The Senate of the University of Lagos may shut the institution’s hostels after its emergency meeting on Wednesday, Gisthubnaija has reliably gathered.

Sources in the Senate told our correspondent that the meeting was summoned to take a decision on the COVID-19 situation in the school.

“It should be a short meeting. We will be deciding on whether hostels should be shut and if physical classes should continue. Some of the students are already leaving the hostels even before our decision,” the academic staff said.

Our correspondent gathered that the meeting is expected to hold by 2 pm today at J. F. Ade Ajayi Auditorium.

Gisthubnaija gathered that there is panic among students and staff of the university over cases of COVID-19 recorded in the school.

Some students and lecturers in the university confirmed the development to source on the condition of anonymity on Tuesday.

They noted that students and workers in the hostels are mostly affected.

The spokesperson for UNILAG, Nonye Oguama, said “no comment” when contacted on the telephone.

One of the students, who reside in one of the hostels on the university campus, said, “We are having many people falling sick with COVID-19 symptoms. We don’t know what is happening. Many of us have to start going home instead of sleeping in the hostel.”

Another student confirmed that her roommate tested positive and had been isolated.

“Yes, one of my roommates tested positive. After that, we (other roommates) went for the COVID-19 test but returned negative. People are saying that there is Delta variant on campus but I don’t know how true that is,” the undergraduate added.

The management of the university also confirmed that UNILAG medical centre has recorded an increase in the number of patients with COVID-19 symptoms.

It also confirmed that the institution is being affected by a potential third wave of coronavirus in a ‘COVID-19 pandemic update’ published on the university’s website on Tuesday.

Iyabo Ojo has reacted to a tasteless video of an elderly man defending Baba Ijesha while tarnishing her image and wishing death on her for standing for the girl child.

Iyabo Ojo has been quite vocal in her call for justice for comedienne Princess’ underage foster daughter who was seen in CCTV footage being sexually molested by Yoruba actor, Baba Ijesha.

The principal of Knowledge Land School, in Igando, Alimosho LGA of Lagos State, Mrs Iromeri, has been accused of assaulting a 16-year-old student of the school named Moyo.

According to the victim’s elder sister, the incident occurred on Wednesday, February 10, 2021.

Men of the Ondo State Security Network known as the Amotekun corps have arrested a 46-year-old suspected serial r*pist and armed robber identified as Shina Adaramola.

Adaramola, who was arrested during the ‘Operation Clean Up’ exercise of the Amotekun corps, reportedly confessed to robbing over 100 houses and using charms to r*pe 50 women.

Family and friends of a 52-year-old woman, Theresa Nyorong Yohanna Bwai and her only son, Bweifar Isaac, 22, are mourning their demise.

Nigeria’s Chimamanda Adichie has been awarded the Women’s Prize for Fiction ‘Winner of Winners’ for her novel ‘’Half of a Yellow Sun’’.

A call for justice has been issued out over a 26-year-old man identified as wisdom who allegedly raped a 7-year-old girl.

According to Warri Aproko, the suspect committed the act on the 26th of October,2020, during the #Endsars protest in Abraka, Delta State and all efforts to get the police to arrest and investigate the suspect has proved abortive.

It is also reported that Wisdom is now on the run. According to medical reports, the suspect injured the little girl badly. Students of the Delta State Polytechnic, Ozoro are protesting against the N5, 000 COVID-19 fee imposed by the management.

Gisthubnaija learnt the protest, which started about 7am, saw several students at the institution’s gate and blocking the main entrance of the school.

The polytechnic had imposed a N5, 000 COVID-19 levy on all students returning for the 2019/2020 academic session.
