There are lots of them. Come to Owerri and you will find them. Need I mention your hospitals that give preferential treatment to non-catholics?
I only asked of the name and address. A Catholic hospital that gives preferential treatment to non-Catholics? I don't seem to understand what you are against anymore. You first complained of one that do not employ non-Catholics, now you are complaining of the ones that give preferential treatment to non-Catholics.

This is why i love my current job and my Chairman. He does not pretend about these things. No prayers before or after meetings, no coming together to sing praises, just get the job done and where the company returns profit at the agreed threshold, there is profit sharing.

In my last employment, they pray most, they lie most to junior staff and they pretend most to outsiders. I so could not work with the executive management because of the hypocrisy, I left.

I am a practical christian and believe strongly in Ecclesiastis 3: 3.....There is time for everything under the sun....

I am also aware that I should pray unceasingly, but i will rather pray the type that Nehemiah did when he was called in to see the king and make a request......He said a silent prayer in his heart....that place was neither a church nor a synagogue. Same way my office is what is it and the business of the office is office business

With the above thought process, how could anyone ask of my religion with a desire to know whether i pay tithe or not? Anyway, i could never have interviewed such an organisation in the first place.
Bro it all depends on where you work.

In my work place, we pray every morning before we start work for the day, infact we have a pray ground where everyone come to from different departments.

I have also previously worked in places where we simply come and resume work no prayers!

But if I have to choose a hundred times over, I will choose this place where we pray first! Sometimes I wonder if all our staff are born of same parents because this place is more like a home than a mere office. Even with almost 200 staff, this is one of the most peaceful, truthful and conducive place to work.

So it all depends on where you work and the kind of people there.

Ask the interviewer to show him his own first.. grin grin

guy, you need to be sharp wink
Lol interviewers can be funny sometimes but denying him that job for that reason isn't right.

Sometime ago my HOD interviewed a guy, after he answered every question and it's obvious he's qualified for the job, she threw the most ridiculous question "are you born again?"

Why it is funny here is because my HOD is a Rev Sr and the guy is a non-catholic, again the hospital is a Catholic hospital but they don't even consider people's religion during employ as we have many muslim employees. Again the Catholic notion of being born again differs from that of pentecostals. And this question is completely irrelevant around here yet she went ahead to ask him.

The guy looked at her and according to him, in his mind he was like "trick don enter this interview" grin

There and then the guy denied being born again! When he said no, she looked intensely at him and said "you will resume work on the first day of next month"

Till date we still make jest of the guy for denying his being born again because he acts like one, but he got the job anyway. grin

I could've understood if the said man asked the op the question and still gave him the job.

On the contrary, not all Catholics pay tithe, my parish doesn't pay tithe, and hey the Catholic parishes that collect tithe also call people out like the pentecostals, the only difference is; they don't threaten people or say you are a thief if you don't pay and also they don't keep record of it like most pentecostal churches do.

QueenAzibar:
yeah I'm Catholic too. all Catholic churches collect tithe. doesn't vary with parish as we are all one.
This is no entirely correct. Not all Catholics parishes pay tithe. Till date my parish doesn't pay tithe, but I've also been to parishes where tithe is being paid

And yes the Catholic church officially doesn't preach tithe now, that's why today, you don't hear of tithe being paid in Vatican.

sweetcocoa:
Not all.

The ones that even do, started not too long ago, it wasn't in the doctrines of the catholic church to pay tithe, they just couldn't see their pentecostal and other counterparts prosper from tithing extortion, without doing nothing, so they joined.smiley
You are very correct. And this is especially happening in Nigerian Catholic churches.

I remember some year back I read an interview the veteran actor Pete Edochie granted to one of these magazines published by seminarian in seminary schools, (either Enugu or Onitsha dioceses) I can't remember precisely.

Prior to then, I've never heard or seen people pay tithe in any Catholic church.

In that interview, Pete Edochie was like encouraging Catholic Churches to start collecting tithe like our pentecostal counterparts instead of depending on "merger collections" to fund the church. I was surprised! shocked

I went to Onitsha the next year (exactly in thesame church were I saw the magazine the previous year) to my surprise, they have started paying tithe!

Though they don't force people or threaten them with the so called devourer whatever, I wasn't happy about the development. Gradually today many priests are towing thesame path.

I still trust my Catholic brethren, they even give five or ten naira for tithe cheesy

But seriously this isn't right.

