The Politics of the Chad Basin II

Chad is the most important country of interest to Nigeria with regards to the Lake Chad Basin. Chad is the backbone of the Multi National Joint Task Force( MNJTF) which comprises of Nigeria, Niger, CAR and others. When it comes to the function of the MNJTF, Nigeria is mostly the cash cow. In some instances, sabotage results from a link to fragile to be trusted. In my own view, whenever the cash stop flowing from Nigeria, a systematic chain of events are created to make us fall back in line. You will mostly observed our presidents travelling to Chad for talks, when attacks intensify around the Lake Chad Basin.

Chad is involved in so many conflicts in the regions of West Africa, Central Africa and North Africa. Chad has been involved in a proxy war with Sudan, Libya and CAR on so many occasions. Recently, in November, 2018, Chadian forces penetrated hundreds of kilometres into Libya's desert region to reach the Al Jaqhbub Oasis. The region is rich in oil and oases. The Chadians wanted to obtain foothold in the region. They were repelled back, but still manage to go far. Chad is a member of many organisations dedicated to fight against insurgents, but sometimes can use other insurgents to wage war by proxy in areas where it has strategic interest.

The region in the Sahel is an enabling environment for recruitment of young boys to join all sorts of insurgents groups. Conditions such as unemployment, boredom, hopelessness etc are ripe. Most of the mercenaries recruited by insurgent groups come from this region. Around 6000 ISIS fighters that fought in Libya and Iraq came from this region, and they are now thought to have relocated back to the African continent and are on the offensive.

The proliferation of light and small arms into Nigeria has been influenced by the activities of insurgents groups and others in the Sahel region. After the defeat of Gaddafi by so called freedom fighters, a lot of arms supplied to those fighters by external actors and those in the armory of Gaddafi moved into wrong hands.

Nigeria needs to seriously consider the Lake Chad region. Efforts should be in placed to constantly monitor the activities in that region.

Those guys are precious assets to the agency concerning the amount money spent on them for training and years of on the job experience . The management don’t want to retire them yet concerning the security situation and upcoming election. As a nation we’re in precarious state. Regarding the recruitment, fund fund fund!

The House of Representatives has moved to review the age barrier in vacancies announced by the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigerian Prison Service, Fire Service, Standard Organisation of Nigeria and other federal government agencies.


This came after a deliberation on a motion of urgent public importance moved by Babajimi Benson representing Ikorodu Federal Constituency.

Mr Benson stated that most of the vacancies require that applicants must not be more than 30 years of age as at the time of applying for the vacancies.

He said with the unstable nature of Nigeria’s education system, it is difficult to determine and plan the age of graduation thus restriction on the basis of age is a breach of eligible applicant’s fundamental human rights as contained in Chapter IV of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.


The lawmaker expressed concern at the fact that the NYSC designed to foster national cohesion in the country with discharge or exemption certificate mandatory to get employment in the Federal Civil Service, pegs it admissibility age at 30 years.

“Citizens who serve at the age of 30 years will be denied the opportunity to be gainfully employed by the country they laboured to serve in the sun and in the rain.

“This development will lead to young Nigerians falsifying their ages to benefit from the available vacancies, an action that would further tint the integrity of the Civil Service,” he said.


He said 55.9 percent of Nigeria’s 196 million population are between 15-64 years of age and by capping job entry at 30 years of age, over half of the said population will be denied the opportunity to be gainfully employed.

“I believe that employment into the federal civil serwce after considering Federal Character should be on merit and competence without age barrier,” he added.

The House, thereafter, unanimously resolved to urge all Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDA) concerned to consider re-opening their online portal so that above 30 years but are still below 40 years can apply and be given equal opportunity.


It also resolved to mandate the House Committees on Labour, Employment and Productivity and National Planning and Economic Development to review the employability criteria of all MDAS to ensure no eligible applicant is discriminated against on the basis of age.

It also mandated the Committee on Legislative Compliance to ensure the deliberations and resolutions of the House was communicated to all MDAs and comply to eliminate discrimination in the civil service.

Dear Fellow Studnts,
I am a newbie here and would need some clarifications. I am enrolling for M.sc Peace studies and conflict resolution. I understand that the fees is as follows.1. First semester 35k. 2.second smelter 18k. 3. Project 40k. The question is this, after paying the 1st semester 35k, would I not be allowed to register and partake of the exam pending second semester when I will pay the 18k and 40k. Should I also pay the 40k project fee as a requisite for first semester course and exam registration? I am asking because the guy helping me to do all these after I gave him 35k is coming back to tell me that I must pay the 40k on or before Monday 30th April in order to complete exam and course registration. Please assist to clarify.

He's right. You need to pay the additional 40K for course registration. I also enrolled for the same course.

Where did you get this information from? Prisons recruitment is captured in the 2018 budget. For now, nobody is talking about recruitment at the prisons headquarters.
