TV/Movies / Old Nollywood Isn’t Going Anywhere Anytime Soon by ridbay(m): 6:20am On Jun 23, 2017

For every film producer that says Nollywood is neglecting its slapdash storylines, its complete disregard for attention to detail, and its underlying ideology that says, “if you can cut it to an hour and thirty minutes, or two hours then it must be good to go.” There’s another that says, “Bullshit! These kids don’t know what the hell they’re talking about.”

We too once had dreams of a Nollywood filled with films like Ojukokoro, and the Wedding Party, but we stumbled on IROKO TV’s new film on Youtube and then we realised that we were smoking lizard shit. The new productions you hear about are not the rule, they are the exception. With titles like Nkwechube The Meat Seller parts 1 and 2, Wife for Rent, and War for Love Parts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 old Nollywood is not going anywhere yet. In fact, it’s more visible than ever before if you know where to look. And what’s more, some of the titles on there aren’t doing badly at all.

Not Enough, a 2 hour 14-minute long saga of complete absurdity starring Alex Ekubo, has been seen 30,810 times since the 14th of July, and 87 percent of all the people that have seen it love it. In all honesty, it isn’t bad. Alex Ekubo fakes an Indian accent, and somebody gets pregnant, what more could anyone ask for?

In as much as we crave a Nollywood that churns out blockbusters that are as profitable as they are good, we cannot ignore the beginnings of the genre. Some call them mediocre, but that would be belittling them – stripping the week-long efforts of anyone with a DSLR and a dream of any value.

Without an audience, there is no great film, so as we praise the newcomers with their big budgets and their not entirely terrible PR teams, let’s hold out a candle for the old Nollywood standard. They aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Politics / Anambra Gov Election Will Not Hold If … | Nnamdi Kanu Threatens by ridbay(m): 6:09am On Jun 23, 2017

Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu has said the Anambra state governorship election scheduled for November 18 will not take place if the Federal Government fails to conduct a referendum on Biafra.

Kanu also said the group will boycott the 2019 election if the demand for Biafra is not granted, while speaking at his father’s palace in Afara Ukwu Ibeku, Umuahia, Abia state on Thursday.

“If the federal government does not agree with us on a date for referendum, there will be no elections in the southeast, we are starting with Anambra come November this year. There will be no governorship election in Anambra state,” Kanu said.

“In 2019, the whole of Biafra land will not vote for any president. There will be no senator, there will be no house of reps, there will be no house of assembly and there will be no councilor-ship elections in Biafra land if the federal government fails to call for a referendum.

“Nigerian government should build as many prisons as possible to jail all Biafrans because there is no going back and we are ready to go prisons unless the federal government gives us Biafra.

“We are not like any other people. People like us don’t come twice. That’s why I know that with the last breath in this very body that Biafra will be restored. There’s nothing anybody can do about it. Tell them that’s what I said. Nobody on this earth can stop Biafra.”

Politics / Governor Ambode Owes The People Of Otodo Gbame An Apology by ridbay(m): 5:58pm On Jun 22, 2017

The radical drive by the Lagos State Government led by Akinwunmi Ambode to rid Lagos State its slums has been declared unconstitutional by a Lagos High Court.

The Ambode led administration of Lagos State has been on a spree of evictions of residents of Otodo Gbame and waterfront communities. A January 26th judgement by Justice Surajudeen Onigbangbo had declared the Otodo Gbame evictions on short notice without the provision of alternative shelter “cruel, inhuman and degrading”. That judgement had been in response to the demolitions that took place between the 9th and 10th of November 2016, where over 30,000 residents were forced out “by arson attack and by an excavator” while residents were asleep, according to a document by the Justice & Empowerment Initiatives (JEI).

The new judgment on the 21st of June by same Justice Onigbangbo has specifically pronounced the evictions as “unconstitutional” and has ordered the State to stop any further evictions, noting that the residents could not be justly forced out of their long-term homes without any form of relocation and compensation. Justice Onigbanjo statement directed the Ambode Government to come up with a workable resettlement plan which should be agreed to by both parties and following a due process of consultations before any communities, including Otodo Gbame, Badia East, and others, could be evicted from their settlements.

The evictions carried out so far by the Government of Lagos have increased grinding hardship being experienced by the inhabitants of those communities. With an already problematic situation with other forms of Internal Displacement, the inconsiderate evictions have rendered many vulnerable children to become refugees, while families have become disconnected from their meager means of subsistence.

The decision by the Lagos State Government to proceed with further evictions against the January ruling that it was “inhuman” has been widely commented on as an expression of oppression and tyranny by the Ambode Government. With a second ruling now confirming the first, and declaring it as against the highest law of the land, there can be no further possible justification to continue. The Ambode Government would have to cease the hostility of such evictions.

In line with the ruling, Ambode’s Government would now need to respectfully engage the members of the Otodo Gbame community, coming down to their level from the comforts of Alausa. Discussions about resettlement will now have to proceed through a dialogue based on the recognition of the dignity and humanity of the Otodo Gbame people, as poor and destitute as they may be, providing them equitable and just compensation.

And given that he put out their linens in public without any regard for their dignity, it would be must required that he begins with an apology. That is the least he should do.

Politics / Diezani Bribe: Efcc To Arraign Ex-minister Akinjide by ridbay(m): 9:09am On Jun 22, 2017

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) will arraign former Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory, Jumoke Akinjide on Thursday.

Akinjide has been accused of receiving N650m from a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, during the countdown to the 2015 general election.

The money was said to be part of the $115m (N23bn as of 2015) allegedly disbursed by Diezani including to some senior officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Wilson Uwijaren, spokesman of the EFCC said Akinjide would be arraigned on 24 counts of Money Laundering before Justice Ayo Emmanuel of a Federal High Court, Ibadan.