Vatican discontinued tithing and Nigeria is just introducing it. Smh

From Today's readings LV 19:1-2, 11-18

“Speak to the whole assembly of the children of Israel and tell them: Be holy, for I, the LORD, your God, am holy.“You shall not steal.
You shall not lie or speak falsely to one another. You shall not swear falsely by my name..."

I praise the saints of the old testament and hold them a lot in high esteem, do you know why? I will tell you. There's this primary school maths book called lacombe maths, it was more difficult to grasp than the one in "Key to success". Even when it was difficult to comprehend physics using the book by Abbot, it was easier to understand same thing when you read from the one written by "PN Okeke and others", Or which is easier to comprehend prose between "Lonely Londoners" and "Eze goes to school". How easy was it to grasp chemistry using the book authored by "Holdernes and Lambert" to using the one authored by "Osei yaw Ababio". Modern day students use visual aids and it's much easier to understand things than earlier. So when God charged the Israelites to be Holy, His method of being holy, which was made up of thou shall not this, thou shall not that... was like using one of those old books to study.

I say this because in our relationships, It's never enough not to curse a child; you have to bless sometimes. You can't be termed affectionate just because you do not beat your wife; you have to caress her often. How can you be called kind for not defrauding your neighbor; you have to lend a helping hand too. This is just how it goes, It's ok not to do wrong, but you're better of doing right. Dear brethren, we are in the Lenten season, searching ourselves, seeking to desist from one vice or the other, to untangle ourselves from the bond of one sin or the other, yes, yes, it's good, yet the best way is to attempt the practice of the opposing virtues, let the glutton fast, let the slanderer praise, let the selfish show generosity, that's more like learning and understanding using the more modern and easier method. You will rise faster.

That's why the Master Himself, Our Lord Jesus, in teaching about Holiness in today's gospel, gave us an insight into what it demands when he said " ...Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me..." MT 25:31-46. This is what we'll be judged with, this is what will make us holier, this is what will bring us closer to God, this is what we need this lent. When you keep the "thou shall not do", that's ok, but if you don't settle for less, then you'll go for "thou shall do". Recall that when the man told Jesus that he had observed all the "thou shall not...", Jesus looked at him and Loved him, but when Jesus wanted something higher for him; he told him "thou shall do...". Mk 10:21.
May our Lady Intercede for us.

Good morning brethren, a splendid day ahead to all.
The bold says it all. You see, most times we are simply satisfied and confident in the fact that we don't do wrong that we neglect doing right, I once met a guy who said all he needed to make heaven was; obey the ten commandments.

Sure it's good to obey the ten commandments but it's also obvious that these ten commandments are about things we ought not to do. But then if there are things we shouldn't do, are there not things we ought to do? If you do only harken unto things we shouldn't do while neglecting the ones we should do, we still find ourselves being guilty of "omission"

May God give us the grace to steer clear of things we ought not do while not neglecting the ones we ought to do.

Thanks bro for this insightful exhortation.

Asalam Alaikum, am a corp member serving in in rivers state posted to onelga at omoku, My PPA was in aggah community secondary school, we Muslim are facing serious challenge here, firstly no mosque, the biggest part of it was dat de don't allow our hijab sister to use small hijab not to talk of big one de it was use by dere masquerade to.an extent dat de igwe told us dat if de attack d girl dat he won't do anything, so we re confuse and dis is also happening in some of d state local government not here only.
I know omoku though I don't know the said community, I think there's a small mosque in omoku but there's a bigger one at Obrikom about five mins drive from Omoku market. If you won't mind, you can sacrifice N200 to and fro to go for jumat service.

Again for the Hijab issue, yeah they might attack you especially if you wear long hijab. Infact there masquerade festival at Obrikom ended 2 days ago and if you had seen it, you will notice there is little or no difference between it and long hijab, that's why they don't like people wearing it.

Be careful some Omoku boys are rough and there's so much fight and uproar there these days, they may willingly attack you for such flimsy excuses and since the igwe already warned you, he won't do anything to them.

I suggest you use head scarf now for your safety. Though I know few people who still use the hijab but its somehow risky.

Hope this helps

Note this:

The above is compulsory on ash Wednesday and good Friday as It's difficult for one not to be able to fulfill the basic requirement for this on such days. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, neither the law of fasting nor the law of abstinence obliges. If in doubt, please ask your parish priest or confessor.

However, Other forms of “fasting,” especially regarding alcoholic drink, needless television, video games, Internet use and social entertainment, and such as i posted earlier... on pg 314... is of true spiritual value and is strongly encouraged.

