https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPsv1FcCUGs Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore stirred fresh public conversation in Abuja after appearing at a church gathering linked to the growing campaign to preserve the public use of Jabi Lake Park. At the event hosted by Pastor Sarah Omakwu, Sowore described himself as “born again” and “a prayer warrior,” a remark that quickly drew attention across social and political circles. His appearance came amid rising debate over the future of Jabi Lake, where concerns have grown over redevelopment plans and public access to one of Abuja’s best-known recreational spaces. Religious leaders, civic groups and residents have increasingly voiced support for preserving the park as a public asset. Speaking during the gathering, Sowore framed his presence as part of a broader civic cause rather than partisan politics. He said the issue touched on community values, public ownership and the need to protect spaces that serve ordinary residents. The comments added a new dimension to the debate, especially because Sowore is widely known for activism centered on governance, civil rights and accountability. His declaration of being a prayer warrior introduced a more personal note that resonated strongly online. The controversy around Jabi Lake intensified after Pastor Omakwu publicly appealed to Nyesom Wike to preserve the recreation area for public use. She argued that the space remains important for exercise, social interaction and community life in the capital. In response, Wike maintained that government decisions on the redevelopment would not be driven by emotion, insisting that land administration must follow official policy and urban planning priorities. Sowore’s remarks have now widened the conversation beyond urban planning, drawing attention to the relationship between faith, civic engagement and citizen participation in public policy debates. For many observers, the moment was less about political positioning and more about a symbolic message: that defending public spaces can also become a moral and community-driven cause. https://voicenews.com.ng/i-am-born-again-and-a-prayer-warrior-sowores-church-appearance-sparks-fresh-conversation-in-abuja/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=td1bPA0FzHw Social media activist VeryDarkMan has announced the rescue of a newborn allegedly stolen shortly after birth and sold for ₦4.5 million, following a coordinated police operation spanning multiple states in Nigeria. According to his account, the child’s mother reported the case to him on April 25, 2026. He said he immediately accompanied her to the Special Tactical Squad office in Guzape, Abuja, where the matter was presented to the squad commander, ACP Victor. After an official petition received approval from the Force Intelligence Department, investigators moved quickly to begin tracking the suspects. Operatives later travelled to Imo State, where an initial arrest was made. During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed that the baby had been sold to a lawyer for ₦4.5 million. Police then extended the operation to Lagos State, where the child was reportedly recovered. VeryDarkMan said all parties involved have since been taken to Abuja as authorities prepare for the formal handover of the baby to the biological mother. He described the rescue as the result of swift police coordination and sustained follow-up after the case was first reported. The incident has sparked fresh public concern over child trafficking and hospital-related baby theft, while many Nigerians have called for a full investigation and prosecution of everyone connected to the case. https://voicenews.com.ng/verydarkman-assists-police-in-rescuing-baby-stolen-at-birth-and-sold-for-%e2%82%a64-5m/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=av4CS955bts Nigeria’s incoming Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has pledged to stabilise the national grid within three months of taking office, setting an ambitious target as the country grapples with persistent electricity failures. During his Senate confirmation hearing on May 6, 2026, Tegbe said Nigerians should expect measurable progress within his first 100 days in office. Responding to questions from lawmakers, Tegbe said his immediate priority would be restoring grid stability, tightening operational discipline across the power value chain, and plugging systemic leakages that have weakened the sector for years. He promised to return to the National Assembly with a detailed reform roadmap and clear milestones, stressing that if progress is not visible within three months, it would be difficult to achieve meaningful results later. He also highlighted the financial pressure facing the industry, noting that Nigeria’s power sector is carrying an estimated ₦6 trillion debt burden. According to him, liquidity challenges have made it difficult for generation companies to meet gas supply obligations, contributing to lower output and instability across the electricity chain. Tegbe acknowledged that reform would likely face resistance from entrenched interests that benefit from the sector’s inefficiencies. During the screening, lawmakers cautioned him about