Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, on Sunday confirmed the killing of a councillor by gunmen in the just-concluded governorship poll.

The victim represented the Owerre Ezukala community in the Orumba South Local Government Area.

It was gathered that the tragic incident happened in Owerre Ezukala Ward 1 on Saturday.

Gunmen reportedly stormed the voting centre in the Owerre Ezukala ward one and shot the councillor while he was attempting to cast his vote.

Speaking shortly after being declared the winner of the poll, Soludo paid tribute to the councillor, identifying him as a member of the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

“I also note with sadness the sad news that some hoodlums went to a community. We understand they came from across the border, caused mayhem and even killed one of our supporters, a councillor who had just voted and was heading home,” he stated.

“They accosted him and shot him dead. That’s a councillor and an APGA chieftain. It’s very unfortunate. May his soul rest in peace.”

Soludo, however, commended security agencies for thwarting plans to disrupt the governorship election.

The members of the committee, which includes the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, Retired IG, retired IGP Usman Alkali Baba, and AIG Olatunji Disu, were accompanied on the inspection by the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara.

Former Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Ayodele Fayose, has urged Governor Biodun Oyebanji to disregard social media criticisms and what he described as “cheap blackmail” from those he called “players of morbid politics.”

Fayose made the call on Tuesday in Igbara Odo-Ekiti while commissioning the newly reconstructed 14-kilometre Igbara Odo–Ikogosi road, as part of events marking Oyebanji’s third anniversary in office.

Speaking before a large crowd, the former governor praised Oyebanji for uniting Ekiti leaders across party lines and steering the state toward progress. He noted that the recent All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary in the state had revealed some betrayers within Oyebanji’s camp, but urged the governor to forgive them in the spirit of political maturity.

“I am not here today to praise you, but to celebrate with you,” Fayose said. “Don’t be bothered about blackmailers and wailers barking at your backyard, especially those making negative narratives on the internet. The people of Ekiti are not moved by their rantings.”

Fayose commended the governor’s humility and inclusiveness, saying his achievements and style of governance had earned him popularity among the masses. He also recalled reconstructing the same road project 21 years ago, expressing delight that Oyebanji had further improved on it.

The National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rauf Aregbesola, and former Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Prof. Kolapo Olusola-Eleka, have condemned the attack and burning of the party’s secretariat in Ado-Ekiti, describing it as a grave assault on democracy and political tolerance.

Residents and party members reportedly woke up on Tuesday to find the ADC secretariat completely razed, with office equipment, plastic chairs, canopies, and sound systems destroyed.

Hours later, suspected hoodlums were said to have regrouped and invaded the venue of the party’s planned affirmation ceremony, attacking members, vandalising vehicles and motorcycles, and disrupting the event.

Aregbesola, who arrived at the scene shortly after the attackers fled, expressed shock and disappointment over what he termed “a shameful display of intolerance and a dangerous signal for democracy.”
