Car Talk / Re: Ford Cars Quite Explicit by ridbay(m): 10:37am On Jan 05
Good day

Please add me to the Ford Group
08078197526.

I have Ford Edge 2014 I bought as Tokunbo.

The first time I changed the engine oil, I was told to use hardex 5w-30

After two months, it started writing "Low engine oil pressure level" on the dashboard.

I bought two litres of hardex to top it up but the warning won't go away and my car shuts down after three minutes of running..
What do I do?

Politics / Rule Us Out Of The Agitation For Secession – Yoruba Northern Leader by ridbay(m): 7:08am On Aug 02, 2017

The Yoruba communities in the North and FCT, yesterday, dissociated themselves from the agitation for the creation of Oduduwa Republic.

The Acting President General of Yoruba Communities in the 19 Northern states and Abuja, Pat Jimoh Aiyelangbe, highlighted this in Kano in reaction to a recent publication credited to Yoruba Liberation Command (YOLICOM), calling for the Oduduwa Republic.

According to Daily Trust, He said, “Our president general died recently and before he passed on he never discussed anything like that with me or any principal officer of our association. So, as far as Yoruba communities are concerned here in the North, we are not behind the agitation for the Oduduwa Republic.

“The agitators should rule us out of it; we have not had any discussion with anybody about Yoruba secession and therefore we are not supporting it,” he said.

The leader said Yoruba communities were better off in Nigeria and would continue to work for its unity and progress.

“You know, when a young man is looking for money, he will use any opportunity that comes his way. But even at that one has to look for a better way to earn money. To be honest with you, the agitators of Oduduwa Republic are looking for nothing but money,” he said.

He urged Yoruba communities in northern Nigeria to remain calm and respect their host communities, assuring that the leadership would do everything possible to resolve the matter amicably.

Politics / Reuben Abati: Floods And The Rainmakers Of Lagos Island by ridbay(m): 8:47am On Jul 18, 2017

“To live in Lagos Island, these days, one needs to engage the services of rainmakers during the rainy season”, a friend who lives in that part of Lagos told me the other day. The job of a rainmaker, as known in our traditional communities, is actually to stop the rain from falling or to divert the rain to other locations, to allow people to hold an event without the threat of a heavy rainfall disturbing guests and participants. In those days when social parties used to be held more on open fields rather than event centres, the rainmaker was a necessary component to ensure positive outcomes. He deploys chants and an appeal to the supernatural, the invisible spiritual consciousness, to halt nature from taking a disruptive course. But who has ever heard of anyone stopping the rains from falling on a permanent basis?

My friend said that was not the intention, but that at the last Landlords/Residents Association meeting that was held in the estate where he lives in Lagos Island, one of the ideas that came up was that every rainy season, the estate could engage the services of rainmakers, to protect the estate from heavy rainfall and flooding. Someone reportedly actually recommended an uncle of his who is said to be a renowned rainmaker! I dismissed the idea as hare-brained and impracticable.

But it is possible to understand the reason for this desperation. The last time it rained heavily in Lagos, about a week or more ago, the better part of the Island was flooded. On Ahmadu Bello Way, a fellow was seen swimming comfortably, two men jumped into their canoes and rowed around with relish. The nearby ocean and rivers had spilled onto the road, due to the rise in the water level, resulting in the displacement of animals from their natural habitat, pollution and destruction.

The pictures were shown of a fish that was found in the flood, and of a crocodile that followed the flow of water into living spaces. Vehicles and homes were submerged. In some homes, the families were trapped upstairs, the water level having travelled as high as the windowsill. When some families finally managed to escape, they had to relocate to hotels or the homes of family and friends. Families were disorganised and separated. Some people came down with fever and water borne diseases and many are yet to recover. The state government had to close down the road.

Given the number of high profile businesses in that part of the city, the financial worth of recorded losses was huge. Real estate investment in Victoria Island alone is worth over $12 billion and with those structures being assailed regularly by acidic flood; it won’t be long before they gave way. The inherent paradox here is that whereas capitalism exploits nature and its resources for profit, it is in turn destroyed by it.

