Pro-Biafra protesters under the aegis of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) on Thursday brought Owerri, the Imo State capital to a standstill. The Biafra agitators, who have so far taken their protests to all the major cities in the South East and South South geopolitical zones, defied the heavy presence of security agents and marched through the major roads in Owerri chanting Biafra slogans. Hundreds of policemen de- ployed to the area did not confront or attempt to stop the protesters. The police merely followed them from one point to another. Most of the protesters brandished the Biafra flags and carried placards with inscriptions such as "Release Kanu Now", "On Biafra We Stand", Kanu Has Done Nothing Wrong." The protest caused grid- lock on the roads as most residents close their shops to join the agitators. The protesters received mass supports from the residents who cheered them on as they marched through the metropolis. Mr. Ugonna Onuka, a resident said: "This is the time to prove to the world that the days of fear are over and with this kind of courage, Biafra is becoming a reality." Commenting on the protest, the State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Mr. Andrew Enwerem, said that his men allowed the protesters to move freely because they were not a threat to public peace. Enwerem said: "There was no need to violently confront them because they were peaceful and it is a dividend of democracy." Meanwhile, the meeting of the South East governors, Ohaneze Ndigbo and other Igbo stakeholders called by Governor Rochas Okorocha on the growing protest by MASSOB and IPOB, scheduled for Owerri has been shifted to Enugu. In a statement by the governor's Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo, he said Enugu was considered because of the people's acceptance as the political capital of the region. He said the meeting will hold on November 17 and expressed the hope that the parley would douse the tension in the zone occasioned by the arrest of the Director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu. Also yesterday, the authorities of the Nigeria Police Force debunked media reports that their officers shot, maimed and killed MASSOB and IPOB members during their protests in some states of the federation. The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Solomon Arase, in a statement signed by the Force Spokesperson, Olabisi Kolawole, said that despite the acts of provocations dis- played by the MASSOB and IPOB by infringing on the rights of innocent Nigerians, the police maintained a high sense of professionalism and responsibility during the period of the protests. The IGP therefore called on well-meaning Nigerians to disregard the allegations by these groups, describing it as false and a calculated attempt to attract undue attention and sympathy. He also called on the leadership of Ohaneze to wade into what he described as "these superfluous protests" to save the law-abiding and innocent citizens in the affected states from the hardship being meted out by the groups. He reminded those embarking on violent protests/assemblies that such actions are criminalised by law and that anybody arrested will be treated as such under the appropriate legislations.

I have noticed some miscommunication and misperceptions about what the Biafra movement is about. Here are 9 key facts about the NEW BIAFRA that everyone should know. (1) Biafran agitation has nothing to do with hydrocarbon crude oil deposits in Niger Delta. Imo, Abia, Anambra are currently oil producing states in Nigeria, with huge natural gas reserves not forgetting the enormous untapped coal deposits in Enugu. (2) Biafra is not land-locked. It has numerous access to the sea, including through the River Niger. (3) Biafra entire population is about 35 million people which is greater than the population many advanced countries in Western Europe, including Switzerland, Luxembourg, Belgium, Holland, Austria….etc (4) Biafra does not or in any form signify war, violence, armed struggle or any sort of physical confrontation. BIAFRA IS NOT WAR! It simply means political, economic and socio-cultural freedom from a feudalist State ruled by terrorists and Jihadists. (5) Biafra is not a call for massive exodus to Igbo land. Put differently, every Igbo or Biafran must not live in Biafra land. Those who wish could still maintain their residency wherever they are as well as own properties anywhere in the world, including Lagos, Abuja, Kaduna, Kano, Abeokuta…etc. (6) Independent and sovereign Biafra will never translate to loss or forfeiture of landed properties of her citizens in Lagos, Abuja or anywhere in Nigeria. There are many domestic and international treaties, conventions and laws that protects Assets of non-citizens everywhere in the World, that will apply appropriately. (7) The NEW BIAFRA shall be a coalition of desirous and willing ethnic nationalities in defunct Eastern Nigeria and would never be a forceful annexation of any unwilling ethnic nationality within its current geo-political definition. Ijaws, Ogonis, Ibibio, Anangs, Efiks, Ogojas, and host of other ethnic minorities shall possess the privilege to decide whether to tango politically with their Igbo brethren or go their own separate ways or remain part of current structural deficient Nigeria. ( Biafra is a train of peace and liberty. A desire for liberation from institutionalised stumbling blocks like quota system and federal character principles in Nigeria’s quasi-unitary society. It is a movement against internal colonialism, tribal gang-ups, economic marginalisation and political subjugation of Igbo and ethnic minority neighbours.(9) It has nothing to do with hate, bigotry or ethnic chauvinism. Just a desire to live in a healthy society where your tribe, tongue, religion or creed does not define who you are or how far you would go in your career.

I am in urgent need of a shop in umuahia. |
The tribunal judgement that upheld the abia state governor's election, and the aftermath has indeed shown that abia state is a peaceful state. Weeks before the much anticipated tribunal judgment, there were threats and counter threats from both parties that all hell will be let loosed if the judgement is not in their favor. I have been monitoring the situation since the judgment was announced yesterday and I have not seen any act of violence. I have decided to relocate my business to umuahia, and I want nairalanders in umuahia to help me look for a vacant shop in umuahia that I can rent. Every information supplied on this thread will be appreciated. You can also contact me on this number 08024114163. Thanks for your help. |
