In downtown Jerusalem, an American missionary stands and preaches about Jesus, about salvation. Loudly, publicly, undeterred. The scene seems almost surreal, yet it's typical for Jerusalem. People walk by. Some stop briefly, others keep going. Some ask him matter-of-factly why he speaks English and not Hebrew. Curiosity, irony, indifference, everything is there. Everything except aggression and violence. No one snatches the microphone from his hand, no one hits him, no one drives him away. Imagine the same scene in the Gaza Strip. A Christian missionary, preaching publicly, unprotected, with a Western identity. Unthinkable. Not because there's no one religious there, but because there's no religious freedom there, or anywhere else in the Middle East, for that matter. 1 Like
