwhelming by ridbay(m): 2:57pm On Jul 05, 2017

The Senate on Wednesday asked Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN) to resign his appointment if he was overwhelmed by the volume of work at his ministry.

The upper chamber accused Fashola of misleading the public over projects it added to the budget.

At the plenary, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, Senator Danjuma Goje said, “Initially, I wanted to come under a motion but, yesterday, the House of Representatives took up the matter. Since we are on the same page with the House, I feel I should not come under a motion. But I will like to seize this opportunity to advise the minister that he should remember that he is now a minister and should behave like a minister.

“He is not a governor (anymore) and this National Assembly is not Lagos State House of Assembly. This is an Assembly composed of very patriotic Nigerians, very experienced Nigerians; many had done his job; many were governors before him.”

Goje continued, “Fashola should know that he is dealing with the National Assembly of Nigeria, not of Lagos. If the job is too much for him – the ministry is too big; it comprises three ministries, which are works, housing and power; if he cannot adjust, then, he should do the honourable thing. He should so the needful.

“No amount of blackmail by him; no amount of propaganda by him or his surrogates will stop this National Assembly from discharging its duties in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution. We have sworn to uphold and protect this Constitution, and this we will do to the end of this Assembly.

“For now, I will cease fire and watch to see how the House will handle him. If he is well handled there, we will leave him with them. But if we are not satisfied and they pass him to us, then, we will take him over.”

Saraki, in his remarks, said the Senate would wait for actions taken by the House of Representatives.

“I am happy that the House of Representatives are also taking up this issue. It is a matter that we must be responsible, especially those at the (executive) cabinet to look at issues from a national point of view in the interest of all Nigerians.

“We will definitely wait for the outcome of his appearance before the House of Representatives before further contributions. But we have take your comment, Chairman of Appropriations,” he said.

Politics / You Ran Nigeria Aground | Sheriff Blasts Pdp Former Ministers by ridbay(m): 6:35am On Jul 05, 2017

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said former ministers of the party were part of those who ran Nigeria aground.

This was stated by the National Chairman of the party, Senator Modu Sheriff, who spoke in Abuja on Tuesday.

Sheriff called on the former ministers to tell Nigerians the source of their wealth.

He said the former ministers added the problems of the country instead of leading the people.

The former governor of Borno State was reacting to the former ministers’ meeting in Abuja on Monday,

The former ministers had backed Senator Ahmed Makarfi’s faction of the party at the meeting.

Sheriff described the gathering as illegal, stating that they had no right to hold a meeting on behalf of the party.

He said, “We want to say first of all that the party’s constitution is very clear and the organs of the party are specified – from the ward executive committee down to the national convention of the party. We don’t have the forum of former ministers among the organs.

“We take exception to the comments of this group of persons who met on Monday and called themselves Forum of PDP Former Ministers.

“We want to say that under normal circumstances, in some countries, these are people who will not show themselves in the public.

“These persons have a lot of money; they must tell Nigerians how they came about their money. Again, their opinion is that they can buy the party, but Sheriff has said no, that the party is not for sale.

“Our position is very clear; they may not support Sheriff and the reason is because they know they cannot buy Sheriff. He is not for sale. Ordinarily, these people will not walk the streets (free). They were given opportunity to run this country, but they ran it aground.”

One hundred and fifty people have been confirmed dead after a three-day war between two communities in Cross River over land.

The Director-General of the Cross River State Emergency Management Agency (CR-SEMA), John Inaku, confirmed the development in an interview in Calabar on Tuesday, Vanguard reports.

“Between June 27 and June 29 the people of Wanikade and Wanihem communities both in Yala Local Government Area of the state were involved in a communal war.

“As a result of the bloody war, 14,000 people have been displaced, 1,233 houses were destroyed, while over 150 persons have lost their lives.

“Victims of the affected communities are now internally displaced and camping in over four camps in Benue State.’’

According to him, over 4,000 victims, who fled as a result of the deadly encounter are now taking refuge in Oju Local Government Area of Benue.

He said that the conflict had crippled farming and other socio-economic activities in the area.

Inaku said, however, that Gov. Ben Ayade had provided food and non-food items to the displaced people.

“CR-SEMA in collaboration with the state’s Food Bank Commission has distributed bags of rice, beans, groundnut and palm oil, beverages, cooking utensils, cartons of Indomie, mosquitoe net, among others to the victims.’’

Inaku, who condemned the conflict, appealed to youth in both communities to lay down their arms and embrace peace.

The Public Relations Officer of the Cross River State Police Command, ASP. Irene Ugbo, also confirmed the development.

She said that additional security operatives had been deployed to the warring communities to restore peace.

Politics / How Justice Ngwuta Used Two Passports At The Same Time – Immigration by ridbay(m): 8:25am On Jul 04, 2017

Justice Sylvanus Ngwuta of the Supreme Court used two active international passports at the same time, an official of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) told a Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday.

A Deputy Controller of the NIS in Benue, Tanko Nuhu Kutana said Ngwuta was issued with an international passport in 2014 with expiry date on Nov 29, 2017.

He said Ngwuta on 5th of April, 2016 wrote to the NIS through the Supreme Court reporting the loss of the passport, and was issued a replacement on 13th May, 2016.

He said checks in 2016 showed that he was still using the missing passport, while retaining the new one, adding that doubt about the loss of the old passport arose from his use of two dates of births 1951 and 1952 for the two documents.

“When he was issued the 64 page passport in 2014, he continued to use the 64 pages of the new passport interchangeably, and he did not return it for cancellation,” Kutana said.

He also said Ngwuta “claimed 1951 date of birth and the 2016 passport he claimed 1952 as date of birth, so it creates doubts as to the loss of the 2014 passport”

Justice Ngwuta is facing charges of money laundering, false age declaration and possession of multiple diplomatic passports.

Justice John Tsoho has adjourned the case to October 6, 26 and 27 for cross examination.

Politics / We Have Your Receipts: Ipob Members Have Just Proved How Much They Love Joking by ridbay(m): 6:52pm On Jul 02, 2017

Sometimes you read something and cannot help but laugh out loud. It’s the eaction that we had to yesterday’s statement by the Indigenous People of Biafra claiming that their leader, Nnamdi Kanu has not for once since his release from Kuje Prison in April flouted his bail conditions.

