He said the three Boko Haram leaders were killed in a military operation at Wamakko Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

How true is this story? You mean the Chief of Army Staff don't know that Wammako LGA is in Sokoto State not Kaduna State. The Chief of Army Staff should do his home work before releasing statement to the press.

Travel / N50 Million Fraud:richard Mofe Damijo (RMD), On The Run by rusep: 10:43am On Feb 20, 2013
SOURCE: http://saharareporters.com/news-page/n50-million-fraud-delta-tourism-board-gm-efcc-net-commissioner-rmd-reportedly-run

Philo Nkem Ajufo, the acting General Manager of Delta State Tourism Board, has been detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja over her role in a financial scheme. Ms. Ajufo is reportedly being quizzed for conniving with her boss, Richard Mofe Damijo (RMD), to embezzle N50 million from the state Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Mr. Mofe Damijo, a well known Nollywood star, is the commissioner in charge of the ministry. Our EFCC said the commissioner was also being sought by the anti-corruption agency, but he has been elusive.

An EFCC source confirmed Ms. Ajufo’s arrest. “As we talk, the Delta State Tourism GM, one Mrs. Nkem Ajufo, is been held in our headquarters here in Abuja over her involvement in the N50 million fraud. Her boss, Mr. Richard Mofe Damijo, is not left out but as we speak he is still avoiding us,” said the source.

Two sources at the ministry told our reporter that the EFCC last week delivered a letter inviting Ms. Ajufo to appear at their headquarters. She was reportedly asked to bring along relevant documents concerning the N50 million that was meant for the purported 2007 Delta Expo event which never held.

The sources disclosed that Mr. Mofe Damijo went underground on learning about the current development.

One source told our reporter that the commissioner, who is reported to be building himself a massive underground edifice in Lagos, was trying to use political contacts in Delta and Abuja to scuttle the EFCC’s investigation and washed his hands off the scam.

SaharaReporters learnt that Mr. Mofe Damijo denied knowledge of the money during the budget defense exercise.

Several calls and sms texts sent to Mr. Damijo and Ms. Ajufo’s mobile lines were not answered. After a while, the commissioner switched off his mobile phone.
Late last year, Saharareporters had broken the news of the N50 million allegedly embezzled by the commissioner and the acting GM of the state’s tourism board.

Several sources in the commissioner’s office had confided that a former commissioner in the Ministry had applied for the N50 million to organize the “Delta State Expo 2007,” disclosing that the state could not release the funds then due to some financial challenges. However, when the funds were released into the Tourism account in May, 2012, Mr. Mofe Damijo allegedly said that the ministry could no longer carry out the event since it had elapsed by six years and Deltans would have forgotten about the event.

But our reporter obtained “Forms of Advance Warrant” on release of funds from the Ministry of Finance indicating that the N50 million was supposed to be spent on the original event for which it was approved. The warrant order, numbered 00000117, 00000114 and 00000115, was signed by one Ms. P.O. Evuojapha for the Commissioner of Finance.

SaharaReporters learnt that N35 million of the N50 million was supposed to have gone to the tourism board.

A reporter for SaharaReporters learned that Mr. Mofe Damijo issued a check to the tourism board in the name of its acting GM, Ms. Ajufo. She in turn reportedly deposited the sum into her First Bank private account with account number (3006131619) operated under her name, Nkem Philo Ajufo. Our sources said she and Mr. Mofe Damijo subsequently shared the money.
Politics / Nigerian Fraudster Jailed Two Years For Involvement In Lotto Scam by rusep: 10:22am On Feb 19, 2013
Source:http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/nigerian-fraudster-jailed-two-years-for-involvement-in-lotto-scam/139935/

His inclination to crime is worrisome. Much before he turned 25, he had devised ways of cheating the British system. And in 2005, the UK Immigration Service caught him after finding out that he had used a forged stamp on his travel passport to enable him to work in the country.
Quickly, he was deported to Nigeria.

At that time, Osas Odia, from Edo State, was just 25. It is not known how long he had worked before he was caught.