Flooding is a major, global environmental crisis, and the effect has always been devastating. Since 1960, Nigeria has been exposed to perennial flash and river floods. In the 80s, the overflow of the Ogunpa river caused so much damage in Ibadan, resulting in the popular phrase: “Omiyale”. The identified reason was that people were throwing garbage into the river; drainages and other water channels had also been blocked with refuse. The release of water from the Oyan dam also in other years resulted in massive flooding affecting places like Ogunpa, Challenge and Eleyele in Ibadan, and when the Ogun dam is drained, several parts of Ogun State are flooded. Each time water is released from the Lagdo dam in Cameroon there is flooding in Benue and Taraba states, farmlands are destroyed, raising fears about food crisis.

There have also been reports of flooding in the coastal plains of Nigeria, in the plains of the Niger Delta, the Rivers Niger and Benue particularly, and in the Plateau area whenever the Lamingo dam overflows. The worst flood in Nigeria occurred between July and November 2012. Thirty states out of 36 states of the Federation were affected, 2.1 million people were displaced, 363 people died, 6, 000 houses were destroyed. It was the worst flood in 40 years.

Whenever there is a major case of flooding in Nigeria, the standard response by government is to announce a relief and rehabilitation fund and express profound sympathy. The Nigerian government is certainly very good at expressing sympathy! In 2012, the Jonathan administration announced the immediate release of N17.6 billion. This year, Acting President Osinbajo responded in similar manner by approving the release of N1.6 billion. In some other parts of the world, steps are taken to ensure that the effect of flooding is mitigated, and controlled on a sustainable basis. Throwing money at the problem without any strategic plan to address the natural and artificial causes of flooding has not helped Nigeria over the years. Apparently, the only people who enjoy flooding are the government officials who manage these funds. Since 1980 and the award of a N10 billion contract, the channelization of the Ogunpa River in Ibadan is yet to be completed, 37 years later!

Obviously, the problem of flooding is not likely to disappear so soon. The Federal Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Water Resources and the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) have announced, following the floods this year in Lagos (losses already defined above), Jos (38 people died, 200 houses destroyed); Suleja (13 dead, 500 missing, 100 homes destroyed) and Kaita, Katsina (2,000 people displaced, 150 houses destroyed) that there is likely to be much worse flooding in 30 states of the Federation between July and November 2017. This sounds like a possible re-enactment of the 2012 scenario. While environmental habits may be responsible for much of the flooding that occurs, the key message that perennial flooding conveys is partly the real dangers of global warming and climate change.

African countries are negatively affected by this phenomenon and with most Nigerian communities located in low-lying areas, heavy rainfall could often result in ocean surge, flooding, erosion, or an imbalance in the ecosystem. In Nigeria, we have not yet developed mechanisms for managing the vagaries of nature. We take things for granted as a people, and as government. We defy nature and pay the price for so doing. In the absence of a functional waste management system in our cities, people continue to throw garbage into the seas and drainages. Managing the risks of climate change and environmental challenges is not a job for rainmakers; it requires more strategic thinking in terms of urban renewal, citizen education and policy execution.

Much of the disasters that we face today with increased flooding and our climate-sensitive agricultural sector was long foretold. More than a decade ago, for example, Professor Benjamin Akpati of the Nigeria Institute of Oceanography and Marine Research used to warn both Lagosians and the Federal government about the chaotic spread of residential developments in Lagos Island, a part of Lagos that has always been water-logged. In the 60s, the beachfront of the Atlantic was more than a mile away from where it is today. Professor Akpati argued that the aggressive extension of constructions into the river space would lead to a day when with a dramatic rise in the water level, the entire Lagos Island would drown or disappear into the water. Nobody listened.

Government after government kept approving the reclamation of land from the sea. Today, many buildings in Lagos Island are practically sitting on a foundation of water. Reclamation continues unabated, from Ilubirin to Park View to Lekki, and beyond; on the other side of the island, the sea is being chased further away. Recently, the Lagos state government further decided to take over Otodo-Gbame and 38 other waterfront communities, the poor who live there are still protesting, and have since gone to court to secure a restraining injunction, for they remember what happened to old Maroko and other spaces that the government took away from the poor and gave to the rich.

There is even a project in Lagos Island called Eko Atlantic City, which when fully developed would be a mini-city on top of the ocean. The Nigeria elite has developed a taste for living “inside water” and yet when the water overflows into their compounds and sitting rooms, they raise an alarm about what is at best, self-inflicted injury.