The charge stated that Akinjide, along with the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Oyo State, Yinka Taiwo “conspire among yourselves to directly take possession of the sum of N650,000,000 which you reasonably ought to have known forms part of the proceeds of an unlawful act to wit: money laundering, and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 18 (a) of the Money laundering (Prohibition) Act 2012 as amended and punishable under Section 15 (3) of the same Act.”

Akinjide first visited the EFCC in August last year where she was made to refund about N10m.

She was later allowed to travel out of the country for medical attention.

A member of the House of Representatives, Aliyu Pategi, stood surety for her but was arrested when Akinjide refused to make herself available as promised.

Politics / No Referendum, No 2019 Election – Nnamdi Kanu Warns by ridbay(m): 4:34pm On Jun 21, 2017

The Leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, has warned on Wednesday that his members and other eligible voters in Anambra State would boycott thev 2019 general elections if a referendum is not held.

The IPOB leader said, “Nigerian government should build as many prisons as possible to jail all Biafrans because there is no going back and we are ready to go there (prisons) unless the federal government gives us Biafra.

Politics / 10 Things Aso Rock Wants You To Know About The 2017 Budget by ridbay(m): 12:00pm On Jun 19, 2017
When the Federal Government started to take this digital communications business very seriously, we did not take them too seriously. We were plagued by the peculiar Nigerianess that takes one to new heights of cynicism.

For that, we apologise. Like who knew the day would come for us to have access to several Medium accounts run by Aso Rock, the Acting president and several ministries in addition to a periodic Villa Newsletter and Go-know-how-many Twitter accounts.

And they are all functional too. For example, after the budget signing and before the back and forth between Presidency and the House of Representatives over who can add what to the budget, Aso Rock had quickly shared these 10 things you should know about the 2017 budget:

1. The 2017 Budget Preparation process was a much more efficient process than the 2016 process. There was also less acrimony regarding it, between the Executive and Legislature.

2. The 2017 Budget was collated using — for the first time ever — a web-based application developed by the Budget Office of the Federation (BOF). Instead of the traditional method of hard copy submissions of budget proposals, Ministries, Departments and Agencies were asked to upload their proposals to the new budget preparation portal, resulting in a more efficient and transparent preparation process.

3. More than 4,000 staff of the MDAs were specially trained to use the new application, across multiple locations nationwide. To support the deployment of the budget portal, the Budget Office set up a Helpdesk, accessible by telephone and email, for authorised users.

4. President Buhari presented the 2017 Budget Speech to a Joint Session of the National Assembly on December 14, 2016.

5. The National Assembly passed the Budget on May 11, 2017, five months after it was submitted by President Buhari.

6. The next step, which should have been the signing of the Budget by the Executive, was delayed because of disagreements regarding some alterations the National Assembly made to the submitted document — for example the National Assembly reduced proposed budgets for a number of critical infrastructure projects (the standard gauge railway projects, the Mambilla Power Project, the Second Niger Bridge, the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway etc), and applied the difference to fund some new projects introduced by the legislators.

7. What followed were four weeks of painstaking engagement between Executive and Legislature, to resolve the differences.

8. The conclusion of the engagement/negotiations is that all the funds removed by the National Assembly from those critical infrastructure projects will be restored during the course of the budget year. The leadership of the National Assembly has assured the Executive that this will be done, through a process known as ‘Virement.’

9. The Executive and the National Assembly have reached an agreement to return the Federal Government to a January–December budget calendar, starting from the 2018 budget. To ensure this happens the Executive has committed to submitting the 2018 budget to the National Assembly by October 2017, and on its part the Assembly has committed to passing the budget into law before the end of 2017.

10. Budget Highlights:

Oil price: $44.5 per barrel

Daily Production: 2.2m barrels per day

Exchange Rate: US$1 = N305

a. Total expenditure of N7.441 trillion, comprising N5.08 trillion in revenues and a projected deficit of N2.36 trillion which will largely be financed by borrowing. (The 7.441 trillion is 143 billion Naira more than the original amount proposed by the Executive when President Buhari submitted the Budget in December 2016)

b. N2.18 trillion for capital expenditure (principally infrastructure).

c. More than N700 billion for investments in roads, rail, ports, power and housing projects

d. N46 billion for Special Economic Zone Projects to be set up in each geopolitical zone

Music/Radio / Song Of The Summer: African Bad Gyal (featuring Chris Brown) By Wizkid by ridbay(m): 10:29am On Jun 19, 2017

Nearly two years after Wizkid made an unusual radio hit off a sparse production and convoluted themes with “In My Bed”, “African Bad Gyal” comes bearing mark of the same Wizkid. Despite Chris Brown’s presence on the single, “African Bad Gyal” presents a less layered Wizkid with all the bearings of pop but without all of the quasi-Carribean tints that fails to indemnify Wiz increasing out-of-touch Afropop delivery.

Thankfully, “African Bad Gyal”, prepared by Sarz, the same producer that helped Wizkid build a chunk of his portfolio of hits.“African Bad Gyal” is a tad faster than much of whatever Afropop has become thanks to Tekno and Mr Eazi, but the blaring sirens and four-on-the-floor drums litter the baseline, indicating the inherently noisy instrumentation had a greater purpose. True to the tempo, Wiz belts in with a confident hello of some sort, yelling, “dem no born me yesterday”: an iteration that was intended as a witty African quip but sounded like an attestation of Wizkid’s new wave king status.

Even when it comes together, the point of “African Bad Gyal” is not quite clear. But we have gotten used to this kind of Afropop from Wizkid; where the message is in the rhythm and everything else slathered in between exists only to gel that into a full song. There is a unifying element from both Chris Brown and Wizkid, as both artists clearly state their appreciation of women from all over the world, and that’s just about enough to remind us Wizkid has been giving Africa good vibes for years, and now he’s boldly shipping it to the rest of the world.

