Amid a global race to find COVID-19 vaccine, a team of Nigerian scientists recently announced the discovery of a novel coronavirus vaccine that may help prevent the SARS-CoV-2 virus infection, according to a report by The Guardian Nigeria.



The discovery of the vaccine for COVID-19, which has so far killed at least 465,300 people globally, was announced on Friday by Nigerian Universities’ Scientists.

Dr Oladipo Kolawole, a specialist in Medical Virology, Immunology and Bioinformatics, at Adeleke University, Ede in Osun, and leader of the research team, said during a news conference that the vaccine was being developed locally in Africa for Africans. According to Kolawole, the unnamed vaccine, when unveiled, would also work for other races.

Kolawole said the group had been working extensively by exploring the SARS-CoV-2 genome from African countries to select the best possible potential vaccine candidates. He added that after trying out some selected processes of vaccine development, the researchers were able to choose the best potential vaccine candidates for the SARS-CoV-2.

The unveiling of the unnamed vaccine would take a minimum of 18 months, Kolawole said, as a lot of analysis and studies, as well as approvals by medical authorities, were still required.

THE Ondo State Police Command on Thursday said it had arrested three persons in connection with a cult clash that occurred in some communities in the riverine Ilaje Local Government Area of the state.

It was gathered that the police made the arrest following a rival cult clash that happened in the Zion Area of Igbokoda, the headquarters of the council.

A yet-to-be identified person reportedly lost his life in the clash.

A source said the deceased was immediately buried by his cult group after the clash, but the men of the state Police Command had exhumed the corpse for investigation purpose.

The source said, “The cult members killed the boy, a member of a rival cult group in Igbokoda and everywhere became tensed.

“The boy and his friend were abducted by the cult group around Larada Street in Igbokoda. His friend escaped with serious injuries, but the deceased was not lucky as they shot and hacked him to death in the bush.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Tee-Leo Ikoro, who confirmed the incident, said the three suspects were in the custody of the State Criminal Investigation Department of the command.

These accounts of events that took place in combat situations paint both complementary and contradictory pictures of the role played by ritual and magic. They had seen how the van was left unharmed by the bullets, like a reversed magnet repelling the fire, and they too wanted to get the same protection. They came into the van, but confused the tanks and took ones that contained diesel, not the magic water. But they thought they were protected and went back into battle stronger and fiercer. The Kamajor stayed in the van with the real protection.3

BusinessDay gathered on Wednesday that the suspects who belonged to the “Aiye Confraternity” cult group had buried the corpse of the rival cult member in a shallow grave in a cover-up.

As at the time of filing this report, the identities of those arrested were yet to be revealed by the police. But, the PPRO said they had been moved to the State Criminal Investigation Department of the Command.

“Yes, it’s true that the members of the cult group were arrested in Igbokoda and the officers brought them into the SCID office here in Akure today for Investigation. I think about four people,” Ikoro said.

However, the activities of these cult groups had become a source of worry to many residents of Ilaje communities since last year.

Also, clashes between the cult groups had also been creating tension mostly for business owners who have been expressing fears following the level of insecurity in the communities.

One of the sources in Igbokoda who preferred anonymity revealed to our Correspondent that police have visited the scene where the boy was buried and exhumed out his corpse for Investigations.

The sources said, “the cult members killed the boy, which we also suspected as a member of another rival cult group last week Monday in Igbokoda and everywhere became tensed.

Men have forgotten God. Sin flourishes on every side. The pulpit fails to grip. Nothing less than an outpouring of the Holy Spirit can meet the situation.

How may we secure such an outpouring of the Spirit? By prayer! True--and the first thing we must do is we must deal with sin. Unless sin is put away we can pray until doomsday, and revival will never come.

"Your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid His face from you, that He will not hear" (Isa. 59:2).

Let us look at Joel. It is a call to repentance. God wants to pour His blessings upon His people, but sin has withheld the blessing.

"Saith the Lord, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning: and rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the Lord your God: for He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth Him of the evil. Who knoweth if He will return and repent, and leave a blessing behind Him?" (Joel 2:12-14).

Sin must be confessed and put away. "If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me" (Psalm 66:18). Let God search your heart and reveal the hindrance. I do not know what your sin is. You know and God knows. It may be you will have to forsake some cherished idol. It may be you will have to make restitution. Perhaps you are withholding your tithes from the Lord...It all lies between you and God. You may as well stop your praying and rise from your knees until you have dealt with it.

Let the Priests of the Lord Weep

Now notice Joel 2:15-17. After sin has been confessed and forsaken the prophet calls for a prayer meeting. "Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly: gather the people, sanctify the congregation; assemble the elders, gather the children... Now notice Joel 2:18: "THEN!" After they had forsaken their sin and cried unto God in prayer, "Then will the Lord be jealous for His land, and pity His people." The answer is not long in coming once the conditions have been met. "And it shall come to pass afterwards, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions; and also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my Spirit."

God is waiting for us. Are we going to keep Him waiting?

Abstract
Background: Information on life expectancy and risk factors for early death among patients with sickle cell disease (sickle cell anemia, sickle cell-hemoglobin C disease, and the sickle cell-beta-thalassemias) is needed to counsel patients, target therapy, and design clinical trials.

Methods: We followed 3764 patients who ranged from birth to 66 years of age at enrollment to determine the life expectancy and calculate the median age at death. In addition, we investigated the circumstances of death for all 209 adult patients who died during the study, and used proportional-hazards regression analysis to identify risk factors for early death among 964 adults with sickle cell anemia who were followed for at least two years.

Results: Among children and adults with sickle cell anemia (homozygous for sickle hemoglobin), the median age at death was 42 years for males and 48 years for females. Among those with sickle cell-hemoglobin C disease, the median age at death was 60 years for males and 68 years for females. Among adults with sickle cell disease, 18 percent of the deaths occurred in patients with overt organ failure, predominantly renal. Thirty-three percent were clinically free of organ failure but died during an acute sickle crisis (78 percent had pain, the chest syndrome, or both; 22 percent had stroke). Modeling revealed that in patients with sickle cell anemia, the acute chest syndrome, renal failure, seizures, a base-line white-cell count above 15,000 cells per cubic millimeter, and a low level of fetal hemoglobin were associated with an increased risk of early death.

Conclusions: Fifty percent of patients with sickle cell anemia survived beyond the fifth decade. A large proportion of those who died had no overt chronic organ failure but died during an acute episode of pain, chest syndrome, or stroke. Early mortality was highest among patients whose disease was symptomatic. A high level of fetal hemoglobin predicted improved survival and is probably a reliable childhood forecaster of adult life expectancy.

The Ogun State Command of the Nigeria Police Force on Tuesday intensified efforts against cultists in Ijebu Ode, who have been on a killing spree, with the arrest of several suspects from different parts of the town.

Unconfirmed reports claim that no fewer than 10 members of both Eiye and Aiye Confraternities, who had been engaged in a supremacy battle have lost their lives. Some of those killed had parts of their bodies hacked off and taken away as trophies by the killers.

But in an operation, which began on Sunday and might have been led by the Divisional Police Officer of Igbeba, CSP Musiliu Duga, a source told Uhuru Times that many suspects are now in the custody of the law enforcement agency following quality intelligence, which led the police to the cultists’ hideouts at Adefisan, Imoru and Iwesi (off Ibadan Garage) among others.

The source said, “We got quality intelligence from the people and that is why we were able to stop these killings by arresting many of those involved. Without the information provided by the public, there is no way we would have gone this far. It is our prayer that this kind of cooperation between the police and the public will continue because we are not God, Who knows everything.”
