You can open the GIC from Nigeria yourself.

Step 1…Open a dom account on your name (my wife used Access Bank for hers 2years ago).
Step 2…Have your girlfriend/fiancee transfer the funds to your dom account (I used WU to transfer the money to my wife’s dom).
Step 3…Open a GIC account with CIBC. After the account has been opened, CIBC will give you thorough details (including codes I think) of how to have the money deposited into your GIC account from your Naija Dom.
Step 4…Print the instructions from CIBC and go to any of the Big Access Bank in Lagos (Preferably in Ikeja if you’re in Lagos) because not all of their branches do it. My wife couldn’t get it done in Ogun State and she had to travelled to Lagos.

I really can’t remember the full details but I’m sure Access will charge you substantial fees for this and the money should arrive in your CIBC GIC account within 5business days after it’s deducted from your Naija Dom account.

Note: I did a 13k cad into the gic for a one year program at the time for just living expenses after paying her full tuition of about 19k cad. This is a great way to show them you have funds for your upkeep already in Canada. She went to CIBC the following day she got to Canada and she was able to opened an account with CIBC and first installment of 4k cad was deposited in her account and the rest comes in installments for the next 11months. She’s been in Canada for almost 2years now.

She can’t open a GIC for you. GIC can only be in your name and the funds must the wired from your account.

Well, IMO this is how IRCC will see it — they’ll be wondering why you have a GIC account in Canada. You would have to explain that your girlfriend helped you open a CIBC account to deposit your money and invest in a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC).

Now, how do you think that will look? Anyway, do what you feel is best, but in my opinion, that doesn’t sound like something that would work. A GIC is a bad idea for Proof of Funds (POF) because IRCC wants to see liquid cash readily available in your account.

If you have, say, $60,000 in cash and another $35,000 in a GIC — and maybe a family member helped open that account under your name — that could make sense.

Anyway, I’m not sure why you specifically want to use a GIC, since you haven’t given the full reason. If you were already in Canada as a student and just wanted to save your money, then yes — a GIC would be a good idea. But if you’re in Nigeria and your girlfriend helped you open it, it just doesn’t look right, to be honest.

Bank statement (main account) – make sure your Access Bank account shows the inflow from Stanbic and that the balance reflects the required POF. Include 6 months’ statement to prove financial consistency.

Letter of explanation (LOE) – attach a simple explanation in your study permit application: explain that you had the funds invested in a fixed deposit for safekeeping and have now liquidated them to make funds available for your studies.

At this point, the key is to make your Access Bank account look strong and reliable*at the time of application. Immigration officers want to see you have funds readily available, not locked away.

2. Strengthening Your POF

To solidify:

Get official bank reference letters from both Stanbic IBTC and Access Bank confirming account ownership, balances, and dates.
Ensure no sudden suspicious large deposits shortly before application (except the liquidation inflow, which you’ll explain).

3. If You Do Another Program After 1 Year ( FYI do not tell IRCC you want to do another program after 1 year for now)

Yes — if you enroll in another program after your first year, you’ll need to show proof of funds again when applying for a new study permit or extension (unless you already qualify for PGWP and plan to work instead).

Example: If you finish a 1-year program and apply for another program, IRCC expects to see POF for that new program (tuition + 1-year living expenses).
If you transition directly to PGWP, you don’t need POF anymore.

1. Your wife is pregnant. If you decide to apply with her, without showing proof that you can pay for birthing in the is , you will most likely be refused. Whether that's your intention or not cos Nigerians have perfected the lie of ' I didn't know I was pregnant' or ' I didn't plan to use the visa for birthing' so they have decided to be mean ( which I support btw)
2. You do not need an invitation from your uncle to get a visa. You can get a hotel reservation. Even if you decide to stay with family, iv letters are not asked for.
3. Whatever purpose you actually desire to travel for, use that. Neither conference nor visit carry a higher weight than the other

Specficity of purpose is key. Yes one may go for a vacation and conference at the same time.
BUT... In a Case such as yours, where you are willing to just settle for any conference that would ' add positively to your profession while you are there', it would be a drag to your aapplication because you will not be conversant with all the nitty gritty of the conference and the vo will see through that.
A VO may also see it as a ploy to just get a visa anyao anyao. Get a specifc purpose and stick with it

It seems you simply want a "conference" for purposes of obtaining a visa. That is fraud.

As long as the conference organiser did not indicate that the conference is for only locals, you're 100% free to apply. However, the VO has the final decision. For instance, there is a conference in US i recently scheduled an appointment for and i have confirmed if i am good to apply as i'm travelling from Dublin. I emailed them and i also gave them phone calls and i got positive reply. I'm the type that always make sure i provide more than required documents for visa applications, so i always communicate directly with conference organisers by email to confirm the validity & genuineness, where i am coming from to attend the conference. They always give me the best answer.

However, always try to contact the conference organiser and let the organiser know that you're coming from outside the state even though you have indicated that on your online conference registration form.

PLEASE NOTE: This is only what i've been doing myself.

Least i forgot, if anyone need 100% free conference, let me know, i will try find one for you. Not guarantee, but i will try. I've given just few people and some of them got their US visa with it. Once you should your conference are of interest i will contact you via nairaland mail if i get any for you or not. Pls don't send me pm about this, don't leave your contact details here.