This probably explains why when the recent floods occurred in Lagos Island, most Lagosians living in the Mainland turned the incident into a matter of class warfare. They laughed at the elite living on the island. A plot of land in some high-brow parts of the Island is as expensive as $2 million and yet when it rains heavily and the ocean overflows its banks, the people flee. “The rich also cry”, someone said. “Evans does not allow me stay in Magodo, I cannot go to Lekki because of flood, I am afraid of Badoo in Ikorodu, where do I now live?”, another asked.

I don’t find the agony of the Victoria Island elite amusing, but I think beyond the concern about drainages and the way we treat the environment, the Lagos state government should put a stop to further reclamation of land from the sea. The old story was that the state government had built barriers and embarkments along the Bar Beach but in the past two years, those barriers have not saved Lagos Island from ocean surge.

Man may have developed the capacity to tame nature, after all, there are cities and houses built undersea, but with all his endowments, man remains a slave of nature. Human beings are constantly seeking unity with nature, to reduce their fears of its enormity and therefore master it, but through our interaction with the environment that is outside of us; we disrupt nature and create new patterns that violate the ecosystem and the cosmic harmony that we seek.

We cut down the trees in the forest, we pollute the environment, we fail to manage human waste, but because nature is dynamic and mercurial, it fights back and we pay the price. In the South West, ocean surge, blocked drainage, and failed dams are the problem, in the East and the South East, erosion and flood, in the Benue and Plateau, flood and mismanagement of dams, in the North, deforestation and flooding. Nigeria’s climate is definitely changing and we are all at risk and it could get worse.

In May, scientists reported that the Antarctica’s ice sheet is melting more rapidly into the sea, the effect of which is a rise in sea levels across the world, placing the world’s coastal cities at great risk. This would include cities like Lagos, of course, and the entire Niger Delta region. Increase in green gas emission and global temperatures could even make the projected scenarios more devastating. The prediction is that sometime in the future, there could be another Noah’s flood. If that happens, many inhabitants of low-lying coastal areas would be forced to abandon their homes and relocate.

Even in Europe and Asia where the technology for invasive environmental activity is advanced, recent natural phenomena have indicated the limits of technology. In Nigeria, many communities and coastal islands have since disappeared due to erosion and ocean surge, and in the North, deforestation and desertification have proved fatal. Now imagine a scenario some day when all residents of Lagos Island and other coastal parts of Nigeria would have to flee inland. A disastrous environmental crisis in Lagos, which accounts for about 40% of the Nigerian economy could prove apocalyptic for both the country and the populace, and this is precisely why the Federal Government must take a special interest in Lagos State and general matters of the environment. To save our corner of the Earth, we must adapt to the realities of the new age, and change the way we live.

Politics / Diezani Loot: Has She Made It Harder For Women? by ridbay(m): 8:33pm On Jul 17, 2017

Let’s face it, everybody is looking for reasons to give women less roles in the public life.

As much we want to see society advance and push forward the topics of equality amongst genders and greater opportunities for women in Governance, there will always be groups who argue against it.

Alison-Madueke, who has been hunted for corruption and money laundering by local and foreign anti-graft agencies, was one of a historic number of women in the cabinet of former President Goodluck Jonathan. For five years and against the will of many others in the Jonathan camp, she held sway over the nation’s economic wheel, dishing out contracts according to her pleasing. Her “performance” and firm grip of the role earned both the envy of many and the admiration of the international community, leading up to her role in OPEC.

The former Petroleum Minister arguable wielded more power in the Jonathan Government than the then President himself. If she did not make any decisions relating to the administration and management of the Oil industries, it was probably because she did not need to.

Such powers, it would now seem, were not supposed to be given to her, following the monumental allegations of millions of dollars that are leveled against her. With the nation’s treasury source at her disposition, she, as it were, stationed an outlet in her foreign investments where the good seemed to pour out, at the expense of the Nigerian people.

She may not have held an elected office like former Speaker of the House, Honourable Patricia Etteh, but Alison-Madueke is probably the woman to have wielded the most power in Nigeria’s politics at least in the democratic era. The similarity in the bearing tags of corruption and financial malpractice between the two would seem to be an argument against granting very high authority to women.

An argument against that would be that Alison-Madueke was, in fact, not the “strongest” woman in the Jonathan administration, given the role of ‘Coordinating Minister’ played by the veteran Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. The highly respected former Vice President of the World Bank, while with her own army of detractors, somehow managed to gain the acclaim of persons on both sides of the partisan divide, though we remember she apparently refused to admit that the country, in the terminal days of the Jonathan administration, was drifting into a state of being broke.