LOL is right. Because they have to be kidding.

Otherwise who did they think would be fooled into believing that Nnamdi Kanu has not flouted his bail conditions:
“Nnamdi Kanu never flouted his bail conditions because the court said he should not go for rallies or protests and he has never done that since his release. But citizens of Biafra and other parts of Nigeria want to see him, that is why you see him with people and these people come to his father’s house. He cannot chase those who want to see him away. Since his release he never called for any rally or protest or press conference. Don’t you know that if he wants to call the press he will call both local and international media? The court did not bar people from visiting him in his father’s compound. The court did not say he should not visit anyone in the society. Therefore, the security operatives have no justification to re-arrest him because he has never gone beyond their limit or held any rally or protest.”

Not are we sure that Emma Powerful, the author of this statement intentionally leave out some of, twist or maybe just misunderstood the conditions upon which Nnamdi Kanu was granted bail in April, it appears that he had the intention to mislead a lot of people with this statement.

[]Did you miss this? “Jesus is fiction; Nnamdi Kanu is real”

Just last week, investigative journalist, Kadaria Ahmed posted videos showing thousands of people gathered at the home of the IPOB leader in Abia State. In one of them, he is seen egging the shouting supporters on by raising his hands. One of the conditions upon which Justice Binta Nyanko granted Nnamdi, who is being tried for treason, bail is that he must never be in a crowd or in a gathering of more than ten people. Let’s even say from that video, he gets off “being in a crowd” on a technicality (after all, we don’t know that he called the crowd nor did he jump in their midst like the hero that he is), by our count, those on the balcony where Nnamdi was waving from are clearly more than ten.

Yet, we are not trying to be reactionary or hard on Mr Powerful in case last week’s incident is what he used as the basis of his statement. So let’s look at all the other times that Nnamdi Kanu clearly flouted his bail conditions (including speaking with both local and international media):

Being in a crowd of more than 10 people

When Justice Binta Nyako granted Nnamdi Kanu bail in April, it was on the condition that the IPOB leader must never be in a crowd or a gathering of more than 10 people. Yet, he showed up to this Shabbat Rally one weekend and addressed a more than a dozen people. Kanu must have either forgotten about his bail conditions or been oblivious to the fact that he was being recorded.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXZOtqU2Iis

Attending a rally.

Justice Nyako also stressed, “that the defendant must not attend any rally”.

He not only attended it, it appears he headlined it.

Granting an interview

As can be expected, the bail conditions stipulate that he must make himself available for trial at all times while shunning every media interview.

Watch Nnamdi Kanu shun a reporter

But Nnamdi Kanu obviously cannot be bothered with anyone – especially not a Nigerian Judge – ordering him not to speak with Al-Jazeera because he did. And he bared his heart about how “nothing seems to be working in Nigeria and how his demand for secession of some Southern parts of Nigeria “is not self-determination for the sake of it, “but because Nigeria is not functioning and can never function”.

Meeting with “dozens of people”

“And with that Kanu stands up and goes outside to meet the people who have waited hours to see him.” is how the Al Jazeera feature writer, Chika Oduah, ended her piece. Suggesting that Nnamdi Kanu knowingly breached his bail condition not to be a gathering “exceeding 10 people”.

At the beginning of her article, she’d written of the scene at Kanu’s residence where she interviewed him:

“I can’t allow large [groups of] people to basically congregate outside to see me … it’s like asking me not to breathe,” he [Nnamdi Kanu] says… On the other side of the parlour door, dozens of people are waiting to see Kanu. A throng of young men dressed in black guard the compound. They refer to Kanu as, “our supreme leader” or “his royal highness”.

The only difference between this recent video and the strong imagery painted by Chika Oduah is that from the video, we do not see Nnamdi actually “physically” meeting the people outside his home. Although both situation actually convey him “meeting with people” even if we do not know that he talked to them directly.

Another interview

This time he had an interview with local media, Vanguard Newspapers.
Politics / Over 100 ‘badoo Boys’ Arrested As Police, Opc Raid Gangs’ Hideouts by ridbay(m): 2:18pm On Jul 02, 2017

Police officers, alongside members of Odua Peoples Congress (OPC) on Saturday, reportedly raided different hideouts of the criminal gang in Ikorodu, Lagos State, popularly known as the “Badoo boys”.

The Badoo boys have been terrorising residents of Ikorodu and killing families, which led to increased agitation from the residents and subsequent intervention by the Police, who had several meetings with local vigilante to bring down the gang.

Daily Post reports that members of OPC and other vigilante groups who know the nooks and crannies of the area led heavily-armed police officers to some locations suspected to be the den of the group, where over 100 of them were apprehended.

According to a source, the recent attacks by the Badoo group, in which some lives were lost, compelled the police authority in the state to meet with the leader of the OPC, Gani Adams and his men.

“The serial attacks by those boys in Ikorodu are becoming a thing of worry for the police in the state; the police considered it imperative and expedient to seek for partnership of vigilante groups in Ikorodu, led by the OPC.

“Sincerely, the activities of those Badoo boys must be stopped; this massacre must not be allowed to go on unabated; it is seriously threatening the serenity of that town,” the source disclosed.

Politics / “God Showed Me A Vision In 1992 And I Became Governor” – Ortom by ridbay(m): 6:50am On Jul 02, 2017

overnor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, has said that he would not seek for a re-election in 2019, until he sees another vision from God.

Governor Ortom said that God would determine his ambition in 2019, adding that, it was God who asked him to contest in the first place.

He said God had shown him a vision in 1992 that he was going to be a Governor in Benue State, which became manifested 23 years after.

He said, according to Daily Post, “I saw vision in 1992 and God asked me to go and become the Governor of Benue State. I attempted to become Governor in 2012 but it was not possible until in 2015 when God said it was time.

“If God directs me that I should go for a second term, no one can stop me. But if God has not spoken, I won’t re-contest”, he said.

He, however, described as “distraction”, the pressure from some quarters for his re-election, saying he was barely 2 years in office and the development of the state was his utmost priority.