powerful vested interests in the electricity market that could push back against attempts to clean up the system. His nomination follows the departure of former Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu. Tegbe, a former senior executive at KPMG and former Director-General of the Nigeria–China Strategic Partnership, takes over at a time when unreliable electricity supply remains one of Nigeria’s most pressing economic challenges. Throughout 2026, generation capacity has frequently remained below 3,000 megawatts, leaving households and businesses heavily dependent on private generators. The coming months are expected to be an early test of whether the new minister can translate bold promises into visible improvements in power supply. https://voicenews.com.ng/i-will-fix-incessant-national-grid-collapse-in-three-months-new-power-minister/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7tezgj0Opw A former minister of the Deeper Life Bible Church, Pastor Andrew Umoru, has officially parted ways with the church and launched his own ministry, following reports of internal disciplinary action. Pastor Umoru, who served under the leadership of Pastor William Kumuyi, was known within the church for his teaching and leadership roles. However, his relationship with the church reportedly became strained after issues that led to disciplinary measures, though specific details have not been publicly disclosed. Sources familiar with the situation suggest that the matter may have involved differences in doctrine, administrative direction, or leadership structure—areas that are typically handled internally within the church’s strict and organized system. In a recent public address marking the inauguration of his new ministry, Pastor Umoru acknowledged the transition and emphasized a message of peace and reconciliation. He stated that he holds no resentment and has chosen to forgive, a stance that has drawn mixed reactions from observers within the Christian community. While some followers have expressed concern over the circumstances surrounding his departure, others have praised his decision to move forward without public confrontation. The development has sparked conversations about leadership, accountability, and conflict resolution within faith-based institutions. It also reflects a broader pattern seen across Christian communities, where disagreements sometimes lead to the formation of new ministries. As Pastor Umoru begins this new chapter, attention now turns to how his ministry will evolve and what impact it may have within Nigeria’s religious landscape. https://voicenews.com.ng/pastor-andrew-umoru-leaves-deeper-life-after-discipline-launches-international-miracle-centre/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T05L8dv-_Bo Tinubu Mocks ADC ‘Street Convention,’ Signals Readiness for 2027 President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has taken a swipe at the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC), dismissing its recent gathering as a “street convention” while declaring his readiness for the 2027 general elections. Speaking on Friday, Tinubu framed the moment as a defining political opportunity, saying he was prepared “to break the shackles of poverty and ignorance” and ensure that democracy in Nigeria is sustained. He contrasted what he described as purposeful governance with what he called “noise-making” and “rascality,” in an apparent reference to the ADC’s activities. The ADC’s convention, which has generated reactions across political circles, was positioned by party supporters as a grassroots mobilization effort. However, the President’s remarks sought to downplay its significance, portraying it instead as lacking structure and seriousness. In a series of pointed comments, Tinubu also defended his administration’s record, highlighting infrastructure development, social investments, and economic reforms. “If they don’t want to see the hope in the roads we have built, in the children we have raised, or in the economy we are growing, we will give them eyeglasses,” he said, underscoring what he described as tangible progress under his leadership. The President further stirred debate with a reflective remark on leadership continuity, stating, “I took over leadership from myself; late Buhari is me, he was my partner,” referencing his political alliance with former President Muhammadu Buhari. ADC figures have yet to issue a formal response to the President’s characterization of their convention. Political analysts say the exchange signals an early intensification of rhetoric ahead of the 2027 elections, with both the ruling party and opposition groups beginning to shape public narratives. As political activities gradually build momentum, observers note that such exchanges may define the tone of the pre-election period, with competing visions for Nigeria’s future increasingly taking center stage. https://voicenews.com.ng/tinubu-mocks-adc-street-convention-signals-readiness-for-2027/

Atiku further characterised the issue as systemic, suggesting that Nigeria has repeatedly experienced leadership gaps at both state and federal levels due to insufficient experience among those in power. SamGift0817: |
