AgricultureNigeria's Food Import Bill Drops From $11 Billion To $4.3 Billion As Agric Booms by Rossikki(op): 10:29pm On Jul 14, 2014
Nigeria’s food imports decline by $5.3bn –Adesina

By Chibuzor Emejor / Abuja

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Akinwumi Adesina, has said the nation’s food importation in the last one year has declined by $5.3billion.

Speaking at the South-South Cooperation Achievements High Level Forum at the weekend in Abuja, Adesina said Nigeria earlier before now, spent over $11 billion on the importation of wheat, rice, sugar and fish alone.

He said in the last one year, additional nine million metric tonnes of food has been produced and added to the domestic food supply.

According to him, “The impact of the Agricultural Transformation Agenda (ATA) has been huge for Nigeria. In just one year, we have already produced an additional nine million metric tonnes of food.''

“At the same time, our food imports declined by $5.3billion. Over 2.7 million farm jobs were created which represent 77 per cent of our overall target.”

Meanwhile, the minister said Nigeria would save about $800 million annually from wheat flour import substitution with high quality cassava flour used in bread and confectionaries.

His words: “To reduce our almost $4 billion import bill on wheat annually, we embarked on the cassava flour substitution policy to replace some of the wheat flour used in bread and confectionaries.''

“As the commercialisation of cassava bread reaches its peak, it will reduce our import bill by at least $800 million and put this money back in the pockets of Nigerian farmers, processors and bakers.”

On South-South Cooperation (SSC), which is a tripartite venture involving Nigeria, China, and Food and Agriculture Organisation in support of National Programme for Food Security, Adesina sought the assistance of Chinese Government in the area of rice milling technologies and cassava processing plants, which would help Nigeria to be self-sufficient in rice production and boost cassava processing.

He further called for the support of the Vice Minister of China, Chen Xiaohua, in assisting Nigeria to secure agricultural financing loans from China Exim Bank.

Also speaking, the Chinese Vice Minister of Agriculture, said food security is fundamental to human survival and development and the right to food is the most basic human right.

Bilikisu Sungbo - The Queen of Ijebu ('Sheba'), Builder of the Eredo Earthworks of Ijebu-Ode Nigeria - Africa's largest man-made monument.

"In terms of sheer size it's the largest single monument in Africa - larger than any of the Egyptian pyramids" - Dr Patrick Darling

The ditch is 160 km (100 miles) long, and in places 20 metres (70 feet) deep.

..................................

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sungbo%27s_Eredo

Sungbo's Eredo is a rampart or system of walls and ditches that is located to the south-west of the Yoruba town of Ijebu-Ode in Ogun state, southwest Nigeria (6.78700°N 3.87488°E). It was built in honour of the Ijebu noblewoman Oloye Bilikisu Sungbo, and is reputed to be the largest single pre-colonial monument in Africa.

Description

Total length of fortifications is more than 160 kilometres (99 mi). Fortifications consist of a ditch with unusually smooth walls and bank in the inner side of ditch. The height difference between the bottom of the ditch and the upper rim of the bank on the inner side can reach 20 metres (66 ft). Works have been performed in laterite, a typical African soil consisting of clay and iron oxides. Ditch forms an uneven ring around the area of ancient Ijebu state, an area approximately 40 kilometres (25 mi) wide in north-south, with the walls flanked by trees and other vegetation, turning the ditch into green tunnel. As a construction project, it required more earth to be moved than the Great Pyramid of Giza, Egypt.

Eredo Earthworks

History

The Eredo served a defensive purpose when it was built in 800–1000 AD, a period of political confrontation and consolidation in the southern Nigerian rainforest. It was likely to have been inspired by the same process that led to the construction of similar walls and ditches throughout western Nigeria, including earthworks around Ile-Ife, Ilesa, and the Benin Iya, a 6,500 kilometres (4,000 mi) series of connected but separate earthworks in the neighboring Edo-speaking region.

