Funny enough, I never applied to any of the 4 schools I sent my scores to on GRE test day. This was because I had a different course in mind when I wrote my test but changed to something more preferable after d test.....(thanks to happyday and other gurus here for their pieces of advice). However, some of the schools I applied to just required an uploaded copy of these tests for application evaluation, so I didn't have to send my test scores to all the schools before getting the admission decisions. oh! I never knew. I'm seeing it for the first time that some schools require uploaded copy of score test. see d power of mailing grad cord! that's great bro. All d best! 1 Like |

seeker88: Hello Family, it's been a journey.. .
This is an update from me. Just wanna give a recap of my graduate school application journey so far. A prospective applicant may pick something from this.
I applied to as many schools as I could, not because I was confused but because I earnestly wanted funding as graduate study in d US would be impossible for me without any sort of funding. Also, as my intention was to switch from Petroleum Engineering to Mechanical Engineering, I needed to reach out to as many schools as I could afford. So I finally applied to 11 schools, got 5 admits, 5 rejections and 1 pending. Find below the decision from each of the schools:
Rejects : 1. Texas A&M University College Station (no reason) 2. Georgia Tech (Waitlisted and eventually rejected) 3. Louisiana State University (no reason) 4. Wichita State University (reason was that I didn't have enough prerequisite courses to get a slot in their MSc Mechanical Engineering Program). Meanwhile, I counted this school as a safe school. 5. Ohio University (same reason as Wichita State)
Admits 1. Texas A&M University Kingsville 2. Florida A&M University/Florida State University 3. Wright State University 4. University of Louisiana Lafayette 5. South Dakota State University
Pending 1. University of Arkansas
In all, I didn't get FULL funding from any of the admits as really desired. However, the offer from TAMUK became my best choice.
Then the schools that lured me into applying with their application fee waiver all rejected my application. They include Rensselaer Polytechnic Inst and Wayne State Uni. I didn't loose out though cos I didn't spend a dime applying to them.
Application Profile *Bachelor: Petroleum Engineering *UG CGPA: 4.23 (3.57 by WES evaluation) *GRE: 154Q, 151V, 4.0 *TOEFL : 91 *2 academic recommendations and 1 professional recommendation. *3+ years work experience (not in closely related field) *No research experience *All applications was for MSc Mechanical Engineering
My Observation *Apply as early as you can. If possible, submit ur applications before d priority deadline. In my own case, I submitted almost all my applications in Dec '16, but d major challenge was getting my recommenders to have their recommendation submitted, especially the academic ones. Some recommendations were received as late as 3months after application submission. So it's necessary to ascertain the availability of your recommenders before using them. *You can't be very sure of your "safe schools", so spread your tentacles and apply to as many schools especially the ones that require all materials to be uploaded online with your application. You never can tell which would come through.
Choi, I don talk too much already.... I wish everyone all d best. Cheers!
wow! this is just incredible! May God bless your huzzle bro...so, that means u sent additional GRE and Toefl score to 5 schools? |

That was a very good observation. It is unfortunate that students - undergraduate, M.Sc and even Ph.D - find ourselves in this 'Referee issh'. From my observation, reference letters, arguably in some situations, carries much weight than GRE itself in application packet. But, some lecturers are either not apt in writing or 'too busy' or don't even understand the implication of the letters. If you see the letters some lecturer writes, uhmmmmm .....It took me days to get a checklist assessed for a sound reference letter (available if you need a copy).
Possible Solution. 1. As an applicant, get a sample copy of a good reference letter and revamp it aptly. 2. Do not just pick Prof. as your referee, ask for their availability to assist before filling their names on your application (some schools may not alter it) 3. After persistent call and no response, take a time and travel down to meet the Prof. (remembering 'if Muhammed story ....) with your laptop, modem or a phone with hotspot. 4. If none works, make a request to the school for a change on your application.
As regards using 'fabricated e-mail account', it may be difficult because those schools might be aware of that possibility and some may even require official e-mail e.g successg@oau.edu. I believe those tips would yield a good response
ciao. Hello Hisvoice, I agree with all your points except with d 'fabricated email' issue. Not all lecturers/schools have official/school email address....like my Professor at University of Ibadan, he doesn't have any, so he uses ********@yahoo.co.uk...even if d student carry modem, laptop, printer, photocoping machin e.tc to lecturers, some will still give filmsy excuse....even if u carry cybercafe...some won't have time.... My only 2cent to prospective applicants is to try and persuade d lecturer, and if he doesn't turn up....simply get d reference letter manually by hand, scan it, create email address (or better still, if u have access or can create official email like @oau.ng.....which I doubt) then send it yourself using d email created. ..SIMPLE! NB: many applicants have suffered rejection from university due negligence of some lecturers... 1 Like |

tuffpuff: Good morning friends,
Update from K-State: They are unable to offer me Assistantship thus not recommended for admission. I tried all possible positions to sleep last night but rarely did. That I was waitlisted for GTA gave me an exponential hope. I'm perplexed whether to retake the GRE & TOEFL and aim for higher/competitive scores, or send current scores to other safe schools for Fall 2018.....my head is muddled with different thoughts. Though I contacted a Prof. in Canada who gave me a go-ahead to apply, I don't know the measure of solace to take in it. Please your suggestions would be highly appreciated. For all awaiting feedback, I pray for positive results. God bless you. hey tuffpuff. sorry about your denial. I believe it will surely end well. You can reapply against fall 2018 if u have a decent profile. According to SirRiddy, make contact with the professor before application and apply EARLY! Early application is also very important! if you have d financial capacity, apply to 2 schools above your profile, 2 schools within your profile and 2 schools below your profile and slot in your application around Sept/Oct....and I believe it will surely end well. If you have d opportunity of rewriting GRE...you can proceed....this is my one cent opinion tho.I believe you can do it! 3 Likes |

chuksGilb: Greetings Everyone,
I just recently got admitted to a fully funded Phd program in the US, I have received my I-20 and made my SEVIS payment. I would like to submit my DS160 and schedule an interview for my VISA but my school start date is the 28th of August. Can I go ahead with picking an interview date or should I wait for the 120 days window. Would scheduling an interview date before the 120 days window affect my chances of getting my VISA approved? congratulations chuksGilb. you can schedule your interview around june. I would appreciate.....if you can share your profile( i.e GRE, TOEFL, GPA, schools etc) for others to benefit from you. thanks! |