Politics / Re: Budget Padding: ‘reps Give Condition For Acceptance Of EFCC Invitations’ by ridbay(m): 10:02am On Jun 19, 2017
SOURCE OF THE NEWS

ynaijaNews:
The House Representatives has said its members will appear before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged budget padding, if some conditions are met, The Nation reports.

According to the newspaper, the lower chamber has asked the agency to send the invitation of its members over the alleged N284 billion budget padding through Speaker Yakubu Dogara.

It said its Minority Leader, Leo Ogor, would not appear before EFCC if that condition is not met.

In a letter through its clerk, the lower chamber reportedly the agency has to request for the release of Leo Ogor or any other member through the Speaker.

About 13 members, including four principal officers, are in the first batch of those already slated for questioning

A source in the EFCC said: “We have received a letter from the Clerk to the House claiming that he was directed by the Speaker to tell the EFCC that Ogor or any Representative be invited through the Speaker.

“We don’t know what informed such a notice but the Clerk was saying it is the norm. We are weighing options including exhausting all hurdles laid by the House.

“We may write the House but at the end if Ogor and other lawmakers refuse to honour our invitation, we will effect their arrest.

“No member of the House has constitutional immunity from investigation and prosecution.”

Rep. Abdulmumin Jibrin who was suspended for the allegations had appeared last week for a five-hour grilling on the allegations.
Politics / Northern Youth Were Paid By Some Elites To Issue Igbo Quit Notice – Presidential by ridbay(m): 9:43am On Jun 19, 2017

Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Babafemi Ojudu said the northern youths, who gave the October 1 quit notice to Igbo resident in the region were paid.

Ojudu said this in Abuja at the weekend at a meeting with regional youth leaders, organised by the Office of the Special Assistant to the President on Youth and Student Affairs.

He said, “Only God knows how much some elites, who hid behind the curtains, paid those who made that declaration in Kaduna.

“It will be worst for us if we allow some selfish people to push us to unnecessary war. Nigeria holds a lot of promises for all of us. I know and we all know that a lot of you have been excluded from the good things of this country and of course we can trace that to poor and bad governance over the years.

“But again, what we should be clamouring for is good governance, not separatism, not secession. This is all about elite competition. The youth are only being used as tools to promote socio-political disorder.

“Okay, if I don’t want to be importing things from Singapore, I can use this idea of Biafra to make money and some people are making huge money from it. Those, who were agitating and calling for Biafra before, are now singing another tune after building their palaces,’’ he said.

Senate Leader Ahmad Lawan said the current situation where youths from different parts of Nigeria were making hate speeches was unhelpful to the nation.

“You need to come together and you will find us as good, useful partners. I want to promise that we will not be found wanting in the discharge of our responsibilities. Once your requests are brought to us for legislation we will not hesitate to support them so as to make you better citizens,’’ Lawan said.

Politics / Femi Fani-kayode: My Response To The Strange Word From Pastor Moshood Ifayemiwo by ridbay(m): 7:36am On Jun 19, 2017

“I have never met Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode in my life, but have read some of his write-up in the papers.

There are some of his views I do not share, but at times reason with some of his cogitation.

I saw his immediate political future recently, but I am sad to report that his star may dim so soon, if he doesn’t pray and change course.

Here is what the Holy Spirit is telling us to tell Mr. Fani-Kayode:

“After the death of Saul, David returned from striking down the Amalekites and stayed in Ziklag two days.

On the third day, a man arrived from Saul’s camp with his clothes torn and dust on his head. When he came to David, he fell to the ground to pay him honor. “Where have you come from?”

David asked him. He answered, “I have escaped from the Israelite camp.” “What happened?” David asked. “Tell me.” “The men fled from the battle,” he replied. “Many of them fell and died. And Saul and his son Jonathan are dead.”

Then David said to the young man who brought him the report, “How do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?” “I happened to be on Mount Gilboa,” the young man said, “and there was Saul, leaning on his spear, with the chariots and their drivers in hot pursuit.

When he turned around and saw me, he called out to me, and I said, ‘What can I do?’ “He asked me, ‘Who are you?’

“‘An Amalekite,’ I answered. “Then he said to me, ‘Stand here by me and kill me! I’m in the throes of death, but I’m still alive.’ “So, I stood beside him and killed him, because I knew that after he had fallen he could not survive.

And I took the crown that was on his head and the band on his arm and have brought them here to my lord.” Then David and all the men with him took hold of their clothes and tore them.

They mourned and wept and fasted till evening for Saul and his son Jonathan, and for the army of the LORD and for the nation of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.

David said to the young man who brought him the report, “Where are you from?” “I am the son of a foreigner, an Amalekite,” he answered. David asked him, “Why weren’t you afraid to lift your hand to destroy the LORD’s anointed?”

Then David called one of his men and said, “Go, strike him down!” So, he struck him down, and he died. For David had said to him, “Your blood be on your own head. Your own mouth testified against you when you said, ‘I killed the LORD’s anointed.'” (II Samuel 1:1-15).

This demands for wisdom and spiritual understanding”.

(From Pastor Moshood Ifayemiwo, Maryland, U.S.A, June 2017)

******************************************

MY RESPONSE TO PASTOR MOSHOOD IFAYEMIWO

I saw the counsel that I was offered in this piece. I thank him for his concern for me and his prayers.

I do however urge him to dig deeper.

I know the author and I respect him immensely.

He made great sacrifices during the June 12th struggle and he suffered torture and incarceration for two or three years. I commend him for his courage at that difficult time in our history.

He can, however, be rest assured that I am not an Amalekite. I am David. He can also be rest assured that Buhari is not a Saul that was anointed by God but rather a Pharaoh and a Herod all rolled into one that was anointed by the devil.

No-one will chop my head off or kill me before my time and neither am I a messenger. I am David.