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NlTVO2hbLr4 Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has described some young Nigerian governors as inexperienced, blaming what he called poor performance in several states on a lack of leadership exposure and weak guidance from the federal level. Speaking during an interview on Arise News on Wednesday night, Atiku said a number of states led by younger politicians are “failing woefully,” arguing that leadership at that level requires more experience than many currently possess. According to him, the situation is compounded by the absence of strong and experienced leadership at the national level, which he believes should provide direction and mentorship to state governors. “There is a clear and stark difference,” Atiku said, noting that younger leaders often struggle without the benefit of guidance from a capable president. The former vice president also drew comparisons with past administrations, citing the tenure of Goodluck Jonathan. While describing Jonathan as a “decent” leader, Atiku argued that his inexperience contributed to challenges faced during his presidency, particularly in managing national issues. Atiku further characterised the issue as systemic, suggesting that Nigeria has repeatedly experienced leadership gaps at both state and federal levels due to insufficient experience among those in power. He added that expectations for young leaders have not been fully met, emphasising the need for mentorship and political tutelage from more experienced figures. The comments come amid ongoing debates about the role of youth in governance, especially in a country where a significant portion of the population is under 30. While some analysts argue that younger leaders bring innovation and energy, others maintain that governance requires years of political and administrative experience. Atiku, a long-standing figure in Nigeria’s political landscape since the return to democratic rule in 1999, has remained an influential voice in discussions on leadership and governance, having contested the presidency multiple times. His remarks are expected to further fuel conversations around the balance between youth representation and experience in Nigeria’s evolving political space. https://voicenews.com.ng/atiku-criticises-young-governors-links-leadership-failures-to-inexperience/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yLe50mf74Q Presidential aspirant of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peter Obi, has said no other contender can match his plans for transforming Northern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections. Obi made the assertion on Monday during an interview on Arise Television Prime Time, where he responded to concerns about his ability to secure widespread support in the North without the backing of influential political figures such as Rabiu Kwankwaso and Nasir El-Rufai. While acknowledging the importance of collaboration, the former Anambra State governor maintained that his development blueprint for the region remains unmatched. “I work with them so that they can do that, but I can tell you, nobody can do what I intend to do in the north,” he said. Obi identified agriculture as a central pillar of his strategy, describing Northern Nigeria’s vast arable land as a largely untapped resource capable of driving economic growth. He argued that with the right investment, the country could generate more revenue from agriculture than it currently earns from oil. “I will change the north; our greatest asset is in the north. The vast uncultivated land is our future. We can make more money from agriculture than we make from oil, and that we have to start doing immediately,” he stated. The presidential hopeful also linked the region’s security challenges to poverty and underdevelopment, stressing that targeted investments in agriculture, education, and healthcare would help address the root causes of instability. “If we want to secure the north today, we need to start investing in those critical areas—starting pulling people out of poverty, investing in education, investing in health—and that we can do,” he added. Obi’s comments come amid ongoing leadership challenges within the ADC, as opposition figures continue efforts to consolidate support across key regions, particularly Northern Nigeria, which remains a crucial voting bloc in national elections.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jh8frhm8QOs A coalition of prominent Nigerian political figures on Wednesday staged a protest in Abuja, demanding reforms in the country’s electoral system and accusing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of bias. The demonstration, tagged “Occupy INEC” and “Save Our Democracy,” was spearheaded by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, alongside Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi. Also present were the National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), David Mark, former Osun State governor Rauf Aregbesola, former Sokoto State governor Aminu Tambuwal, and former senator Dino Melaye, among other party leaders and supporters. Trigger for the Protest The protest follows INEC’s decision to withdraw recognition from the ADC leadership after a Court