But he soon found his way back to the UK, after marrying a British nurse. The marriage is believed to have taken place in Nigeria. With a spousal visa, he got back into the UK and continued in his old ways.

Odia was said to have joined a group of Nigerian fraudsters who used different means of swindling unsuspecting members of the public. The fraud gang was said to have sent thousands of letters to people across the world telling them they had won millions in the lottery. A lottery that never was. Many people in Nigeria received similar mails.

The scam letters told the recipients they would have to send money to 'unlock' their huge windfall, which they had won in the said lottery.

Perhaps greedy people fell for the scam without asking themselves whether they actually played any such lottery to win the huge sum that was supposed to be awaiting them.
One victim, Betty McClellan, 62, wired £264,000 to the fraudsters to release her 'lottery win'.

When the big sum never arrived, Mrs McClellan was shot dead by her husband, Hersey McClellan, 63, in their Los Angeles home in 2010, for wasting the life savings of a family on a “gamble.” He then turned the gun on himself.

And that ended the story of the McClellans.

An elderly woman living in Bristol also lost £312,000 after she wrongly believed she had won £1.8 million in the Australian lottery.

But eventually, Odia did not escape justice. He was arraigned before a Crown court to account for his misdeeds.

Prosecutor Andrew Evans said the loss of the money had a devastating impact on the Bristol woman.

“She was buying a new home and intended to settle the balance from the winnings she was expecting,” he told Croydon Crown Court. “She is now living in sheltered accommodation and feels vulnerable and extremely embarrassed and her family has lost their inheritance.”

The victims also included a farmer from Indiana who lost £339,000 in the hope of winning £14.9 million and a Venezuelan businessman who lost £163,000.

The police, which investigated the network of the scammers, identified 13 victims worldwide, who each lost an average of £207,000, after they became convinced they were due to receive huge pay-outs.

Odia's role in the conspiracy was to launder some of the money which was sent by the victims through three bank accounts in his name.

The Nigerian pleaded guilty to conspiring to launder criminal property and was jailed for two years on Friday.

Odia was allowed to finish his degree before he was sentenced.

Delivering his judgment, Judge Jeremy Gold QC told Odia: “You are a man of some ability and you have just completed a degree and I hope that means you will not be tempted to return to this sort of offending. “You played a full part in laundering the proceeds of a sophisticated fraud.”

The revelations of the depth of the fraud and its devastating effect on some homes shocked Odia’s lawyer, Paul Brill.

According to him, 'He (Odia) is alarmed and upset by the nature of the fraud and did not realise people's life savings were being taken so callously in the way they were.

“His previous conviction was for a false stamp in his passport that allowed him to work. He is not workshy and has a strong work ethic.”
It is understood that Odia will be allowed to stay in Britain when he is released because of his marital status.

The gang’s leaders, who spent the money realised from the scam deals on property, were jailed at an earlier hearing for conspiracy to defraud.

Obinnam Nwokolo, 37, of Erith, was jailed for six years and four months and Uchechhukwu Onuoha, 40, also of Erith, was jailed for five years and two months.

Another money launderer, Sergius Ene, 44, of Ilford, was jailed for 16 months.

Several cases like this had caused a review of immigration laws and a fiercer relationship with immigrants in the UK.

The bodies are decomposing and the stench emanating from them envelopes the neighbourhood.

No one could say how they bodies got there, who killed them or identify any of them.

Residents were seen in groups discussing the development in hushed tones.

Governor Peter Obi was out of town, but government sources said he had been notified and was monitoring the situation through his commissioners and local government officials.

The traditional ruler of Amansea Community, Igwe Kenneth Okonkwo, was dumb founded.

The river which is now polluted by the dead bodies serves the five communities Amansea, Ebenebe, Ugbenu, Ugbene and Oba-Ofemili .

The State government dispatched a delegation led by the commissioner for local government ,Lady Azuka Enemo and Chairman of Local Government Chairmen in the state,Mr. Dazza Udozor to assess the situation.