Talking about his achievements so far in 2 years in office, the Governor said, “one of the achievements of this government is that, we have been able to curb insecurity.

“Before we came in, there were insecurity here and there – kidnapping, robbery, cultism and all that; but through our amnesty programme, over 900 criminals surrendered their weapons and we are now living in peace”.

One civilian was killed and two others injured Saturday when four female bombers blew themselves up in Cameroon’s Far North, an area regularly targeted by Boko Haram jihadists, local sources told AFP.

The incident took place in Mora, near the northwestern border with Nigeria, during the early hours of Saturday morning, when four female bombers set off the deadly blasts near the edge of town, a source close to the security services said.

Mora is home to the headquarters of the first sector of the Mixed Multinational Force, an anti-insurgent regional force, as well as a large artillery unit of the Cameroonian army.

“There was one civilian victim and two injured,” the source said, adding that all four bombers also died.

The attackers were trying to reach the centre of town when they were spotted by members of the vigilance committee and troops, the source said.

They then detonated the bombs.

Details of the attack were confirmed to AFP by a source close to the local authorities.

Politics / Nnamdi Kanu Has Not Flouted His Bail Conditions – Ipob by ridbay(m): 6:28am On Jul 01, 2017

The Indigenous People of Biafra, on Friday, said its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, had not flouted his bail conditions.

It added that Kanu had neither held any rally nor protested as instructed by the court.

There have been calls for the re-arrest of Kanu due to his meetings with large gatherings and granting interview to media organisations.

IPOB on Friday, said Kanu had not violated the bail conditions given to him by the court.

IPOB spokesman, Emma Powerful said those who had been converging in thousands on Kanu’s father’s house in Umuahia, Abia State, came to see the IPOB leader on their own volition.

Powerful said, “Nnamdi Kanu never flouted his bail conditions because the court said he should not go for rallies or protests and he has never done that since his release. But citizens of Biafra and other parts of Nigeria want to see him, that is why you see him with people and these people come to his father’s house. He cannot chase those who want to see him away. Since his release he never called for any rally or protest or press conference.

“Don’t you know that if he wants to call the press he will call both local and international media? The court did not bar people from visiting him in his father’s compound. The court did not say he should not visit anyone in the society. Therefore, the security operatives have no justification to re-arrest him because he has never gone beyond their limit or held any rally or protest.”

“We are aware that anywhere he visited, people just gather to see who he is in person and he did not put himself in the position he is today – it is by the making of the Most High in Heaven. We wonder why people who fear his electrifying popularity are calling for his arrest – we know that the Nigerian government and her security agencies always like to intimidate people.”

Politics / I Will Collect My N4Billion From Sahara Reporters – Saraki by ridbay(m): 7:56pm On Jun 30, 2017

Senate President Bukola Saraki has said he would collect every penny of the N4 billion awarded to him against publisher of SaharaReporters, Omoyele Sowore.

A court had awarded N4 billion to Saraki on Thursday in a lawsuit against SaharaReporters for series of libelous articles against him.

In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, Saraki said he would use the money to support media organizations struggling to survive as well as lawyers handling pro bono cases for citizens.

Saraki said the judgement showed that Nigeria’s system could be trusted and redress could be sought.

“One thing is clear by the judgement, there are systems in place in our nation for all citizens to seek redress if they have been unfairly treated in any way.

“This judgement is a fulfillment of our promise that we will explore all legal means to seek redress for all the fabrications and mudslinging that Sahara Reporters has thrown at us over the years.

“This judgement demonstrates that our justice system can and will continue to protect the fundamental human rights of all citizens from being infringed by anyone. Moving forward, the purveyors of mischievous stories can learn from this precedent that has been set.

“The ruling by Justice Adeyinka Oyinloye, will serve as a deterrent to all those who profit by propagating ‘Fake News’ to blackmail innocent citizens or curry undue favours.

“I will like to assure all and sundry that I will not spare any legal efforts and expenses, both in Nigeria and abroad, necessary to recover every kobo of the cost awarded in his favour from the defendant.

“This judgement is definitely not a victory for the Senate President alone. It is a victory for all the victims of the falsehood which Sahara Reporters daily dole out to rubbish the reputation of innocent Nigerians, many of whom either out of fear, lack of the patience to consistently pursue a court case for years or lack of belief in the ability of the system to give them justice decided to live with the injury to their reputation. The judgement is another vindication for our country and her solid enthronement of the rule of law as against the rule of men.”

He added that the judgment would lead to true journalists who labour hard for the truth.

“He sees the verdict of the High Court against Sahara Reporters as a positive development with the potential to reassure individuals and firms who would in future come under undeserved attack by publications which spread falsehood aimed at maliciously casting them in bad light.

“The judgement provides a redeeming point for the noble profession of journalism which has as its sacred, cardinal principle the pursuit of facts at all times and in all situations. The journalists and news media who have devoted themselves to the pursuit of truth but appear to be overwhelmed by those who trade in falsehood and sensationalism now have a reason to be proud that they are on the right path. That is another meaning Dr. Saraki gives to this judgement.

On what he plans to use the money for, Saraki said; “The restitution from this judgement will be channeled to set up a Foundation whose aim will be to support pure and unadulterated investigative journalism and assist the families of real journalists that die in the line of duty.

“The money will also be used to support genuine publications whose owners are struggling to pay salaries of workers or meet their ever rising running cost. Part of the money will also be channelled to help lawyers who have been providing pro bono services to litigants, particularly, on cases bothering on enforcement of fundamental human rights.

“It should be noted that my methodical and dogged manner pursued the case despite the ceaseless barrage of false allegations thrown at me by the Sahara Reporters should assure all Nigerians that I maintain a solid belief in free press, free speech and responsible journalism and that I will do every thing legal to fight those who want to use journalism as a destructive, blackmail and oppressive instrument. This latter brand of journalism will not help our society and has no role to play in the emerging Nigeria”, he stated.

HST2: OBJECT ORIENTED PROGRAMMING LAB

Create a class called ShoppingCart.

Create a constructor that takes no arguments and sets the total attribute to zero, and initializes an empty dict attribute named items.