Beside Okonjo-Iweala, the former Director of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Arunma Oteh, also faced the whip of scrutiny in her running of the securities body. But she is not involved in any anti-corruption queries, now serving as a Vice President of the World Back. There is also the former Minister of Environment, Amina Mohammed, whose credibility from her MDGs days has seen her rise to the position of the Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations.

It would therefore be unconscionable to ask if there’s any motivation to increase the opportunities for women to offer meritorious public service because of the present travails of Alison-Madueke.

If the ratio of accused to serving public officials appears to be higher for women than men, it would not necessarily amount to a confirmation that women should not be given more public opportunities.

Politics / Ideo Of 10 Women Abducted From Police Convoy Surfaces Online (watch) by ridbay(m): 5:24pm On Jul 17, 2017

The insurgent group, Boko Haram have released a video of 10 women believed to be ones abducted from a military/police convoy in Borno state some weeks ago.

Although, the Nigerian police have refuted claims that there was an abduction.

In the video published by SaharaReporters, one Amina Adam Gomdia, speaking in eloquent Hausa, describes five of the women in their midst as public servants who are also breadwinners in their families. Gomdia introduces herself as a lecturer at the Federal College of Fisheries, Baga.

The second woman who speaks on the video gives her name as Deborah Philipus. She says that right from the minute they were abducted, Boko Haram has taken care of them, including treating their injuries, and that they have not lacked food, water or other necessities.

“We are grateful to you,” she says, referring to Boko Haram, “but the Government of Nigeria should not say we were not abducted, indeed we were abducted,” she says.

Politics / Die-put: Why Is Diezani Preparing For Jail Time? by ridbay(m): 1:50pm On Jul 17, 2017

Diezani Alison-Madueke, the former strong woman of Nigeria’s oil sector, has a dark cloud of money laundering indictments over her but she’s not afraid of going to jail.

In an audio recording obtained by investigators, Alison-Madueke was furious on the apparent sloppiness of her laundering aides, Kola Aluko and Jide Omokore. She was livid against the two for buying up luxurious properties that could be traceable to her. Through their companies under the name of “Atlantic”, Aluko and Omokore enabled the former Minister to divert ridiculous sums of money running into multi millions of dollars.

Though it is not certain where or when the audio was recorded, she is not afraid that the full extent of their murky dealings will be revealed, claiming that she “will be happy to escort all of you to jail along with myself. I said, in fact, you’ll be shocked by what I will do. Because when it comes to that, I will come out and tell the Nigerian people this is what happened”, according to Premium Times.

Alison-Madueke probably feels short-changed by both men. Feeling betrayed, she complained about the inferior cost of furniture which did not sum up to $4m. She adds that she “will come out openly and say it so that they can judge me openly. And then all of us go and sit on the gate”.

With the evidence being curated, there is a significant possibility that Alison-Madueke may face jail term if the US Department of Justice should make a successful case against her. Her readiness to tell all that transpired would appear to be an admission of guilt already.

Other oil scandals involving Mohammed Adoke and her former boss Goodluck Jonathan would add to the pressure that she could be prosecuted but that may also be the source of consolation that, whatever happens, she would not be the only big name to be taken down by the foreign authorities.

Former President Jonathan’s wife, Dame Patience, also faces her own troubles. They may not get to share cells but would that be another source of comfort for Diezani?

Politics / I Endorse You For Second Term | Tinubu Tells Ganduje by ridbay(m): 11:59am On Jul 17, 2017

National leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu on Sunday urged Nigerians to keep praying for the recovery of President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said this while speaking in Kano during a condolence visit to Governor Abdullahi Ganduje over the death of Dan Masani Kano, Alhaji Maitama Sule.

Tinubu said “there is nothing anybody can do in the face of health challenge”.

He said: “The President did not lie to us. He told us he was ill; and he needs to take care of himself. I don’t see any crisis about this situation. We are a nation that is very humane, honest, compassionate, and resilient. We take care of our own neighbours.”

He added, “I am not a member of presidential cabinet, but I am a member of his party and I am a Nigerian. All we can do is to pray for him.”

Tinubu also said he does not see any problem in the feud between the legislature and the executive.