of Appeal ruling, a move the demonstrators described as politically motivated. Organisers said the action was aimed at drawing attention to what they termed increasing interference in the electoral process and the need to safeguard Nigeria’s democratic institutions. Atiku Abubakar, who had earlier announced the protest, said it was a peaceful demonstration driven by a commitment to protect democracy and prevent any slide toward authoritarian rule. Voices from the Streets At the protest venue, demonstrators chanted “Ojoro”, a slang expression suggesting electoral malpractice, while holding placards bearing inscriptions such as “Tinubu, why are you afraid?”, “Let democracy breathe,” and “Judges must give justice.” Participants also sang “Arise, O Compatriots,” Nigeria’s former national anthem, in what appeared to be a symbolic expression of national unity and civic responsibility. Amaechi Urges Citizens to Act Addressing the crowd, Rotimi Amaechi called on Nigerians to take an active role in defending the country’s democracy. He warned against political manipulation and emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of the electoral process. According to Amaechi, the protest reflects a broader commitment among political leaders to demand credible, free, and transparent elections, adding that safeguarding democracy is a responsibility that extends beyond politicians to all citizens. Rising Political Undercurrents The joint appearance of Atiku, Obi, Kwankwaso, and other influential figures—many of whom were rivals in the 2023 presidential election—has fueled speculation about possible political realignments ahead of 2027. Analysts say the protest signals growing concern among opposition leaders over electoral credibility and could mark the early stages of coalition-building. Call for Electoral Integrity The protesters urged INEC to remain independent and uphold its constitutional responsibility to conduct free and fair elections. They warned that any perceived bias could erode public trust and weaken Nigeria’s democratic framework. The protest underscores increasing political tension as the country gradually shifts focus toward the 2027 general elections, with stakeholders calling for transparency, accountability, and stronger democratic institutions. https://voicenews.com.ng/atiku-obi-kwankwaso-amaechi-lead-occupy-inec-protest-in-abuja/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mINPOH6gQLU Ralphs Okey Nwosu, former National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has revealed that officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) played an active role in the processes that led to the emergence of the party’s current leadership, including David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola. Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Nwosu expressed surprise at what he described as recent actions by the electoral body, noting that his experience with INEC over nearly two decades had been markedly different. “I have worked within party processes, party leadership, and INEC for almost twenty years, and INEC has never done something this scandalous,” he said. Nwosu emphasized that INEC officials were not only present but fully engaged throughout the procedures that produced the new leadership of the party. “All the processes that brought about David Mark, Aregbesola, and the new leadership — INEC was there. INEC members were there; they witnessed all the processes,” he stated. He further explained that the commission went beyond mere observation, offering advisory support to ensure compliance with electoral guidelines. “They were part of it and they were helpful also because, before we did anything, we went to them. We told them, ‘this is what we want to do,’ and they would advise because they wanted all the parties to succeed,” Nwosu added. His remarks come amid ongoing debates surrounding internal party leadership disputes and the role of INEC in overseeing political party processes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8dnpvRNDi8 Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has strongly rejected allegations by Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, that he is working as an agent of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to destabilise the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Wike made the remarks on Wednesday while speaking with journalists during an inspection of ongoing infrastructure projects in the Jahi and Kuje districts of Abuja. Describing the accusation as “embarrassing and baseless,” Wike said the claim reflects inconsistency on the part of the Bauchi governor. According to him, such allegations are not new, noting that many individuals who previously accused him of disloyalty to the PDP have since defected to the APC. “These accusations of me being planted are not new. Those who made them before—where are they today? They are now in APC,” Wike said. He questioned the credibility of the claims, arguing that he has remained in the PDP despite openly supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu since the 2023 elections. “I have said clearly that I will not leave the PDP. At the same time, I will continue to support the President. That has