I am a King and I will chop off the heads of the Amalekites and ALL my enemies at the soonest.

One by one they will fall until the spiritual circle is complete and the way is clear.

I do not fight my battles: God fights them for me. I am David.

Behold they fall one by one already. Slowly but surely.

Consider the following:

The 6 Senators that bitterly opposed my Ministerial nomination on the Senate floor, that said I would be a Minister only over their dead bodies and that got up and insulted me during my Senate Ministerial clearance hearing in 2006 all died of strange diseases within a few years.

Meanwhile, ALL the Senators that got up, spoke for me and supported me that day are all alive and well till today. Two of them went on to be made Ministers a few years later and two of them were elected governor.

Again the northern traditional ruler that wrote OBJ and said that I should be removed as a Minister in 2006 for being anti-Islam and anti-north was killed, together with his Senator son and his grandson, in a horrific plane crash a few weeks after writing his letter.

Again all of the Senators that sat on the Senate Committee on Aviation that probed me in 2008 (led by Senator Anyim Ude) all paid a terrible price and none of them came back to the Senate at the next election except for one.

And the one that came back was the only one on the Committee that showed me kindness and that was fair to me during the proceedings. Not only did he come back to the Senate but he was also later made a Minister.

Again the President that told EFCC to maliciously charge me to court in 2008 for doing no wrong dropped dead in 2010.

Again the Head of the EFCC that executed the plan for him was removed from her job unceremoniously, lost her 35-year-old child and lost her husband a few years later.

Worst still, the officer that was sent to lead the team that arrested me in the Nigerian Senate was murdered three years later by men of the underworld.

I was prosecuted for 7 years and on July 1st, 2015, 7 years to the day when the whole ordeal started, I was discharged and acquitted of all charges by the courts.

One year later, they came after me again on the orders of the new government and once again history repeated itself.

Just like before, the President that ordered that the EFCC should maliciously charge me to court in 2016 for doing no wrong is bed-ridden and brain dead in a foreign land today and will leave this world very soon if he has not done so already.

Again the Head of the EFCC who executed the plan for him has been rejected by the Senate twice and has not been cleared or confirmed.

Much will still happen. Wait and see. It is just a matter of time.

These things do not happen by my power but by the power of God.

Anyone that seeks to destroy me, that seeks my hurt, that seeks to abort God’s plan for my life or that wishes me ill always has a terrible end or is stalked by misfortune and tragedy.

I am David. I cannot be cut short and I cannot die before my time.

I will carry out my assignment in this nation and on this planet successfully before I am called home whether my detractors like it or not.

The Bible says “touch not my anointed and do my prophets no harm”.

Many in our nation still have much to learn from that. They would do well to learn it fast.

Meanwhile, I shall live long and prosper because the Lord is with me.

And like David at Ziklag, I shall pursue, overtake and recover all that my enemies have taken from me. The Lord is faithful to His own. Shalom

– FFK, Abuja, Nigeria. 17th June 2017.

Crime / Did Davido’s Music Lead To The Arrest Of Billionaire Kidnapper, Evans? by ridbay(m): 9:12pm On Jun 17, 2017

We are not sure, but Evans the notorious billionaire kidnapper may have been found because of Davido’s hit single, If.

The song has been rocking the airwaves for months now and can be heard on the lips of very many young persons, from adults even (maybe unfortunately) school children. A conspicuous line in the chorus “30 Billion for the account” (pronounced ‘akant’) is arguably the most sung verse in the song. Not everyone has taken to the boast about such obviously outrageous amount of money in music to demonstrate success, as Nollywood veteran, Patrick Doyle, recently voiced his opinion.

But did it inspire the Nigerian Police to place a N30m bounty on Evans the kidnapper?

It would be recalled that on May 16, the Nigeria Police had made the offer to any person who would come forward with information on the dreaded kidnapper. This followed the whistle-blowing wave that had been introduced by the Federal Government in encouraging citizens towards being engaged in the anti-corruption fight. A sprinkle of reports has been made so far to the anti-corruption body, notably the NIA’s stash at the Ikoyi residence.

Evans was nabbed on June 10, 2017, in his bedroom in the Magodo area of Lagos. The arrest came after many of his accomplices had been rounded up from different locations about two weeks before. According to accounts that were familiar with the process, the arrest of Evans’ gang members had come after the miraculous escape of a wealthy owner of a pharmaceutical company in the Ilupeju area of Lagos, named as Donatus Dunu who had been abducted on February 14, 2017.

Donatus would later proceed, after his escape, to security agents who moved to uncover the various ports and docks of the multi-level supply chain of Evans kidnapping enterprise that eventually led to his bedroom.

Following the account above, it is not a case of a tip-off from a particular observing citizen, who was motivated to get the N30 million in the account. So, maybe Davido’s song did not play a role after all. Would have been nice if it did.

Politics / Opinion: Too Late To Save Divided, Separate, Hostile And Unequal Nigeria by ridbay(m): 6:44pm On Jun 17, 2017

We have witnessed the independence of Slovenia from the former Yugoslavia, the collapse of the Soviet Union, the division of the former Czechoslovakia, and the separation of both Eritrea from Ethiopia and South Sudan from Sudan.

Numerous of successful secessions have allowed people greater freedom and self-determination: Greek independence from the Ottoman Empire, the Hungarian split with the Soviet Union in 1989, Singapore’s secession from Malaysia in 1965, Ireland’s independence from the UK, and countless others.

Nigeria’s impotence as ungovernable, divided, separate, hostile, and unequal nation is apparent for all to see. Nigeria, as we know it, is dead! The country is irrevocably broken along ethnic, linguistic, geographical, religious, and cultural lines. The sooner the Nigerian people accept this, the sooner the break-up and the sooner we can move on.