Airport workers, travelers, and others while on board ships or airplanes are dispensed from the laws of fast and abstinence for the duration of their journey (except on Good Friday). It is desirable that they perform some other pious act instead.

Hope this suffices.
Sure it does! Thanks

Fasting, abstinence and alms giving as requested by wonda26 and highlighted in today's reading of (Is 58:1-9)

All around us, people often keep away from something. Each time we "keep away from" anything, we actually abstain from that thing. So abstinence is got from keeping away, hence to abstain from drink is to keep away from drink, to abstain from gossip is to keep away from gossip, to abstain from going to a parish is to keep away from that parish. Abstinence could be for a period of time, or for a life time.
However for Catholics and for the purpose of lent, abstinence strictly means to keep away from meat.

Generally speaking, once abstinence is about food and drink; it is called Fasting. Fasting could be said to be divided into two.
The first is complete abstinence from food and drink (the type the jim jim brothers and sisters dey do before deliverance session). This fast was total, and a means of watching and waiting…i.e; for something. Recall the type king David did in (2Samuel 12:16-20), when he was waiting on God's decision regarding his son. This is the nature of the fast prescribed by the Church before Holy Communion...at least 1hr.
The second fast is a fast of abstinence from certain foods, e.g., meats or fats. This one is partial, and more an act of self-discipline and self-control. Chai...It is the failure of our first parents to adhere to this fast (Gen.2,3) that brought us to this situation...common to abstain from one fruit out of many...there is God o my people. But it's not all gloomy, after all it brought us Jesus and showed us the extent the creator loved His creature.
Fasting in the Catholic discipline involves eating just one full meal in a day...from tradition it's usually lunch.., then something could be taken at two other times; which if the two are combined cannot be equal to a full meal. Chai...this church eh...my burden is easy and my yoke is light.

We fast to keep the body disciplined and subject to the spirit, food strengthens the flesh and from experience we've seen that the flesh is better a servant than a master. In (Gen. 3), the flesh lead our first parents, when they obeyed the flesh's dictate, they failed the spirit and disobeyed God. Even in (Jer 5:7), God complained about the children of Israel thus: "...I fed them to the full, they committed adultery" smh. However the second Adam, Jesus Christ, thought us the way to go, He fasted for a period of time, when the devil tempted him with food as he did our first parents, Jesus exposed the secret that his earlier victims did not know "Man does not live by bread alone" (Matt.4:4).
Fasting for the catholic and especially during lent is compulsory for all adults, but exempts the aged and weak. The range of this age, varies from place to place depending on the conference of Bishop's decision.

Christian Fasting is not just about abstaining from food, it's about promoting the works of the spirit as such times. Acknowledging the Godliness in us and making it visible to others, that Godliness is made manifest when we exhibit the fruits of the spirit in our spiritual and Corporal works of mercy. This involves alms giving (the act of giving to the poor) in different forms during the fasting periods, for this is the demand of God. Since we are asking for pardon by showing our remorse, and seeking to please God, we give alms. Please see today's reading (Isaiah 58:1-9) on the fasting that pleases the lord.
Fasting for the catholic and especially during lent is accompanied by prayers and good works, this promotes the works of the spirit and keeps the flesh under subjection.

Finally let me paste here the guide to Lenten fasts for those in nigeria, as published by the archdiocese of Lagos sometime ago, the dates are removed.

ARCHDIOCESE OF LAGOS - LENTEN REGULATIONS

1. The Holy Season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday
2. All the Faithful are bound by the Divine Law to do penance (C. 1249).
3. Penitential days and time in the Universal Church are every Friday of the year and the period of Lent (C. 1250). In Nigeria, the Catholic Bishop's Conference lays it down that abstinence from meat or favorite dish, drink or smoking, is to be observed on all Fridays.
4. Abstinence and Fasting are to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday (C. 1251).
5. The Law of Abstinence forbids flesh meat, but no eggs, milk products, sauces or soups, even if made from animal fat. This law binds all those who have had their 14th birthday (C. 1252).
6. The Law of Fasting lays down that only one full meal is to be taken in a day. This law binds all those of adult age i.e. all who have celebrated their 21st birthday until they begin their 60th year.
7. Others forms of Penance such as regular attendance at Morning Mass, Stations of the Cross, an hour of Adoration, help to the needy, etc are high recommended.

Sorry about the length, I couldn't make it shorter.

Good morning brethren, a splendid day ahead to all
Thanks for this update, I learnt a lot .
For someone who can't fast, how can he supplement that?