He said, “Honestly, I don’t see any problem in the crisis between the legislature and executive because we are in politics and in politics, there is an inbuilt conflict resolution mechanism.

“Crisis, argument and communication are part of politics and there is a self-corrective process.

“The National Assembly is there to voice their objective or objection. It is constitutional to take action against the opposition while the executive is to do the job of executive. They don’t have to be dog and nick to one another.
‘But for the peace, unity, prosperity, harmony and progress of the country, they have to work together; they are co-joined twins. No one can consume one another. If they play the politics well, Nigeria will be better for it.”

He also endorsed Ganduje for a second term.

Tinubu said: “It is a great honour and privilege for me to be here today. It has been very tough in the last few years. I grew up in the hands of two people, who knew me to my home. One of them is Dan Massanin Kano, who has just passed on.

“The other is a living legend, Malam Yusuf Ali. In fact, my bedroom, where I am sleeping today, he has slept there; and he has been a great guiding light for me. He lost his brother; he lost a son, not too long ago. I have not been able to come and be with him.

“It is only God who gives and he takes. We cannot change any date of calendar as written by God almighty. God will continue to be with you and console you. You will live long for us.

“And incidentally, I will repeat this when we get to the Government House. Our brother, Ganduje, Your Excellency, you are saying eight years, some people are saying 12 years; but if you put comma in any line of the constitution, that is an amendment.

“So, I endorse eight years, we are with it, and with all our body and soul. You are a great man – and you are a very very loyal man. We have been planning to come to condole with you because of Dan Masani. It is not just a Kano bereavement, but a national bereavement. We should condole with you and the people of Kano State because you are bereaved.

“One thing that we must note in His Excellency, Governor Ganduje is this – he is one of the most straightforward, dependable individuals. When you agree on something, or in the words of Donald Trump, ‘do a deal with him,’ you can go to sleep because you will be the one to break that accord, not him.

“Ganduje, I want to say thank you. You are so humble, so dependable. You are a friend that is completely flexible. You have the understanding of family and friendship.

“So, if you say eight years, yes; before you add the other four years, I say watch – that other four years, maybe as a governor, maybe as a president. So, we will wait, let’s amortise the eight years first.”

Politics / Why I Don’t Have A Bulletproof Car – Gov Obaseki by ridbay(m): 9:49am On Jul 15, 2017

The Governor of Edo, Godwin Obaseki Friday, said the reason why he is not using a bulletproof car was due to inadequate funds in the state.

According to Premium Times, he said his administration was cutting down on the cost of governance in alignment with economic realities in Nigeria.

“I am the governor of Edo State. I am entitled to a brand new bullet-proof car, but I have not bought it because we cannot afford it,” Obaseki said when the state branch of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN), visited him at the Edo State Government House, Benin City.

He added that he was avoiding ‘wasteful spending’.

He also denied that the state government owed pensioners.

Politics / Names Of 9 Rescued Chibok Girls Not On Our List – Bbog by ridbay(m): 6:58am On Jul 14, 2017

The Bring Back Our Girls group on Thursday said nine of the 82 rescued Chibok girls were not on their list, Punch reports.

A member of the #BBOG and Chairman, Chibok Community in Abuja, Hosea Tsambido, who stated this during the group’s sitout in Abuja.

He said the names of six out of the nine girls were found on the West African Examination Council results sheet, while three were missing.

He stated that the girls’ parents may have given them different names during the collation of the girls’ statistics after the abduction.

Tsambido said, “We believed that some of the rescued girls were using different names from the names they registered their WAEC with. That is why we cannot match the names of the nine rescued girls with the ones we collected after the abduction.

“Amongst the nine girls, six of the names appeared on the WAEC result list. Maybe their parents gave different names when their statistics where being taken after the abduction while the other three names are not on the WAEC or #BBOG list. So maybe the names they gave were different from the ones on the WAEC list.

Politics / On Your Marks: 2019 Is Close And Makarfi Is Already Behind Schedule by ridbay(m): 10:42am On Jul 13, 2017

There are approximately twenty months between now and the next general elections in 2019, and Ahmed Makarfi, the now authenticated PDP Chairman, is already behind schedule.