Create a method add_item that requires item_name, quantity and price arguments. This method should add the cost of the added items to the current value of total. It should also add an entry to the items dict such that the key is the item_name and the value is the quantity of the item.

Create a method remove_item that requires similar arguments as add_item. It should remove items that have been added to the shopping cart and are not required. This method should deduct the cost of the removed items from the current total and also update the items dict accordingly.

If the quantity of an item to be removed exceeds the current quantity of that item in the cart, assume that all entries of that item are to be removed.

Create a method checkout that takes in cash_paid and returns the value of balance from the payment. If cash_paid is not enough to cover the total, return "Cash paid not enough".

Create a class called Shop that has a constructor which takes no arguments and initializes an attribute called quantity at 100.

Make sure Shop inherits from ShoppingCart.

In the Shop class, override the remove_item method, such that calling Shop's remove_item with no arguments decrements quantity by one.

Crime / Most Stories About Kidnapper Evans On Social Media Are False – Abba Kyari by ridbay(m): 8:09am On Jun 30, 2017

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari who led the capture of billionaire kidnapper Evans has said most of the stories about the kidnapper on the internet was false.

Kyari in a Facebook post on Thursday said 90% of the stories about the suspect were fabricated.

“There is a need to clear the air on some Issues that are Misinforming/Misleading the Good members of the public who are Passionate about Fighting Crime.” Kyari said

“90 Percent of all Information Relating to the arrest of Evans and What Evans Said that’s being shared on Social Media and Some Print Media are False.”

“Just like most Nigerians, I wake up every morning and hear Different False Stories on Social Media pertaining to how we arrested Evans and what He Said.

“The Actual Strategy and Technology we used in Arresting Vampire, Evans and other Big Kidnappers is known to only Me and Very few Senior officers I am working together with in the FHQ” Abba added.

Abba Kyari say “a person Like Evans would Never have been arrested based on the few techniques that were officially mentioned or those Circulating on Social Media which are actually techniques already known to Criminals like him.”

The Assistant Commissioner of Police said Evans faced the media in two different occasions after his arrest by his team.

“I Urge Members of the Public to focus more on what they See or hear from Major Newspapers and Television Stations who have names to protect and avoid the Avalanche of Lies and Fictions that is coming out from blogs & Social Media everyday,” Abba added.

Crime / Evans Suit: What’s The Worst That Could Happen? by ridbay(m): 8:12pm On Jun 29, 2017

It’s only a suit asking for him to either be tried now or untied, but could Evans really be up to something here?

He may have nothing sinister in mind. After all he has confessed, it could be that Evans wants to suffer everything at once rather than have to spend so much time in detention before beginning a long trial that could end up with a severe sentence. If that’s the plan, then most persons will not be bothered.

There are thousands of persons in Nigerian prisons who are awaiting trial years after they were first detained. Evans supposedly does not want to be like them and he is employing the resources at his disposal to make that happen.

However, this could be the first of more to come. In that case, there should be something to fear.

The problems of the Nigerian judiciary are well documented. There are very many loopholes to exploit, leading often to the frustration of striking cases out on technicalities. The more obvious bad sides are the issues of the absence of incorruptibility. With enough financial persuasion, cases get turned in favour of persons who ordinarily should be guilty.
Will that happen in Evans’ case?

One could say the reason why the Police has taken its time to shown Evans to everyone to see is to make his crime as public as possible in order to rouse the consciousness of the public (and the judge who will try him) to the insidiousness of his acts. By so doing, it becomes presumably easier to make a case against him.

But that could backfire; the #FreeEvans folks are an example of how a media trial can work contrary to its purpose. With the right price for the right lawyer, it remains possible for Evans to trick his way out of what should seem a certain condemnation.

This paragraph from Sahara Reporters’ story on his suit explains Evans ultimate goal: “…he prayed the court for an order compelling the respondents to immediately release him unconditionally in the absence of any offence that will warrant his being charged to court”

Politics / Buhari Not On Life Support – Okorocha by ridbay(m): 5:13pm On Jun 29, 2017

Imo state governor, Rochas Okorocha on Thursday asked Nigerians to disregard a statement by Ekiti governor, Ayodele Fayose, that President Muhammadu Buhari is on life support.

Okorocha said this while speaking with State House correspondents in Abuja.

He disregarded Fayose’s statement as ‘uncharitable’.

Fayose on Wednesday had said Buhari was on life support and was only seen by three members of his cabal.

Politics / Only 3 Members Of Buhari’s Cabal Are Allowed Access To Him (read) by ridbay(m): 6:05pm On Jun 28, 2017

Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose has claimed President Muhammadu Buhari has been on life support in a West-End London Hospital.

He said this on Wednesday while addressing journalists in Ado-Ekiti.

Fayose stated that the audio message of President Buhari celebrating Eid-el-Fitri in Hausa language was “absolute lies.”

“No doubt, the audio message was only a damage-control strategy aimed at further deceiving Nigerians,” he said.

The governor gave a 48-hour ultimatum to the presidency to discountenance his claims, while stating that he will reveal more information to Nigerians.

“Today, it makes 53 days since our president left Nigeria to attend to his health challenges abroad. No official information as to his whereabouts and his state of health.

“Like every other Nigerians, I do not wish the president dead, I have therefore maintained dignified silence since we were told that the president embarked on his second medical trip abroad this year.

“However, the recorded audio message which was released by the Presidency as the president’s Ramadan message to Nigerians necessitated my setting the records straight today.

“The audio message does not represent the truth as our President does not only have voice impairment, he has been on life-support since June 6, 2017, at a West-End, London Hospital.”

He added that wife of the President, Aisha Buhari was not allowed to see the president when she visited London.

He said, “Only three Nigerians who are of the president’s cabal are allowed access to the president. I will keep their identities for now.

“Anyone with contrary claim should produce the president to Nigerians within the next 48 hours. I want to say emphatically that Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has not spoken to the president in the last one month. I expect him to prove me wrong.”

Politics / Fash Vs Nass: Five Quips From The Minister That Totally Shades Nass by ridbay(m): 7:05pm On Jun 27, 2017

He made observations that, as a Federal Minister, he was well entitled to make, and they came for him. In his response, he has taken no prisoners.