always been my position,” he added. Wike also accused Bala Mohammed of political inconsistency, alleging that the governor had previously sought his support to influence the emergence of the PDP National Secretary—an appeal he said he rejected. The FCT Minister further claimed that during the 2022–2023 election period, Mohammed privately approached him in Port Harcourt to propose support for Tinubu, despite later aligning with former PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar. “The same person who came to meet me to support Tinubu later moved to Atiku. This is the kind of inconsistency Nigerians are watching,” Wike said. He criticised Mohammed’s recent political stance, describing him as unstable and lacking in clear direction. Wike also dismissed the governor’s demand for the position of PDP National Secretary for his faction, arguing that such a request was unrealistic given his current political standing. “You cannot negotiate from a position of weakness and demand such a key position. That is not how it works,” he stated. Despite ongoing tensions within the party, Wike maintained that the PDP remains strong, pointing to the successful conduct of its recent national convention as evidence of its resilience. Reaffirming his loyalty, he insisted he has no intention of leaving the party, even as he continues to back the current administration. Meanwhile, Bala Mohammed had earlier accused Wike of political persecution during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily. He alleged that the FCT Minister was behind legal actions initiated against him, including petitions to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Mohammed also criticised President Tinubu’s administration, describing Wike as a negative influence and accusing him of working against the PDP from within. “You cannot be in two places at the same time,” Mohammed said, questioning Wike’s dual alignment with the PDP and the APC-led federal government. The exchange highlights deepening divisions within the PDP as key figures continue to trade accusations over loyalty and the party’s future direction. https://voicenews.com.ng/wike-denies-apc-link-fires-back-at-bala-mohammed-over-pdp-crisis/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNon5R3tzO0 Tension gripped parts of Benin City on Tuesday as aggrieved youths staged a protest along the busy Benin-Lagos Expressway, barricading a section of the road near the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Ugbowo Campus. The demonstrators, mostly young people, blocked vehicular movement for hours, causing a major traffic gridlock and leaving commuters stranded on one of Nigeria’s key transport corridors. Carrying placards with inscriptions demanding improved living conditions, the protesters expressed frustration over what they described as worsening economic hardship and declining welfare. Some of the messages seen on their signs called for access to basic amenities and urgent government intervention to ease the burden on citizens. Eyewitnesses said the protest began in the early hours of the day, with participants using objects to obstruct the road, forcing motorists to seek alternative routes. “Things are getting too hard. Food is expensive, transport is unbearable, and there are no jobs,” one protester said. “We are only asking for a better life.” The Benin-Lagos Expressway is a vital link between the South-West and South-South regions, and its disruption significantly affected commercial activities and movement of goods and services. Traders, travelers, and transport operators were among those worst hit, as the blockade brought economic activity in the area to a temporary halt. The protest reflects growing discontent among Nigerians grappling with rising inflation, increased fuel prices, and the overall cost of living, which has continued to put pressure on households across the country. As of the time of filing this report, security operatives were reportedly monitoring the situation, while calls for calm and dialogue intensified among community leaders. Observers say the incident underscores the urgent need for responsive economic policies and engagement with citizens to address mounting frustrations. It remains unclear whether the protest will spread or trigger similar actions in other parts of the country. https://voicenews.com.ng/benin-protest-youths-condemn-worsening-economic-hardship/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-3YI93ELQM Former Bayelsa State Governor and Senator representing Bayelsa West, Seriake Dickson, has called on Nigerians to vote out the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections, citing what he described as the party’s failure to improve the country’s condition. Dickson made the remarks on Tuesday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he criticised the APC-led federal government over its handling of key national issues, including the economy, insecurity, and corruption. According to the lawmaker, the APC came into power in 2015 without a clear developmental agenda, arguing that its primary objective at the time was to unseat the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former President Goodluck Jonathan. “They gathered together for the