My wife asked me for an allowance and i told her i couldn't afford it but i would rather she table her needs as they come so that i would solve them based on available resources. She got angry and refused to tell me her needs altogether except for pressing needs like making her hair, buying pads or recharge cards.

I don't have any problem with my wife coming to me every now and then asking me she needs this or that and i don't see any reason why she should not be able to tell me her needs.

After sometime, we had issues and she attributed it to my refusal to cater for her needs claiming that i should know when she has needs like changing her undies, buying her cream and toiletries or new clothes since we live in the same house.

At the end of the day, she decided to get a job and she is working now. I expect that since she is working and earning enough to meet her needs the problem is solved. But not at all. she's still calling me a wicked, mean and an 'akagum' of a man even though she doesn't contribute a dime of her income to the upkeep of the home.

Most ladies don't really know what they want. They'll tell you they want a honest, caring, God fearing, handsome, Intelligent and all the other good qualities kind of guy, but give them that kind of guy and they'll dump him for a bad guy. And then when you ask them why they'll say something like "you know, the kind is fine, caring and all that but i love him like a brother, let's just be friends" or "i just prefer this other guy".

One other thing i've noticed with most gals is that they're mostly influenced by their peer groups. Once their friends start hailing any guy and saying good things about him, they'll all want to be with him (That is why the fastest way to lose your boy friend to your friends is to start jisting them about his good qualities esp. how good he is in bed). But if the friends don't like you, sorry for you cos you'll have extra job to do on your woman in order to keep her. By then she'll think she's just managing you. This is common among younger women though.

I never knew Maids of honour, brides maid, bestmen, groomsmen etc are suppose to buy their stuff cos i provided for them all including the little bride and groom.

Nobody is meddling with the reserve. It's just that in trying to meet the excess demand for FX in order to protect the Naira, we have no option than to use our reserve. And as we continue to take out of it, without replacement, it's bound to go down.

The value of the naira is determined by the forces of demand and supply of FX. Nigeria is predominantly an import dependent country with only crude oil accounting for 95% of our export. When the price of crude crashed as a result of the crisis, our FX inflows dropped drastically but our outflows remained high due to the need to continue to import. Hence, the supply of FX could not meet the demand for it. That was why the Naira depreciated. However, because we had a high amount of foreign reserve we were able to make up for the difference.

Honda29 quite understood where i was coming from that was why he made this observation:

"The level of our foreign reserve is fast depleting (the actual level is now a state secret) and soon, particularly if the bust in the oil market continues much longer, we are going to have nothing to show for our huge earnings during the unprecedented oil boom and the fall in the exchange rate of the Naira against other currencies will get worse".

And i still insist that it was better that we had a lil something saved for the rainy days.

what i meant is that money generated from oil earnings is not the same as our foreign reserve because when oil is exported and sold, it is paid for in foreign currency. However, the CBN pays the Government the Naira equivalent of the transaction and keeps the foreign currency as our reserve. The Government then goes ahead to share these earnings among the three tiers of Government for onward spending.

When people learnt of the high volume of our reserve, some started clamouring for the money to be shared and spent and the CBN came out to inform them that the money is not available for spending as it had already been shared and spent by the three tiers of Govt.

Some still went on to clamour for the release of the foreign reserve into the market in order to increase the value of the Naira which Soludo resisted. As a matter of fact, He said it on national TV recently that he was queried over his refusal to release the reserve.

So, I didn't say he advised the government not dip into that fund for development (you can go through my mail again) as the money is not available for that purpose but to meet the demand for FX by those interested carrying out importation and other foreign transactions that require FX.

Agreed the naira is already in trouble though it's not about 200 to 1 but about 180 to 1. However, this is the black market rate. What is stopping users of FX from buying from the official source at about 146 to 1?

The crux of my argument is that supposing we don't have the volume of foreign reserve we had to cushion the impact of the crisis, what would be the faith of the Naira now? Ofcousre, it would have been worst than this.

The foreign reserve is not the excess crude oil account hence it is not money meant to be spent but money already spent. The excess money realised from oil earnings are usually shared among the three tiers of Government and it is not within the supervisory purview of Soludo to determine what they do with it.

I quite agree with you that our foreign reserve is fast depleting and if the bust in the oil market continues much longer the Naira will be in trouble, however, shouldn't we be thankful that something was kept for these rainy days.

He didn't cause the oil boom but he resisted the pressure from several quarters for him to fritter the foreign reserve away as many argued then that there was no need to be piling up so much foreign reserve.

When the price of crude oil crashed and our inflow of dollars depreciated remarkably it was the accumulated foreign reserve that was used to meet the demand for FX ( and is still being used) that resulted from the higher outflow else the Naira would have depreciated even worse than it did.