Sungbo's Eredo has also been connected with the legend of the Queen of Sheba which is recounted in both the Bible and Koran. In the Old Testament, she is described as having sent a caravan of gold, ivory and other goods from her kingdom to King Solomon. In the Koran she is an Ethiopian sun worshiper named Bilqis involved in the incense trade who converts to Islam. Legends of the contemporary Ijebu clan link the Eredo to this fabled woman, a wealthy, childless widow who they know as Bilikisu Sungbo. According to them, the monument was built as her personal memorial. In addition to this, her grave is believed to be located in Oke-Eiri, a town in a Muslim area just north of the Eredo. Pilgrims of Christian, Muslim and traditional African religions annually trek to this holy site in tribute to her.

It is believed that the Eredo was a means of unifying an area of diverse communities into a single kingdom. It seems that the builders of these fortifications deliberately tried to reach groundwater or clay to create a swampy bottom for the ditch. If this could be achieved in shallow depth, builders stopped, even if only at the depth of 1 meter. In some places small, conical idol statues had been placed on the bottom of the ditch.

The impressive size and complex construction of the Eredo drew worldwide media attention in September 1999 when Dr Patrick Darling, a British archaeologist then with the University of Bournemouth, surveyed the site and began publicizing his bid to preserve the Eredo and bring the site some prominence. Previously, the Eredo had been little-known outside of the small community of residents and specialists in Yoruba history. Forty years passed between Professor Peter Lloyd's publication of his analysis of the site and that of Darling, but it still served to necessitate a complete rethinking of West Africa's past.

It has a LOT to do with 'the topic of the thread'. Do those faiths even accept that the soul transcends physicality? They seem to teach that the body and soul are the same thing. That 'once you're dead, you're dead'. You lose all consciousness until sometime in the future, when your dead body is 'resurrected' (dependent on if you'd practised their religion during your lifetime). That is why the idea of 'resurrection' is so important to them. Dead bodies returning to life, like some sort of divine zombies. They see man as the physical body. They are deceiving a lot of people.

You are wayyyy too trusting of 'scientists' my friend. There is a LOT of information out there that is not ''scientifically accepted'' which has absolutely nothing to do with how 'weighty' the evidence behind them is. There are powerful interests who fund these scientists and their research, and if any scientist were to stray from what is regarded as 'acceptable' they would lose their funding and support, and even their jobs and reputations very quickly.

Erm actually the past 50 years HAVE 'skyrocketed' development in Africa more than you can ever imagine. For starters you are educated, unlike your grandparents. Nigeria has 135 universities today. We had ZERO in the 67 years of colonial rule up till 1960. Literacy was at 8% at independence. That figure is 74% today. Infant mortality was at 280 per 1000. Down to 80 per 1000 today. We had no power stations at all built from 1897 to 1960. The little electricity found in a few colonial parts of a few cities were derived from huge generators imported by the colonialists. At independence our power generation capacity stood at 270 megawatts. That's over 8,000mw today. Not a single dual carriageway existed in Nigeria in 1960. Today there are thousands of miles of them. And thousands of miles more roads in general than existed during colonial rule.

As for the other unschooled garbage you typed about poverty in Africa , you need to watch less BBC and CNN and research PROPER news and information. When you do you will learn that Africa is NOT the poorest region on earth. Southeast Asia is.

Foreign AffairsRe: Were Would Europe Be Without Africa? by Rossikki:
Without Africa and Africans Europeans would still be cave dwellers without language or speech, illiterate, bearskin-clad, wild haired, unwashed, and knocking off each other with clubs. Africans civilized Europeans and brought them out of the caves of the Caucasus mountains in Russia (from which comes the word Caucasian). When the African pyramids and temples were already ancient relics, not a single European civilization was in existence. Homer of Greece, the first voice of Europe, emerged in 800 BC. By then African civilization had already peaked after thousands of years of glory, and entered its decline stages.

Here is the famous Egyptian Mural of the Races, found in the tomb of Rameses 1 (circa 3000 BC).

https://lvvfsa.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pWzNskhzb5KUZBbuzcFvvJacPP_SxFDH-etPbYsyWkqxuLJThJEi2z467vr4T4U5PYfAtSyM1JPB48WjixBxervSmFyJtlL-z/image004.jpg

Here the races are lined up according to their importance and level of advancement, as seen by Egyptians, the masters of the world. The Egyptian (black) naturally comes first, followed by Asiatics, then Africans south of the Sahara, and finally, the white man of Europe.