“We have not seen this kind of thing before, it is a horrible sight,” she said, adding:“we have seen a lot of dead bodies numbering about 14.May be we have not seen the last of it because they are still floating in the water down to Anambra river.

“When we were informed, we also duly informed the security agencies and we believe they will carry out investigations to tell us actually what transpired.

“Also, we have contacted our neighbour state, Enugu Government, because this is a waste of human lives. We cannot fold our hands claiming that nothing could be done”

The traditional ruler of Amansea community said the development remained a mystery to everybody.

The state Police Command pledged to unravel the mystery behind it.

Politics / Court Jails Two Pastors 10 Years Over Illegal Banking by rusep: 9:01pm On Jan 08, 2013
Two ‘men of God’ Pastor Glory Abrefera and Reverend Vincent Okpogo have been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment each by Justice Ibrahim Buba of the Federal High Court, Asaba, Delta State. Justice Buba found Pastor Abrefera and Reverend Okpogo including their company, Mustard Seed Micro Investment Limited guilty on a four count charge of carrying out banking practice without licence. The accused persons were said to have collected over N1 billion from different individuals and organizations as deposits in an illegal banking practice. They have also failed to account for all the deposits they collected.

Mustard Seed Micro Investment Limited was convicted on two counts and fined N2 million on each of the counts. Pastor Abrefera and Reverend Okpogo, both directors of Mustard Seed Micro Investment limited, were also convicted on two counts and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment each. They were equally fined N2 million on each of the counts. The terms are to run concurrently.

The accused persons were said to have sometimes between 2006 and 2007 at Warri, Delta State engaged in banking practice without the required banking license and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 2(2) of the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act, Cap B3, Vol 2, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

Part of the charges reads: “that Pastor Glory Okeoghene Abrefera, Reverend Vincent Okpogo and Mrs Nonye Abrefera (still at large) whilst being directors of Mustard Seed Micro Investment Limited sometime between 2006 and 2007 at Warri, Delta State within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court knowingly consented to the carrying on of banking business without a valid licence by the company thereby committed an offence contrary to Section (2) and 49(1)of the Banks and other Financial Institutions Act Cap B(3), Vol 2, laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004”.

The so-called men of God were arrested following a petition filed by some of the depositors to the EFCC, detailing the dubious activities of the accused persons. The EFCC subsequently intervened, investigated the activities of the voodoo bank and arraigned the suspects in 2011.

Counsel to EFCC, G. K. Latona described the judgment as a milestone in the Nigerian judiciary. He said it was the first time that persons were convicted for carrying out banking practice without the required licence. He said the judgment would serve as a deterrent to other persons engaging in such nefarious activities.

Politics / A Gunman Set A Trap And Shot And Killed Two Firefighters In United State by rusep: 8:52pm On Dec 24, 2012
A gunman set a trap and shot and killed two firefighters responding to an early morning blaze in Webster, N.Y., police officials said. Two other firefighters were also shot and both are listed in guarded condition at a local hospital.

"It does appear that it was a trap that was set for first responders, but the cause or reasons we don't have at this time," said Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering as he described the scene where shots were fired at West Webster firefighters when they arrived at 5:35 a.m. to battle the blaze along Lake Road. Webster is about 10 miles east of Rochester.

The apparent gunman was found dead at the scene, but it’s unclear if he was killed by a self-inflicted gunshot or if it was from a weapon from police officers who were chasing him.

The victims were Mike Chiapperini, also a lieutenant and public information officer with the local police department, and Tomasz Kaczowka, Pickering said.

Chiapperini was described by Pickering as a lifelong firefighter who started with the department's explorer program and had about 20 years of experience. Kaczowka was a younger firefighter and was also a 911 dispatcher, he said.

West Webster firefighters Joseph Hofsetter and Theodore Scardino were seriously injured and are at Strong Memorial Hospital with gunshot wounds, a hospital spokeswoman said. Scardino has injuries to his chest and lungs. Hofsetter was injured in the pelvis, the spokeswoman said at a media briefing.

An off-duty police officer from nearby Greece, N.Y. John Ritter was also injured by shrapnel during the shooting, Pickering said.