Babatunde Fashola’s response was long and bruising, fending off the personal attacks against him from the National Assembly. Here are five of the best quips from the riposte, and some attempt to help you understand what they mean.

1. “A budget is not cash. It is an approval of estimates of expenditure to be financed by cash from the Ministry of Finance. The Ministry of Finance has not yet released any cash for the Second Niger Bridge, so no money was returned.”

The Minister takes the National Assembly through a basic course in definition of terms, making the distinction between a budget as an estimate, and cash as money released.

2. “If the spokesperson was in tune with the Public Procurement Law which the National Assembly passed, he would realise that the Minister has no unilateral power to award such contracts whose values are in billions of Naira. All the new projects presented to the Federal Executive Council for approval were either federal roads requested by state governments or those put in the budget by the legislators to service their constituencies”

Can someone speak for the National Assembly but unaware of the laws passed by the same institution?

3. “It was a very basic principle of good planning to make provision for unforeseen contingencies.”

Can’t blame NASS much here; lawmaking does not really involve any good planning, does it?

4. “It shows the conflict between the Executive that wants to build big Federal Highways; Bridges; Power Plants; Rail; and Dams on one hand and Parliament that wants to do small things like bore holes, health centres, street lights and supplying grinding machines”

We can explain this: Legislators need to do just the minimum to get re-elected every four years, hence, the inclination to provide small gifts once in a while, to keep constituents happy enough, but hungry for some more little stuff. (Or not)

5. “Success should be defined by how many projects an administration is able to complete or set on the path of irreversible completion and not how many poorly funded contracts are awarded”

If only citizens held legislators accountable for how many completed national projects they personally have contributed to before granting them re-election.

Politics / 80% Of Military Recruits Are From The North – Group Cries Out by ridbay(m): 2:13pm On Jun 27, 2017

A civil rights organisation, Campaign Against Military Impunity (CAMI), has expressed concern over alleged recruitment scandal in the Nigerian Air Force (NAF).

The group alleged that the Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Sadiq Abubakar, had compromised standards in the recruitment exercise for non-commissioned officers from the North.

Executive Director of CAMI, Victor Coker, told newsmen in Abuja yesterday, that the government should carry out an audit of the exercise and courses going on in all the military training institutions.

“Presently at the Airforce Base in Kaduna, there is ongoing pre-training formalities and tests for successful recruits, where 80 per cent of them are Northerners,” CAMI said.

“To unravel this misnomer, there should be an audit of the courses going on in all the training institutions. The audit should look at the composition and last three batches of those in training.

“They were supposed to take 68 persons in each state; but after the normal recruitment, the Chief of Air Staff now brought over 2,000 names spread across the core Northern States.

“Out of this figure, only 30/40 was given to the South. This is not the first time it is happening. Such things have been done in DSS, EFCC, and even police, Army and the Navy.

“We keep on preaching One Nigeria, One Nigeria. But behind the empty slogan of One Nigeria lies bare-faced hypocrisy and grand design to sentence part of the country to perpetual slavery.”

According to him, Northerners have been so smart to shortchange the entire South even during previous population census exercises conducted by the National Population Commission (NPC),

“How can the desert be more populated than the tropical rain forest? This was how the population census was done before independence,” he queried.

NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Commodore Olatokunbo Adesanya, has since denied the allegation.

He said, “I think it is most advisable that the list of the people recruited should be made public first. Then, those making the claims can painstakingly go through the list.

“If there is any state that is not fairly represented, then, let them raise the alarm, rather than speculating. A list is not yet out, yet people are speculating that the North has been favoured.

“Don’t forget that each state should be fairly represented. If you have certified people and everybody in a state are not medically qualified, are you going to disregard everybody in that state?

“We operate with the highest standards and we do not compromise on standard, either medical, physical or academic.”

Politics / Any Nigerian Is Free To Do Business Anywhere In The Country – Wike by ridbay(m): 6:05am On Jun 27, 2017

Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike has said nobody has the right to issue quit notice to any Nigerian.

“Nobody should threaten anybody. All of us own this country. We must be our brother’s keepers”.

Governor Wike said that the unity of the country is necessary for the rapid development of the country.

He promised the Rivers Muslim Community that he will continue to sponsor them for Hajj as his administration believes in the spiritual upliftment of the people.

Politics / Buhari’s Eid Speech Is An Unnecessary Distraction To Osinbajo by ridbay(m): 9:18pm On Jun 26, 2017

President Buhari has been in the news for the past 48 hours, not for returning to Nigeria from a vacation that has now lasted 50 days, but for a speech apparently given by him in Hausa language to commemorate Eid-al-Fitr.

The contentious speech has generated a lot of buzz in media circles as to why the President of Nigeria would have to speak to the nation in the language of one of the many ethnic groups. It has drawn comparisons with the perception that former President Goodluck Jonathan was an ‘Ijaw President’, but even President Jonathan did not make national addresses in native Ijaw.

But why did President Buhari have to make the Eid-al-Fitr address in the first place? He has been away since May 7. In the intervening period, he was not present for the 50th anniversary of the Biafra declaration, and for the second anniversary of his administration. In his place, Acting President Yemi Osinbajo did the honours of delivering the remarks to commemorate both events.

Why, then, in the case of the feast was there a need for Buhari himself to have to make the address? Was it to convince Nigerians who suspect the President is becoming impaired in his speech that there is no cause to worry? Would an Eid-al-Fitr speech from the Acting President not be perceived as Presidential enough?

The threats of violence and ethnic tensions around the country have seen Osinbajo continue to conduct wide and varied consultations with leaders from different parts of the country, both North and South, and from key sectors including the media. In a bid to maintain peaceful co-existence, the Acting President has continued to demonstrate bold leadership that has crossed ethnic and religious divides.

With such stable and capable leadership in place, albeit on a temporary basis, there should have been no need for gimmicks that portray unnecessary ‘in-charge-ness’. It is bad enough that the President has stayed so long away from the country at the expense of taxpayers without a word from him or his handlers. When he finally speaks, it is not to update us on his health or when he returns, but on a matter that could easily be communicated by the Acting President.

It is a distraction for the Presidency and for the country that the Acting President could really do without right now.