From time to time, the break-up of Nigeria becomes inevitable to many of us who believe that “In the course of human events, it is necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them.” We’re in one of those periods now, and while the reasons are unique, the historical moment is not new. In 1953, the northerners considered secession from the Nigerian colony that would soon be an independent nation.

The words of our founding fathers that Nigeria is not one country remain prophetically instructive.

Listen to them:

“Nigeria is not a nation. It is mere geographical expression. There are no ‘Nigerians’ in the same sense as there are ‘English,’ ‘Welsh,’ or ‘French.’ The word ‘Nigerian’ is merely a distinctive appellation to distinguish those who live within the boundaries of Nigeria and those who do not,” Chief Obafemi Awolowo said in 1947.

“Since 1914 the British government has been trying to make Nigeria into one country,” Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa said, “but the Nigerian people themselves are historically different in their backgrounds, in their religious beliefs and customs, and do not show themselves any signs of willingness to unite… Nigerian unity is only a British invention.”

Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe argued in 1964 that “It is better for us and many admirers abroad that we [Nigeria] should disintegrate in peace and not in pieces. Should the politicians fail to heed this warning, then I will venture the prediction that the experience of the Democratic Republic of the Congo will be child’s play if ever it comes to our turn to play such a tragic role.”

The recent proclamation of northern youths and the ultimatum given to Igbo people to vacate the north within three months shed much needed light on why Nigeria is not, and will never be, one united nation. There is no mystery as to how we got to this point. There is also no mystery as to who to blame. There is no need for conspiracy theories. The polarization of public life exacerbated by government corruption and incompetence has become so tense it led to widespread civil disorder, culminating in chaos and crises.

Nigeria is fast approaching a complete collapse. For long, many of us have raised alarm that our government and the way the system is being run are not working, and cannot guarantee delivery of basic essential services. The ominous declaration of the northern youths has left Nigerians in fear of what tomorrow may bring. While all this plays out, Nigerians watch in horror and amazement from the sidelines and wonder when the inevitable will occur.

Inequality between the looting ruling class and the poor has become increasingly intolerable. The native tyrants in the National Assembly, better still, National Asylum, are in stupor of random pleasures and whims, feasting on plenty of food and sex, and reveling in the non-judgment that democracy is civil religion. From all indications, our democracy is in retreat, close to being destroyed by vast corruption, ineptitude, incompetence, and fraud.

Those in Abuja couldn’t care less about our people. They couldn’t care less that for 58 years we couldn’t get along. They couldn’t care less that Nigeria is as good as dead. Nigerians are angry – Igbos, Hausas, and Yorubas. They are all angry for being sick and poor and tired of being cannon fodders. They are tired of being jobless and hopeless. Brother is turning against brother. Killing of families and children are the norm rather than the exception. Nigerians are nickel-and-dimed to death in their everyday life. Workers, if paid at all, are paid peonage wages. The nation’s peonage wage is at subsistence level. This is simply incompatible with self-determination.

With subsistence living, Nigerians are constrained into a desperate state. Their horizon is limited to the present day, to getting enough of what they need to make it to the next. The minimum wage in Nigeria is N18,000 per month. This is criminally below the poverty line. That’s a scrambling, anxious existence, narrowly bounded. It’s impossible to decently feed, clothe, and shelter yourself on a wage like that, much less a family, much less have money to see the doctor, or pay for your kids college, or participate in any of those good things of life. Down to the peon level, the pursuit of happiness sounds like a bad joke.

The critical mass of our people is kept in peonage. All its vitality spent in the trenches of day-to-day survival with scant or no opportunity to develop the full range of its faculties. That’s why I’m miffed by the numbed-out, dumbed-down, make belief Nigerians who still believe that Nigeria could be saved from falling apart. This is deceptive and uncharitable given our past political history and the present political realities of our nation. Those who see future or unity in one Nigeria are deluded, ignorant, unrealistic. They don’t know what’s real, what’s possible, and can’t differentiate fact from fiction.

How can the proponents of one Nigeria explain the humiliation and insult heaped on Vice President Osinbajo when the Chief Thief Abba Kyari referred to him as “Coordinator of National Affairs” instead of Vice President? The freest and fairest presidential election in our history was won by MKO Abiola. The election was annulled by a northerner. He was robbed of the presidency and he was killed. If Osinbajo and Abiola were Hausas, nothing of such would have happened to them. Examples of such second class treatment abound. We need not bury our heads in the sand like the proverbial ostrich as if all is well with a troubled and traumatized nation suffering from history of division and disunity.

Nigeria is a country divided against itself and cannot stand. Nigeria is virtually bankrupt. The clamor for separation is the manifestation of a nation grounded as it were, without hope of moving forward after 58 years. I believe it’s too late to save Nigeria from disintegration.

Our union for the past 58 years has produced no peace, no progress, and no prosperity for the poor majority. The only beneficiaries and the loudest advocates of one Nigeria are those profiteers from the miseries of the pulverized poor – the ruling class.

Religion / “the Hallelujah Challenge Will Change Nothing In Nigeria” - Joy Isi Bewaji by ridbay(m): 4:16pm On Jun 17, 2017

Psalmist and gospel music minister Nathaniel Bassey began a thing he dubbed the Hallelujah Challenge on Instagram this month. ‘

Basically, believers gather on Insta Live to worship God in song and pray. The time is midnight and the date is every day throughout the month of June.

It is the first of its kind and it has been a rousing success, judging by the skyrocketing numbers every night and the marvellous testimonies.

Media entrpreneur Joy Isi Bewaji is a skeptic. What’s the point of the Hallelujah Challenge if it does not solve any of Nigeria’s problems, she asks in these series of rants posted on Facebook.

These are the 7 things we learned:

#Rant881

1 Nigeria is fertile ground for religion

#HallelujahChallenge will succeed bigly in Nigeria. That’s a given. Not a miracle.

Religion is the bedrock of our confidences and convictions.