sake of removing the PDP and President Jonathan, and look at where we are,” Dickson said. “No one asked what the plan was after winning power. They simply said ‘change,’ but change can go both ways — from bad to worse.” He maintained that despite criticisms of the PDP before 2015, the current situation in Nigeria reflects a deterioration across multiple sectors. “If you say PDP was bad — whether in terms of corruption or insecurity — what do we have now? People are talking about figures in trillions. On the economy, on security, on fighting corruption, on deepening democracy — the APC has not delivered,” he added. Dickson also accused the ruling party of failing to respect Nigeria’s diversity, stressing that inclusive governance remains critical to national unity and development. The APC rose to power in 2015 on a platform anchored on three key promises: tackling corruption, reviving the economy, and addressing insecurity. However, critics have increasingly questioned the party’s performance over the years, arguing that many of these challenges persist or have worsened. While the APC has defended its record, pointing to reforms and interventions across sectors, opposition figures like Dickson insist that the country requires a new direction. With political activities gradually building ahead of the 2027 general elections, Dickson’s comments add to the growing debate over governance, accountability, and the future of Nigeria’s democracy. https://voicenews.com.ng/apc-must-go-in-2027-senator-dickson-blames-party-for-nigerias-worsening-crisis/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G11XDH0x5Tk King Charles III and Queen Camilla, alongside Prince William and Princess Kate, warmly received Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu during the official state visit to the United Kingdom. The formal welcome, which included handshakes and exchanges of pleasantries, marked the beginning of what is expected to be a high-profile diplomatic engagement. The state visit comes at a time when both nations are seeking to strengthen bilateral relations, with discussions set to focus on trade, investment, security cooperation, and international collaboration. Analysts say the presence of both the monarch and senior members of the royal family underscores the significance the UK places on its partnership with Nigeria. President Tinubu, who was accompanied by a Nigerian delegation, is expected to hold meetings with UK business leaders and government officials aimed at boosting foreign investment and opening new opportunities for Nigerian businesses abroad. Observers highlight that the visit offers a platform to showcase Nigeria’s economic potential, reinforce diplomatic ties, and enhance the country’s international profile. The Tinubus are scheduled to participate in various engagements over the coming days, with the outcomes of the meetings expected to shape the trajectory of Nigeria-UK relations in the near future.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxyKvZowRP8 Ahmadu Fintiri, governor of Adamawa State, has said that no northern politician should contest the presidency in 2027, insisting that power should remain in the south in the interest of fairness and national unity. Fintiri made the remarks on Tuesday during an appearance on Sunrise Daily, a programme on Channels Television. While acknowledging that every Nigerian has a constitutional right to seek elective office, the governor argued that the unwritten zoning arrangement between the north and south should be respected to preserve stability. “It is still the turn of the south. A northerner has no business at the moment to vie for the office of the president,” Fintiri said. He urged Nigerians to support Bola Tinubu in completing what he described as a full eight-year tenure. “After all, he has done so much. He initiated good policies that are working, showing us light at the end of the tunnel,” he added. Fintiri’s comments come amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general election. The governor, who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in February, said his decision was based on political conviction rather than personal disagreements. Addressing speculation about a fallout with former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, Fintiri dismissed claims of strained relations. “Nothing has gone bad but everybody has taken their political ways. I am today in APC, they are in another party,” he said. Abubakar, who was the PDP’s presidential candidate in 2023, resigned from the party in July 2025 and formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in November 2025. He has declared his intention to seek the ADC’s presidential ticket for the 2027 election. A native of Adamawa State, Abubakar has contested Nigeria’s presidency six times and has appeared on the ballot as a presidential candidate in 2007, 2019 and 2023. Fintiri’s position is likely to stir debate within northern political circles as the country begins early maneuvering ahead of the next electoral cycle, particularly over the issue of zoning and power rotation between the regions. https://voicenews.com.ng/fintiri-north-should-wait-until-2031-to-reclaim-presidency/