Politics / How Buhari Reportedly Sidelined Nigerian Diplomat By Speaking Hausa In 1978 by ridbay(m): 5:22pm On Jun 26, 2017

On Sunday, President Muhammadu Buhari released an audio message to Nigerian Muslims during the Eid-l-Fitr celebration. This will be the first time Buhari will be speaking to Nigerians since he departed on medical vacation to the United Kingdom for the second time.

Many Nigerians received the news of the president’s audio message with elation – but Buhari and his team had other plans – the message was for a select few (only those who understood the Hausa language).

This decision has received a lot of backlash from Nigerians, but that’s not what this piece is about. In page 512 of Audacity on the Bound: a Diplomatic Odyssey, the author, Ambassador Olu Sanu narrated an experience he had with then Major General Buhari, who was the Minister of Petroleum at that time.

Sanu recounted how Buhari did not speak to him throughout the trip to West Germany, now Germany. He added that on arrival in the European country, Buhari spoke entirely in Hausa throughout to the Ambassador-in-post.

Politics / #2019infocus: 5 Things INEC Needs To Get Right Before The Next Elections by ridbay(m): 5:17pm On Jun 25, 2017

It is almost 20 months to the 2019 General Elections with elections into the Office of the President, 30 governorship seats and hundreds of legislative seats at the state and federal levels.

It looks like there is still a lot of time left, but we all know how time can move fast and events creep up on us. This is why it is important for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to commence preparations for the elections.

In order to have hitch-free, credible elections, here are 5 things that INEC must get right before then:

1. Get Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for states: There are currently 33 states without INEC Resident Electoral Commissioners, without whom elections in those states cannot hold, elections cannot be planned and held going by the provisions of the Constitution and the Electoral Act. To fill these vacancies, 27 persons were nominated for appointment or reappointment as RECs of which 15 have been confirmed by the Senate and 12 are still undergoing screening. This leaves six slots to even have nominees. The more nominations and confirmations are delayed, the more the negative effect it will have on election planning.

2. Update the Voters’ Register: A voter registration exercise needs to commence quickly to capture previously unregistered voters, produce permanent voters’ cards and to also enable voters who have changed location to transfer their voters’ cards to those locations. A failure to do this efficiently could significantly affect voter turnout.

3. Incorporate more technology into elections: The recent amendments to the Electoral Act have given INEC a license to use technology as much as possible in elections, including the introduction of electronic voting. The expectation is the use of technology will improve electoral processes, from voter registration and voting to collation of results. It is important that INEC either internally or in conjunction with external contractors start developing technology that will be deployed for various aspects of the electoral process and commence its roll-out.

4. Use elections before 2019 to test new ideas: Between now and 2019, there are at least two governorship elections in Osun and Ekiti as well as numerous parliamentary elections around the country. This provides an opportunity for INEC to use these elections to test new ideas, such as those that incorporate technology, identify mistakes and solve them before roll-out during the 2019 General Elections.

5. Enforce campaign spending limits and oversight: One constant complaint is that there is too much money in Nigerian politics, and one needs lots of money to even aspire within a party, talk less of running. Granted, politics is an expensive venture world over, but in other countries, there are laws that ensure strict oversight over how campaign funds are raised and spent. Even though the Electoral Act contains laws to oversee how parties administer their finances, and how candidates raise their campaign funds and the maximum limits of spending relative to offices, these laws are never enforced and amount to nothing more than paper tigers. While our campaign finance laws are in dire need of reform, INEC should make an effort to at least enforce the ones that currently exist.

If these are implemented, having a more credible general elections in 2019 will not be borne out of false hope.

Politics / Police Say They Are Under Pressure To Release Billionaire Kidnapper, Evans by ridbay(m): 9:18am On Jun 25, 2017

The Police, Lagos Command, has said that the force is being pressurized to released billionaire kidnapper, Evans.

Acting Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Galadanshi Dasuki, while addressing news men on Saturday at the Command Headquarters, Ikeja, said that the Police were not in a hurry to release Evans, despite calls from different quarters to do so, Daily Trust reports.

He said, “Evans has been a kidnapper for a long time and has been on the wanted list of the Police in Anambra, Abuja, Enugu, Edo and Lagos states. He also has a criminal gang, some of whom have been arrested in Enugu and Lagos. But there are still more out there. Therefore, this needs a painstaking investigation.

“Besides, we need to under study him as well as debrief him. By so doing, we intend to use his tactics to get others. He will eventually be charged to court after investigation is concluded.”

Politics / Ebonyi Gov’s Wife Calls For Arrest Of Policewoman For House-help’s Abuse by ridbay(m): 5:00pm On Jun 24, 2017

Wife of Ebonyi State governor, Rachael Umahi has called for the arrest of a policewoman for allegedly pouring hot water on her 15-year-old house-help.

Umahi made the call after officials from her office and the State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development rescued the girl from the policewoman at her home in Mile 50, Abakaliki.

Chief Press Secretary to the governor’s wife, Donatus Owo in a statement on Saturday said the victim is receiving treatment.

“The matter has been reported to the police while the victim was taken to Police Clinic for medical treatment,’’ she said.

According to the victim, Chinyere Igwe, she had lived with the policewoman for two years within which she suffered various forms of maltreatment.

Igwe said she was preparing soup on that fateful day when her employer got annoyed that she did not prepare the soup according to her instruction.

“Only my mother is alive and I have been living with my madam for over two years now. This is as a result of my father’s death coupled with my mother’s financial handicap.

“I failed to follow her instruction and in anger, she came out and carried the pot of soup together with the egusi (melon) and threw at me and it landed on my back.

“She also carried iron and hit me on my body and ordered me to bend down and raise my leg up but I refused because my back was paining me seriously.

“She locked me up in a room while she went to boil water to pour on me.

“I pleaded with her to have mercy on me but she went inside and brought tear gas, then I started crying when she rushed to get hot water and poured on me,” Igwe said.

She added that the policewoman’s husband also hit her.

“Her husband also beat me up, but he was not aware that I had such injury because it was in the night. He later apologised and asked his wife to use honey to treat my back,” Igwe said.

The suspect, Mrs. Joy Okochi, however, claimed told the team from the Government House that she did not pour hot water on the girl intentionally.