Reinhard Bonnke succeeded in the 90s with his exaggerated revivals in Nigeria.

Adeboye succeeds every first Friday of the month, leaving travelers along Ibadan-expressway pulling out their hair (the irony of that situation: a god worshiping mission that makes people swear and curse in god’s name for hours of traffic they have to suffer just so a few can practice a religion).

Christ Embassy succeeded on Television. No ministry is yet to beat the hours dedicated to Oyakhilome’s theatrics.

Religion succeeds in Nigeria.

If I start a church today, it will succeed. Calling or no calling.

Because we are not people given to anything apart from an obsession with things we cannot see or have any control over, whilst all that we see rot away and are destroyed by our innate corruption.

2. The Hallelujah Challenge will change nothing in Nigeria

This cute online revival will change nothing; even if we gather half the numbers in Nigeria to spread their faith on third mainland bridge and cry out to God (apart from that good feeling that plasters your heart after belting out and sweating on a few hallelujah songs).

This is the era of knowledge. We are not Israelites under Moses. Salvation has come. Jesus has come and died. What else do you want?

3. We need a mental revolution

We have had too many spiritual revolutions. What we need is a mental one.

You cannot pray Nigeria to greatness. It is impossible for God to move in a country where we allow our police to discard rape cases with the wave of a hand, and our politicians rob us blindly. It is not up to God to save the rot in our educational institutions or fix the drainage on our roads. It’s up to us. And we can’t do any of that on our knees. We get shit done in 2017 by cerebral drudgery.

Religion is like soda. It’s Coca-cola. That drink isn’t going to save anything. It’s feel-good… and like Coke, we are addicted to this feel good process. Every Sunday we go to church to get our feel-good tablet. Then we have to come out of that fix after a few hours and face the issues that have been haunting us for decades, still unsolved. Still in need of a different approach.

Religion makes us vulnerable, self-centred and clearly delusional. It attacks our rational and coherent capacity.

4. Revivals are Nigeria’s biggest achievement

Things are moving well in your life and a miracle occurred in your life and you finally got an answer to something that had been bugging you in your life because you prayed. But your prayer doesn’t have the depth or promise to change the problem called Nigeria. Your little success is beautiful. But what does it matter when every part of the country you call home is a wreck.

If you have beautiful lips but your body is ravaged by cancer, what then does it count for – those beautiful lips?

#HallelujahChallenge will succeed bigly. That’s a given. Not a miracle.

Why then are y’all so surprised that you can gather 50,000 people online? Revivals are our biggest achievements. The most educated will bow to a man of God who couldn’t pass his WASSCE exams. It is why we are what we are.

Stop being so shocked that people want to serve God. It is what we do. It is the only thing we do well. When we are done, we go back home and justify a paedophile, or delay the transaction of a debt, or bear false witness. Or choose any of the 100,000 ways to live sinfully. Then the process continues the next Sunday. Like a dark cycle, like playing russian roulette, until your own dark faith and spinelessness kill you.

5. We need a different challenge

God, however, wants you to get your knees up and go challenge your Local government for a start. He wants you to write a petition and follow through in regard to Queens’ College. Or choose any 100,000 ways to fix your country.

Try #ScienceChallenge, a hashtag that hopes to promote facts through experiment and observation, and see how far that will go. It definitely will not get 50,000 people questioning why we, a people of over 170million, cannot produce our own malaria drugs.

Do you know if they close the borders of Nigeria we will all die? Over 90% of our daily needs are imported. Even toothpick.

But prayer is the key. Smh.

Rant 883

6. Religion is Nigeria’s greatest obstacle to growth

Is Nigeria’s spirituality productive? Don’t share personal stories. Even heathens and infidels have glorious personal victories.

The question is: has spirituality affected Nigeria as a country in politics, education, economy, vision, leadership? Is it taking us closer to first world realities… or is it just helping you as an individual sell more garri in your shop?

Nigeria’s spirituality isn’t interested in ensuring better healthcare, for instance… it only wants to heal a child of pneumonia miraculously, which it hasn’t even yet succeeded in doing.

There’s no holistic mission for religion in Nigeria. You want to drive a fine car through bad roads and call it a blessing. Build a Lekki house right in the middle of a street with bad drainage and call it a blessing.

These personal victorious are cringe-worthy, pedestrian and ridiculous.

[News flash]: “It’s not prayers we need. It is common sense” | 7 things we learned from Joy Isi Bewaji’s fresh outburst”

7. Nigerian Christians need to grow up

You are not developing your minds. That is why we have to break this down to tiny bits of information so you can burp on it like a child still being fed cereals.

When will your spirituality and church-going and hallelujah-shouting graduate to tough meat and sound knowledge?

We don’t need spirituality to succeed or develop or curb our excesses as a failed country.

Religion/spirituality, as a matter of fact, is our biggest obstacle to growth.

We still believe God will do som’tin… and your faith will heal the land… and your prayers will touch the hearts of our leaders so they can stop looting.

Lol! Shoot me!

Deal with the loot in your respective religious centres first. Then deal with your own duplicity. That should keep you preoccupied for the next decade.

You don’t need God’s permission or even His blessing to build a first world county. Our minds can do so much. And HE gave us that mind. We are blessed already.

I don’t do my children’s homework. I stopped since grade 3. I provide. Children, go and read and pass. You don’t need me.

I know when I need to come in. You can’t be children forever. Kill your cockroaches with your own broom, make your sandwich by yourself, sweep your room, wash your toilet, throw your clothes in the washing machine, change the bedsheet, negotiate with the shoemaker by yourself.

Don’t call me.

When are you going to grow up?

That’s parenting. And if God is your father, why do you expect His parenting to be different from ours?

Politics / 3 Ways The Presidency Can Manage Buhari’s Absence by ridbay(m): 6:10pm On Jun 16, 2017

The term “manage” here is not used here to mean take advantage, as it has been alleged by some Aso Rock insiders.