Pickering said that one of the firefighters who survived made his way across a bridge to get to safety. The other three did not make it across, Pickering said. Police arrived and rescued the other three firefighters, but two were fatally shot, Pickering said.

"These are volunteers who get up in the middle of the night to fight fires. They don't expect to be shot and killed," a tearful Pickering said at the press conference.

The morning scene was described as chaotic as police and firefighters dealt with an immense blaze as well as gunshots, local news station WHAM-TV reports.

“I’m not aware of anything like this happening in Webster, obviously not a firefighter being fired upon,” Webster Fire Marshal Rob Boutillier told the Democrat and Chronicle. Pickering described Webster as resort lakeside community that is quiet and usually peaceful.

There at least four houses that have been damaged by the fire along Lake Road, WHAM-TV reported. Firefighters had to leave the scene and stop battling the blazes while police secured the scene. They continue to battle the blaze.

Politics / Nigeria: Yakowa Was An Appeaser, Not Much Of An Achiever by rusep: 10:17am On Dec 24, 2012
President of Civil Rights Congress of Nigeria (CRC) Comrade Shehu Sani has described the Governor Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa of Kaduna State, who died in a helicopter crash recently, as an appeaser and not much of an achiever.

Speaking in an interview with Daily Trust in Kaduna yesterday, Sani said the late governor could not achieve much for the ordinary man in the state as his stewardship could not be noted for the schools he built or the hospitals he constructed or the housing estate he built for the poor.

"Northern Kaduna wanted him to be a stooge while southern Kaduna wanted him to be an ethnic irredentist and a bigot. He spent the better part of his era pleasing and appeasing. He pleased traditional rulers, religious leaders and godfathers", he said.

He said Yakowa when he was alive he wanted his kinsmen to see him as a champion of their interest and aspirations while he also wanted northern Kaduna to see him as a unifying figure, saying if he had committed himself to the interest of the common man, he could have achieved both.

"The late Governor Yakowa is gone; he was a man of peace; a man who aspired to be a governor for all, a Herculean task for a deeply divided society. A society divided along religious lines cannot make a hero from a man who tries to satisfy both sides. We live in a society where you must take side to make a meaning.

"Yakowa's place in history will continue to excite mixed reactions. A man of Yakowa's status is most likely to be loved and hated. He is loved by his kinsmen who see him as one of them and he will be hated by his kinsmen who think he should have done more. Yakowa is loved by those not his kinsmen who think he served all equitably and was hated by his same stock who think he lived for his kinsmen," he said.

Yakowa when alive, according to him, surrounded himself with jingoists, xenophobes, parasites and loyalists to the seat of power who alienated him from the reality and basic needs of the common man, saying they fanned the embers of discord between him and his deputy.

Yakowa was not noted for corruption or flamboyance. He was a simple and humble man and his family has also proven to be so but leadership requires more than that, he said.

The preoccupation of his government, he said, was peace and security, saying the state had suffered worse in that aspect as billions of tax payers money went into the endless pit of security yet "churches were targeted at ease and hundreds of Muslims living in Southern Kaduna were slaughtered in cold blood'. "He met a divided state and left a divided state," he lamented.

On the new governor, Sani said Governor Muktar Ramalan Yero said the new governor is more of a technocrat who operated behind the scene. "He was emasculated and strangled for the period he served as a deputy governor. We are hopeful that he will bring to office his energy, vitality and zeal as a young man and we are hopeful he will use his experience in private and public life to chart a cause for his himself," he said.

Standing5: Also in the most southern Nigeria cities one can easily notice the rise in no. of new generation of northerners now migrating there. You will find them trading and driving okadas, yet there is no guaranty that these movements will reflect in the next census exercise. don't also forget the Boko Haram effect.

I honestly agreed with you but it is unfortunate you hide the fact that it is the Northerners that marry early, have more than one wife and they don’t practice family planning. The problem of an average Southerner is hypocrisy that why the Western World even though most of you accepted their religion didn’t trust. I am sorry if i hurt you but that is the fact.