Aside from recapitalizing our banks, he also grew our foreign reserve to over 60 billion before the meltdown.

This had also assisted in weathering the storm of the crisis.

I've seen women breastfeed their babies in church, market, buses and all manner of public places and have never seen anything wrong with it nor considered it distracting for that matter. Frankly, i've always seen it as the norms in this part of the world (Naija).
Infact, i know of instances when some shy mothers were rebuked for refusing to breastfeed their babies when they are crying for food in church. And i'm not talking about the village here .

I'm already well positioned in the front row of the class with my pencil and jotter in hand waiting for chapter 1.

It all depends on the situation in which i had to make the choice.

On my scale of preference, my wife and children comes first.

however, There are instances when i attend to my extended family needs before that of my wife.

For example, when my wifey needs me to buy her some expensive clothing, take her on an expensive outing or organise an expensive birthday bash for her or our child and my younger brother is at the verge of being thrown out of school cos he couldn't pay his fees, i'll surely pay his fees first.

Or my parent is lying critically ill in a hospital and treatment is denied him or her cos she couldn't afford the initial deposit, i'll surely ask my wife to wait.

Dat goes even for friends and people i'm meeting for the first time.

But don't get me wrong, if it's my wife's or children's school fees against that of an extended family member, then i'll pay my wife and children's own first.

Same thing goes for the "lying critically ill in a hospital" scenario.

In conclusion, it all depends on the basis of comparison.

Sorry, i didn't know you meant youth service when you said your friend was earning 18,000.

However, i was a living witness to the case of the doc that was earning 120,000. He actually negotiated the pay cos he was so good that his name was ringing bell all over the village. He floored all the other doctors in the village and the council chairman was impressed with him.

But to be frank with you, i don't know what the LGC was paying him as a corper cos the negotiation happened when he completed service and was about leaving for his place. The chairman virtually beg him to stay back.

He eventually left after a couple of months cos he said his people needed him.

I really envied him then.

As way back as 2003, i know of a corper doctor in my village that was earning 120,000.00 naira per month from the Local Govt Council .

Same thing happened when Alams escaped from UK detention and showed up in Bayelsa dressed like a female.

I remember we also had a crowd of such supporters when YEAA organised it's infamous 2 million man march in support of Abacha's continuity in office. We had famous celebrity musicians and commedians from all over the country performing on stage and showing their support. The slogan then was: If not him, who? If not now, when? Meaning there was no other Nigerian who can rule the country at that time except him.

We need a value re-orientation. Like it or not, corruption has come to be accepted by all and sundry as the norms in Nigeria. Even foreigners come into the country with that mindset.

If we all believe in the Holy Trinity and that Jesus Christ is God then i don't see why it's so difficult for us to accept that anyone who believes in God and keeps His commandments will go to heaven.

Jesus Christ summed the commandments into two: 1. Love God, 2. Love your neighbor,

IMHO, when Jesus told the disciples the story of the good Samaritan, He was teaching them that anyone who keeps these commandments, irrespective of country, tribe or province, has gained salvation.

Most of us Christians, Moslems and people of other religious leanings were born into our various religions with little or no choice as to the religion we belong to. If God had wanted only one religion on earth, He could very well had done it.

I just don't subscribe to the belief that once you answer the altar call and make the confession "i accept Jesus as my lord and personal saviour" you have gained salvation. God sees the heart not what we profess.

So, i think it is wrong to conclude that only Christians will make heaven and all Muslims are hell bound.

Anything that goes into a person's mouth goes into his stomach and then on out of his body. 18 But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these are the things that make a person ritually unclean. 19 For from his heart come the evil ideas which lead him to kill, commit adultery, and do other imoral things: to rob, lie, and slander others.
Somebody reasoned that alcohol is bitter so why take it? Forgetting that there are sweet wines and alcoholic drinks.
My conclusion, don't let anybody make you feel guilty for taking alcohol. But please, do it in moderation. Just remember the rule "too much of everything is bad"

I disagree with you cos Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10: 7-10: 7 Go and preach, 'the kingdom of heaven is near!' 8 Heal the sick, bring the dead back to life, heal those who suffer from dreaded skin diseases, and drive out demons. You have recieved without paying, so give without being paid. 9 Donot carry any gold, silver, or copper money in your pockets; 10 donot carry a beggar's bag for the trip or an extra shirt or shoes or walking stick. A worker should be given what he needs.

On the issue of wealth and riches, you have gotten it wrong cos in Matthew 6: 24, Jesus Christ told his disciples that no one can be a slave of two masters; he will hate one and love the other; he will be loyal to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
Also, in Matthew 19: 23-24, He said '' I assure you: it will be very hard for rich people to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 I repeat: it is much harder for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God than for a camel to go through the eye of a needle."