What can those around the President do right in the present situation to help Nigerians better appreciate their refusal to divulge much on the health status of the President?

1. Divulge some

Pretty simple. Everyone knows personal health records are private and cannot be extracted without consent. What can they do? Personal assistants and advisers are paid from the public purse to proffer timely and nationally relevant counsel to elected leaders. It is understandable that their loyalty should lie with the man who appoints them but those who ultimately pay their bills should not be treated as though they do not matter. On the note of providing counsel, what harm would it do if the aides ask the President for permission to provide some information about what it is that has kept him away.

Upon his return from London last March, he, Buhari, did say that he had never been so hit by illness. Can we just have an idea so we know what we are dealing with? Bones? Muscles? Organs?

2. Stop being evasive

It does not do much good, in the current state of things, to deflect issues from what the people are asking about. Answer the questions as forthrightly as possible, without appearing to dismiss them as inconsequential.

3. The truth will set us all free

Not just on the state of the health of the President now, but on all other National matters. The Minister of Information and Culture, especially, should be wary of going on live TV to brazenly misinform Nigerians. If he and other members of the Executive really want to be heard and given the benefit of doubt when they make comments about the President, they should tell the truth in all other matters, at least to buy some goodwill.

The whole truth. Nothing less will suffice.

Politics / APC Expels Abdulmumin Jibrin Over Anti-party Activities by ridbay(m): 6:17pm On Jun 15, 2017

The All Progressives Congress (APC) of Bebeji local government chapter of Kano state has expelled Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin over alleged anti-party activities.

Chairman of the party, Sani Kanti Garka while addressing a press conference on Thursday said Jibrin created divisions in the party.

Garka said, “Kofa was accused of creating divisions in the party at local government, forming a parallel APC leadership in Bebeji and 14 wards, sabotaging Ganduje-led government and disloyalty to APC national leadership by sabotaging Buhari-led administration.”

He added that the lawmaker was unable to defend himself before a 5-man committee.

“The 5-man committee led by Alhaji Musa Namadi has contacted the expelled lawmaker twice on the 11th and 13th of June to hear his own version but he failed to defend himself. He listened to the committee on the 11th June but refused to listen to it on the 13th.

“As a result of that the committee therefore filed its reports and submitted same to the party on the 15th June, 2017 for further actions. After it has gone through the report, the party was left with no option than to expel Kofa because it will not condone such attitude from any of its members. All party members must abide by its rules and regulations at all levels,” he said.

Jibrin was suspended from the House of Representatives for one legislative year over his budget padding allegations.

Politics / “there Are Only Two Major Tribes In Nigeria: The Elites And The Masses” –sanusi by ridbay(m): 9:42am On Jun 15, 2017

The Emir of Kano, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, has on Wednesday condemned groups that have resorted to ‘hate speech’ along ethnic lines.

In a series of posts on Instagram, Sanusi said that due to regional separation, we still speak in the language of 1953.

The Emir, condemning ethnicity/tribalism, said we need to stop thinking along ethnic lines and embrace the creation called Nigeria.

He starts by saying that he is “Fulani. My grandfather was an Emir also fulani my uncle and guardian was also the immediate late Emir of Kano Alhaji Ado Bayero and therefore I represent all that has been talked about this afternoon.

He said the language of the generation older than him was to use regions to refer to themselves, but that he is a Nigerian.

“My grandfather was a Northerner, I am a Nigerian, he wrote.

“The problem with this country is that in 2009, we speak in the language of 1953. Sir Olaniwun can be forgiven for the way he spoke, but I cannot forgive people of my generation speaking in that language.

“Let us go into this issue because there are so many myths that are being bandied around. Before colonialism, there was nothing like Northern Nigeria, Before the Sokoto Jihad, there was nothing like the Sokoto caliphate.

“The man from Kano regard himself as bakane. The man from Zaria was bazazzage. The man from Katsina was bakatsine. The kingdoms were at war with each other. They were Hausas, they were Muslims, they were killing each other.

“The Yoruba were Ijebu, Owo, Ijesha, Akoko, Egba. When did they become one? When did the North become one? You have the Sokoto Caliphate that brought every person from Adamawa to Sokoto and said it is one kingdom. They now said it was a Muslim North.

“The Colonialists came, put that together and said it is now called the Northern Nigeria. Do you know what happened? Our grandfathers were able to transform to being Northerners. We have not been able to transform to being Nigerians. The fault is ours.

“Tell me, how many governors has South West produced after Awolowo that are role models of leadership? How many governors has the East produced like Nnamdi Azikiwe that can be role models of leadership? How Many governors in the Niger Delta are role models of leadership? Tell me.

“There is no evidence statistically that any part of this country has produced good leaders.

“You talk about Babangida and the problems of our economy. Who were the people in charge of the economy during Babangida era? Olu Falae, Kalu Idika Kalu.”

He stated that it is hypocritical to talk about ethnicity only when it pleases us.

He said, “we talk ethnicity when it pleases us. It is hypocrisy. You said elections were rigged in 1959, Obasanjo and Maurice Iwu rigged election in 2007.

“Was it a Southern thing? It was not. The problem is: everywhere in this country, there is one Hausa, Ibo, Yoruba and Itshekiri man whose concern is how to get his hands on the pile and how much he can steal.

“Whether it is in the military or in the civilian government, they sit down, they eat together. In fact, the constitution says there must be a minister from every state.

“So, anybody that is still preaching that the problem of Nigeria is Yoruba or Hausa or Fulani, he does not love Nigeria.

“The problem with Nigeria is that a group of people from each and every ethnic tribe is very selfish. The poverty that is found in Maiduguri is even worse than any poverty that you find in any part of the South.”