Politics / Biafrans, Hear The Voices Of Reason And Wisdom by ridbay(m): 9:48am On Jun 24, 2017

Fellow Nigerians, I’m sure you’ll agree with me that this is a season of acute paranoia and schizophrenia in our dear beloved country. But we must not give up. We have more to gain in an atmosphere of peace and unity and more to lose in a condition of war and lawlessness.

The past few weeks have brought out the bitterness and abject bigotry in some of us. I once read somewhere that “anger beclouds reasoning.” Seriously, nothing could be truer. I’m happy that a few bold and courageous Nigerians have risen up to the occasion in an effort to avert the cataclysmic fall and demise of the great country called Nigeria. Some great writings have since emerged from Nigerians and friends of Nigeria in other African countries. Before I go on, I must pause to salute a great leader, visionary and lover of dialogue and peace. I am talking of none other than Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, who has tirelessly engaged Nigerians from all walks of life. Professor Osinbajo just seems to grow in his role as acting President of Nigeria. He exudes the confidence and bearing that has recently been lacking in our leaders. He demonstrates both in his gait and in his words and action the quiet self-assurance of a man who knows his onions and understands his abilities and his weaknesses.

No price is too much to pay for peace, unity and stability and, clearly, the Acting President knows this and is determined that Nigeria must achieve this. The dogged determination in which he has pursued the drive to keep us one nation can only be richly commended and resoundingly applauded. We are seeing a true statesman and leader at work. In a democracy, a good leader must exhaust all peaceful means. Kill and go methods can never work effectively and eventually in cases such as this. It is to his credit that Professor Osinbajo appreciates this and is working to find a solution that will not lead to any bloodshed or even tears or recriminations. We must all rise to support him. Now, I will share a few insightful pieces with you on this page today. I’m happy that the Arewa youths have suppressed some of their anger. Their new strategy is more potent and effective because of the use of powerful satire. On June 19, 2017, the Northern Youths wrote a mail to Acting President Professor Yemi Osinbajo.

I reproduce extracts of this letter as follows:

“(W)e begin this letter by commending your efforts towards finding a lasting solution to the lingering Igbo-induced crisis that is undoubtedly overheating the polity. We sincerely believe Your Excellency’s good intentions as shown by your prompt and genuine actions towards ensuring peace and stability in holding talks with leaders of the North and the South-East.

PAST EXPERIENCES
1. The Igbo of Eastern Nigeria manifested their hatred for Nigeria’s unity barely five years after we gained our independence from the British when on January 15, 1966, their army officers carried out the first-ever mutiny that marked the beginning of a series of crisis which has profoundly altered the course of Nigeria’s history.
2. ……
3. In line with the Igbo plan, General Aguiyi-Ironsi took advantage of the vacuum and ….. appropriated the coup and attempted to consolidate it for his people.
4. Army officers of the Northern Region were eventually compelled to execute a counter-coup on July 29, 1966 ….. This, unfortunately, resulted in mob action …… (and) the death of many Igbos.
5. And when Lt. Col. Yakubu Gowon, from the North, took over….. the Igbo through Lt. Col. Ojukwu, characteristically refused to recognise Gowon.
6. Ojukwu declared the secession of the Igbo people from Nigeria and the formation of the Republic of Biafra on May 30, 1967 resulting in a civil war that led to the tragic deaths of more than 2 million Nigerians.
7. ……The Igbo eventually capitulated and conceded defeat in an unconditional surrender, not an armistice, on January 15, 1970.

BIAFRA REINCARNATED
1. ……(O)ut of the blues, the Igbo have over the last 2 years regrouped and fiercely and openly started discussing Biafra again under Ralph Uwazuruike of the ….. MASSOB.
2. This was given greater impetus by a more furious Igbo rogue group called the Indigenous People Of Biafra IPOB under Nnamdi Kanu, …. spreading hate and war messages across the nation …
3. ….
4. KANU and IPOB ….. continue to preach hatred and war virtually every day, and not for once did any Igbo leader call them to order. Instead, many of the leaders, including the deputy senate president, pay Kanu courtesy calls to prove that he is speaking for the entire Igbo. ……
5. …..
6. ……

GROUNDS FOR SUSPICION
… (W)e strongly believe that the gruesome picture that the Biafran agitation represents is beyond a few people showcasing to Your Excellency that the Igbo will eventually heed the call for peace and desist from their dangerous campaign against Nigeria. We base our concerns on the following grounds.

1. Despite the fact that the Igbo have been the most accommodated and tolerated of all the ethnic groups of Nigeria, the renewed …. vile threats and insults on Northern leaders and their people, culture and religions ….. can hardly be addressed through a series of two hours dialogues.
2. As if to prove this, barely hours after Your Excellency’s meeting with the South-East leaders, the Biafran Igbo openly disowned the leaders and dissociated themselves from the meeting. …….
3. More disturbingly, Kanu has openly claimed that the Biafran agitators have amassed arms in readiness for a war of secession … 4. …. 5. ………..

OUR CONCERNS
1. …..
2. ……. (W)e are strongly concerned that nothing short of granting their Biafran dream will suffice.
3. …. (I)n their domain in the South East, Northerners and Westerners are as much as possible disenfranchised from owning any businesses whereas, in Kano alone, they own not less than 100,000 shops across all the business districts.
4. That since the younger generation of Nigerians makes up for more than 60 percent of the nation’s population, it is our hope that they inherit this country in better shape so that they can build a much better future for themselves and their offsprings …
5. … (W)hat they say against us is what they truly mean and intend – “Kill everyone in the Zoo” (North). Your Excellency, we cannot afford to discard this as mere mischief as the utterances that caused the terrible Rwandan genocide still resonates in our minds.
6. ….

OUR STAND
We, therefore, demand that the only enduring solution to this scourge that is being visited on the nation is complete separation of the states presently agitating for Biafra from the Federal Republic of Nigeria through a peaceful political process by:
1. Taking steps to facilitate the actualization of the Biafran nation in line with the principle of self- determination as an integral part of contemporary customary international law.
2. ……
3. ….
4. ….. State parties to these international documents are obliged to uphold the primacy and realisation of this right …
5. ……

PRAYERS
1. Aware that the right of self-determination in international law is the legal right for a “people” that allows them to attain a certain degree of autonomy from a sovereign state through a legitimate political process, we strongly demand for a referendum to take place in a politically sane atmosphere where all parties will have a democratic voice over their future and the future of the nation.
2. …..
3. ….
4. ….