The internal problems of the party has left it without a proper structure over the past two years, causing factions and disgruntlement amongst members, some of whom have exited to join other parties. In the two years in which it has occupied the place of the opposition, PDP has not so much as imposed any value on itself, let to talk of opposing the APC. Beside lone figures like Ayodele Fayose, Nyesom Wike, and the quips from Reno Omokri and Femi Fani-Kayode, the PDP as a party has not given the APC any tough nuts to crack.

With the major issue now settled, it can be expected that they will set about restructuring the party to make it ready for the 2019 polls. The Makarfi-led executive will now have to set a plan in place to mend the party’s weaknesses and loopholes that made it a catastrophe in the 2015 elections.

Senator Makarfi finds himself in a unique situation different from the fate of previous Chairmen of the PDP; he is the first substantive Chairman of the Party as an Opposition party. There could be advantages to this as he would not be subject to the whims of a President, as was the case under former President Goodluck Jonathan who had six Chairmen in his five years from 2010 to 2015.

Makarfi, a former Governor and Senator, is easily one of the greyer hairs in the party, perhaps only a level below the Anenihs and Jerry Ganas. He would have a greater measure of control in the affairs of the Party, and if he deems it fit to propose structural reformations in the party, there will be little meaningful resistance or manipulation from higher powers.

The interests of serving Governors, Senators, and members of the House of Representatives will obviously still guide the Party as it moves forward and aims to reclaim power from the APC. The capture of Senator Ademola Adeleke from Osun State – a traditional APC hold – will have boosted the Party’s morale.

It will be left to Makarfi and his committee to position itself and the Party properly to have a structure that continues to attract people away from other Parties and join their ranks. As the Twitter user @akaebube observed, the double-swoop of getting Adeleke and beating relegation via the Supreme Court victory means the PDP could be one “good signing” away from landing the major honours in 2019.

Fashion / The Aso-ebi Syndrome In Nigeria by ridbay(m): 6:21pm On Jul 12, 2017

As one born and duly brought up in a typical Nigerian society it is a matter of fact and needless to say that this has to be one of the most peculiar nations on the face of planet earth. Also, we are a most peculiar set of people, our way of life is it political, social, and economic or whatever you might think of is one that is sure to baffle a total stranger to the country. Despite socio-political and economic issues bedeviling the country and its citizens, sociologically, an aspect of the Nigerian life that keeps beaming is its organic solidarity. In other words, the social life of Nigerians in terms of rallying for one another when it comes to occasions that bind or creates an avenue to gather, share and celebrate.

This is basically talking of the way we socialize traditionally or culturally coupled with contemporary trends it is assuming, ways of socializing and all. Using the South-West part of the country as a case study, one would evidently notice that socilization is very rife at different levels be it ceremonies like weddings, birthday parties, burials and all sorts including other social groups and organization. It is an on-going norm these days to spot individuals and groups at occasions in uniform costumes or what is popularly called in Yoruba local parlance as Aso-Ebi.

For starters, Aso-Ebi is a phrase coined from two Yoruba words. ‘Aso’ simply means cloth or garment while ‘Ebi’ means family. The term always comes to fore at the planning stage of upcoming ceremonies- burials, weddings, birthdays and all. It begins usually with the host or celebrant and sometimes the event planners deciding on a certain costume material to be worn by invited guests and other attendees on the day of a particular ceremony. After this has been chosen, invited guests are notified of availability of a chosen material for that event while those interested go ahead to purchase the given material. The guest have to part with a ‘token’ being the cost of Aso-Ebi which usually varies in quality and size.

While this seems interesting, this societal norm that has taken root among Nigerians calls for critical analysis. This is because the Nigerian society is highly stratified in nature which then goes on to have economic implications on people in relation to their level within the socio-economic strata. For a country where over sixty-percent of its population lives in poverty, according to a 2016 UN report on Human Development Index, it is important to find out intervening factors that has made this a real syndrome. A situation whereby many who find themselves in the lower rungs of the society can’t even afford a standard fee for their wards education will go to any length to be part of an ‘Aso-Ebi’ event says a lot. On the other hand, those who can easily afford them often do so as a demonstration of Organic Solidarity pointed out earlier rather than of necessity.

As Nigerians, it’s time for us to begin to get priorities right which is critical for progress and development. Individuals need to fashion out ways of curbing unnecessary excesses through several means not least the focus here which is Aso-ebi. Though an individual has the liberty to spend resources on whatsoever they wish but there has to be a point where the line is drawn between showing solidarity and going over board at every given chance.