Jean-Francois Champollion (1790 – 1832) , famous French explorer, visited the site. His words:

"Right in the valley of Biban-el-Moluk, we admired, like all previous visitors, the astonishing freshness of the paintings and the fine sculptures on several tombs....Thus we have before our eyes the image of the various races of man known to the Egyptians and we learn at the same time the great geographical or ethnographical divisions established during that early epoch...

The variations I observed fully convinced me that they had tried to represent here the inhabitants of the four corners of the earth, according to the Egyptian system, namely: 1. the inhabitants of Egypt which, by itself, formed one part of the world ...; 2. the inhabitants of Africa proper: Blacks; 3. Asians; 4. finally (and I am ashamed to say so, since our race is the last and the most savage in the series), Europeans who, in those remote epochs, frankly did not cut too fine a figure in the world. In this category we must include all blonds and white-skinned people living not only in Europe, but Asia as well, their starting point. This manner of viewing the tableau is all the more accurate because, on the other tombs, the same generic names reappear, always in the same order. We find there Egyptians and Africans represented in the same way, which could not be otherwise; but the Namou (the Asians) and the Tamhou (Europeans) present significant and curious variants.....our good old ancestors, the Tamhou. Their attire is sometimes different; their heads are more or less hairy and adorned with various ornaments; their savage dress varies somewhat in form, but their white complexion, their eyes and beard all preserve the character of a race apart. I had this strange ethnographical series copied and colored. I certainly did not expect, on arriving at Biban-el-Moluk, to find sculptures that could serve as vignettes for the history of the primitive Europeans, if ever one has the courage to attempt it. Nevertheless, there is something flattering and consoling in seeing them, since they make us appreciate the progress we have subsequently achieved."

They probably felt their job of 'civilizing' man was done, and so they left, only making periodic visits now to see how we're getting on. Another reason could be that they had completed their gold acquisition mission in Southern Africa, known as the Abzu in the Sumerian texts, and had no more reason to be here.

No, they shouldn't return it. We don't deserve them.

Almost all the families I know with artefacts keep them under lock and key (mine included). Because Nigerians (Africans and Blacks too) are very backwards, sorry to say this.

Monotheistic Abrahamic religions came to China, Japan, Pacific Islands and Celts and Native American Indians and so much more. None of them went crazy, carried it on their heads and despoiled the works of their ancestors. Like Africans did.

As someone who buys artefacts (for preservation) and works to being a Historical art curator one day, I am ashamed of the Nigerian Gallery of Art and the National Museum. Whom are empty and filled with people who can't tell you an Onabolu from an Dale (both Nigerian). Even the private collectors are accused of being fetish-worshippers for trying to save our history.

If we return them, people will clamour for them to be destroyed because "my pastor said it is stopping my destiny from manifesting" or will sell them off for an ipad or Nokia Lumia. We Nigerians are not even INTERESTED in visiting them (you will see more whites asking me questions about Ife, Bini and Igbo-Ukwu than a Nigerian). So let people who can value this history (which btw is a great tourist attraction and would aid our broken economy) keep them.

And if you are interested in seeing a huge collection of them, please contact me. Or better yet, contact OYASAF.

