Dear NL.
Recently, I was offered admission into a federal university to study psychology. I've always wanted to be a lecturer, so I opted for a course that wouldn't be much of a problem to me. My plan is to give in my best so as to come out excellent, go for my Masters abroad and venture into lecturing. The problem here is: my parent doesn't buy the idea. They keep saying that landing a lecturing job is hard to come bye these days, that I might end up being disappointed. Moreover, a course such as psychology isn't one to expect any thing good from, especially here in Nigeria.
Now they are pleading I consider Nursing, according to them, I stand a higher chance of getting a job in a nursing profession to psychology. They are planning on sending me out of the country after the program. Should I just dash off my dream of becoming a lecturer to pursue nursing?. I love being around young people, and being in a university setting as a lecturer gives me that privilege to teach, mentor and guide them and at the same time work on my self. I think I'll find fulfilment as an academic. I'm confused, what would you advise me, if I were to be your brother?

Your parents advice is not bad. they just dont want you to put all your eggs in one basket as .you can study nursing and still do your masters in clinical psychology. and still.be a lecturer.

lecturing Job would be easy to come by in the next few years, you only have to be humble enough to receive the small pay in private university. NUC has over 50 private universities awaiting accreditation. with time, as you mingle with the professors in government, when they see how wonderful your publication are, they might get you in. morrver, you are financially boiyant to afford MSC abroad.

Right now, I am confused if I should stick with the govt teaching job or I should go for the contract bank work which initially is for a period of 1 year after which it might be renewed (dicey). Pls I need the advice of people who have been in my shoe or in it currently? Which do I go for? What do I do?

Generally in igbo culture there is nothing like "independent man" or "independent woman" when it comes children unless it is so in your own community. If my own sister should have a child outside marriage, that child belongs to my family as "independent woman" no reach that side. In a situation where the lady is from where it is okay for a man to be recognized as the father of the children without being married to her, will your kinsmen who never went to the lady's family with you acknowledge the children?

There is a raging case in Kenya involving a Nigerian by the name Charles Emedo, the Kenyan lady who had 2 children with him after living 9 years with him died in September with about $20,000 hospital bill and is in legal tussle with the woman's family who claimed he never married their daughter as no dowry was paid. They were fighting over who would bury her, the Nigerian guy without the woman's family knowledge went to the mortuary yesterday (Saturday) to collect the corpse and cremated it immediately. It is a big case and I am very certain Kenyan government will not allow him to leave Kenya with the 2 children he had with her.

A Religious woman lacks basic understanding and is uninstuctable, a hard nut. She is not virtuous and will feed you unhappiness in time to come. She will pray, fast, and sing, but you will be left uncared for.

Follow your heart to the doorsteps of a God-fearing woman or a woman who is teachable. There you will find rest. She will listen to your words and please you. She will rub off on you the genuine love she has for God.