Politics / “i Am Not Fighting Anybody” – Fashola Clears The Air On Feud With National Assem by ridbay(m): 9:27pm On Jul 11, 2017

Minister for Works, Power and Housing, Babatunde Fashola has told Nigerians not to misinterpret his recent dispute with the House of Representatives as personal .

He told newsmen in Abuja today, “let me make it very clear that many of the Senators and honourable members are my personal friends; so, you don’t fight your friends.”

Fashola made an attempt to correct journalists on the choice of words used in describing the situation. He said words like “feud” were inappropriate as they had the potential to shift attention from the real issue at hand.

The Minister who has been in discontent with the upper and lower chambers of the Senate over inclusions of new projects into his ministry’s budget clarified the nature of the “healthy” disagreement.

“Don’t forget that we are not disagreeing about who should head what. We are not disagreeing about who should take what share of the national cake. We are disagreeing about how to develop Nigeria and that for me is very healthy for our democracy.”

“I am not fighting anybody”, the Minister said.

Politics / Banana Fall On You: Will There Be Another Apc Slip? by ridbay(m): 6:29pm On Jul 10, 2017

As loud as Rauf Aregbesola wanted to be on the campaign trail for the Osun West Senatorial elections, he really should not have gone the route of personal attacks on members of the Adeleke family.

Dr Deji Adeleke, one of the younger brothers to the deceased Senator Isiaka Adeleke and father of pop star Davido, was a particular target. Aregbesola insinuated that Davido’s father could be suffering from Isiaka’s demise, leading him to be “mad”.

There was the prompt but responsible response from the Adelekes, rebuking the Governor for condescending to the level of mocking their dead as a political tool. Though not averse to airing an opinion on political figures (like he did with Dele Momodu) Davido did not use his popular platform to strike back at Ogbeni Rauf; he was probably too engrossed with the diss with Wizkid to even bother.

But ultimately, he didn’t have to: banana has fallen on Aregbesola, or the other way round. In any case, the Governor has slipped massively and it may take sometime to get the juice off under his sole
Ademola Adeleke, in his victory speech, sees his victory as a propeller “to make sure that next year we overcome and victory shall be ours. My victory is a new dawn in the history of our democracy. We want to make sure there is nothing like rigging anymore no matter how you try, we want our democracy to grow”.

Adeleke pledges to continue the legacy of his brother, but the new Senator’s successful break with the APC in Osun West could represent the reference point for a fault line in the party’s structure that can be exploited in elections elsewhere.

PDP’s leadership crisis has been well documented. Both the Makarfi and Sheriff factions are celebrating and taking credit for Adeleke’s success. For the APC, it is a signal to build proper structures to fix its own administrative problems that have not often been in the news as a full crisis but, when scrutinised, isn’t much better than the PDPs.

Successful defections of Adelekes calibre initiated the beginning of the end of PDP’s national domination. While its no secret that both parties are basically two sides of the sane coin, it will be in the APC’s interest to prove that they are not vulnerable to falling like a pack of cards.

Politics / “You Mean A Dead Isiaka Adeleke Is Actually More Popular Than Ogbeni Rauf” by ridbay(m): 12:39pm On Jul 10, 2017

THE THREAD: “YOU MEAN A DEAD ISIAKA ADELEKE IS ACTUALLY MORE POPULAR THAN OGBENI RAUF” | TOP 10 TWEETS FROM OSUN ELECTIONS

Mr Ademola Adeleke, younger brother to the late Isiaka Adeleke emerged winner of the Osun West Senatorial elections on Saturday.

Somebody say “just like that”.

According to the results below, Mr Adeleke swept the polls in all but one local government area -10 out of 11- effectively owning the people’s mandate by 97, 280 votes against his opponent’s Mudashiru Hussein 66, 115 votes.

Premium Times reports that the late Isiaka Adeleke held that particular senatorial seat until he passed in April. And his younger brother initially sought the APC ticket but was denied, so he defected to PDP and brought home the win.

As you might imagine, PDP is pretty stocked about this win.

Politics / HOW SOLDIERS, BANKERS DIVERTED MILITARY FUNDS INTO 33 BANK ACCOUNTS – MAGU by ridbay(m): 6:24am On Jul 10, 2017
Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu has narrated how two army officers allegedly colluded with two employees of the United Bank for Africa Plc to divert the sum of N339m from the account of the Military Pensions Board.