PoliticsRe: 68 Per Cent Of Nigeria Urban Dwellers Have Access To Water – World Bank by Rossikki: 8:47pm On Jul 07, 2014
Eldavido1: Sixty-eight per cent of urban dwellers in Nigeria have access to potable water supply with 40 per cent
coverage in the rural areas, the World Bank said in a report on Monday.
The report titled: “World Bank Group-Nigeria’s Country Partnership Strategy (CPS) 2014 to 2017’’ released by
the bank in Abuja on Monday, noted that Nigeria has invested heavily in water supply and sanitation sector.
It said significant challenges remained and water provision or service is intermittent in the country.
“Currently, service coverage for potable water in urban areas is approximately 68 per cent and rural
coverage is estimated to be 40 per cent of actual demand for water supply.
“The water supply is still characterised by low level of coverage and access rate, low capacity with a poor
and disorganised funding arrangement.
“A recent analysis of the utility performance also indicates that there is lack of reliable management
information system, low capacity utilisation of the water treatment plants and high unaccounted for non-
revenue water,’’ it stated.
The report explained that the World Bank’s CPS programme was aimed at supporting efforts aimed to
improve governance in the water sector and increase access to improved water supply.
“Building on the lessons learnt and the ongoing Urban Water 2 project, the Water 3, will address governance
aspects such as institutional strengthening, policy and regulatory reform.
“It will also track system for access to potable water, service standards for state Water Boards and the
involvement of civil society in sector dialogue to increase transparency and accountability.
“The CPS support will be anchored at the federal and state levels in order to promote synergies between
state level reforms and federal awards of investment support,’’ the report stated.
It further explained that the CPS programme intended to increase the number of people with access to
water supply by four million.
“It is also expected to gain a 45 per cent average increase in cost recovery for operation and maintenance,’’
it stated.
The report stated that the Nigeria government through its water policy aimed to improve public health and
economic well-being of the urban populace.
“It will achieve these through provision of adequate, safe and sustainable water for domestic, commercial
and industrial purposes in a planned and coordinated manner at reasonable cost to enable water operators’
break even.
“Government agencies, state water boards and water utilities will benefit from the investment, capacity
building and advisory support to strengthen the water sector management and improve its financial
sustainability,’’ it added.

tuffgongjo: u have a point
Africa still has many potential Okochas, Kanus and Weahs around. The main problem with why they are not coming to the fore much these days is that European managers have devised a racist stereotype of who their typical African footballer must be. These days he must be ''big, strong'' or ''with pace''. He must be a brute, not a thinker like Okocha or Kanu. He must act as a defensive shield, or otherwise a ''powerful strong'' guy up front there to overpower opponents with his brute strength.

So any African player who does not meet these criteria is generally shunned by the ''top European clubs''. Look at Mikel. He was a skilful attacking midfielder on his way to becoming the next Okocha. Voted 2nd to Messi in talent at the 2005 FIFA Under 20 World Cup. Mourinho didn't want that. He wanted a new version of Makalele instead. Mikel turned from smart alec to thoughtless brute. This is why we need to develop and empower at least 5 or 6 African leagues so that they can become the base of our far more diversified talent pool.

omar22: Dumbo, ranting wont change the fact that you sound like an abandoned project. Answer this question, As an outsider what do you think of the human race?
DUMBO, FACE THE TOPIC DIRECTLY. HOW DOES MATUIDI'S SKIN COLOUR MEAN NIGERIA WAS NOT CHEATED IF FRANCE ITSELF IS A WHITE EUROPEAN COUNTRY WHICH HE WAS REPRESENTING? BRAIN-DEAD, STUPI.D DUNCE!!! OLODO RABATA.

omar22: You sound like someone who sold his car for fuel money. "If ignorance is bliss, you must be the happiest person alive" but "With your IQ, I don't think you would understand"
What does a motorpark tout like you know about IQ? So stupi.d you think Matuidi's colour comes into play when he's representing France? DUMB AND DUMBER. If what I explained makes no sense to you, it just goes to show how iredeemably dumb and stup.id you are, with rocks where your brain ought to be.

abatically: Thank u very much my brother. We must first solve our own problems and play at top level. After we do that we can then start tackling FIFA if we think we are being cheated.
You are the most stupi.d and ignorant person on this forum. So we should sit down, fold our arms, do nothing, and play dumb when we are cheated and have our rights trampled on at the World Cup, merely because according to you we have not ''solved all our problems yet''. Meaning basically we should walk around with an inferiority complex, and accept we don't deserve fair treatment. I mean, some of you are so dumb and stup.id and really deserve to be shot. Like i said, if the slave trade was still on today, wastrels like you will promote its continuation pending when we ''solve all our problems''. BRAINLESS GOAT. I bet when you see a white man all your 36 start flashing from pillar to post without reason. DUMBIT0 X 10000.