CONCLUSION
Your Excellency, we want to reiterate our high respect for your office and acknowledge the efforts you are making to lower tensions. ……. … (W)e do not see this clamour for Biafra as an issue over which a single drop of blood should be shed, we … insist that the Igbo be allowed to have their Biafra and for them to vacate our land peacefully so that our dear country Nigeria could finally enjoy lasting peace and stability.
Signed

In response to this sometimes satirical letter from the Arewa Youths, which I fear some people took too seriously, one Igbo commentator appositely stated as follows: The storm is gathering just like it did before the 1966 progrom started …
1. From my limited knowledge of Northerners, especially Muslims, if you taunt Islam in any manner they react promptly but if you offend them politically they bid their time. …. Igbos, on the other hand, have no political culture.
2. …. As soon as Buhari came on stream MASSOB, IPOB, BIM etc suddenly woke up from their slumber. …. To worsen matters Radio Biafra was established in London, not to mobilize the Igbos into political consciousness (which they lack) but to seek secession, insult other tribes that have been accommodating Igbos and constantly attack the person of the elected President of Nigeria. …. Why are ‘humans’ complaining that they were asked to vacate the zoo to go and inhabit their palaces? Great contradiction.
3. Suddenly, IPOB is the only group and Nnamdi Kanu is the only person that loves the Igbos. All those that contributed in many ways to rebuild Igboland after the civil war have become enemies. …. It’s only in Igboland that young men with no track record of achievement seek relevance by rubbishing the persons and achievements of their leaders. …. These maligned leaders were the same people that ensured that Kanu was not left to rot in jail. Or does he think his release was facilitated by the noise of Emma Powerful?
4. ……
5. IPOB/MASSOB cannot save Igbos because you can’t give what you don’t have. The only things they have are propaganda, empty boasts, threats, insults and territorial and political ambition. They lack political foresight, political retrospect, political and economic blueprint for Igbos.
….. His family (Nnamdi Kanu) is safe in London so he can afford to ask others to leave their businesses and return home to nothing.
6. Nnamdi Kanu …. now perceives himself as a demigod and wants to test d will of d federal government. He should be prepared for a very long spell in jail.
7. It is pertinent at this point to remind Kanu/IPOB that at a time Ibrahim Shekarau had Igbos as Special Advisers/Assistants in Kano, Fashola had an Igbo man as Commissioner in Lagos, his state, Abia was hounding other Igbos out of the Abia state civil service bcoz they were non-indigenes what did Kanu do as an Igbo Champion?

CONCLUSION
….The different leadership groups in the east, …. already know our stand …. which is regional autonomy/true federalism. …. let’s have stable political character by standing and defending that position like other southern groups. Therein lies our respect as a people and that is our position of strength and safety. Igbos cannot be deceived by groups of Okada riders, Barrow pushers, bus conductors etc demonstrating and shouting Biafra, Biafra.
Signed

I feel that the above letter by this Igbo commentator would serve as a sobering riposte to those warriors in society, who hardly know better and are attracted to the hate campaign of the Nnamdi Kanus of this nation. It is clear that the mainstream Igbos know that their lot is better served in a big unified Nigeria than in a fractional, fratricidal and fractious Igboland, by whatever name it may be called.

The next piece and my final pick encapsulates the real issues so succinctly: “The Ibos want Biafra. The North wants Ibo’s exit. The Yorubas want Ibo’s exit. The Ibos are saying “we have investments in your areas and cannot leave them”, and the fight is being cooked. Governors are sharing bailout funds. Workers salaries are not paid. Ministers and Senators are looting the poor. Hausa man sleeps under the bridge as Alamajiri. The poor Yoruba man sleeps under the bridge as Alaye. The poor Ibo man sleeps under the bridge as agbero. Do not allow the agitation of an Ibo man who lives in UK or USA for Biafra cause the killing of the Ibo man in Adamawa. The rich hate us that much. The problem in the country is not the agitation of any ethnic group but the unity of the elite and the disunity of the masses. Sad to note; All the Governors love themselves; All the past Presidents love themselves; All the senators love themselves; All the top government officials love themselves; All the looters love themselves; Why can’t you and I love ourselves? Why can’t we combine efforts and fight them? Why do we fight ourselves? Why do we allow them the freedom we don’t have? Remember, a good Nigeria is better than a good Arewa, Oduduwa or Biafra…”

I have reproduced salient extracts from these letters to show that the majority of well-meaning Nigerians love this country and its unified whole. Only those who wish to profit for their own selfish ends are beating the drums of war. They will not succeed. The will of the majority always prevails.

Politics / Melaye Recall: Mahmoud’s Chance To Be A Jega by ridbay(m): 9:33pm On Jun 23, 2017

The 2019 elections are going to commence in less than 20 months time. Politicians and political parties have began their scheming and in the months that lead up to the election days, no other Nigerian becomes as important as the Chairman of INEC.

But for Prof Mahmoud, the moment of focus has come early, with the hugely important recall process that has been initiated against Senator Dino Melaye.

In acknowledging receipt of the petition of the people of Kogi West, INEC has kicked off the procedure according to the Constitution which could lead to Melaye becoming the first ever member of parliament to ever get the boot from constituents.

2015 was the year Nigeria dumped a sitting Government for the first time in its democracy. At the centre of the sometimes raucous process was a calm hand of control in the person of Prof Attahiru Jega. That moment with Elder Orubebe remains a TV and political moment for the ages.

Going by what we know about Senator Melaye, it can be expected that he could contrive some spectacle similar to that of the unfortunate Orubebe in 2015. Prof Mahmoud will need to channel his inner 'Jega' in such situation.

Of course there’s the chance that nothing will happen in the end and Melaye still continues till 2019.

However, Nigerians would see this as the litmus test, the preview to the impending drama as we look towards electiontide.