Politics / I Didn’t Bribe Judge With N750,000, I Assisted Him – San by ridbay(m): 4:05pm On Jun 14, 2017

Joseph Nwobike, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria on Wednesday said he gave Justice Mohammed Yinusa of the Federal High Court N750,000 to assist him in settling his mother’s medical bills but not as a bribe.

Nwobike said this before an Ikeja High Court while testifying in a corruption trial by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The EFCC had filed an 11-count against Nwobike for allegedly offering gratification to public officials.

According to the EFCC, Nwobike offered bribe to some judges of the Federal High Court and National Industrial Court.

Led by his counsel, Olawale Akoni (SAN), Nwobike denied the allegation.

“I am a SAN, who was sworn in 2010 for the 2009 set; since I was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1992, I have been in uninterrupted legal practice in Lagos and all over the country.

“My primary duty as a legal practitioner is to respect the court in conduct either in physical appearances or my processes before the court.

“Since I was called to the Nigerian Bar, I have never been a respondent to any form of complaint or been a party to any disciplinary proceeding before anybody constituted for that purpose,” he told the court.

Nwobike added, “I recollect that I did a few cases against the EFCC.

“On a particular day, I came back from court and received a phone call from a fellow who described himself an official of the EFCC.

“He introduced himself as Mr Zakari and I recollected that in the past, I had cross-examined him in a case involving my client and the EFCC.

“He (Zakari) said I should come to his office to clarify an issue. I went to the EFCC thinking that the issue has to do with my client and the EFCC.

“Thirty minutes after I arrived at the EFCC office and met him, he showed me a document which I found out was a UBA statement of account of Nwobike and Co.

“He showed me an entry where there was a transfer of the sum of N750,000 from the account of Joseph Nwobike and Co. to the bank account of Justice Mohammed Yinusa.

“Zakari requested that I put in writing the reasons for that transfer.

“In my statement, I said I knew Justice Yinusa for quite a long time back when he was a counsel at the Federal Ministry of Justice and we became friends as lawyers.

“On one occasion, I saw him by chance and he told me that his mother was ill and was undergoing dialysis and he feared that she will die soon and N250,000 was spent daily on her treatment,” he said.

“I pitied him not as a judge but because he had been my friend for over 19 years. I told him that I had no money on me but I will send money when I had some money.

“He gave me his account details and we parted.

“When I had some money, in my own signature, I transferred N750,000 only for that purpose.

“I saw him again by chance and he told me that his mother was getting better but I later found out that she died because she could not continue with the dialysis.”

Justice Raliatu Adebiyi adjourned the case until July 3 for continuation of trial.

Education / Take Ownership Of LAUTECH From Oyo, Osun | Protesting Students Urge FG by ridbay(m): 10:44am On Jun 09, 2017
Students of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso have demanded the transfer of ownership of the school from the Osun and Oyo state governments to the Federal Government.

The students said this on Thursday when they stormed the National Assembly to protest the closure of their school for over 10 months.

They urged the lawmakers to intervene in the disagreement between the members of staff and the Osun and Oyo governments.

In their petition, the students said both states now have their own institutions and have abandoned LAUTECH.
“It is pertinent, we also bring to your notice sir, that Osun State had a separate state university, just as Oyo State recently inaugurated hers, leaving LAUTECH in a dilemma,” they stated.

Leader of House, Femi Gbajabiamila received the students on behalf of the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara.

According to his media aide, the lawmaker promised that a solution to the problem will be found.

He however explained that it might not be exactly possible for the Federal Government to take over the school without passing through some rigorous process.

Politics / EFCC Traces Abuja Properties, 3 Accounts To Patience Jonathan (ynaija) by ridbay(m): 6:45am On Jun 08, 2017
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has traced another multi-billion naira property to former First Lady, Patience Jonathan, The Nation reports.

According to the newspaper, operatives of the EFCC have started probing the relationship between Mrs. Jonathan and two companies.

Three properties and accounts have reportedly been put under surveillance by the anti-graft commission as well.

The three accounts reportedly belong to Aribawa Aruera Research Foundation; Finchley Top Homes Limited and AM-PM Network Limited.

According to The Nation, investigations on the ex-First Lady and Aribawa Aruera Research Foundation led to the discovery the accounts.

EFCC investigators have however only established a link between Mrs. Jonathan and Aribawa Aruera Research Foundation.

A report indicated that Aruera Foundation is registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) with RC No 22805.

It said: “Huge funds were suspected to have been laundered into the accounts of the above mentioned companies and properties worth billions of naira were allegedly acquired by ex-First Lady Patience Jonathan through the aforementioned companies.

“Detectives were able to track transactions through open source information from interbank settlement

“The ex-First Lady and five others are trustees of Aribawa Foundation. Intelligence from Abuja Geographical Information Service (AGIS) revealed that a multi-billion naira property, Plot No. 1758B06 in Mabushi Area, belongs to the foundation.

“The said property is not such that a state Permanent Secretary in person of Mrs. Patience Jonathan can afford.

“The property should be marked as under investigation and interim forfeiture order be secured.”

A source said the ex-First Lady is being probed in connection with three other assets – Plot 96(DO5) in Karsana ; Plot 7109 (E18) in Wasa; and Plot 30 (DO3) in Idogwari.

Another source added: “We have conducted searches at the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) on the two companies whose accounts were earlier frozen alongside that of the ex-First Lady over $5.8 million which was reasonably suspected to be proceeds of crime.

“They were among the five companies and one Esther Oba said to be having a total sum of N7.4 billion in six banks.

“But their counsel Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN) succeeded in unfreezing the account on April 6 at the Federal High Court presided over by Justice Mojisola Olatoregun.

“This is a new investigation. It is too early to return any verdict on the two companies because our detectives are looking into their books.”

The EFCC had previously linked 13 properties to the ex-First Lady in Port Harcourt and Yenagoa.