Hmmmm“What it means is that Senator Godswill Akpabio has become an enemy of democracy,” Okonkwo said. “By insisting on provisions the Supreme Court has clearly warned against, he is sustaining a vicious cycle of election rigging, manipulation and falsification.” SamGift0817: |
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5Uzq_IXV5U A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, has accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of undermining Nigeria’s democratic process amid the controversy surrounding the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, calling for his resignation or removal from office. Okonkwo made the allegation while reacting to the Senate’s handling of the proposed amendments, arguing that Akpabio’s role in retaining disputed clauses in the bill runs contrary to Supreme Court pronouncements and erodes public trust in the electoral system. “What it means is that Senator Godswill Akpabio has become an enemy of democracy,” Okonkwo said. “By insisting on provisions the Supreme Court has clearly warned against, he is sustaining a vicious cycle of election rigging, manipulation and falsification.” He maintained that the Senate President should step aside if he continues on the same path. “That man is an enemy of democracy and should be removed if he doesn’t resign,” he added. The Electoral Act Amendment Bill passed its third reading in the Senate last week. One of its major provisions, Clause 60(30), addresses the electronic transmission of election results. Although the Senate retained the provision for electronic transmission as contained in the 2022 Electoral Act, it rejected proposals for real-time transmission of results and a 10-year ban on vote-buying. Instead, lawmakers opted to maintain existing penalties, including fines and jail terms, for electoral offences. The Senate’s decision has continued to draw criticism from political stakeholders and civil society organisations, many of whom insist that stronger safeguards are necessary to guarantee transparent, credible and trustworthy elections in Nigeria.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcVHUjkMckA A new investigation by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) has detailed how a Nigerian crime syndicate, allegedly led by socialite Nzube Ikeji, defrauded a Romanian businesswoman of more than $2.5 million through an elaborate online romance and advance-fee scam. According to the investigation, Mr Ikeji posed as a member of Dubai’s royal family, using the name Sheikh Hamdan Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, while his associate, Martins Abhulimhen, impersonated a financial manager under the alias Matthew Cros. OCCRP reported that the scheme began when Mr Ikeji contacted the victim, identified only as Laura, via LinkedIn. He reportedly expressed interest in supporting humanitarian initiatives in Romania and sought her advice on organisations deserving of financial backing. What started as a professional exchange gradually developed into a personal relationship. Over time, the interaction allegedly evolved into an online romantic relationship, creating the opening for a romance scam. Mr Ikeji reportedly proposed marriage and persuaded Laura to pay for costs linked to their engagement. He later asked her to travel to London to meet his supposed financial manager to discuss opening a bank account and arranging access to funds. British police later identified “Matthew Cros” as an alias used by Mr Abhulimhen. The investigation found that Laura was provided with login details for an online account that appeared to show a balance of about £202 million in her name. Unaware that the account was fake and digitally manipulated, she paid an initial £7,000 to enable withdrawals. Each attempt to access the funds, however, was met with new demands for fees. According to OCCRP, this pattern continued over an extended period, drawing the victim deeper into the scheme. In total, she reportedly transferred around $2.5 million, believing the funds were genuine. The operation reportedly began to unravel after disputes emerged among the alleged conspirators over how to share the proceeds. OCCRP said a member of the syndicate eventually contacted Laura and disclosed details of the scam. Mr Abhulimhen later confirmed the information to her. “He defrauded you of more than 3 million euros,” the victim was reportedly told. The investigation also claimed that Mr Ikeji and Mr Abhulimhen have social links to several prominent Nigerians. OCCRP reported that they have been photographed with high-profile figures, including senior government officials and well-known business personalities. OCCRP traced Mr Ikeji to a residence in Abuja and identified his wife as Confidence Ikeji. When presented with the findings, Mr Ikeji declined to comment directly, asking that questions be directed to his legal representatives. “I would prefer this question you are asking me now, you consult me in the office, or you meet me or meet my legal team,” he said. As of the time of the report, no official charges had been announced, and the allegations remain the subject of ongoing investigations... https://voicenews.com.ng/investigation-reveals-how-nigerian-syndicate-allegedly-scammed-romanian-woman-of-2-5m/
