The Federal Government has approved the establishment of the Federal Polytechnic of Oil and Gas in Bonny, Rivers State as a practical expression to improving access to tertiary education in Nigeria. According to a statement issued by the Special Assistant to the Supervising Minister of Education, Mr. Simeon Nwakaudu, the new school also received a N1 billion take off grant to commence operations. The statement disclosed that President Jonathan also approved the appointment of Professor Elijah Tamuno Iyagba as Rector, and Mr. Willabo A. Gilbert as Registrar. "The President further approved the appointment of Mr Akpomeyoma Gabriel as Bursar and Mr Ata John Woke Ajala as Polytechnic Librarian," the statement read. The Supervising Minister of Education, Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, according to the statement lauded the establishment of the school. FG has released N1billion for the immediate commencement of the Federal Polytechnic Ile Oluji-Oke Igbo Local Government Area of Ondo State. It will be recalled that the President had earlier approved the commencement of Federal Polytechnic, Ukana in Akwa Ibom State where he released N1billion for commencement of academic activities and Federal Institute of Building Construction Technology, Uromi in Edo State. Minister of State for Education, Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike formally handed over the letter of approval of the new Federal Polytechnic to the government and people of Ondo State at the weekend in Akure. He thereafter, accompanied the Ondo State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko to Ile Oluji-Oke Igbo Local Government Area of Ondo State where he met with the Oba of the area, who was full of gratitude to President Jonathan. President Goodluck Jonathan in the letter signed by the Honourable Minister of State and Supervising Minister for Education, Barr. Nyesom Wike, said “the new institution is established to provide increased access to our teeming youths who are yearning for tertiary education and to provide skilled middle level manpower for national development.” While justifying the choice of Ondo State, President Jonathan said “the establishment of the Polytechnic is informed by the fact that there is no Federal Polytechnic in Ondo State as is the case with some of its peers in the South West zone of the country. Governor Olusegun Mimiko expressed happiness over the siting of a Federal Polytechnic in Ile Oluji, in Ile Oluji-Oke Igbo Local Government Area of Ondo State by the Jonathan administration. Speaking today at the palace of the Jegun of Ile Oluji, Governor Mimiko, said he received the letter announcing the establishment of the Polytechnic from the Federal Government and decided to locate it in Ile Oluji. Governor Mimiko said the initiative is to him in fulfilment of the President’s promise to give Ondo State its dues in country. And a realisation of his dream to have a befitting institution established for our State in Ile Oluji. He enjoined the people to continue to support the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan’s administration for its love and kindness to the State. It will be recalled that a false rumour of a polytechnic allegedly rejected by Ile Oluji led to a communal crisis not long ago. Governor Mimiko said he hopes that the siting of the Federal Polytechnic will put to rest all acrimony and ill will in the community and the local government at large. The Federal Government has approved the establishment of a federal polytechnic in Akwa Ibom State. Delivering the letter to that effect, the Minister of Education, Nyisom Wike, stated that the Federal Government’s approval for the establishment of the institution was in recognition of the Governor Godswill Akpabio-led administration’s commitment to the development of education and infrastructure in the state. Governor Akpabio, while thanking the Federal Government, announced that the institution would begin operations by September at the Independence High School. He also stated that temporal site would be at Ukana in Essien Udim Local Government Area and noted that the Federal Government had already approved the sum of N1 billion as take-off fund for the project. While announcing the appointment of Professor Oluma Joseph as the Rector of the new polytechnic, the Governor stated that, the State Government would begin the rehabilitation of existing infrastructure at Independent High School, Ukana as its contribution to the project.