I really appreciate you for starting this thread and bringing enlightenment to Christians who have been in the dark concerning this "modern day" tithe issue. You and others have proven beyond any reasonable doubt dat tithing is not required of us as christians and is therefore, not mandatory.
Thank God that those arguing for tithing (having tried fruitlessly to defend their arguement) have shifted grounds and agreed that it is not compulsory to pay tithes neither is it a requirement for getting blessings from God, and they have also agreed that no punishment is reserved for non-tithers.
It is for these reasons, and for the fact that you have said it time and time again that you are not against tithing as a from of giving to the church, that i called for an end to this arguement.
It is pointless to keep repeating yourself over and over again. A word, they say, is enough for the wise.
I share your views 100%.

The TRUTH of the matter is sipmly that the LAW OF TITHING does not apply to XTIANITY. However, if any xtian chooses to be paying 10% of his income to God via church/pastor, he will surely reap God's blessings for so doing.
People should also note that Matthew 23:23 earlier on referred to by some people in this forum, which they also interpreted to mean that Jesus "commended the Pharisees for paying tithes and rebuked them for omitting or failing to do the weightier matter of the law" was as at the period the law was still in operation. Jesus,therefore, would not object in anyway the payment of tithes or tell people to stop paying tithes because the people then were still operating under the OLD TESTAMENT and it is also a form of giving to God/men.
THE NEW TESTAMENT/CHRISTIANITY began after the death of Jesus Christ- our Testator- on the cross. Then the law and the curses of the law ceased to operate beacuse we now have the fulfilment of the law in JESUS CHRIST HIMSELF.

* The leaders of the early church ( born after the death of Jesus Christ,pricesely on the day of penticost in the Acts of Apostles) never at any time placed/read curses on believers for not paying tithes but ENCOURAGED BELIEVERS TO GIVE GENEROUSLY TO GOD & GOD'S PEOPLE without compulsion but out of a willing heart because they new that the more you give,whether 5%,10%,15%,20% , , the more you recieve God's blessing: ", he who sows sparingly,shall reap sparingly, he who sows bountifully shall also reap bountifully, "
Therefore, let all our fathers in the Lord,pastors/church leaders, stop pronouncing/reading curses to the congregation of God's people on the issue of tithing but rather encourage believers to give generously ang cheerfully " , for God loves a cheerful giver."
* Let those who have been faithful/regular payer of tithes keep it up while seeing this practice as a devotion/service/worship to God rather than something they must observed by compulsion if they are to evade the curse attached to it by the law.
* Let those who have been hiding under the umbrella of the saying that "xtians are not mandated to pay tithes" and as a result are being stingy as in not fulfilling their financial obligations to their pastors/church, go and pray that God should forgive them for such attitude of ingratitude to God & men.
* Let everyone go and learn to give generously,cheerfully( not because of curses), and bountifully to God's works, pastors, orphans, widows, and the needy. They will surely reap bountifully. ", he that sows sraringly shall reap sraringly, and he that sows bountifully shall also reap bountifully."
* Let every xtian learn to read GOD'S WORD without PUTTING ON RELIGIOUS GOGGLE: Read the Bible with an open mind and stop reading to criticise/judge other xtians because we are not called to criticise/judge one another.

Enough said. I don't think there is any need to over flog this tithing issue. The topic had been very educative and informative and i for one has really learnt from it. I don't think any further arguement will add value, rather, the law of diminishing returns is likely to set in.
Dammy4U had said it all in the above quote. Any other arguement is a waste of time and effort.
As far as i can see, both sides have come to an agreement. I say this because, if we're not arguing for any one of the following statements:

1. Tithing is a sin
or
2. Tithing is mandatory and non payment will result in curses and absence of blessings from God

then we don't have an arguement

I wish you all more understanding of the word of God and the spirit and grace of not just being hearers of the word but doers as well.

I'm not against the payment of tithes just like i have nothing against giving money to the church, but my problem with those arguing for the payment of tithes is their believe that failure to pay your tithe will attract punishment from God and sanction from any form of blessing. They believe strongly in obeying the laws before anything else just like the Pharisees.
I want to refer you to Matthew 12: 1-14 where our Lord Jesus Christ spoke about one of the Laws (Sabbath).
I'll quote just a few of what he said there:
" It is kindness i want, not animal sacrifices. if you really knew what this means, you would not condemn people who are not guilty"
When they wanted to accuse Him of doing wrong by healing on Sabbath day He had this to say to them "What if one of you has a sheep and it falls into a deep hole on the Sabbath? will he not take hold of it and lift it out? And a man is worth more than a sheep!"
So if you are truly a Christian you'll give priority to showing love to your neighbour over keeping the laws.