Magu in a letter to the Chief of Defence Staff, said the suspects opened 33 accounts with UBA into which the MPB’s funds were diverted.

The acting EFCC Chairman said in his letter with reference number EFCC/EC/CDS/66/16 that the total sum of N339,374,478.58 was withdrawn from the MPB account across the counter or transferred to other accounts in the bank.

The suspects are Wing Commander Ishaka Yakubu; and an Assistant Director, Computer, with the MPB, Lieutenant Commander Akinbamidele Odunsi.

Magu in the letter said “Investigation discovered that fraudulent accounts were opened by the Business Manager, Mrs Violet Ofoegbunam, and relationship manager, Mrs Kolade Aderemi Abidemi, thereby compromising the ‘Know Your Customer’ requirements with the connivance of the two military officers.

“Thirty-three accounts were identified to have fraudulently received payments to the tune of N339,374,478.58 from Military Pensions Board between April and June 2016.”

He noted that all the 33 accounts into which the money was diverted had been frozen.

He said out of the stolen N339m, the sum of N314m had been recovered and kept in the EFCC Recovery Account.

Politics / Igbos Are Only Blackmailing Nigeria To Give Them Presidency – Arewa Chieftain by ridbay(m): 2:56pm On Jul 09, 2017

A chieftain of Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Mohammed Abdulrahman, has said restructuring should be considered, as long as it doesn’t affect Nigeria’s sovereignty or unity.

He said this in an interview with Punch on Sunday, adding that, “no matter our differences, we have become united in our diversity. It is only natural for issues of disagreement to come up from time to time.”

He said those calling for Nigeria’s break up like Nnamdi Kanu, are being sponsored by “irresponsible political elite, who do not understand the realities of our times.”

“What I see that Nnamdi Kanu and his Igbo ilk are doing is to blackmail Nigeria into submitting the presidency to them. The question I will ask them is: Can you have this presidency by blackmail?” He adds.

On where the Middle Belt will go, in case Nigeria breaks up, he said, “I’ll say Jerry Gana is a bigot. He is not a nationalist. I think he’s only a stooge for some big men in Nigeria who are self-serving. Gana can’t say he’s speaking for the Middle Belt. He is on his own. For a certainty, I can tell you that the Middle Belt will stick with the North.”

Politics / Sex Scandal: Apc Youth Pledge To Support Senator Bukar Ibrahim by ridbay(m): 7:55am On Jul 09, 2017

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Youth Renaissance Group has pledged to support Senator Bukar Ibrahim (Yobe East), and resist any attempt to further intimidate him over a picture that saw him naked in a room with two girls.

This was made known by the group, in a statement signed by its leader, Collins Edwin, on Saturday, saying the alleged scandal was the handiwork of political blackmailers, Daily Post reports.

The statement reads, “Our attention has been drawn to a systematic and calculated attempt by political spin doctors and their partners in the media to tarnish and discredit the image and enviable reputation of Senator Bukar Abba Ibrahim, the Distinguished Senator representing Yobe East Senatorial District in the National Assembly.

“Since last week, we have seen how a section of the media has been trying hard to use the fabricated sex scandal story of last week to harass and extort large sums of money from the Distinguished Senator. Of great concern is the condescending of respected household names in the media industry into the blackmailing business.

“Having failed to achieve their aim, the same ‘blackmailing coalition’ have now resorted to sponsoring false news report in some print and online newspapers against the Senator, claiming that Senator Bukar Abba has gone into hiding because the Senate has barred him from entering the National Assembly Complex. This is false!

“The planted news report is totally fake because Senator Bukar Abba Ibrahim is currently on a tour; visiting the people in his Senatorial District which is what is expected of a responsible APC Senator and not those who will be in Abuja playing dirty politics of 2019.

“We are therefore warning those who have collected millions of Naira to blackmail Senator Bukar Abba Ibrahim to desist from their shambolic business ventures.

“Any attempt by group or individual to further harass, blackmail, extort, intimidate and distract Senator Bukar Abba Ibrahim from delivering democratic dividends to Nigerians and the people of Yobe East Senatorial District would be strongly resisted by members of our group.
“There are other pressing issues in the country challenging the foundation of Nigeria which a responsible media and practitioners should devote greater attention to and not on a fabricated sex scandal story between two adults.”
